A professional ultra runner for Nike Trail sits down with me today to share her athletic career journey and coaching experiences. She has won 3 USATF National Championships, has a Master's Degree in Sport and Performance Psychology, is an author of Mental Training for Ultrarunning, and, currently, is a Mental Performance Consultant at Strive Mental Performance, Addie Bracy. I begin to ask Addie about how she was recruited as a Division I (DI) athlete, and she then tells me the different experiences she had which contributed a lot to her performance to progress and made her become a team captain and school record holder. As she's a performance consultant, I confirm with Addie how a coach sees an athlete's performance and know whether he/she fits in the team. From there, I gather from her that there are two predictors that give an idea of how long an athlete might be performing in the sport. Moreover, we talk about the negative mental self-talk of athletes, and Addie gladly shares what she does to help athletes handle it. She added what's this "trap" that collegiate and professional athletes easily fall into that leads to having an unproductive mental performance. She also openly talks about her plans on retiring from running and her realizations throughout her athletic career. Watch the full interview to hear more from Addie and find out what thing she considers as one of the biggest mental barriers to ultrarunning. Her mission is to teach high performers the critical role that Mental Skills Training has on performance. She helps athletes feel confident and focused when it matters the most through teaching tools and strategies based on sports psychology research. Camille has worked with musicians, athletes, coaches, children, and business leaders. Her experience as an athlete, educator, and personal trainer, make her a consultant with a wide variety of skills to adapt to your individual needs. She completed the well-known Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program, which has helped her appreciate meditation, as she believes it is key in cultivating mindfulness and improving overall performance. In this episode, Camille starts by sharing what inspired her to become a mental performance consultant. She then discusses the most common mental performance challenges in the profession. The first mental performance skill that Camille speaks about is energy management. The best athletes use mental skills and strategies to manage and optimize their mental and physical energy. Camille discusses mindset strategies to help athletes avoid and deal with burnout. The second mental performance skill that Camille speaks about is self-talk. Being aware of your self-talk during and after training and competition is essential for creating and maintaining optimal performance. Camille explains the different ways someone can use self-talk positively to regulate their thoughts and emotions to help reduce stress and anxiety. The third mental performance skill that Camille speaks about is emotional control. It is essential to identify the mental breakdowns that cause you to lose emotional control during your athletic performance in order to learn how to gain emotional control and heighten your overall performance. Camille explains how athletes can overcome some of these mental breakdowns by learning how to identify, regroup, and refocus emotional control. The fourth mental performance skill that Camille speaks about is visualization. It involves creating or re-creating an athletic experience in your mind using all five senses for the purpose of enhancing your athletic performance. Camille explains how and when in training and competition can an athlete mentally rehearse how they see themselves when performing the sport. The last mental performance skill that Camille speaks about is emotional negative thinking. It is important for athletes to be aware of their thinking patterns during training and competition in order to maximize their overall athletic performance. Camille talks about the mental fitness tools that an athlete use to shift their mindset from negative to positive thinking. Camille then talks about what separates a good athlete from a great athlete. Lastly, she provides his definition of greatness and what it means to her. __ Host: Ben Mumme Twitter: https://twitter.com/mumme_ben Medium: https://benjaminmumme.medium.com/ YouTube: https://bit.ly/3fAcFrt Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3DBkSWv Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/livingyourg... __ Guest: Camille Charbonneau Website: https://www.peakperform.ca/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach.camcharb/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/camillecharbonneau/ __ Let's Connect

She’s a professional runner, she’s a cofounder for OUTrun which connects and supports LGBTQ+ individuals, she is a Runners Alliance ambassador, which highlights harassment on the trails, and she’s the author of “Mental training for ultra running”. She was kind enough to join me on the podcast and talk about how she got to where she is today and we even got to a listener's question from Twitter. It was a great chat and I think you will enjoy everything she had to say! She is really excited about getting to share what she has learned and make it accessible. “My main goal was to make that information very accessible. The book was mainly the first project I did after school. I want this to be distributed as much as it can be. So that's been kind of the motive the last few years.” “I think sometimes people just want to not have those negative thoughts and they think that if they do, then, okay, well, I'm having this negative thought about this situation and it kind of spirals from there. Obviously, it's hard to come back from that, but in reality that's normal.” Here you can follow Addie’s Instagram and Twitter pages. Jessica Renney and Paula McQuaid are the co-founds HONE Athletics, are both practicing Psychotherapists, and are Professional Members of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Growing up, Jessica was an avid athlete and her dad coached 13+ years in the NHL. Paula was also an avid athlete and has had the opportunity to work with Hockey Canada as a Mental Performance Consultant with the Women's U-18 National Team, winning a bronze medal (2018), gold medal (2019) and silver medal (2020) at IIHF World Championships. They combined their athletic and professional experiences to create Hone Athletics. In our final episode of our declaration of war against the old school coaching mentality, Jessica and Paula really spoke to the importance of mental health and the needed shift in sport. Here are some key takeaways: The culture for sport is one of the biggest indicators for an athlete's mental health Athletes want to talk about their mental health and have that support That athletes need sport specific mental health strategies How mental health has been neglected, underserved and untapped in sport The importance for coaches to take care of their own mental health It is the coaches responsibility to a make a difference in the culture, but a lot don't know how to do it Mental health and mental performance are not about ‘fixing people' Coaches have an enormous opportunity to shift the culture and have impact on their athletes outside of sport This honest and insightful discussion around mental health in sport is exactly why we dedicated this season to fight against the ‘Old-School' ways of thinking. We get what we tolerate and coaches need to take responsibility. Please share this episode with your fellow coaches, players and parents.

Angie Fifer first enrolled at Penn State with a plan to become an athletic trainer. But during a class in sport psychology, she felt a tear roll down her cheek. Instantly, she knew she'd found her calling—to prevent other athletes from having the same experience she had. When she was 16 and an aspiring gymnast, a serious fall on the uneven bars sent her to the hospital and threatened her future in the sport. (Just a heads-up to listeners, she describes the incident in a bit of detail around the 9:56 mark.) The broken bones and stitches weren't the worst part. Far more challenging was the transition from invincible to fragile in others' eyes. Despite supportive parents and teammates, she still felt isolated and depressed without psychological help for the trauma. On this week's Injured Athletes Club, Angie shares more about this experience, as well as her transition to endurance sports and her work helping athletes and others “be their best a little bit more often.” We discuss: How injuries are viewed in gymnastics, and how it's sometimes hard for young athletes to take the long view (5:40) Why gymnasts sometimes fear coming forward with injuries (8:55) The big injury that changed the trajectory of her athletic career, and her life (9:56) The biggest regret she has about that experience (18:55) When it became clear she'd never compete again (22:57) How she found her athletic fire again as an adult (30:35) What happened when she got injured as a runner, and how different the experience was (33:45) The most common emotions she sees in the injured athletes she works with (38:15) How visualization can boost confidence and ease fears of re-injury (40:26) Her biggest advice to coaches (45:13) Resources/links: Angie's website and Twitter You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and now, on Spotify!
