Shoot us a Text.Episode #1054: We're kicking off Tuesday week with a look at surging used car sales and shrinking supply, BYD's aggressive EV price cuts in China, and a Waffle House partnership that brings hash browns and high-speed charging together in the South.Show Notes with links:Automotive News released its top Used Car retailers list showing that the stabilizing of the 2024 market led to some big gains. However, the current complexities and quickly shrinking market day supply is testing even the best players.Used-only dealers like CarMax, Carvana, and DriveTime saw strong 2024 growth as supply chains normalized, with Carvana up 33% year-over-year.Dealers are creatively sourcing inventory—prioritizing trade-ins and direct-from-customer purchases to avoid costly auctions. The current used vehicle supply stands at just a 43-day market supply, the lowest since 2021, with lower-price vehicles hardest to find.Tariff fears have driven consumers to buy quickly, pushing prices for the top 50 used models to an average of nearly $29,000“There isn't a lot of room for error anymore in the post-COVID used-car world,” said Bill Solko, dealer principal of Automotive Avenues.Meanwhile Cox Automotive's Jonathan Smoke warned, 2025 is going to be a roller coaster for this industry,” BYD just launched a fresh round of EV price cuts in China, triggering a market shake-up that's pummeling stocks and ramping pressure on rivals like Tesla.BYD slashed prices across several models, including a 20% cut on the sub-$10,000 Seagull hatchback now priced at an equivalent of $7,780The Chinese EV market is nearing 50% penetration — five times the U.S. rate — largely due to aggressive pricing strategies.EV maker stocks, including BYD, Li Auto, and Geely, fell sharply after the announcement, signaling investor anxiety.BYD's growing profit cushion from 2019–2024 gives it room to undercut less profitable competitors.“This new price war will put even more pressure on Tesla,” Electrek reported, especially as new players like Xiaomi ramp up.In a match made in Southern heaven, bp pulse and Waffle House are joining forces to bring 400kW ultrafast EV charging to your next roadside breakfast stop.Starting in 2026, Waffle House locations across Georgia, Texas, Florida, and beyond will host six-bay charging stations. The chargers will support both CCS and NACS connectors and deliver up to 200 miles of range in about 15 minutes. The 24/7 diner vibe adds much-needed comfort and reliability to the EV charging experience. This builds on bp pulse's growing U.S. network, which includes partnerships with Hertz and 8,000+ retail locations.“Charging up while fueling up on an All-Star Special will be convenient and fast,” said Waffle House Innovation Director David Repp.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Pete Bigelow, Senior Reporter, Automotive News joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss how Detroit is handing tariffs, the slow adoption of electric vehicles and consumers increasing interest in autonomous vehicles. Detroit's automakers are grappling with a future that is no longer electric, it's autonomous. After racing full steam ahead towards electric vehicles, the momentum has stalled as consumers are opting for hybrids. Even as consumers opt for hybrids, they are increasingly interested in autonomy and the emergence of personally-owned autonomous vehicles. However, the question still remains whether traditional OEMs have the will or the ability to develop in-house and commercialize an autonomous driving system that is reelable and scaleable. If they can not develop it in-house, they will have to license the technology with the risk of becoming a contract manufacturer for the autonomy industry. We're all on a path to somewhere, and then something comes along that brings clarity into our life, and often takes us in an unexpected direction. We ask, “did we manifest that” or did it “just happen?” Lyn St. James believe it's likely a combination of things, but she believes things don't just happen. The more difficult the challenge, the more difficult the climb, and the more important we need to pay attention to the things that influence our choices. It's often upon reflection where we can see and learn how those influences impacted our lives. And depending on what decade we're living in, and what decade of our life we're reflecting on those choices, it can help shape our lives and the lives of those around us. An important piece of advice - pay attention to your influences and how they impact your decisions. And always think about the bigger picture, because everything we invite to enter our sphere of awareness impacts what we do, and what we do has an impact on others. This presentation is a recap of how my five decades in the motorsports industry has taken me down the path of racing around the world and provided me with incredible opportunities to be someone I would never have dreamed I could be. Legacy automakers have poured billions into electric vehicles but are still trying to catch up. Why? Because breaking free from the systems built for gas-powered cars isn't easy.In this episode, Mike Colias, the Wall Street Journal's deputy bureau chief for autos, joins Jan Griffiths to talk about the messy reality of the EV transition. Drawing from his book Inevitable: Inside the Messy, Unstoppable Transition to Electric Vehicles, they dive into why legacy automakers continue to struggle, what's really slowing things down, and how culture—not just technology—is the real battle. In 2022, Ford executives gathered in a nearly empty warehouse, staring at two cars: a Mustang Mach-E and a Tesla Model 3. It wasn't just a teardown—it was an autopsy. As they examined the differences, it became clear: Tesla was years ahead in design efficiency, cost-cutting, and scale, while Ford's EV was still burdened by old-school engineering. This wasn't just a Ford problem—it was an industry-wide issue. GM had glimpses of an EV future with the Volt, but its rigid structure forced compromises. Meanwhile, Tesla and Chinese automakers moved fast, unburdened by legacy processes and cultures resistant to change. But the real problem isn't just technology—it's culture. The systems that perfected combustion engine manufacturing are now roadblocks to innovation in the EV era, and the old ways of working simply don't translate to EV success. So, what happens next? With China producing high-quality, affordable EVs at an unprecedented pace and global competition intensifying, automakers can't afford to cling to the past. The shift to EVs is inevitable—but will legacy automakers evolve fast enough to stay in the race?Listen now to get the inside story on the biggest transformation in automotive history!Themes discussed in this episode:The messy and expensive reality of the EV transition for legacy automakersWhy the shift to EVs is inevitable, despite industry resistanceWhy traditional car companies struggle to match Tesla's speed and efficiencyHow legacy automakers' old ways of working are slowing down EV progressHow Chinese automakers are producing cheaper, high-quality EVs at scaleThe growing threat of Chinese EVs and what it means for U.S. automakersHow leadership decisions at Ford, GM, and others shape the future of EVsFeatured guest: Mike ColiasWhat he does: Mike is the deputy bureau chief for autos at The Wall Street Journal, covering the auto industry's shift to EVs, self-driving cars, and emerging technologies. Few people know the U.S. car industry more intimately than the Wall Street Journal deputy auto editor Mike Colias. His new book, Inevitable, offers an insiders guide into what he sees as our messy, yet unstoppable transition to electric vehicles. In this wide ranging conversation on all things automotive, Colias addresses Trump's recent tariff impacts on the American car industry, the stark contrast between Chinese (50%) and US (10%) EV adoption rates, and China's dominance in battery supply chains and charging infrastructure. Colias explains how Chinese automakers have leapfrogged traditional manufacturers in EV technology, while European makers are caught between regulatory pressures and relentless Chinese competition. He ends with some thoughts about the future of autonomous vehicles which he sees as far less"inevitable" than EVs.Here are the 5 KEEN ON takeaways from our conversation with Colias: * The stark contrast between EV adoption rates globally - China leads with 50% of new car sales being electric, Europe follows at 20-25%, while the US lags at around 10%. This sharp disparity is largely due to China's strategic government support, infrastructure investment, and incentives.* China's dominance in the EV supply chain is comprehensive - from controlling critical minerals (lithium, cobalt, nickel) to processing capabilities and battery production. This gives Chinese manufacturers a significant competitive advantage that Western automakers are struggling to match. It might even point to the superiority of the Chinese state lead innovation model over the US market driven one. * The role of hybrids as a "bridge technology" - Many consumers, particularly in the US, are choosing hybrids as a stepping stone to full EVs, suggesting the transition might be more gradual than initially predicted by US (but not Japanese) automakers who invested heavily in full electric vehicles.* The environmental impact of EVs is more complex than some activists would have us believe - While EVs produce more carbon emissions during manufacturing than gas vehicles, they ultimately result in 30% less emissions over their lifecycle. However, their environmental benefit depends significantly on the source of electricity used to power them.* Trump's new tariffs (as of 2025) are creating significant disruption in the auto industry, particularly affecting the established North American supply chains -While unions support the tariffs for potential job creation, most auto executives view them as harmful to the industry and likely to increase car prices.Mike Colias is the deputy bureau chief for autos, based in The Wall Street Journal's Detroit bureau. His articles explore the auto industry's massive and messy transition to electric vehicles, self-driving cars and other technologies with the potential to reshape how people get around. He writes and edits stories about Ford, GM and other major car companies navigating change, from EVs and in-car tech to tariffs. Mike is also author of the 2025 book: “Inevitable: Inside the Messy, Unstoppable Transition to Electric Vehicles." He joined WSJ from trade publication Automotive News, where he covered GM. Before that, he wrote about health care at Crain's Chicago Business and worked at The Associated Press in Chicago. Pete Bigelow, Senior Reporter, Automotive News and Sergey Litvinenko, Co-Founder & CEO of Koop joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the insurance challenges surrounding SAE Level 3 vehicles and how the insurance requirements will change with higher levels of automation. In this in-depth discussion, Grayson, Pete and Sergey explore the complex landscape of Level 3 semi-autonomous vehicles and their associated liability challenges. The conversation delves into why major automakers such as GM and Ford have retreated from developing full self-driving systems to instead focus on driver assistance systems. In the long-term, this could prove to be a costly mistake.During the discussion they also spoke about the emerging complexities of insuring robotaxis in Las Vegas and how the “Vegas risk” could impact underwriting. Here's what to watch for as the event unfolds.Early announcements started yesterday, with automakers likely teasing EV concepts and tech advancements.Today will feature the biggest announcements of CES, featuring Samsung, Nvidia and Sony, setting the tone for the week. For the rest of the week, the show floor opens, offering hands-on access to next-gen automotive innovations like software-defined vehicles, AI integration, and autonomous features. As new-vehicle affordability continues to challenge consumers, Q4 2024 set new records for monthly payments and loan amounts.According to Edmunds, nearly 1 in 5 new-car buyers in Q4 2024 committed to $1,000+ monthly payments, an all-time high. The average amount financed for new cars hit $42,113, up from $40,713 in Q3 2024.0% financing offers remain scarce, accounting for only 2.4% of deals, requiring excellent credit to qualify.Average new-car APR dipped to 6.8% in Q4 2024, showing signs of improvement after years of high rates.Meta's experimental AI-generated accounts have sparked controversy for their fabricated identities and profit-driven goals. Some bots, like "Liz" and "Grandpa Brian," went viral for calling out their own creators, prompting Meta to shut down the accounts amid a storm of public criticism.Meta introduced AI-generated personas on Facebook and Instagram with bios, profile pictures, and interactive capabilities to boost user engagement.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text.8 days to Christmas, and we're covering how Biden's plans to add highway charging infrastructure will continue under President Trump. Plus, we look at GM's latest subscription add-on and ask if it will work, and examine a company that claims it has stopped hiring because AI can do all the work.Show Notes with links:The Biden administration's plan to blanket U.S. highways with federally funded EV chargers will keep moving forward – no matter who sits in the Oval Office come next year. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program has already allocated about half its funding to states, with the rest preapproved. So far, 11 states have opened 30 federally backed sites with more than 130 ports, aimed at creating chargers every 50 miles along major highways.States manage their own programs, though 10 states have yet to submit project proposals, potentially slowing progress in certain regions.Once the initial 50-mile network is complete, funds can go toward chargers in cities, suburbs, and rural areas, with faster, high-powered stations expected to follow.Atlas Public Policy's Nick Nigro says Congress doesn't need to act: “Funding is already going out, and construction is underway.”Loren McDonald, chief analyst of Paren said it's too late to stop the momentum. “It would take almost an act of God for Trump or Congress to overturn it.”General Motors is facing a critical moment as introductory Super Cruise subscriptions start to expire, testing its long-term strategy to build a robust revenue stream from subscriptions.Super Cruise is a Level 2 autonomy system and GM aims to generate $25 billion annually from subscriptions and services by 2030.Our friend Jamie Butters wrote an op-ed about this for Automotive News and commented on the price point: ““At $10 a month, I'd consider it a no-brainer — even though I'm kind of a cheapskate and resistant to subscriptions. At $50 a month — as some Google searches indicate — it's an easy no. The price listed on Cadillac.com is temptingly in between: $25 a month or $250 a year.”Klarna's CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, recently touted AI's role in reducing the company's workforce, but a closer look reveals the buy now, pay later giant hasn't fully swapped humans for machines just yet.Klarna reduced its workforce from 4,500 to 3,500 over the past year, largely due to natural attrition and a hiring freeze.Siemiatkowski claims, “AI can already do all of the jobs that we as humans do,” crediting AI with enabling efficiency gains.Klarna is still hiring, with 50+ open roles globally, primarily for essential positions like engineering and partnerships.Klarna's press lead clarified the CEO's comments,Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
