My Adoption Story

The Simplicity Sessions

Welcome back to The Simplicity Sessions, I'm delighted that you've joined us today. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. This is a special episode today because it is my birthday. I have a unique birth story as I was adopted at birth; I was raised by my wonderful adoptive parents and met my birth parents when my daughter was 10 months old. I wanted to tell you this story because it made me into the woman, mother, and wife that I am today. My birth parents had me when they were 15 (mother) and 16 (father) years old. My mother didn't even know she was pregnant until she was 5 months along because she was having irregular periods due to her young age. My adoptive parents already had a daughter but decided to adopt another child after tragically losing my older brother Christopher at 19 months old after recovering from surgery to repair five holes in his heart. Soon after I was born and my adoptive parents took me into their care, they found out they were pregnant with my younger brother, Matthew (younger by 8 months). Life as a child within my adoptive parents' family was wonderful. I always felt loved and supported by my parents who told me I was adopted at a young age. I took pride in my adoptive status. I gave an award-winning speech in grade three on my adoptive story. My parents gave me the forms to find my birth parents at the age of 17. I was excited; however, I didn't fill out the forms right away because I had the opportunity to finish high school early to move to Japan and work as a model. I went away to school when I got back from Japan. It wasn't until I was married and pregnant with my first child, Emerson, that I decided I wanted to find out more about my birth parents to find out the family health history. After filling out a series of forms and a lot of patience, I finally got the chance to meet and speak to my birth mother. I discovered that my birth parents stayed together, got married, and had three more children: Matt, Spencer, and Emma. A fourth child, my parents' second pregnancy, was lost (another boy), which was similar to my adoptive parents' experience. I was very nervous when I first met my birth parents, but I was fortunate that my adoptive parents prepared a number of pictures when I was a baby to show my birth parents. I discovered that my birth siblings did not know about me. My birth parents never told them about me because my birth was a secret due to the nature of the times and how people would react to a young teenage pregnancy. It took me a long time to figure out how I felt about gaining an entire family that I did not know well. I would spend a lot of time with my birth parents and my birth siblings, but it was difficult to accept that my daughter would call them grandparents. Over time, I was able to get over the emotionally draining times and grew a bond with my birth family. I am forever grateful that I have this big extended family from which my husband, kids, and I interact with on a regular basis. Meeting my birth family and being raised by my adoptive family with such love and support throughout my life has shaped me into the person I am today, and for that I am eternally grateful. If you have a question for me and my team, send it over to hello@jennpike.com or via Instagram at @jennpike and I'll do my best to share helpful insights, thoughts and advice. I have been under stress lately with my life changes, so I have been using ashwagandha to decrease stress. Other benefits include increased strength, endurance, and sex drive. Eaton Hemp is my favourite CBD and Hemp based company. Use code JENNPIKE15 at check out and save 15% off your order for every order after that. I use soothe oil on my skin, which has calendula, vitamin E, sage, and galbanum, which have anti-inflammatory properties. I put the oil along my hairline.   Quotes - “...until she was sitting in class one day and actually noticed that she had lactated through her shirt through her bra and her shirt.” “He was born with five holes in his heart and he lived until he was 18 months old with that heart, then underwent heart surgery. He survived the surgery, but then didn't make it through the recovery. And so my mom and dad lost him at 19 months old. And my sister lost him.” “I have a baby coming in September and I have a baby coming in October. Would you like one of these babies? This is the conversation that happened back in 1979. “I, in fact, was the final private adoption done in Ontario before CAS came in and took over.” “...here's what I want you to know throughout this whole journey of me sharing this. There has never been a moment in my life where I have not felt loved from inception.” “I am so grateful to my mom and dad for being the home that my soul and my spirit needed in order to become the young girl, the mother, and the woman that I am today, because they're responsible” “...now I think I'm ready to fill out the forms because I want to know more about my health history. I want to know more about things that I need to understand in my own body and if I'm susceptible to anything. Now that we're starting to have children, I want to know it for them.” “...she says, hi, can I speak with Jennifer? And I said, yep and start crying. She says ‘hi, my name is Leslie. I am your birth mom'” “But at the same time, it was so emotionally draining and exhausting. Now we are at these points in our life where we have a really great relationship.” “I believe that I have had such a healthy relationship with my whole adoption story and with all of these new things happening and meeting my whole birth family, because my mom and dad were honest with me from day one.” “And that we may not arrive here in the family that we are going to be raised by, but we can most definitely end up in a family that we are meant to be loved and raised by. And that is my story”   Additional Information About Jenn - Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. I had so many “aha” moments during this conversation. You could say that Stephanie Dodier helps women break away from diet culture. But that doesn’t do her work justice. She promotes counterculture principles that permanently change how women relate to their bodies, including how to de-link self-love from body love and how to disrupt harmful generational knowledge transfer. She is empowering women to change the world from the inside out. Stephanie is a Clinical Nutritionist who created the Going Beyond the Food Method, a cornerstone of her Conquer and Thrive program. She uses her own experience with food and her body to sustain her investment in sharing how she approaches personal health.   Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation: Why the podcast has a new name Introducing Stephanie Dodier and how she inspires What “being healthy” has come to mean 14:00 Why Stephanie cares so much about the culture associated with being healthy 15:00 Stephanie’s experience accepting and loving her body is ... other people Many sectors profit off of women feeling like they aren’t good enough Stephanie’s journey with food and her body Women who ask for help with weight gain are ostracized by society because they don’t fit the typical need profile About diet culture and societally imposed body ideals for women There is diversity in women’s body size going back millennia- as far as we can trace back How and why the medical industry participates in diet culture Self-love versus body neutrality The effect of living in a patriarchal society on “programming” girls’ relationships with their body Generational norms contribute to the persistence of diet culture Jenn’s early experiences with diet culture How to begin pushing back against diet culture 43:00 intuition 43:20 how to deal with sabotage- how to re-think sabotage Redefining health to be more than just a physical body Linking “optimum health” to social justice Moving away from the idea that everyone is meant to prioritize being perfectly healthy Diet culture affects girls’ behavior as early as elementary school How the pandemic is affecting body relationships We should be teaching in schools how to process emotion, which would affect our relationship with food How Jenn and others feel when processing all of the topics covered in this episode The Conquer and Thrive program and Stephanie’s podcast  Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. I’ve tried these as a mom- I hope they work for you! We love smoothies because they’re quick and easy. I started adding in Sunwarrior’s Beauty Greens Collagen Booster in pina colada flavor. She likes that it tastes healthy, I like that it’s got probiotics and is plant-based with greens in it. I am encouraging my daughter to think about her skin as a whole. Skin Essence is Canadian-founded, organic, non-GMO, not animal-tested- this company is one that we love and have around the house, which is why my daughter’s been giving them a try (and my husband and son too!). You can even talk to the company to get advice on which products may be right to try first. I’ve mentioned before a plant-based iron organic herb tonic that my daughter has been using. It’s been helping her feel a lot better, especially around her periods- it’s common for young girls first getting their period to be anemic. Garden of Life’s mykind Organics liquid iron supplement is junk-free and helps her body uptake and absorb iron. This could help you moms too! And the flavor is fantastic- her favorite is cranberry lime. Another thing that I want to help my daughter with is reducing the problems that can be associated with having her period. Really Neutral Tonics from Saint Francis Herb Farm can help. I most love their menstrual tonic and PMS support, which you don’t have to use together. I hope some of these tips can help all your mamas out there, and if you don’t have a daughter, then I hope some of these tips and tricks can help you.  Create a more simple life with Saint Francis Herb Farm products. The Adversity Advantage

The Adversity Advantage

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2020 52:01

In this episode, my guest and I are going to talk not only about business and entrepreneurship, but also about breaking unhealthy generational patterns and creating massive success. This will make people realize that just because you are born into unhealthy or traumatic family dynamics, it doesn't have to be that moving forward. Once you break the pattern and commit to working on yourself, great things can happen. This includes not only making  a lot of money, but changing a lot of lives along the way.    My guest today is none other than The Jenn Kennedy — an impact-driven business mentor and a coach. She is the founder of Impact to Income Academy and she helps people absolutely crush and scale their business.  Jenn's Back Story:   Jenn was just 5 years old when her parents got divorced. That time, she doesn't even know what “divorce” means. All she knew was everybody is sad. Her mom was depressed, and her dad wasn't around.   She realized as the oldest daughter of their family that it was going to very quickly be her job to just make sure that everyone's happy. She took on the role of her family to be the light and just make sure that no one is sad.   If she was mad or frustrated, it was just buried deeper and deeper because her parents were both very stubborn in their alcoholism tendencies and they told her to never ask for help, because they can do anything by themselves and they just act like everything's okay.   That message and mentality really is what caused Jenn's eating disorder. It's what caused her to try drugs when she was in college. It's what caused her to never think that she was good enough, skinny enough, smart enough, no matter how hard she worked.    It was the reason why she was looking for approval, and looking for her self worth in every single human in her life besides herself.   After she overcame that eating disorder, she realized how many women were struggling with the same things she was struggling with, because she didn't speak about anything. She realized that women were still struggling and were not living in their power, because they were afraid that their physical bodies weren't good enough for that. That's when Jenn started her first business, which was nutrition coaching. And that's the reason why she found the passion in helping women uncover their power and stand in their confidence as a woman in their body. Jenn's secret to effectively deal with all the circumstances that the world is going through right now: Jenn always takes care of herself first. As a leader, she knows that she has to take care of herself first. And that means her energy, mind, body, soul, and everything.   The first thing that she's doing is she's making sure that she is still showing up, most importantly, for herself.   She is educating herself, trying to understand, and learning to lead like an imperfect person. She doesn't know what's right. She doesn't know what's wrong, but she is leading anyway. And so she's just leading, knowing she's going to make mistakes, knowing that she has flaws, but she's showing up anyway, because that's what's near and dear to her heart. In this episode, Jenn will be answering these questions:   How did Jenn manage to leave her teaching career to become a full-time entrepreneur   How well did Jenn handle all the judgements thrown to her by the people around her   How Jenn and her husband made their relationship work better despite all the difficulties they faced while they try to grow individually   What are Jenn's main goal in building her own business Words of wisdom from Jenn:   “The only person who should be in charge of yourself, is yourself.”     “If I can do it, anyone can do it.”   “Every single human is born with empathy.”   “Comparing yourself to others can be really healthy.”   Tune in to this episode to know the reason behind these quotes from Jenn! Why We Love Jenn Jenn Kriske is the founder of Machines for Freedom, a high performance apparel brand for women in the cycling community. She landed on the idea for the company after realizing what basically every woman who has ever taken up cycling eventually realizes - that the bike industry didn't give a shit about women.  Machines for Freedom has created palpable changes in the cycling world, which have led to an industry-wide shift in women's marketing. The company has not only proved to the industry that an entire market exists, but they've innovated and elevated cycling apparel for women in a way no other brand has (though they try), while building a strong and organic community of women who support each other, challenge themselves, and spread good vibes. On the Pod, We Discuss: What led Jenn to create more apparel options for women in the sport and change the view around the sport in terms of what a classic cyclist looks like How traditional clothing can prevent women from getting started in cycling Why the equipment itself can lend itself to body image issues Starting her company and what led her to develop her first kit The history of women in cycling and why clothing is a microcosm of the industry at large The intersection of cycling and body positivity, and how Machines for Freedom was one of the first brands to actively promote it How inclusive marketing has affected the brand and why it’s so important How Jenn landed on the name of the company and the historical context The constructs put on women around femininity and sexuality and the kit Jenn developed to challenge them Her experience running the company over the past years and the biggest hurdles she has faced as an entrepreneur What you need to know if you’re interested in getting into cycling and how to find a community that’s a good fit Her outlook on the future of the industry, body positivity and inclusive retail And much more Helpful Links:  The Machines for Freedom website Follow Machines for Freedom on Instagram and Facebook Video from Specialized: The Issue Is: Cycling’s Body Problem Bicycling.com article about the “fruits” kit For more info and to view full show notes visit wellnesslately.com/podcast

Halfway between being a health coach and a naturopathic doctor, she helps her clients find missing pieces of their “health puzzles” and insists on treating the person as a whole, rather than just attending to their lab results. To do this she uses comprehensive test results and the patient’s health history to reveal the underlying causes of what ails them. In this eye-opening discussion, Jenn traces her own health journey over the years and explains how you can investigate your own health symptoms. In addition, Kelly is opening up applications for her Ascend Mastermind, where she’ll help you bust through your fears, prioritize your health and get after your business goals. If you’re interested and have any questions, drop Kelly a line on social media or sign up for the Ascend mailing list at http://www.kellytravis.net/ascendlist. The Finer Details of This Episode: - Jenn breaks down what she does in her line of work and what distinguishes her from naturopathic doctors. - What personal experiences prompted Jenn to reevaluate her health situation and pursue a diagnostic nutrition practitioner career? - Why we need to avoid running our lives on “autopilot” regardless of how we feel in the moment. - The ways Jenn has noticed her clients have become more empowered in the aftermath of taking ahold of their health. - How Jenn helped one client figure out what was holding them back from taking charge of their health and holding back their quality of life. - Why “grit and determination” are not the keys to achieving your health goals, and how dogged persistence can actually backfire. - Techniques for keeping yourself from falling into a “death spiral” and taking up bad habits you previously shed. - The moment in Jenn’s journey that her self-worth truly began to improve. - A few tools Jenn uses to stay alert to how her body is changing and adapting. - Everyday, seemingly innocuous symptoms that are actually big red flags about your health. - Jenn explains how the testing she uses in her line of work is more comprehensive than the average doctor-prescribed blood test. Quotes: “We shouldn’t be settling for anything less than what we deserve when it comes to our health and well-being.” “Our body will do anything that we ask it to do but that doesn’t mean that we should either.” “Whatever’s going on with you right now is an accumulation of what has happened over your lifetime.” “Test, don’t guess, otherwise you’re just taking a shot in the dark.” “If you don’t feel right in your own body, that is enough alone to explore what is going on with you.” Guest Links: (W)holistic Health Boss - https://wholistichealthboss.com/ (W)holistic Health Boss on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wholistichealthboss/ (W)holistic Health Boss on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/FunctionalDiagnosticNutrition/ Show Links: Oura Ring - https://ouraring.com/ Elite HRV - https://elitehrv.com/ Kelly’s homepage - http://www.kellytravis.net Ascend Mastermind - http://www.kellytravis.net/ascend

Any true fitness professional will tell you that trends appear with little to no outside validation or scientific thought process.  Jenn and her guest Morgan Williams discuss their 2 decades of experience as fitness professionals. They sift through the different areas of exercise application, the trials of being fit , maintaining healthy joints and exploring their competitive nature as female athletes.     The bottom line is, if you have a belief in your ability to improve your body with exercise - you don’t have to rely on diluted and shallow information to guide you along the way. This episode pulls the curtain back on changes throughout their careers and how they continue to strive to be the best for their clients.   What you’ll learn in this episode:  How Jenn and Morgan have changed their approach to helping people with previous injuries get fit and stay fit.  Mistakes they’ve made with our business, clients and within our own exercise. Can you imagine what the women in this world could do if they weren't worried about the number on the scale? - Jennipher Walters on what insight her intuitive dietitian had given her. This week, Rob had an amazing discussion with Podcast Hosts, Personal Coaches at Fit Bottomed Girls, and Creators of the Love Your Body. Love Your Life online course, Jennipher Walters and Kristen Seymour. Both women shared their own wellness journeys, how they went from student to personal trainer, and how Fit Bottomed Girls has evolved since 2008. Both Jenn and Kristen are on a mission to share their You Can't Hate Yourself Healthy approach to both men and women to inspire them to give up their diets and focus on enjoying their lives rather than allowing the number on the scale to determine their happiness. Through Fit Bottomed Girls, Jenn and Kristen are leading voices in combating the negative messages that the media spreads about what it means to be healthy. It is their mission to help people boost their body confidence and self-image through courses, couching, books, podcast interviews, and more. On This Episode: As you listen, Rob, Jenn, and Kristen discuss: How you can create healthy habits by first focusing on what you love such as your favorite exercise and foods before you challenge yourself. Why our poor body image and self-confidence is actually a wake-up call that there is something deeper that needs our attention. Why you can't have the mindset that you must restrict your nutrition while working out hard or training for endurance events. Why some people with tendencies such as Rebels or Upholders might have difficulty with focusing on their self-love and how they can overcome it with a unique approach that works for them. How important it is to do a self-audit of where you are now and where you want to be in the future.   "It's okay to eat the foods you want or need to eat. We tend to moralize food but you're not good for eating a salad nor bad for eating ice cream." - Kristen Seymour About Fit Bottomed Girls It began as a single blog with a tongue-in-cheek play on a Queen song. Today, the Fit Bottomed World, run by Jennipher Walters and Kristen Seymour (who are certified fitness professionals but also just everyday regular women), is an online phenomenon reaching millions of women (and men!) each month. And, of course, the focus is always on the idea that fit bottoms come in all shapes and sizes — and that you’re more than the number on the scale. (And they know because they’ve been there. Read Jenn’s personal story here, and Kristen’s here.) True pioneers of the body-positive movement, Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead began Fit Bottomed Girls in 2008 as friends looking for a fun, fresh and no-diet approach to being healthy. Months after the site launched, it took off — readers were clearly hungry for something other than “how to lose 10 pounds in 10 minutes and get the perfect man.” Infusing their own experiences (both failures and successes) they created a community of “FBGs” — welcoming everyone in, including writer Kristen Seymour, who would later become a business partner. From there, the Fit Bottomed Girls expanded into new verticals and products to serve its growing readership, including Fit Bottomed Mamas, Fit Bottomed Eats, a book, Fit Bottomed Zen, a podcast and the online course Love Your Body. Love Your Life. In 2017, Erin left the company to pursue other interests and focus on her family, while the Fit Bottomed World expanded into more speaking engagements, retreats, and brand consulting. Jenn and Kristen also continue to work with major brands such as Brooks Running, Marshall’s and Pure Protein on campaigns and other influencer projects that are fully aligned with the Fit Bottomed Girls’ mission. In fact, Jenn and Kristen were named as one of The 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness by Greatist in 2016 and 2017, and were listed as one of the best healthy living bloggers of 2018 by Healthline. And the one thing that will never, ever change is the company’s mission to continue to let women (and men!) know that you simply can’t hate yourself healthy. Let Us Coach You On The Podcast! “Communication Diva” is the tongue-in-cheek, sassy title of podcaster and author (and church minister) Jenn Swanson. Jenn doesn’t actually believe anyone can be a diva of communication but does passionately insist that we could all do with a little practice! Through her podcast, public speaking, workshops, individual coaching, ministry, and recently published book, Jenn lives out her personal mission statement: to connect, encourage, and empower others and to help people “know they can.” Aimed at high school and college graduates (and with a gentle nudge toward personal awareness and growth), What They See: How to Stand Out and Shine in Your New Job takes readers beyond the interview and into the three-month probationary period of new employment.  TWEET: I didn’t want to deal with paperwork but wanted to do pastoral care with patients. @jennswanson2 Finding what calls to you: Do you follow what “calls to you”? Jenn shares how she spent 23 years in the hospital business, but then left to follow her dreams. After securing her instructor’s license, she went into teaching medical terminology and found it was something she enjoyed. “There was something about teaching that was calling me,” Jenn says. But she didn’t stop there; she went on to get her ministerial training part-time while working at the hospital—and added another profession to her repertoire. TWEET: Why should I slow down when I love what I’m doing? @jennswanson2 Don’t overload your plate! Do you feel compelled to say YES to everything that comes along? So many people “overload” their plates by never learning to say NO. Jenn says you must be ruthless about your self-care and not let yourself get overloaded. Something may sound fun, but you have to look after yourself first and foremost. Always remember that your family must be your top priority. TWEET: DONE is better than perfect. @jennswanson2 Omigosh—I have to do this! Do you regularly step “outside your comfort zone”? Jenn says that the more she taught, the more she realized that there was a great need to be able to communicate effectively. Using language properly reduces tension in relationships---and couldn’t we all stand to communicate more effectively? Jenn explains how she found podcasting, met some great people who helped her along the way, and got hooked! TWEET: Take what you love to do and turn it into a paying gig. @jennswanson2 Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Set a goal. It’s one thing to imagine a dream, but it’s another to write it down or tell someone you’re gonna do it. It adds another level of commitment. Break it down into small steps and do ONE thing today.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:15] Jenn’s eclectic background and her initial dream to pursue acting [3:14] Why Jenn didn’t go to acting school [6:25] Pursuing another dream in serving others [9:10] Balancing jobs, school, practicum training, and family [11:05] Getting ruthless with self-care [12:20] How Jenn’s kids lived out her dream of theater school [15:00] Discovering the world of podcasting [17:40] Looking back on 6 years of podcasting [19:33] Unexpected opportunities [21:14] Upcoming plans for Jenn [23:29] Doing it on your own terms [25:30] Why slow down? Part of the upbringing should include finding strategies that will fully develop all of those brain cells. When done correctly their child will be able to meet their full physical, emotional, mental and soul’s potential.” Topics discussed in this episode, include: The Whole-Listic Children’s Foundation Jenn’s story of helping her children find their voice, literally Connecting with your children through love Infertility Balancing stress levels to assist with proper healing The link between nutrition and our thoughts and emotions The emotion that hits parents when they realize that their child is dealing with a diagnosis and how to work with it The technique that was used to heal 8,000 diseases Our Emotional Guidance System How to gain access to our well being and greatness How to systematically quiet your mind Dr. S’s tool that he uses to hack his meditation How to tweak the law of attraction to create consistent results The missing component to law of attraction Loving your child into their greatness When to create a spiritual routine to support your child as a parent The impact of using phrases like “Be Careful” with your child The unpublished formula for all of the illnesses in the world How Jenn used music to help her child to learn to speak The Gifted Academy and more... Founder of Gainesville Holistic Health Center Co-Founder, Whole-Listic Children’s Foundation and Hospital Chairman of Research, Sacro Occipital Research Society International Stéphane Provencher’s earliest memories resounded with cries of pain and discomfort. Massively obese and bullied throughout childhood, he knew one thing for certain; he was not normal. “By the time my parents divorced, it was clear that any personal road map I might have developed was shattered, my destiny was a vague memory wrapped in the solitude of despair. It was years later, after leaving school and traveling to Europe, after reading The Alchemist that I discovered my limiting beliefs were no more than an illusion. I began to ask Who am I? Why am I here? Stéphane was now free to recall how his gift for intuiting where in their bodies’ people held pain, enabled him to feel what they were feeling and help heal their emotional wounds. This awareness guided his dedicated studies and career in chiropractic as he began to understand how the intertwined relationship of the body, mind, and spirit worked together. For Stéphane, learning how emotions—not purely physical ailments—cause 90% of all pain and dis-ease, was not as much revelatory as confirmatory. The staggering realization that emitting or sending frequencies of love can restore proper balance forever changed Stéphane Provencher’s life and the lives of those he serves. “I am 100% clear that I am a vehicle. My commitment and passion is to guide as many as possible to wellness through self-love and knowledge. I invite you to initiate your own extraordinary journey of the soul.” Dr. Provencher’s dream from a young age to unite a multi-faceted model of health care in one place is underway and coming to fruition with the building of the Whole-Listic Children’s Hospital. Meet Jenn Mundia, singer-songwriter behind this very podcast’s intro music!  Jenn just finished Phoebe Robinson’s “You Can’t Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain,” and we just HAD to talk about it. In this episode, we dig into Phoebe’s love for black girls, the EPIC moment in black women/ Shondaland TV history (“WHY IS YOUR PENIS ON A DEAD GIRL’S PHONE?!?”), the subversive power of Phoebe’s unique style of humor and relatability, and why you should never EVER engage with “Devil’s Advocate” guy on Facebook or IRL. Find Jenn’s glorious music here, and here!   SHOW NOTES 2: 49—If Jenn’s voice sounds familiar, it’s because she’s literally the first voice you hear when you open this podcast! 3:58 – Jenn found Phoebe’s writing style very conversational, and thoroughly 2017 4:10 – My thoughts on the conversational, informal style of “You Can’t Touch My Hair,” and how her writing grounds the book without dating it. 6:20 – Phoebe is using her writing style to set the stage for what she wants to discuss about being an actor, comedian and all-around black woman in Hollywood and beyond. 6:48 – Phoebe makes a point that black hair is so integral to OUR culture, and how black hair is a THING, and how the way our hair is styled can affect how people treat us, and how we think of ourselves.     8:15– How Jenn resonates with Phoebe’s commentary on black hair, as a singer-songwriter-performer. 11:30– What Phoebe says is the single greatest moment in black woman TV history: “WHY IS YOUR PENIS ON A DEAD GIRL’S PHONE?!” 12:10– How removing Annaliese Keating’s wig removal on “How to Get Away with Murder” was “revealing” for Viola Davis as an actress, and gave us the greatest moment in Shondaland history. 13:30 – Is Jenn the “black friend” for anyone? 14:00 – Why Phoebe says not to become friends with any new white people in summer. 14:30 – My favorite way to not become the “black friend” is to NOT to keep talking to the “Devil’s Advocate Guy.” 14:45 – You know the “Devil’s Advocate Guy.” His posts on Facebook usually start with, “I never start with my opinions on Facebook…”   15:00 – Brionna’s “Devil’s Advocate Guy” story, and how she disengaged from his shenanigans (TRIGGER WARNING: We discuss the N-word from 13:45-17:30i) 17:45 – Jenn’s OPP recommendations: “The Black Guy Who Tips” because it’s “super informative and ratchet”; “Another Round” because it’s great to see black girls thriving; “Storycorps” for the amazing interviews of families and friends interviewing each other. 18:45 – My book rec for Jenn is Issa Rae’s “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.” 17:55 – Find Jenn Mundia at jennmundia.com and on Facebook, Instagram, iTunes.

Hey hey! Welcome to a bonus edition of Life on Fire. Our guest from episode 182, Jenn Beninger, has such a compelling personal story I had to bring her back to share it with you. If you’ve ever felt like you were wandering around your life like a lost puppy you’ll relate to Jenn. On today’s show we talk about how she went from being that lost puppy to living a life on fire, and what that life on fire looks like for her now. In this episode you’ll hear:   When did Jenn’s life shift? (3:20) Why negative thoughts pop up when we’re up to big things. (4:45) Why we used the phrase “Bye Felicia!” to help Jenn, and how it will help you too. (6:55) How Jenn made 3 calls and landed 2 clients! (9:35) And so much more! Jenn has been self-employed for quite awhile. She started her first business back in 1997, it was a wedding consultant business. While she was successful at it for many years she also felt like she was lacking purpose, there was something more for her beyond what she was doing. Life has a way of stepping in and it did not long ago: her business fell apart and Jenn began to wander like a “lost puppy” (her words!). The wandering went on for a good six months til Jenn attended an event where I was speaking, an event she felt she absolutely had to attend. Prior to the event we hadn’t met; in fact she hadn’t heard of me or my company before I was on stage that day. But after I shared my story she felt compelled to introduce herself. We talked a bit and I gave her my card, she promised to get in touch but never did. Something about about her and our conversation stuck with me so when I didn’t hear from her I reached out to a mutual friend and asked for him to connect us. Even though he thought it was weird he did! After talking with Jenn I suggested she take part in one of my coaching programs. She was reluctant to make the financial investment, her business had gone under after all so I suggested we do a VIP day together. I promised her if she didn’t get a breakthrough and didn’t have an incredibly transformative experience from the VIP day I’d give her her money back. She took me up on it and came to San Diego. After a lot of avoidance on her part we came up with her passion and purpose: she loves video and helping people spread their message with video so she is now a YouTube marketing expert. Since that day she’s started an entirely new company with more passion and more purpose then she’s had before. In less than a year since that fateful VIP day she has built a thriving company serving other successful entrepreneurs with done-for-you services and products. She’s raised her health game as well, dropping 30 pounds! Her business, her health, her family and her life are all a reflection of finding her true passion and purpose. On today’s show we talk about how she broke through her negative thought patterns to create a truly amazing life on fire! Have a listen for all of that and more on this bonus episode of Life on Fire.
