Send us a textHow To Run The Perfect Race is a book all about pacing. The book is divided into two sections:Section 1: All about how to master pacingSection 2: RPE based training plans for your next 5k, 10k, half-marathon and marathon.Pacing isn't about having an even pace on your Garmin. It's about having an even effort which takes into account things like terrain and weather conditions on race day. Pacing may sound easy but most of us aren't very good at it (and definitely not as good as the pro's); in fact, Matt gives some examples in the book of professional athletes who can run a pace perfectly without their GPS watch… they just know how it feels.  Matt Fitzgerald is an acclaimed endurance sports coach, nutritionist, author, and co-founder of 80/20 Endurance. His many books include The Endurance Diet, 80/20 Running, and How Bad Do You Want It? Matt's writing also appears regularly in magazines and on websites such as Women's Running and outsideonline.com. His online training plans have helped thousands of athletes of all experience and ability levels achieve their goals. Certified by the International Society of Sports Nutrition, Matt has consulted for numerous sports nutrition companies and he is the creator of the Diet Quality Score (DQS) smartphone app. A lifelong athlete, he speaks frequently at events throughout the United States and internationally… and has been on many podcasts to share his knowledge as well.  If you're interested in getting a copy of this book, you can find it here (with links to popular outlets like Amazon):  https://www.simonandschuster.ca/books/How-to-Run-the-Perfect-Race/Matt-Fitzgerald/9798989256945Support the Show.Any feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. O escritor de "How Bad Do You Want It" narra nele o embate épico entre Dave Scott e Mark Allen no Ironman de 1989. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

In this episode we get to chat with author, Ryan Whited, about his book (co-authored with Matt Fitzgerald) Pain + Performance. Pain + Performance  is a book that aims to explain how pain is a normal human experience and not something that we need to try and get rid of… at least not completely. Pain also doesn't always mean tissue damage as we are mostly taught to believe. Author Ryan Whited has been helping athletes at his gym, Paragon Athletics, for many years using the biopsychosocial model of pain. In this book, he shares his own experience with pain, what the research says about pain, what the biopsychosocial model of pain is and Paragon's Training as Treatment model that anyone can use to work their way through non-traumatic injuries.Ryan Whited is a personal trainer, elite climber, and the founder of Paragon Athletics, a gym that empowers athletes with sport-specific strength and conditioning to complement their performance goals. His passion for working with athletes and investigating the nature of biomechanics and human performance is the basis for Paragon's innovative Training as Treatment program. Paragon has become a destination for both novice and elite athletes who find themselves sidelined by chronic pain or injury. As a specialist in pain science and physiology, Ryan uses his experience as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist to help his clients avoid surgery, reduce or eliminate pain, and return to their sports with more resilience.  Matt Fitzgerald is an acclaimed endurance sports coach, nutritionist, author, and co-founder of 80/20 Endurance. Rachael Cunningham won the free race entry to IRONMAN New Zealand. We find out more about her. We explore the crucial role of mental fitness in endurance sport and its significance for both performance and recovery. We discuss how athletes handle pre-race anxiety and stress differently and the mental resilience required in elite adventure racing where cognitive stamina and decision-making under duress are as crucial as physical ability. We share insights from an episode of That Triathlon podcast with certified psychologist Stuart Holliday, who specializes in working with endurance athletes. Stuart discusses the o of self-talk and the need for athletes to conduct a robust self-assessment, examining their psychological approach before, during and after races.  We introduce Matt Fitzgerald's book "How Bad Do You Want It?" as a resource for understanding and improving mental toughness in the face of adversity. We examine key concepts such as the central governor theory by Tim Noakes, discussing the role of the brain and mind in athletic performance. We also explore the notion that athletes don't encounter their true physical limits due to a maximum tolerance for perception of effort. While some individuals possess an innate ability to push past their perceived limits, for most, this is a skill that can be developed. We touch on cases where athletes perform significantly better on race day compared to their training sessions, suggesting a psychological component that unlocks higher intensity and effort levels. Lastly, we consider the role of psychology in recovery, discussing practices like yoga nidra and meditation, which can aid in activating the parasympathetic nervous system for improved rest and digestion. Another L in the books after an offensive slug fest between Miami and Detroit. Our defense was unequipped to handle the Tyreek Hill/Jaylen Waddle duo and our secondary in particular got exposed. So much so that the Lions made a coaching change Monday by firing DBs Coach Aubrey Pleasant. We take a peek under the curtain to see what we have in store for us next week with our first matchup against the Green Bay Packers this season. We get into a little trade deadline talk. We recorded on Monday and news has since broke about the TJ Hockenson deal to the Vikings. Belly and Sean's predictions were correct but I look like a complete jackass looking back just one day later. We bring back the Meme of the Month for this episode. The Bowels of the Belly was quick but efficient this week like most of Ben's trips to the bathroom. Not the bounce back the Lions were looking for coming off their bye week. Big Mart joins the team today to talk about the loss to the Cowboys. Our defense stood tall and impressed with their young players stepping up. Jared Goff continues to ride a cold streak and needs to be better in order to get this team some wins.Detroit will look to shake off the loss next week against the Miami Dolphins. Hopefully being home at Ford Field can give them some juice. We could really use a healthy Swift and St. Brown. This week we bring Eric on for an intervention. The Art of Manliness

Running is a gloriously democratic and accessible sport. All you need is a pair of shoes and the will to start moving your legs. It's so seemingly simple, that you may never think to figure out how you might get better at it — you just follow what your peers may be doing (who may not know anything more than you do), or pick up tips that percolate through social media (which may not be accurate), or 100% wing it, just vaguely trying to get a little faster each time you run.My guest says that, rather than taking a willy-nilly approach to your recreational running, you can greatly improve your performance by learning from the professionals who actually run for a living. His name is Matt Fitzgerald and he's a sports writer, a running coach, and the co-author of Run Like a Pro (Even If You're Slow): Elite Tools and Tips for Runners at Every Level. Today on the show Matt translates the best practices of elite runners into tactics the amateur can incorporate into their training, beginning with why you need to follow a well-programmed running plan, how to find the sweet spot for your running volume — including why you actually should concentrate more on the amount of time you run rather than the miles — and the number of hours Matt recommends trying to work up to running each week if you'd like to really see what you can do as a runner. We then discuss the ratio of low intensity to high intensity workouts you should be doing, the surprisingly small emphasis pros put on running form, what the pros know about what works best for recovery, and the edge you can get through cross-training. We end our conversation with the difference in mindset that marks elite runners, including how they're probably better quitters than you are.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Podcast #202: Matt's previous appearance on the show to talk about How Bad Do You Want It?Ventilatory thresholdBen Rosario, co-author of Run Like a Pro (Even If You're Slow)AoM Podcast #266: The Myths and Truths of Distance RunningAoM Podcast #382: How to Lift More, Run Faster, and Endure LongerAoM Article: Beginner's Guide to Long-Distance RunningAoM Article: Bulletproof Ways to Prevent Running InjuriesConnect With Matt FitzgeraldMatt's personal websiteMatt's business website: 80/20 Endurance
