What draws us beyond a writer's books and into their life? Why do some authors inspire us to seek out letters, journals, interviews, and biographies while others remain known to us only through their work? In this episode, Trevor and Paul are joined by Dr. James Bailey, author of Like a Cat Loves a Bird, a new book exploring the life and work of Muriel Spark. Rather than focusing on biography as a genre, the conversation wanders through a variety of questions about writers and readers: what prompts our curiosity about authors, what we hope to discover when we learn more about their lives, whether biographical knowledge enriches or complicates our reading, and which writers have inspired us to look beyond the page.Along the way, James discusses his fascination with Muriel Spark, the origins of Like a Cat Loves a Bird, and what it means to spend time in the company of a writer's work and life.2026 Novella Book ClubWe have announced the four novellas we will be reading for The Mookse and Gripes Novella Book Club in 2026!* January: Daisy Miller, by Henry James* April: An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter, by César Aira* July: The Hour of the Star, by Clarice Lispector* September: Prelude, by Katherine MansfieldDiscussions will be hosted at The Mookse and the Gripes Discord (see below!).We've got some fantastic author-focused episodes lined up for the foreseeable future, and we want to give you plenty of time to dive in if you'd like to read along with us. In Dumb Ass News, Chaz and AJ covered one of the most Florida stories of all time. A woman in her 60's called 9-1-1, after the bar she was in refused to give her jello shots. (0:00) Mike B. from the "Mike, Mike and Oscar Podcast" was on the phone with Chaz and AJ, to handle the top movies about aliens for "On the Board." (3:46) Guy Gripes! (18:18) A strange comment was made at a 50th birthday party over the weekend, and Chaz has not been able to understand it. He shared the comment, and asked the Tribe to call in their stories of the strangest things they've heard in conversation. (32:48) Chaz and AJ took a live caller at the very end of the show, and it turned out to be "Bite-sized Bono," who wanted to explain the comment that started a whole conversation earlier in the show. For 30 glorious minutes each week, Chaz and AJ let men call in with no interference or interruption from women. The callers can safely complain about the issue that's bothering them, without any women trying to correct them. Inevitably, every week, a woman calls in to ruin the fun.
For the second installment in our series on the three pieces of a book, we turn from beginnings to that more difficult territory: the middle. What happens in the middle of a book? Is it simply the space connecting a strong opening to a satisfying ending? In this episode we explore the experience of living inside a book: development, repetition, immersion, wandering, pressure, rhythm. This feels like the space where the book does its work. We discuss the middles of sprawling novels as well short stories, asking what middles do and why thinking about this has helped us become less reactive and more attentive readers.2026 Novella Book ClubWe have announced the four novellas we will be reading for The Mookse and Gripes Novella Book Club in 2026!* January: Daisy Miller, by Henry James* April: An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter, by César Aira* July: The Hour of the Star, by Clarice Lispector* September: Prelude, by Katherine MansfieldDiscussions will be hosted at The Mookse and the Gripes Discord (see below!).We've got some fantastic author-focused episodes lined up for the foreseeable future, and we want to give you plenty of time to dive in if you'd like to read along with us. Kevin and Chef Brad are back in the studio, and this time they're joined by the king of the Zone 1 Revolution himself, Austin Whittington, fresh off a grueling, wind-blasted win at the Spinistry Red River Riot.In this episode, the crew dives deep into the current state of grassroots gravel racing versus the increasingly commercialized “Instagramification” of the industry. They discuss how event formats are shifting, why cloverleaf routes might be the ultimate test of mental toughness, and how to bridge the gap for hyper-fit indoor riders who need to build real-world bike handling skills. The guys also unpack the latest bicycle industry shakeups, from the cooling of the post-COVID used bike market to the unfortunate bankruptcy news surrounding Lynskey. On the gear front, expect a heavy dose of tech talk: the frustrating state of satellite trackers and Garmin's subscription models, the death of micro-USB, power meter accuracy, and why you might want to rethink running lightweight pedals if you actually want to cross the finish line.Episode Highlights & Keywords:Race Recap: Surviving 40mph Texas gusts and tire size debates (45s vs. 2.1s) at the Red River Riot.Industry News: The Lynskey Chapter 11 filing, the new Moots Scrambler, and the shifting dynamics of the secondary bike market.Event Design: Why grassroots events are adapting, and the logistical brilliance behind the cloverleaf race route.Tech & Gear: Navigating the confusing world of Garmin electronics, inReach satellite trackers, Assioma vs. Garmin power pedals, and the eternal Crank Brothers vs. Shimano SPD reliability debate.Culture: The changing rules at major events like Leadville and Rule of Three, and building up beginners in the gravel community.Grab your coffee (burnt or otherwise) and tune in!Tags:Gravel cycling, bikepacking, Spinistry, Red River Riot, gravel racing, cycling tech, Garmin Edge, bike tracking, Lynskey titanium, power meters, bike handling, grassroots cycling, cycling industry news, Chef Brad Green.

In this episode, we take a look at the books we have on our nightstands and what they say about us! From the current reads, the aspirational tomes, the comfort books, the neglected books that somehow never leave the stack, and the ever-growing piles of good intentions, what makes a book a “nightstand book” instead of a shelf book? What do our bedside stacks reveal about our habits, ambitions, moods. And how often do our actual reading lives diverge from the readers we imagine ourselves to be?Along the way, we talk about reading rituals, unfinished books, literary guilt, late-night attention spans, and the strange intimacy of the books we keep closest at hand.2026 Novella Book ClubWe have announced the four novellas we will be reading for The Mookse and Gripes Novella Book Club in 2026!* January: Daisy Miller, by Henry James* April: An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter, by César Aira* July: The Hour of the Star, by Clarice Lispector* September: Prelude, by Katherine MansfieldDiscussions will be hosted at The Mookse and the Gripes Discord (see below!).We've got some fantastic author-focused episodes lined up for the foreseeable future, and we want to give you plenty of time to dive in if you'd like to read along with us. Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber cover a loaded New York sports hour, led by the Knicks sweeping Philadelphia and the growing belief that their postseason run is turning into something much bigger. With OG Anunoby's status still uncertain, the guys debate how much comfort Knicks fans should take from the bench stepping up and the offense finding a new rhythm. The conversation expands to the Giants opening against the Cowboys, possible Jets Week 1 scenarios, Philly fans taking heat after Knicks fans invaded their building, Giannis trade rumors, stationwide Knicks prediction accountability, Juan Soto's struggles with the Mets, and whether Yankees fans should feel confident against a struggling Orioles team.
Chaz and AJ opened the phone lines (to men only) for the Tribe to call in and make complaints in a safe space about their wives.

Both the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial debates hosted by the Atlanta Press Club on Georgia Public Broadcasting aired Monday evening, and aside from the notable difference between the two hours - substantive policy conversations vs "who can out-Trump the other" - some other notable moments were worth zeroing in on.Former state Senator Jason Esteves took the first hard swipe at the presumptive frontrunner, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, over the death of Secoriea Turner during her term. He and Senator Derrick Jackson took aim at former GOP lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan for his role in the state of the state currently, and Mike Thurmond presented a novel approach to tax relief: reducing and/or eliminating the state's income tax - a regressive tax. On the right, it was more "Jones v. Jackson" sniping, often with surrogate assistance from attorney general Chris Carr and even secretary of state Brad Raffensperger weighing in on both. The bombshell of the night came as the billionaire Rick Jackson found himself unable to refute their being undocumented people hired on his behalf, which Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones pounced on - unable to resist using the slur "illegals," of course. With me to discuss it all is Atlanta-based political consultant Andrew Heaton.
Tobin is still not over the Dolphins not picking Rueben Bain; but everyone seems to be liking the Proctor pick more and more. Pat Riley had his end of season press conference; and many were not happy with some of the things he had to say. Dave Mack from the PGA joins the show to share all things pertaining to the PGA Cadillac Tournament coming back to Doral! Tobin couldn't be happier that the Dolphins drafted a Brit and of course he must have some fun with his accent.

This week, the boys teleport back to 1986, when Jeff Goldblum was awkward yet ripped and writing was weird, especially for women. Only our second David Cronenberg after “Crimes of the Future”, we dive into “The Fly”: the tropey writing, the B-movie plot outline done at an A-list scale with top-notch hair and makeup, and why we all walked away with different ratings for the movie. This week, we're joined by Luis Panini to talk about reading projects. What are they? Why do we take them on? What happens when we do? From reading an author's work in careful chronological order to following looser themes and curiosities, we explore the ways readers give shape to their reading lives. Along the way, we consider the appeal of structure, the pull of serendipity, and the tension between encountering a book on its own terms and seeing it as part of a larger pattern. As always, we're less interested in prescribing a “right” way to read than in exploring the possibilities. Whether you're a devoted project reader or someone who prefers to follow whatever book calls out next, we hope this conversation offers something to enjoy.Find Luis on Instagram here.2026 Novella Book ClubWe have announced the four novellas we will be reading for The Mookse and Gripes Novella Book Club in 2026!* January: Daisy Miller, by Henry James* April: An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter, by César Aira* July: The Hour of the Star, by Clarice Lispector* September: Prelude, by Katherine MansfieldDiscussions will be hosted at The Mookse and the Gripes Discord (see below!).We've got some fantastic author-focused episodes lined up for the foreseeable future, and we want to give you plenty of time to dive in if you'd like to read along with us. The Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour 1 (3.30) It’s Monday so it means Mark Thompson’s in the house! Yesterday, Timmy C took in the college basketball, Duke vs. UConn, and you know what? While it's not for him, this game sure was a doozy. Did you know? Mark Thompson chooses his casinos based on how clean the men’s room is. He may be a betting man, but he doesn’t play when it comes to his tinkling. This one’s for the smarty-pants listeners: Please, for God’s sake, do more TalkBacks. And now one for the dumb-dumbs: Timmy likes your TalkBacks much better, keep it up. A woman was interviewed by KTLA about gas prices and why she was buying gas at that Hollywood gas station — she said because her friend told her it was 26 cents cheaper per gallon. And she came from Corona in Riverside. Which was a 74-mile drive. Her math ain’t mathing. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber dive into a classic New York sports mashup, from the Yankees' strange opening stretch to the growing buzz around St. John's. They debate Cam Littler's pitch count, whether Will Warren starting the home opener is a real problem, and why the Yankees' early off days could leave fans more frustrated than refreshed. The conversation also turns to the team's Netflix opener and the bigger question of how much streaming is changing the way fans follow baseball. The energy only ramps up from there with St. John's optimism hitting another level as the guys revisit the biggest moments of Evan's lifetime as a fan and look ahead to what could be next. They also get into the Knicks' push for playoff positioning, why a win over the Nets mattered more than it looked, and the usual mix of sharp opinions, fan therapy, and New York sports chaos that keeps the conversation moving.

Andy and Brendan are just about ready to head down to Ponte Vedra for a "major" March event, but we've already missed out on one Players tradition! Andy can't believe that the yearly TPC Sawgrass arrival videos did not make it into Sunday's Arnold Palmer Invitational broadcast. NBC couldn't cut away from a duel between Daniel Berger and Akshay Bhatia on the back nine that ended with Akshay's third playoff win on the PGA Tour. The two break down Bhatia's comeback win and standing in the game as one of the premier players under the age of 25. The constant comparisons between Rickie Fowler and Arnold Palmer and some complaints from Justin Thomas regarding the setup at Bay Hill also feature prominently in this Arnold Palmer Invitational recap. The Players DID release their featured groups on Sunday afternoon, leaving a spot for an injured(?) Rory McIlroy and a struggling Justin Thomas to be on non-stop coverage for the first two rounds. Andy's "Event of the Week," the Puerto Rico Open, was "must see TV" with a leaderboard full of young talent including John Daly II, Blades Brown, and winner Ricky Castillo. Patrick Reed notched another DP World Tour top 10, but could not stop the blaze of Dan Bradbury at the Joburg Open. Brendan then shifts the conversation to Jon Rahm's win at LIV Hong Kong, his first individual win since 2024. Neither Brendan nor Andy are moved much by this win for Rahm and point out that maybe playing a LIV schedule is not the best preparation for a major championship, unlike the test presented by Bay Hill this week. Lastly on results, Zach Johnson is one-for-one in his Champs Tour career, taking down the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational! Sorry to all Ben Crane bettors, as he finished outside of the top 30 in his Senior Tour debut. This Gambling Podcast regrets the error. Check back on Tuesday as Andy and Brendan go live(?) to preview the 2026 Players Championship! Thank you to Optum for their support of our Players Championship coverage.
