This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Jonathan Marko, the Detroit Bar Association's Civil Rights Chair and founder of Marko Law (https://markolaw.com/).   Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review   Episode Details: Jonathan Marko, the Detroit Bar Association's Civil Rights Chair and founder of Marko Law,  shares how he secured justice for Lisa and Cedric Griffey, a husband and wife who suffered racial discrimination in the workplace. A probation officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections who worked in an all-white office, Lisa was called "mammy" and "the black one," and she was the victim of numerous racially derogatory remarks. Lisa's multiple attempts to file discriminatory harassment complaints through the proper channels were sabotaged, and no action was taken. After Lisa filed suit, Cedric's boss received a copy of Lisa's lawsuit and retaliated against Cedric, alleging that the 2017 Corrections Professional Excellence Award winner did not properly administer discipline. Cedric was forced to resign as deputy warden, ending his 29-year career with the Michigan Department of Corrections. In September 2019, a jury returned the largest employment discrimination verdict in Genesee County, Michigan history, awarding the Griffeys over $11.67 million in economic and non-economic damages. Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents   Guest Bio: Jonathan Marko Jonathan Marko knew that he wanted to be a lawyer for as long as he can remember. As a little boy, he was always being told by his teachers and authority figures to use his inside voice because he was too loud; to not argue with opinions that he didn't agree with; and to always follow the rules, even if they didn't make any sense. These traits that got Jon in so much trouble when he was younger, are what make him a great attorney today. Jonathan grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Aquinas College, a small Catholic liberal arts school for his undergraduate studies, where he obtained a bachelor's in history. After undergrad, Jon set his sights on Washington, D.C. He attended American University for law school, where he was active in the trial advocacy program and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. While in Washington, D.C., Jonathan had the honor to clerk for well-respected Maryland Circuit Court Judge Michael Mason, where he cultivated his passion for trial advocacy and honed his trial skills. Jonathan also had the opportunity to work on Capitol Hill. There he lobbied for clients, especially the interests of Michiganders. After graduating law school, Jonathan was invited to work under the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, Marilyn Kelley. At the Supreme Court, Michigan's highest appellate court, Jonathan worked exclusively on appeals. Although the cloistered environment of the Michigan Supreme Court did not involve the trial advocacy that Jonathan desired, it was there that he was able to pursue intellectual legal issues and help shape and form the law of the state of Michigan. Jon's appellate experience gives him a unique background in his practice today. After working for the Michigan Supreme Court, Jonathan worked under renowned trial attorneys Geoffrey Fieger and Ven Johnson. It was here, that Jon was finally able to practice his life-long dream of being an attorney in the trenches of the courtroom. Jonathan is the principal attorney at Marko Law, located in Detroit Michigan. The firm has a diverse practice helping clients, including injured persons, businesses, civil rights issues, employment litigation, and injuries caused by defective products, and other litigation related matters. If your case is outside of our practice area, we are able to connect you with an extremely capable attorney specializing in the area that you need. Jonathan has been recognized by local and national news outlets for his work in the legal field. He has been on the front page of the Detroit News, he has been featured in the Detroit Free Press, and has been in the New York Times several times. He has been awarded the honor of being named a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers magazine for the past eight years, and has been named one of the top ten personal injury attorneys in the state of Michigan by the National Academy of Personal Injury Lawyers based out of Washington, D.C. Gary and Lisa Black are global minded leaders, full of wisdom, encouragement, and passion for seeing the next generation set free. Speaker and entrepreneur Gary Black, and writer and advocate for the vulnerable, Lisa Black chat about their past experiences in life and passion for reaching the nations. Both of them are global minded leaders doing some major kingdom work and it is incredible. Get ready to be encouraged and inspired!  Introduction to Gary and Lisa Black (1:30) The Black family has lived in a variety of locations around the world, currently they’re living in Mijas, Spain! Gary Black was raised in a religious home and his mother and sister with special needs passed away at a young age. In the midst of having a large influence within national ministry, Gary also had a very challenging first marriage. At one point, his boys were kidnapped by his wife and eventually he won full custody of them back. After a painful season of divorce, Gary met Lisa and added two more daughters to the family. Meeting Seth Barnes (6:15) After Lisa and Gary met founder of the World Race Seth Barnes, this changed the trajectory of their life. Several months later their family sold everything they had and moved all 8 of the family members to Swaziland, Africa to pursue ministry opportunities locally and to mentor young adults on the World Race journey. A Tragic Loss (7:30) The Black family’s son who was a USA Rugby player got caught up with the cartels which eventually led to a violent death. In this time, Gary and Lisa felt like they could not make it through, but eventually found themselves in Spain, learning to let the pain transform them from the inside out. A Background on Lisa Black (9:30) Lisa was married at 19 years old and had children shortly after. Her first husband struggled with alcohol addictions and one night after years of being abstinent, he was killed from an accidental fall, resulting in a fatal head injury. God’s Provision (12:30) As Lisa worked through the trauma of her first husband’s death, she met an intriguing man, named Gary and soon fell head over heels. While it was a bit of a wild transition, she knew it was provision from the Lord for both of them. The Best Comfort (14:30) We are called to be comforted by God and as we let Him comfort us, it will transform you from the inside out! Pain used for Glory (16:00) God will always use our pain, He won’t let anything go to waste. Radical Obedience (17:00) When a husband and wife give their yes to God together, it’s a very powerful thing. To follow Christ with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, will cost everything, but it is totally worth it. Be Faithful (21:00) Gary encourages listeners to be faithful with what you have in your hands right now, do it really really well, and then see what God does with it next. Involvement with the World Race (22:00) Gary and Lisa are currently involved with the World Race ministry, where they help lead gathering events across the globe as well as help coach young adults on their transition back to the states. Generation 42 Leadership Academy (23:00) Generation 42 Leadership Academy is a nine month program focused on discipling and empowering creative leaders to go and be all that they were made. This academy focuses on training young adult leaders how to live missional, wherever their feet may go. A Call to All Generations (26:00) No matter what generation you were born in, we’re all called to partner together and see younger generations come alive. Millennials want to be discipled and boomers desire to have authentic relationships with the younger generation. As generations partner together, God’s glory will fill the whole earth. Landing Zones (29:00) Gary and Lisa have a passion to get a global network of wild people, willing to join in on multi-generational discipleship together. You can learn more about this by connecting with them here. All Seasons (30:00) God will use us wherever we are or whatever season we find ourselves in, if we allow it. Rise Up (31:00) It’s time for men to speak up be the leader they are meant to be within families and to the world. After the emails we went back to the phones and took an inheritance call from Jenny in Seattle. We’ve been taking listener calls for just about eight years now...I can easily say that this will go down as one of the most memorable calls in the history of my podcast and radio show. Her fiction has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prize Stories, and New Stories from the South, and has appeared in numerous magazines, including One Story, Glimmer Train, The Iowa Review, The Missouri Review, and The Sun. She is a writer-in-residence and professor at Dickinson College, and her new book, The Fall of Lisa Bellow, is out now. In this episode Susan and I discuss: How we get to know characters through little glimpses of their lives (in writing workshop terms, we get a lot of “showing” rather than “telling”). We dive into one of those moments in Susan’s process and unpack how writers can give readers a full perspective of the characters by showing them in a scene. Why it is important for writers to be able to write short form as well as book-length fiction. We also discuss some of the challenges and some of the advantages that short form brings to the craft of writing. The use of imagery (both in simile and metaphor) to convey complex ideas or emotions. When using simile or metaphor in this way, we talk about what writers need to think about. Plus, Susan’s #1 tip for writers. About the Author Susan Perabo is the author of two short story collections, Why They Run the Way They Do and Who I Was Supposed to Be, and the novel, The Broken Places. Her fiction has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prize Stories, and New Stories from the South, and has appeared in numerous magazines, including One Story, Glimmer Train, The Iowa Review, The Missouri Review, and The Sun. She is Writer in Residence and Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. Her new book, The Fall of Lisa Bellow, is out now. The Fall of Lisa Bellow When a masked man with a gun enters a sandwich shop in broad daylight, Meredith Oliver suddenly finds herself ordered to the filthy floor, where she cowers face to face with her nemesis, Lisa Bellow, the most popular girl in her eighth grade class. The minutes tick inexorably by, and Meredith lurches between comforting the sobbing Lisa and imagining her own impending death. Then the man orders Lisa Bellow to stand and come with him, leaving Meredith the girl left behind. After Lisa’s abduction, Meredith spends most days in her room, slipping from her world into Lisa’s. As the community stages vigils and searches, Claire, Meredith’s mother, is torn between relief that her daughter is alive and helplessness over her inability to protect or even comfort her child. Her daughter is here, but not. Like Everything I Never Told You and Room, The Fall of Lisa Bellow is edgy and original, a hair-raising exploration of the ripple effects of an unthinkable crime. It is a dark, beautifully rendered, and gripping novel about coping, about coming-of-age, and about forgiveness. It is also a beautiful illustration of how one family, broken by tragedy, finds healing.   For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/141
