Status Symbols: Water Bottles & Hydration Supplements | Simple Modern Launches TREVI Hydration

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2025 8:48

I don't need to explain to you how biologically imperative it is to stay hydrated, but despite that undeniable fact…us older generations somehow managed to not only survive but thrive without our beloved “emotional support water bottles.” But these reusable water bottles are more than a creature comfort…becoming a canvas for self-expression and personal statements of style among the newest generations. Though, like other status symbols…water bottles come with trends that fluctuate, with a new coveted “it” option rising above the rest every few years. But while I'm hardly a cultural expert on trendy water bottles, I can remember the first water bottle to be perhaps equated with a lifestyle was Nalgene. Next, everyone was carrying around a CamelBak water bottles. Then, a cluster of “trendy” insulated stainless steel bottles from brands like YETI, S'well, and Hydro Flask. As we passed into the current decade, Simple Modern really took control…along with the Stanley tumbler phenomenon . And then currently, I'd probably say the must-have water bottles are either Owala or Ello Cooper. Regardless, the constantly evolving landscape makes one thing clear…water bottle trends are firmly entrenched within our culture, reflecting a society that continually seeks to define itself. But has anyone considered how (beyond water bottle brand choice) further expressions of identity have been evolving from “what adorns the outside” to “what contents are inside”? In the age of TikTok, sharing creative use occasions of your wellness concoctions can be a vehicle to translate niche health trends and a reliable virality path. And in today's world, there are as many “powdered wellness supplements” as there are personalities, and your choices can say a lot about you. To go one step further…these (basically) aspirational mixtures have become (like water bottles) a symbol of status, representing flavor taste, lifestyle taste, and identity by association. But while the synergy between trendy water bottles and powdered hydration supplements might seem obvious, Simple Modern did something unusual when it recently launched TREVI hydration. But why are “stick pack electrolyte drinks” bringing all the boys to the yard? According to recent last 52-week retail data from Circana, dollar sales within the stick pack hydration drink mix category surpassed $1.5 billion (and grew around 20% YoY). And if you consider the various untracked sales channels like ecommerce, that total categorical market size would increase substantially…making it arguably one of the most intriguing functional beverage subcategories. But all this recent fragmented commercialization activity is possible because Liquid IV took one giant leap forward in democratizing the hydration category. In fact, without the “Liquid I.V. Effect” starting to take meaningful shape maybe 6-7 years ago, Simple Modern would not have a viable (let alone lucrative) marketplace to position TREVI hydration as a product for “everyday life.” Though, despite the strong effort by Simple Modern, I just don't believe we will see many more popular drinkware brands jumping into powdered wellness supplements (at least in the same manner of leveraging the drinkware brand equity). But when you understand that the entire supplement industry has mostly a “sea of sameness” composition…there's a chance that differentiation (and defensibility) could be derived from having a unique delivery system (and/or bottle form factor) like Cirkul or Gatorade Gx bottles.

I started riding mountain bike back in the 90's and when hydration packs hit the market the only brand everyone talked about was Camelbak. Even today, that name is still what some people call their bags despite them being from another company. For the most part all bags have been the same type of design until USWE hit the market. They have a different way of securing the bag to your body that keeps the pack from bouncing all over, and after trying one I was an instant believer and fan. This show was engineered on Saturday 27th of January 2024. David Bernstein 0:29 The Spokesmen cycling roundtable podcast is brought to you by Tern bicycles. The good people at Tern are committed to building bikes that are useful enough to ride every day and dependable enough to carry the people you love. In other words, they make the kind of bikes that they want to ride. Tern has e-bikes for every type of rider. Whether you're commuting, taking your kids to school or even carrying another adult, visit www.ternbicycles.com. That's t e r n bicycles.com to learn more. Carlton Reid 1:04 I'm Carlton Reid. And on today's episode we follow my son Josh with 24 hours 24 hours of mountain bike racing on the hills above Strathpeffer in the freezing Scottish Highlands, I was support crew handing Josh his food, water and bubble-free Red Bulls from a rental Range Rover at the side of a fire road climb right on the Strathpuffer course. You'll hear audio recorded during the day when Josh was chipper, and then through the 17 hours of darkness when he was well — spoiler alert — suffering. He managed 20 laps of what's affectionately known as the Puffer. And that's quite some achievement for him because ... Josh Reid 1:57 it's very technical. ... Carlton Reid 1:59 ... because he's more of a roadie/gravel rider. And that snippet of information yelled at me as Josh came past on his first lap told me he'd likely lose a bunch of time on the technical descents. Let's get rolling, beginning with some audio of me clipped from a video recorded on the long drive up to Scotland. We stopped in Glasgow to pick up filmmaker Alfie Marsh who helped Josh produce a stunning film of the event, the YouTube link for which is on the show notes at the hyphen spokesmen.com. I'm not gonna look at you, by the way, I'm going to be keeping my eyes completely focused on the road. So I do not normally drive an internal combustion engine car and certainly not one as mental as this Range Rover that I've got. But Josh needs to go to this event, we're driving on the A9 up towards Inverness, and we're gonna go to Strathpeffer — Josh can tell you exactly what the event we're doing, but clue's in the name, I guess. But to get out there to get all the kit, and to make sure we're kind of comfortable. So we have hired this car. And it's from a company called Turo. So I last time I hired a Turo in America in 2015 when I actually got a Tesla. But here, they've been in the last couple of years. It's basically Airbnb of car hire. So basically rented it off somebody into his personal so it's Gurinder's personal Range Rover. And obviously looking after it's not, you know, it's a rental so don't be gentle, no that you can look after the car. And we're going to be stopping shortly. For coffee breaks, beautiful day here in the Scottish Highlands. And Josh exactly what are we going to so Strathpeffer, what's the event that we're actually physically going to be doing? You're gonna be doing not me. So we're So we're going to Strathpeffer, but the event is Strathpuffer, or people call it the Puffer. And it's a 24 hour mountain bike event going round a 12 kilometre circuit. And as you can see, I've got laden with bikes in the back here. So I've got my gravel bike and full-suss mountain bike. And basically the aim is to just ride around a circuit for 24 hours and not to stop at all and see if I can get on the podium. We're in just outside of Contin. Lots of big setups here. We're in a small, relatively small setup, just the three of us. And we're gonna be riding for 24 hours. And how are you feeling? Yeah, all right. Ready to get going? It was a Le Mans start so all the riderss had to run to get to there Josh Reid 5:16 just in the two hours in on the third lap, and just keep on pushing. Make use of the up hill was very slow on the downhills. I've lost track of the number of laps I've done. I think I'm on lap five just under four hours completed. That means there's 20 to go Yeah, it's starting to feel like a grind going up this hill. Carlton Reid 5:55 Coming back fast. Alfie Marsh 5:56 I can see on the tracker. Josh is literally is just around the corner. There he is. Yes. Josh Reid 6:08 Yes, my four and a half hours in probably about 20 to go. Alfie Marsh 6:16 What's been going on with you so far? Josh Reid 6:18 I feel a bit sick right now. I was like stuffing a wrap with peanut butter and jam in. And then like all the way up to last climb. Got it down on me. But like, coming down I was just like Alfie Marsh How's the riding? good. Josh Reid Oh, it's just really good. Yeah, so much fun like the top it's really tacky, which is quite difficult, considering I'm a roadie. And then the bottom is really like flowy it's very nice. I guess I'm just Yeah, keep keep on plugging away. Yeah, I think last lap I was fifth place. Yeah, last I think I might have missed out a few places. I think last time I looked through a seven Okay, which is about half an hour ago. Alfie Marsh Yeah that's pretty damn good though. Yeah, you're happy with that? Josh Reid Yeah, just keep on going. Yeah, you never know when anyone else is gonna stop please raise your own race. You're gonna pass people you don't know where they are. You have a clue where Carlton Reid 7:13 the music is by Sonder, they're next to us, and will they play music all night long? dDon't suppose so — their batteries will run out. Sonder fella we can always make you on Thank you. Yeah, just coffee or tea or because that'd be nice yeah, yeah. Carlton Reid Thank you. Yeah, I just want to transfer any food you want to wrap? No, Josh Reid 7:57 can't eat it You're good. You're good Carlton Reid 8:05 to what you want and then next lap right you're still back there Josh Reid thank you Carlton Reid you need more food and there's just more and Josh Reid 8:27 more and you just stopped doing my pocket here? I don't hear this okay. Thank you very much. Carlton Reid 8:39 Next lap wrap Josh Reid 8:50 my head was going coming down this last year but see it's nice to see familiar tactics for the next stage. They will more often then take our sunglasses off as it's getting darker ready. Ready for 17 hours of darkness oh good and bad camera wrap. Carlton Reid Wrap is here. Josh Reid I just need some water. Did you find the tablets? Carlton Reid No, I haven't Carlton Reid 9:28 what do they look like? Josh Reid Make it okay. All right. Cool. Thank you guys so much. Pasta. Josh Reid 9:48 Pasta and yoghurt. Carlton Reid 9:51 Okay. Josh Reid 9:55 For more much more apricot? Carlton Reid 9:57 Yeah. Alfie Marsh 9:59 How's it feeling in the Josh Reid It was amazing to start with my first taste it was really good to start with just like fresh air it felt like a new ride. But I started to drag on now keep on plugging away I think I've stopped for about 10 minutes so far. We're about 10 hours two more to halfway to Carlton Reid 10:30 our next one I'm doing now how's it doing? Nothing we're doing okay now that we're found Josh's salts and he's had a look at that. So that is beautiful as pasta that we cooked yesterday or today. When did we cook that pasta last night and it's now got lovely, lovely Strathpeffer mud on it. And he's ingesting that. She's getting extra proteins no doubt from that nice mud. Right so that's his next one that's got salt in and I may as well do his next one as well. After that. I don't he might want to Red Bull while after that lightly. We're going to leave Josh in the mud for a moment and cut to an ad break with my colleague David in the US. Josh Reid 11:23 This podcast is brought to you by Tern bicycles. And you're not far away from the the four and five and six, you're all close together rallied about like 30 minutes. At the moment. Top Five is a possibility. Josh Reid 13:09 Can you get my Camelbak ready for the next lap? Well, pasta I mean you first sandwiches How are you doing your water? Full full. Full. Okay. That's cool. You don't drink much water okay. Daily, they say. Josh Reid 18:42 Now in the second half of the last lap 10 minutes to 10 which would be 24 hours. We have till 11 To finish the loop. So really excited to be done. Carlton Reid 18:57 Been a long night. It was a long 24 hours never mine a long night, Josh. And he came in at just before 10 o'clock. And he was 10th, well done Josh. Josh Reid 19:30 What's going on? That was so much fun. The smell of it. Yeah. Just like knowing now it's done. Well, like I was in pain on my last lap. My hands I couldn't like because all the bumps just came to me properly. I've been awake for 25 hours. Carlton Reid 19:53 When Josh was little when he's about 5, 6, 7 I used to do 24-hour mountain bike events. So really pleased to see Josh is carrying on the family tradition — there has been quite a big gap since the time I was riding 24 hour solos, but they are good events to do. I've never done the Strathpeffer. That was actually after my time when I was riding, but maybeI'll do it next. Yeah, maybe, maybe. It was certainly fun to be there supporting Josh. So well done to him for the 10th place. So many thanks to Alfie Marsh who was doing some of the recording there. And of course, all of the filming, which I grabbed some of the audio from from his footage. And thanks also to Turo for helping out with the the rental Range Rover and of course, to the sponsor of this podcast every single show which is Tern Bicycles. The next show will be out next month, but meanwhile, get out there and ride ...

Known as one of the most inspiring runners in the ultra scene, Sally McRae capped off her incredible journey of completing four 200 mile races in one year with a win at the Moab 240.  Not only did she win Moab, she also won the Grand Slam of 200's and the Triple Crown of 200's this year, all within her very first year of doing 200+ mile races. But it didn't come easy; Sally battled obstacle after obstacle throughout each race. And despite all that, she still chose strong, dug deep, and pushed hard in every race to achieve her biggest dream. In this episode, Sally shares her biggest lessons from Moab and the Grand Slam, wild stories from both Bigfoot and Moab, and her biggest piece of advice for runners who are looking to complete any endurance challenge. Sally is professional trail runner for Nike, BPN, Camelbak, Leki, and COROS. She is also the author of the book “Choose Strong” and host of the “Choose Strong Podcast”, which is meant to inspire people to choose strength over fear in any situation in life. She is also a mother of two on top of it all! We are also joined by my good friend, Leo Fung, who was crew chief at Bigfoot 200 for Sally, and also on the crew team at Moab 240. Leo is one of a kind and an all around great dude, so it was so amazing to have him on the show. Huge thank you to Sally and Leo for coming on the show! The show is hosted each day by professional athlete, Dylan Bowman.   Dylan is joined on Day 2 by three incredible individuals: Topher Gaylord, Keith Byrne and Doug Meyer. Topher was instrumental in founding the UTMB and has been around since the very beginning. Today, he is still the highest placing American male in the UTMB, placing 2nd in 2003. Keith has been at UTMB since 2004 where he has held many roles at the race including, most recently, leading the race commentary. Doug Meyer wrote the book, The Race That Changed Running: The Inside Story of UTMB, and has been privy to many of the important stories behind this race over the years.   They discuss how Topher helped identify and join the UTMB as the founding sponsor when he was leading The North Face in Europe in the early 2000s and why he knew it was going to become one of the best races in the world.   Keith has a longstanding relationship with Catherine and Michael Poletti and pulls the curtain back on their dynamic. UTMB has been a passion project for the Polettis and, as Keith says, they have always focused on their values and what they believe is the spirit of trail running. The team discusses some of the disagreements and controversies that have grown from the race and how things need to shift to keep up with the developing sport and world.   Topher and Keith also discuss what it was like being part of The North Face family in the early days of race sponsorship. The race connected and created bonds with their work family that endure today. Watch on for more and make sure you subscribe to the Freetrail YouTube channel! Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12   https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Aron Ralston is a mountaineer, mechanical engineer, and best-selling author known for surviving a canyoneering accident by cutting off part of his own right arm. On April 26, 2003, during a solo descent of Bluejohn Canyon in southeastern Utah, he dislodged a boulder, pinning his right wrist to the side of the canyon wall. After five days, he had to break his forearm, amputate it with a dull pocket knife to break free, make his way through the rest of the canyon, rappel down a 65-foot drop, and hike 7 miles to safety. The incident is documented in Aron's autobiography Between a Rock and a Hard Place and is the subject of the 2010 film 127 Hours in which he is portrayed by James Franco. After the accident, Aron continued mountaineering and became the first person to ascend all of Colorado's fourteeners solo in winter. "Turn boulders into blessings." During this conversation, Aron takes us through the 127 hours from when his right arm was pinned under a boulder until he was resting safely in a hospital bed. Along the way, he shares key learnings that all of us can take from his experience. In April 2003, Aron was canyoneering alone through Bluejohn Canyon, in Utah, just south of the Horseshoe Canyon unit of Canyonlands National Park. While he was descending the lower stretches of the slot canyon, a suspended boulder dislodged while he was climbing down from it. The boulder first smashed his left hand and then crushed his right hand against the canyon wall. Aron had not informed anyone of his hiking plans, nor did he have any way to call for help. Assuming that he would die without intervention, he spent five days slowly sipping his small amount of remaining water, approximately 350 ml (12 imp fl oz), and slowly eating his small amount of food, two burritos, while repeatedly trying to extricate his arm. His efforts were futile as he was unable to free his arm from the 800 lb (360 kg) chockstone. After three days of trying to lift and break the boulder, the dehydrated and delirious Ralston prepared to amputate his trapped arm at a point on the mid-forearm in order to escape. After having experimented with tourniquets and having made exploratory superficial cuts to his forearm, he realized, on the fourth day, that in order to free his arm he would have to cut through the bones in it, but the tools available were insufficient to do so. After running out of food and water on the fifth day, Aron decided to drink his own urine. He carved his name, date of birth, and presumed date of death into the sandstone canyon wall, and videotaped his last goodbyes to his family. He did not expect to survive the night, but as he attempted to stay warm he began hallucinating and had a vision of himself playing with a future child while missing part of his right arm. Aron credited this as giving him the belief that he would live. After waking at dawn the following day he discovered that his arm had begun to decompose due to the lack of circulation, and became desperate to tear it off.  Aron then had an epiphany that he could break his radius and ulna bones using torque against his trapped arm. He did so, then amputated his forearm with his multi-tool, using the dull 2-inch knife and pliers for the tougher tendons. The painful process took an hour, during which time he used tubing from a CamelBak as a tourniquet, taking care to leave major arteries until last. The manufacturer of the multi-tool was never named, but Aron said "It was not a Leatherman but what you'd get if you bought a $15 flashlight and got a free multi-use tool." After freeing himself, Ralston climbed out of the slot canyon in which he had been trapped, rappelled down a 65-foot sheer wall, then hiked out of the canyon. He was 8 miles from his car and had no phone. However, after 6 miles of hiking, he encountered a family on vacation from the Netherlands; Eric and Monique Meijer and their son Andy, who gave him food and water and hurried to alert the authorities. Aron had feared he would bleed to death; he had lost 40 pounds, including 25% of his blood volume. Rescuers searching for Ralston, alerted by his family that he was missing, had narrowed the search down to Canyonlands and he was picked up by a helicopter in a wide area of the canyon. He was rescued approximately four hours after amputating his arm. The STOP acronym: Stop (pause), Think (brainstorm), Observation, Plan Stop Think Observe Plan "Commitment is the first step." At one point when Aron's arm was stuck under the giant rock, he filmed his "goodbyes" to each family member. "Who would you say your goodbyes to and what would you say?" Aron realized that life is all about loving relationships. "You can't hold despair and gratitude at the same time." 127 Hours - There is no force so powerful as the will to live. Aron's version: "There's no force so powerful as the will to love." "Welcome adversity. It helps you grow." "Find gratitude for the worst thing that's ever happened to you." “Passion. That which I suffer, allow, endure, is done to me.”

This is Episode 26 of Season 3 and in it, Jec and I talk with Dr. Sheree King about science, specifically equine research. But it's also a conversation of how to consider science in today's world of scholarly access, social media, and, quite frankly, the troubling politics around scientific information. For most of my life, I have embraced science, research, the power of the scientific method, putting ideas out there and testing them. I've conducted research and I've assisted others with research projects. In case you were noodling on just what science is --  it is the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained. I am happy to approach my horse work with a critical eye nurtured, I think, by my science-y background. Do you consider your horse work like this? We would love to hear from you. Dr. King is a founding board member and a keynote presenter at the Best Horse Practices Summit. We wanted to chat with her about how horse studies can influence riders and horse owners, how equine research can inform or, unfortunately, mislead folks, and how as information consumers, we really need to have an open mind and a critical eye towards horse studies. We talk specifically about a Equine Guelph study involving 20 ponies and their ability to "read facial expressions" of humans. Here is the study and here is a YouTube video with the studies' author, Dr. Katrina Merkies. We also talk about how to tell good science from, well, less good science. Check out some Best Horse Practices articles calling out sketchy science here and here. A few notes from sponsors: We have several discounts and reviews on our web pages, so head to this page  to grab the codes and check out reviews on some great new products: Bobo's oat bars area made here in Colorado. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds.  Forage is chopped, packaged hay. Sometimes it's alfalfa, sometimes timothy, sometimes blended, and sometimes with a touch of molasses. Always scrumptious. Have you ever hiked in the pitch black night with nothing to guide you but your headlamp and a somewhat reliable GPS?  We've done more than our fair share of night hiking, but Whitney wins for being the most impressive, oppressive, and exhilarating! We scored a single-day permit for Mt. Whitney for July 31st of 2022! Now, what this means is that we were blessed with a 24-hour period in which to hike the tallest peak in the contiguous U.S.A., 14,505 ft of forests, creeks, and granite over ~23.5 miles up and back down with ~6,400 ft of total hiked ascent (according to my Garmin; 20.9 miles, 6,600ft according to AllTrails).  This trip was made extra-special by some dramatic weather that opened up on us with ~5 miles to go in our hike, resulting in washed out trails, washed out selves, and rockfalls booming down the mountain as though Thor was having a temper-tantrum. We loved a lot, learned a lot, and lucked out a LOT on this trip! In this episode, Jec visits with Lynn Acton for a Coaches' Corner discussion around treats. I am really pleased that they are taking this topic. Like you, I have an opinion around treating that has been reinforced by experience and experimentation. In general, I don't feed treats. I think it can absolutely create a safety problem and I believe there are much better ways to reward a horse. But. I have found that specific, knowable treats are really handy. For instance, I often head out many miles into the backcountry and hobble all four horses to let them graze while I read or cat nap. Hobbles are great but horses can still go pretty fast in them if they want to. What helps, when I am rounding them up to head home, is the crinkle of the familiar green wrapper of granola bars. (The bars, if you must know, are simple oat and honey Nature Valley granola bars.) They hear the crinkle. They see the bar. They stand contented as I get the hobbles off and lead them to my saddle horse. This was also a handy conditioning when, um, three of them got loose early the other morning. Treating also leads into a conversation about petting and what you do with your horse and what you should do or, more importantly, not do, with other people's horses. But that's another episode, right? Please let us know what you think! Like you, I've been around friends and other horse owners who feel way different that I do when it comes to treating. Lynn and Jec have great insight. So, in our usual podcast style, we're putting forth some reasonable opinions and look forward to hearing from you. As a follow up to my episode about Power, Sex, and Best Horse Practices, I want to say that I was really encouraged by the feedback. Lucerne is this outstanding little company in northern Maine, founded by his George and Susie James, I have known their son and Lucerne's current owner Rich James and his wife Hannah for years and have sung their praises just as long. We all know that forage, whether it's grass or hay, is what horses evolved eating. Not too much has changed over thousands of years. What has changed is our horses' access to pasture land which, of course, provides them with the forage they need on any given day. This is where Lucerne Farms comes in. Forage is chopped hay, an excellent option when you can't have your horse on pasture or when you need to add calories and nutrients to your horses' diet. We also thank Redmond Equine for being part of our sponsorship family. Redmond rocks and other offerings come straight from their mine in Redmond, Utah. In this episode, Jec visits with Mary Ann Simonds in a discussion around how to keep horses happy in their domestic spaces. It's a wide ranging interview and Mary Ann well versed in a wide range of subjects. While her work is mostly with sport horses and competitive riders, there are a lot of take-aways for us more ordinary riders with our more ordinary horses.  I think you will also dig the Riding Season Reviews page on NickerNews. Every year, we dedicated space and time to review gear – clothing, horse camping and saddle bag must haves. We have products from Camelbak, Patagonia, Nomadix, Outdoor Pantry, Hoka, Duckworth, and more.  We thank Lucerne Farms for their sustaining sponsorship. Lucerne is a forage company based in Northern Maine. Forage is chopped hay, an excellent option when you can't have your horse on pasture or when you need to add calories and nutrients to your horses' diet. Redmond rocks and other offerings come straight from their mine in Redmond, Utah.  This interview really got me thinking about creative ways to enhance a horse's day. My four horses are in a dry lot most of the time. It is about 80 by 150 feet and has a run-in shed. They get turned out to several acres of pasture, which in the high desert of southwestern Colorado, is mostly dirt, for a few hours every day. I have panels in the dry lot that they go around and use strategically if they want to get away from another horse. I see that space awareness is definitely an effective language of my social herd. Just this winter, the geldings started entertaining themselves by playing with small rubber tubs (that I use to put soaked alfalfa cubes in). They have this funny game of picking up the tubs, playing of tug of war and generally being goofy. So I know that sometimes enhancing a space can come about through chance and observation. Anyway, I thought Mary Ann's points around the need for lots of social interaction was spot on.  We thank Kate's Real Food and Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. Did you know?
