Pope's Passing and Political Peculiarities

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITEaster Monday brings a mix of solemn reflection and heated debate as we discuss Pope Francis's unexpected passing and what this means for Catholics worldwide – both devout and those who've stepped away from regular religious practice. The conversation takes a sharp political turn when examining former President Trump's recent "thinking out loud" comment about deporting "homegrowns next." This off-the-cuff remark ignited immediate controversy with political commentator Simone Sanders and Representative Glenn Ivey promoting the unfounded fear that Black Americans could be targeted for deportation. We cut through the race-baiting rhetoric to analyze what Trump likely meant about violent criminals while acknowledging the constitutional impossibility of deporting American citizens.Perhaps most passionate is our examination of the Boston Marathon's gender division policies. Coinciding with Patriots Day's 250th anniversary, this iconic American sporting event has permitted biological males to compete in women's divisions since 2018. We highlight the case of Ria Susing (born Robert Sheen Young), who has competed in female categories over 338 times, winning medals in 140+ instances – each victory displacing deserving women athletes. This practice fundamentally undermines athletic fairness and the competitive opportunities women fought decades to secure. When even "Women's Running Magazine" features biological males on covers meant to champion female athletes, we must ask: what spaces remain protected for women in sport? The episode concludes with a thought-provoking question about political awakening. What issues first captured your attention in your formative years? Was it military service, civil rights, environmental concerns, or something entirely different? Share your story and join the conversation about how these early influences shape our lifelong civic participation and values.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening!

Running became a therapeutic outlet for her, and she has now been sober for over seven years. She describes the emotional and physical challenges of her first 50-mile race and the transformative power of ultra running. As the chief editor, Brandy discusses her role at Run Bum Races, potential release date for the magazine, and her vision for East Coast Ultra Running Magazine. Brandy expresses her excitement for the magazine's first episode and the opportunity to bring the community closer together. The conversation also touches on the importance of photographers in capturing the essence of races and the stories of runners. Running saved Alison Mariella Desir's life. Now she wants to save running from itself. Alison's new book, "Running While Black: Finding Freedom in a Sport that Wasn't Built for Us," is a memoir. It simultaneously tells her personal story while uncovering the historic reasons why distance running is a predominantly white sport, tracing it to the origins of the running industry, racial discrimination and white supremacy. Alison decided to train for a marathon to fight depression. It worked. But, she quickly realized her experience as a Black female runner was drastically different from white women. She wrote an op-ed for Outside Magazine called "Ahmaud Arbery and Whiteness in the Running World" that went viral and ultimately led to her book. She is the founder of Harlem Run and Run 4 All Women movement to support women's reproductive rights. She's an advocate, a brand ambassador and most recently, the TV host and producer of "Out and Back with Alison Mariella Desir." Well + Good named her one of its "Changemakers of 2023" and Women's Running Magazine calls her one of the "Power Women of 2022." Running While Black is unlike any other book I've read. It will make you think, make you laugh, and likely make you look at a start line with different eyes. On this Dying to Ask: Who inspired Alison to start running and what she noticed instantly What happened after she started her own running club in Harlem and only one person showed up The historic reasons distance running and the running industry lack diversity Why movement is a powerful agent for social change And the unusual opportunities that have come Alison's way since her memoir came out Connect with Alison Mariella Desir: On Instagram On Twitter Harlem Run Retreat. It wasn't until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the nyc half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the Badass Lady Gang was born.BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. In this episode of the Female Athlete Podcast, I speak with Certified Mental Performance Coach Carrie Jackson. This conversation is full of advice on navigating injuries and rehab that is transferable to REDS and disordered eating recovery. Carrie discusses her career journey, the gaps she saw in how injured athletes were managed, and how she is filling them through the work she does today. Carrie speaks about a snowboarding injury that was the catalyst to the work she does today; by shifting her mindset and making recovery her sport, Carrie came back to have her best season ever.  We discuss the need for community and support during times of injuries, and we suggest ways to stay involved with your teams even when you can't participate yourself. This starts with making recovery your sport, creating a training plan and setting goals specific to recovery: even when injured, you are still an athlete!  Carrie introduces the idea of recovery check-ins instead of firm timelines: as athletes we hold on to the standard time frames doctors and PTs give but it's important to hold these numbers loosely. Recovery is unpredictable and rarely goes as planned: the time frames are all generic averages but we are unique individuals and should expect a nonlinear path to avoid emotional spiraling. Similarly to athletes looking to improve their nutrition and restore energy balance in the case of REDS, there is no one size fits all plan to injuries, and setbacks are common and expected! Carrie shares the incredible work she does creating communities for injured athletes on her podcast and Facebook group: The Injured Athlete Podcast. We emphasize the need for support, avoiding isolation and normalizing injury as part of training: like with REDS and disordered eating, you are not alone in injury and help is out there. We speak to the mental side of injuries with advice on overcoming adversity and resilience. Carrie emphasizes how skills learned during injuries and recovery can help you to rebound a mentally and physically stronger athlete when you return to your sport. Carrie discusses her work with athletes with diabetes, helping them balance exercise while managing their blood sugar, and putting on training camps to support diabetics with this. She helps everyone embrace an athletic identity and reduce the mental burden of their diagnosis; learn to fuel as an athlete first then treat the diabetes second; and normalize activity within the diabetes community. We differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, raising awareness of the countless challenges and pervasive stigma diabetics face daily that deters them from exercising. Athletes can have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, and diabetics can exercise safely, be athletes, and even perform at the same level as non-diabetics.  Find Carrie and all she does at www.carriejackson.com and on Instagram and Twitter @feedtheathlete and Faecebook @MentalSkillsTrainingforAthletes Check out Carrie's book Rebound https://injuredathletesclub.com/about-the-book/  Join The Injured Athletes Club on Facebook, tune into The Injured Athletes Club podcast and check out www.injuredathletesclub.com  Carrie's Official Bio: Carrie Jackson is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant in Northern California and has been a professional in the field of sport and peak performance psychology since 2002. Found in Transition, A Mother’s Evolution during her Child’s Gender Change with Paria Hassouri M.D.  On Thanksgiving morning, Paria Hassouri finds herself furiously praying and negotiating with the universe as she irons a dress her fourteen-year-old, designated male at birth, has secretly purchased and wants to wear to dinner with the extended family. In this wonderfully frank, loving, and practical account of parenting a transgender teen, Paria chronicles what amounts to a dual transition: as her child transitions from male to female, she navigates through anger, denial, and grief to eventually arrive at acceptance. Despite her experience advising other parents in her work as a pediatrician, she was blindsided by her child’s gender identity. Paria is also forced to examine how she still carries insecurities from her past of growing up as an Iranian-American immigrant in a predominantly white neighborhood, and how her life experience is causing her to parent with fear instead of love. Paria discovers her capacity to evolve, as well as what it really means to parent and the deepest nature of unconditional love. This page-turning memoir relates a tender story of loving and parenting a teenager coming out as transgender and transitioning. It explores identity, self-discovery in adolescence and midlife, and difference in a world that values conformity. At its heart, Found in Transition is a universally inspiring portrait of what it means to be a family. Paria Hassouri, MD, is the author of Found in Transition. A pediatrician, mother of three, and transgender rights activist, her essays have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, and Women’s Running Magazine. She lives in Los Angeles. Today Alex and Lisa speak to Emma Cambell, Aka Limitless Em about her incredible journey of recovery from breast cancer and how she coped living with someone who was alcohol dependent on is own amazing journey to recovery. Em is an author, columnist, speaker and long term cancer thriver. She is known on social media as @limitless_em – a handle she adopted following her third cancer diagnosis in 2019 to serve as a daily reminder to myself that we are all ‘limitless’ and capable of so much more than we often realise. She is passionate about showing that it’s possible to live a big, bold and expansive life despite living with a chronic illness. Her memoir, ‘All That Followed – A Story Of Cancer, Kids And The Fear Of Leaving Too Soon’ was published in August 2018 and charts the story from the birth of her triplets to dealing with breast cancer as a single mum of four and how the anxiety and fear of recurrence impacted so heavily on her life until she began to find a way to look at her circumstances through a different lens. Along with consciously practicing gratitude and being mindful that the thoughts and words we use in every day life have an energy behind them, running has also become one of the wellbeing ‘resources’ she draws on. Alongside the obvious physical benefits, the improvement to her mental and emotional health has been enormous. Em writes a regular column for Women’s Running Magazine , is a proud member of the ‘Celebrate You’ team for the Vitality 10K and recently completed the 2020 40th London Marathon.
