She was born into a royal Yoruban Family, who were tragically killed, leading her into slavery in the house of King Ghezo. At aged 8 she was then given to Queen Victoria as a Diplomatic gift and went on to live a life of privilege and education but under the keen eye of the press and public who were fascinated by her intellect. Although Sarah's life is incredibly unusual it can shed fascinating light on how Victorians viewed race. This week we interviewed Sarah Kiani from the Kiani Homes Team. Although Sarah has an appreciation for the aesthetic side of homes and stunning real estate, her true passion lies with the financial benefits that come with making good real estate decisions. Through her own experience with property investing, she saw just how much of an impact it made in her life, and decided she wanted to make a career out of helping other people do the same. Sarah talks to us about her real estate team, and the success they have had through providing their clients which is essentially a full marketing service solution in order to get their homes sold for the highest price. She also gives us some great insights into the key factors she examines when viewing a new potential investment. Want to know more? Check it out in this episode!

In my workshops and weekly training group for community therapists at Stanford, we often include personal work as a part of the training. The personal work can help in several ways: When you’ve successfully done your own personal work, you will feel greater joy and energy in your personal life and in your clinical work as well. You will have a much deeper understanding of how TEAM-CBT actually works. You will be able to deliver faster and deeper therapy to your patients. You’ll be able to tell your patients, “I know how you feel, because I’ve been there myself. And what a joy it’s going to be to show you the way out of the woods, too!” Those who observe the therapy develop a greater understanding of how the fine points of effective therapy. When the person in the “patient” role has a profound change, we all share that joy and feel inspired by the miracles that can often be accomplished in a relatively short period of time. As they say, “seeing is believing.” Rhonda recently surveyed some of our listeners about live therapy we sometimes offer on our podcasts—do you prefer to have the live therapy presented all at once, in an extended, two-hour podcast, or split up over two or more podcasts with expert commentary along the way? Our listeners were split on this. So today we are presenting an actual and dramatic therapy session in its entirely. If you don’t have two hours to listen all at once, you can stop after an hour or so, and then return to the last portion when you have more time. And please let us know what you think of this live therapy podcast format! In today’s session, we are very grateful to Sarah, a certified TEAM-CBT therapist, for allowing us to share her very personal and powerful session with you. Sarah was having intense anxiety during her sessions with patients, and her anxiety was bordering on panic. This is actually not unusual. In my experience, most shrinks struggle with feelings of insecurity from time to time. But when we shrinks experience insecurities, we often feel strong shame as well, telling ourselves that we “should” have it all together because we are supposedly “experts.” I’m no exception! I can remember how anxious I used to feel on Sundays when I was starting out in private practice. I’d tell myself, “Wow, I’m going to have all of these high-powered patients tomorrow, and what if they notice that I don’t actually know what I’m doing half of the time!?” But then, halfway through Monday morning, it would dawn on me that my patients didn’t seem to notice or care about my flaws, and I’d relax! Although Sarah brought a Daily Mood Log to the session, listing all of the negative thoughts that were triggering her anxiety, along with many other intense negative feelings, the session took an unexpected turn in the direction of the Hidden Emotion Model. We’ve done several podcasts on this powerful technique before, and now you have the chance to see how it works first-hand! Instead of challenging Sarah’s negative thoughts, as we usually do, we asked whether there was something bothering Sarah that she wasn’t telling us about, due to her arguably excessive “niceness.” I think you’ll enjoy listening, and you may learn a little, too! My co-therapists for this session included Dr. Rhonda Barovsky, my beloved and brilliant podcast host, as well as Kevin Cornelius, MFT, a fabulous TEAM therapist whom I’ve recently featured in a recent blog! Rhonda and I want to thank you, Sarah, once again, for your tremendous courage and generosity! David and Rhonda

Setting boundaries with family and friends can be so difficult. My friend Sarah shares what it was like growing up with a mother who had an addiction to pain killers and the process she used to set boundaries, inspired by Brene Brown.  Step 1: Decide what is okay and what is not okay. Step 2: Make a plan. Step 3: Say no instead of feeling resentful. Although Sarah has wished to remain anonymous to protect the other people involved in her story, she bravely opens her heart to share the things she's learned. If you have a loved one struggling with addiction, you are not alone. If you need to set boundaries with a loved one, you are not alone.  Here is a video of Brene Brown explaining the idea of boundaries. Oh. My God! This week I am joined by author, journalist and mother of three Sarah Breen. Sarah is one half of the creative team behind the award winning ‘Aisling’ series of novels. As a former country girl in the city myself, I have laughed and cried my way through both Aisling books so far and can’t wait to see her adventures in book number three: Once, Twice, Three Time an Aisling. And I equally couldn’t wait to hear Sarah’s take on motherhood, and she didn’t disappoint. Sarah’s first child was born in Arizona and Sarah elected to forgo the American hospital system and chose a natural birth centre called the Baby Moon Inn. And it was fascinating to hear how it compared to Sarah’s Irish labours. Especially in regards to the amount of post birth support she was given. Sarah was determined to breastfeed and despite facing early issues (a front and back tongue tie) she persevered and fed her first child up to her third birthday. With three babies and books under her belt I wondered how Sarah found a balance in her life and she fully admits that at the minute her life is very unbalanced and she often finds herself up to 2am in the morning “typing away like a vampire.” Although there’s nothing a good long shower can’t fix - something we both agree on. And of course we talk about her other creation: Aisling and what she would be like as a mother. Although Sarah was keeping tight lipped about what lies in the future for Aisling in both book form and screen, I think we would all agree that Aisling would enjoy organising all the baby clothes! Sarah is super busy at the moment and I was so grateful she agreed to chat with me right in the middle of her hectic press schedule. The latest Aisling book along with the previous books 'Oh My God What a Complete Aisling' and 'The Importance of Being Aisling' are available from all book shops. On today’s episode of Fresh Hope for Mental Health Pastor Brad Hoefs talks with Sarah Robinson. Sarah Robinson is an author who writes about the hard stuff so you don’t feel alone. Brad and Sarah talk about how Life can be really hard, messy, and broken, but it can still be beautiful. Although Sarah loved her church there was some toxic aspects of it. She had to hide how she was feeling it was not okay, to be not okay. Even though God loves everyone, she felt like God didn’t really love her. Over the years she was exposed more to the grace of God and the love of God. Finally someone told Sarah she was living under a cloud of depression and that started her on a three year process of slowing dipping her toes into getting help.   We encourage you to share this podcast with your friends via your social media connections. How to be a Positive Runner When You Don’t Seem to be Improving PR. Perhaps the most commonly used jargon in the running world. In a sport that is largely about competing with yourself, a personal record can mean everything. Hours of pain, sweat, and tears can seem to mean nothing if you don’t believe you are improving. For many runners, coming in even a second earlier is the difference between elation and depression. What is it that makes us feel so deeply about certain numbers? Should we allow ourselves to have such strong emotions about something that is physiologically insignificant? If there’s one person that is qualified to speak on this subject, it’s Sarah Crouch. Since the age of 14, Sarah was an elite runner. For 11 years straight, she set a personal record. Whether it was a 10k, a half marathon, or a full marathon, she had a race time she could celebrate, and a hunger to improve. However, around the age of 25 her luck seemed to run out. For the next four years, Sarah could not beat her past self. It wasn’t until she was faced with increased uncertainty that she found what she was looking for. What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Grateful Tumor. A word that Sarah has become familiar with. This year, Sarah was told she had a tumor in her calf. The size and depth were enough for the doctors to warn her that she may not be able to competitively run after removing it. Before the surgery, Sarah took some advice to go for a run in a beautiful place and reflect on her running career. As she ran, she let the feeling of possibly never running again sink in. “Letting that feeling hit you like a Mac truck rather than hiding from it, can actually be a really valuable experience,” says Sarah. Facing difficulty head on is an effective way to grow. Once you have allowed yourself to think through one difficult thing, new fears are easier to overcome. “Being afraid, and letting that fear affect your behavior are two completely different things,” says Sarah. Just a few weeks after surgery, with the bandage from the stitches still intact, Sarah lined up to run the Chicago Marathon. Although typically anxious and nervous prior to a race, this time Sarah only felt grateful. Allowing yourself to think what life would be like without running can be the key to enjoying it more fully. It doesn’t take a catastrophe to know what you are lucky to have. Embracing Adversity After four years of training without a time improvement, Sarah learned how to combat negativity. Many psychologist experts agree that 70 percent of self-talk is negative. When you add in the pain the body goes through as you run, that number increases in an attempt to get you to slow down. Sarah compares this negative self-talk to a radio that is constantly playing in the background. Instead of listening to the radio, she creates her own sounds to listen to—a personal drum kit. “It’s about recognizing the voice and understanding that it doesn’t control you,” Sarah says. “You actually have the ability to consciously choose to listen to [another] sound that your brain is producing.” Become familiar with the fears and negativity that your brain naturally produces. Once you realize you can control them, their existence alone won’t have any power over you. In fact, you can even use them to your advantage. When the negativity radio comes on, let it be a que to start pounding on your air drums. Preparation: Negativity’s Worst Nightmare What about when the negativity is coming from outside sources? Even when you have mastered the self-talk dilemma, other people’s talk may bring you down. Prior to the Chicago Marathon there was a lot of talk about which American was going to come in first. Although Sarah had been a top-ten American in several recent races, she was not invited to the prerace press conference. She also overheard other runners talking about their lofty goals and the records they wanted to beat. Hearing all that noise could’ve made anyone feel down. Instead, Sarah kept reminding herself, “Well, they still have to run the race.” She had run 4 previous Chicago Marathon’s and knew that her experience was going to mean a lot. Knowing this particular course, the times to push it and the places the crowd will pick you up, was crucial for Sarah. Her preparation, and her confidence in that preparation, made all the difference as she ran across the finish line as the first American. The “unexpected” first made it that much sweeter. For the Love of Running After four years, Sarah did PR again. However, she hardly uses a watch now. Her lifelong marathon goal is still to come in sub 2:30, but she admits that probably isn’t likely to happen until she stops focusing on the numbers. Luckily, she has an incredible amount of love for running. She will run as fast as she can, for as long as she can. The takeaways? Run fast and run your pace. Don’t let a clock control you. Prepare. Face your fears and negative thoughts head on. LOVE running. Play your own drums. Be grateful. Celebrate your victories, and then let your hunger to improve start up once again. We chit chat about our week and our kids’ Summer Camps as school is about to start. And Sarah has turned 55, with an 18-year old son now - a big birthday week for her family. We chat about Menopause fashion - and a thing called MenoCore, which is based on something called NormCore, and resembles the wardrobe from the movie Annie Hall. It says COMFORT to us, so we’re all about that. Although Sarah has wanted to dress like a GrownUp lately, and then we discuss our personal styles. Bible Study - Chapter 2 from the Wisdom of Menopause “The brain catches fire” and it was not as much about the brain as we thought it would be. The crux of the chapter is that the changes that happen in Menopause are as big as the changes that happened in puberty. Which is fascinating and hilarious as we think about what we were like at 11 or 12… We wonder - is happiness really your choice? Or do our circumstances really define our attitude? The chapter talks about attitude being very important to how you get through menopause and beyond. And we talk about our own dispositions - Julia has a sunny outlook and Sarah has some fears she feels may have held her back from some things… Comparing our suffering/issues to others’ just keep us stuck in our intellect, rather than staying in the emotions. Sarah wonders about the line between feeling your feelings and wallowing in them… And discussion of how to handle anger. Plus the chapter mentions Chakras, so we discuss a bit of what we know about the symbolism of the Chakras. Sarah signed up for the Northrup newsletter How Hot was your Flash? Julia had one during the night - or at least she’s 90% sure she had one… but woke up super hot. But Sarah didn’t really have one this week.

Discovering Darwin
Geographical Distribution: Chapter XII-XIII

Discovering Darwin

In this episode we gather our liquid strength and courage to work our way through two chapters of Origin of Species, Chapter XII - Geographical Distribution and Chapter XIII - Geographical Distribution continued.  Although Sarah predicted the podcast would last 3 hours we luckily were able to restrain ourselves to 1 hour and 28 minutes. We do have two corrections to make-#1  Although Josh declared that Noah's Ark came to rest on the top of Mt. Sinai the general view is that it actually settled on Mt. Ararat.#2 James mentioned the relationship between flightless birds (ratites) and the breakup of paleocontinent of Pangea when he should have said Gondwanaland instead.Chapter XII-XII These two chapters have been present in OoS since the first edition and it is in these chapters that Darwin defends his model against the prevailing view of the time - special creation. To make his argument Darwin uses modern distribution patterns of plants and animals on continents and islands, the success of introduced species to new habitats, experiments he conducted at Down House and data he collected from citizen scientists. Geographical Distribution  There is hardly a climate or condition in the Old World which cannot be paralleled in the New—at least as closely as the same species generally require....Notwithstanding this general parallelism in the conditions of the Old and New Worlds, how widely different are their living productions!Sarah discussed the idea of the monkeys from Africa (Old World Monkeys) are quite different from the monkeys found in South America (New World). In Madagascar are found the prosimians "almost monkeys" like lemurs, aye-aye, and sifakas.By Joseph Meyer - MKL online at Retro Bibliothek, work 149, 2009, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2598452On the continent of Africa are a large diversity of primates that range from leaf-eating species like the colobus monkeys to the generalist species like the vervet monkeys and baboons.  In addition gorillas and chimps which are tail-less apes are also in Africa (we realize that these are not monkeys but they needed to be mentioned none-the-less).www.discovery.comThe New World monkeys are quite different in form, long limbed with many species having a prehensile tail which they can use as a 5th limb.http://www.wildernessclassroom.com/students/archives/2005/03/spider-monkey.htmlJosh talked about the rich diversity of marsupial mammals found in Australia, the most striking is(was) the Tasmanian Wolf, a marsupial carnivore that looks like a dog but it is more closely related to a kangeroo! Here is a haunting silent 1936 film of the last known living Tasmanian wolf filmed in captivity. James discussed Darwin's interest in the flightless birds like the ostrich, cassowary, rhea, emu, tinamou and kiwi and Josh reminded us of the extinct Moa. This picture shows the relative sizes of the kiwi, ostrich and moa with the eggs. Notice how large the egg of the Kiwi is relative to its body size. It is the largest egg per body size while the ostrich egg is one of the smallest relative to the body size!Until recently the prevailing view of flightless bird evolution was that the early flightless bird evolved before the continent of Gondwana broke up into the separate continents and then each lineage of flightless bird evolved on their prospective continents - Rheas in South America, ostrich in Africa, Emu in Australia and Kiwi and Cassowary in New Zealand. Recent molecular evidence has challenged that view and actually argues that "flightlessness" evolved independently three times. We discussed the various experiments Darwin conducted with seed dispersal in salt water or in the guts of birds and fish as well as insects and seeds being dispersed on the feet of duck, swans and other semi-aquatic birds. James was reminded of a childhood story in a Dr. Dolittle book, Doctor Dolittle's Garden in which a beetle recounts being brought to England on the foot of a duck.http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0603431h.html#d5_THE_WATER_BEETLESarah brought up the idea of endemics, and how unique species with limited geographic distributions are often found on islands or high elevation habitats which supports Darwin's model of isolation and speciation. Sarah used the Silversword as an example, a beautiful plant that is found only on the high elevations of Halaekala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. James exposed the beauty and elegance of the plant so here is a picture he took last May 2015.Flowering silversword - photo by James WagnerThe opening and closing theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C.
