Matt Schofield, Josh Smith, and Jeff McErlain talk about their Two-Rock Amplifiers, give tone tips, and perform. For more TrueFire Live sessions, check out https://truefire.com/liveAbout Matt:Though he holds a British passport and is an inductee of the British Blues Hall of Fame, Matt Schofield has been making his mark globally as one of the top players in the new class of six string wunderkinds. The Los Angeles Daily News wrote, In Schofield, the UK has produced the best Blues guitarist from any country in decades head and shoulders above the herd, while Guitar & Bass Magazine rated him in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time ranking him with icons Eric Clapton and Peter Green.Born in the industrial city of Manchester and raised amongst the rolling hills and locked in time Cotswolds, Schofield began playing guitar at the age of 12.My dad relocated to America, but before he left he gave me a BB King video. I watched it before school every day; it was three or four tracks from a concert. Later, when I was in California with my father, he showed me BB King with Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan on video. It was like; Ive got to do this. Theres something about the way the three of them were jamming. B.B. really was majestic. As an 11-or 12-year-old watching him, I was mesmerized but didnt think there was any way I could ever do that. It was too special. But when I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan playing with him, I thought maybe I could. Stevie made it seem accessible to people. I taught myself, working my way through my Dads great blues record collection. I did my first gig age 13, and Ive been doing it ever since. At age 18 he left the countryside and moved to London. There, as a sideman, he was able to hone his skills as backing a great variety of experienced and well known artists of the British Blues scene, visiting American artists, as well start touring internationally. The introspective, well read (lover of science, history and philosophy) and passionate Schofield said, this enabled me to stay close to my roots while learning my trade and exploring a variety of musical frontiers.By age 25 I was starting to explore my own band projects. Although my formative guitar influences are the largely the old school blues players, I never wanted my own music to be constrained by a rigid formula, or even genre. I just want to play Matt Schofield music. Classic Jazz, funk, soul and rock and all the music I love have all found their way into it. The process of writing and singing has become increasingly important to me, and I feel its those other aspects of creativity that helped define my own voice on the guitar. Its always been important to find a context for the guitar to be part of, so that its not just guitar solos for their own sake.I remain a music lover first and foremost. The recognition Ive received from both fans and peers is humbling and inspiring, and those pinch me moments where I found myself trading licks with heroes like Robben Ford and Buddy Guy are still the biggest thrill. Now after five studio albums and a solid 10 years of touring with my own band, I have definite broader concepts I want to explore. Remaining open to where the music might take me while maintaining the excitement that improvising and collaborating with talented musicians allow, is key to me. My inspiration and goals came from many places: My influences old and new, including musicians I have wanted to collaborate with for years. Things I still feel I hadn't fully realized on previous studio records, and a need to keep pushing myself. It all meets at the place where Im heading now. Im always aiming to go as far as possible to capturing the same connection with the listener that I aim to make at a live show or on record. Thats the goal. Capturing that special moment."About Josh:Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Before he was 1, his family relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. At age 3, he received his first guitar and at 6, he started taking guitar lessons.Josh was exposed to the blues at an early age. He listened to a variety of artists, such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and T-Bone Walker. He also started going to concerts, including the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.By 12, Josh was playing at established professional blues jams in South Florida, such as Musicians Exchange Café in Fort Lauderdale and Club M in Hollywood, FL.When Josh was 13, the Rhino Cats, house band at Club M, asked him to be the lead guitarist. Musicians Exchange owner Don Cohen was so taken aback by the talent of this young musician that he offered to help manage and develop Josh’s career. The Café was renowned for bringing in the best national touring blues bands, and Josh was quick to learn how to approach these blues greats, many of whom would invite Josh to sit in with them, thinking it may be a “novelty” to have a 14-year-old kid playing the blues. The novelty quickly wore off and was replaced by musicians stopping, watching and listening as this “kid” wailed out blues licks better than many of the touring guitarists on the circuit. Josh began sitting in with such greats as Jimmy Thackery, Tinsley Ellis, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Double Trouble, Joanna Connor and Kim Simmonds, among others. Jimmy Thackery said of the 14-year-old, “Josh is three heartbreaks away from being a true blues guitar genius.” At 14, Josh released his first CD, Born Under a Blue Sign , and at 15, he released his second CD, Woodsheddin. While performing all over South Florida, Josh Smith and the Rhino Cats quickly became one of the most in-demand blues bands in the area. In 1994, while Josh was only 15, they received the Florida Jammy Award for best blues band and were selected as XS Readers Choice Winners in 1995 for best blues band. In 1996, then a senior in high school, Josh was put on the cover of the national magazine High School Senior , which hailed him as an “Up and Coming Guitar Legend.” That same year, Washburn Guitars Int’l recognized Josh’s talent and offered him an endorsement. They flew Josh to Chicago and guitar luthier Grover Jackson built him a custom guitar.Although Josh was an honor student, after graduation from high school in June 1997, Josh followed his heart and began pursuing what he was best at. His first national tour ensued with his newly formed power trio, Josh Smith and the Frost. Josh was now the band leader and vocalist, so he not only had to continue developing his guitar chops, but had to concentrate on his vocal prowess. In September 1997, Josh enlisted world-renowned producer Jim Gaines, whose credits include Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Allison, Steve Miller and Jimmy Thackery, to produce his third CD, Too Damn Cold.By 1998, Josh had completed four national tours with his band. In January 1998, Billboard Magazine took note of the rising young talent in a Continental Drift article. In February 1998, Josh was asked to support B.B. King on a number of theatre dates. In March 1998, the TV show Chicago Hope purchased the rights to the tune “32 degrees” from Too Damn Cold . An international CD release, The Mentos Freshmaker Tour , included the title cut, “Too Damn Cold,” in the spring of 1998.Josh toured nationally all of 1999 and in October of that year, he entered the recording studio again with Jim Gaines and produced Woman , his fourth CD. This CD was released and well received in the spring of 2000. Josh continued to tour the East Coast from New York to Florida through 2001 with his band. In June 2002, he married and he and his wife decided to move to Los Angeles. Josh was ready for something new and wanted to be around a variety of musicians. He also began being a sideman.Within a year of moving to L.A., he was retained by Virgin recording artist Ricky Fante. He played nationally and internationally with Ricky for the next two years. In May 2006, Josh recorded his fifth CD, Deep Roots . A more traditional blues CD, his music was once again well received by Blueswax and Blues Revue magazine. Josh continued to play with a variety of artists, such as actress Taryn Manning, Universal hip-hop artist Benny Cassette and Tara Ellis, to name a few. In January 2007, Josh was hired by 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks to be his lead guitarist. They completed two national tours from February-September 2007 with monthly dates and charity events until June 2008 when Taylor started Grease! on Broadway. In July 2008, Josh was hired by Raphael Saadiq. Since that time, Josh has played such high profile gigs with Raphael as backing Mick Jagger at the Grammy Awards in 2011 and the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2011. Josh continues to tour nationally and internationally with Raphael.Josh released his 6th studio CD, “Inception,” in 2009. This is an all-instrumental CD with a variety of genres that was once again well received by the public and critics alike. In 2010, Josh was signed to Crosscut Records, a label based out of Germany. Crosscut re-released Josh’s CD, “Deep Roots,” as “I’m Gonna Be Ready.” In October 2012, Josh’s CD, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released in Germany.Josh continues to live in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children.About Jeff:Jeff McErlain is one of the rare musicians who can teach as well as he plays. This is borne out by Jeff being one of the most in demand guitar instructors as well as performing and recording with Robben Ford.Jeffs unique curriculum and method of teaching is perfect for the player who has been working at the guitar for a while but wants to go to the next level. Jeff has a straight forward and easy rapport with his students, he breaks things down so they can be easily understood, applied, and most importantly, made fun.Music is a language and learning it can be approached in much

On this week's FAB 5 FRIDAYS, I give you 4 of my biggest takeaways and lessons from my conversation with Josh Farr. Formerly an engineer, and with experience in Graduate Recruitment, Josh founded Campus Consultancy to empower young leaders with emotional intelligence & entrepreneurship. Josh has worked with 6036 student leaders (and growing), totalling 20,600+ hours of professional development since March 2017. The programs help Universities increase student engagement; student leaders feel prepared, confident & creative about their role as leaders, and all students benefit from emotionally intelligent, purpose-driven leadership into their careers. Although Josh graduated as an engineer, it wasn't until a facilitator came on-site to talk about mental health that he even realised such a role existed. Become a “facilitator” sparked something inside of him. Josh was always wanting to talk about how peoples day was, how their families were, and he was always intrigued by how we build successful relationships to become better leaders. Josh then went down the rabbit hole of self-development and improvement reading over 100 books in a year. 4 biggest takeaways and lessons: Have a gratitude practice Build your self-awareness Set yourself a goal to read. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

In the late 1990s, Texas Country Music Stalwart, Josh Grider, made his way from Las Cruces, New Mexico to Luckenbach, TX for one of Willie Nelson’s “4th of July Picnics”.  The experience opened his horizons to what was out there for aspiring singers and songwriters beyond what could be heard on nationwide country radio at the time.  Josh mentions seeing some notables for the first time including Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Cory Morrow and others and how it changed his outlook as to what just may be attainable in the music business. Josh initially moved to Waco, TX to attend college at Baylor University where he started his first band, “Riverside”.  After graduation, Josh moved to Austin to focus more on his music and he released his first project in 2005. In 2011, Josh moved to Nashville after earning a publishing deal and began working with producer and fellow Texan, Trent Wilmon.  During this time Josh explains he learned a huge deal about the amount of creativeness that exists in the city of Nashville and just how many hard-working songwriters are cranking out new songs there on a daily basis. Although Josh ended up moving back to Texas where he’s now raising a family, he still commutes to Nashville for meetings and writing appointments because as he states, it IS Music City USA.  Additionally, for those like Josh (and yours truly), if your goal is to eventually have a song picked up and cut by a major artist, working in that town is nearly a must. So, sit back and enjoy this interview with a guy who has one of the smoothest baritone voices in the scene: Josh Grider. https://www.joshgrider.com/ Don’t forget about the upcoming 610 Music Festival.  For more information you can go to: 610 Music Festival on Facebook.  For tickets click HERE! This is Huntin' Land, the podcast for Landowners and land hunters; with How-to's for Habitat Management and Land Investment. If you own, manage or dream of owning land, this is the podcast for you. On this week's show, we're talking with Josh Kinser with Big and J Long Range Attractants.  Although Josh and the company at Big and J sell a full line of deer feed, deer supplements, and deer attractants, we're going to learn some of the how in using deer attractants.  Some of the things we'll cover in today's show: Keeping pressure down while feeding, what do we do to keep pressure down when we're needing to replenish feeding sites again and again. How can we feed without promoting nocturnal feeding habits? Should we hunt directly over feed, hunt the trails leading to feed sites, or is it a combination of all of the above? What’s the right amount of deer attractant to put out? How can you deer feed use in concert with your planted forage to complement it, not take away from it? Can deer attractants have any nutritional value? What's the benefits to deer vs corn? What types of feeders work best for what types of feed? Should we move bait sites constantly or get animals used to one area? Is there anything in deer attractants that attracts more bucks vs does during the huntng season? How can we use deer feed and minimize attracting hogs? We'll determine for ourselves if deer feeding while hunting is right for us and let you decide if it's right for you. If you have any questions or comments just email us at pros@landhuntin.com and thanks for listening, we appreciate your feedback and support.

In this episode of TrueFire Live, we sit down with blues guitarist extraordinaire, Josh Smith, to discuss his guitar masterclass course, Blue Highways. To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Josh Smith: Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Crosscut re-released Josh’s CD, “Deep Roots,” as “I’m Gonna Be Ready.” In October 2012, Josh’s CD, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released in Germany.Josh continues to live in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children.

Josh Scandlen is a Financial Planner and founder of Heritage Wealth Planning a comprehensive financial planning firm located in Georgia. In March of 2018, Josh left USAA after working there for 10 years then worked for a few smaller companies and early this year left being a w-2 employee to start his own financial planning firm and has a successful youtube channel helping people with tax planning, retirement planning, estate planning, and everything finance. He started his financial services career at Vanguard in the late 90's. Although Josh does not manage money any money he still registered as an investment advisor which is an extra cost and can to some be a regulatory hurdle that others would not want to go through. With four kids and his wife at home, how was he going to pay the bills to find the extra money while building up his business? In starting a business you must have money to start up a business and he used a distribution in his 401(k) and paid the 10% penalty. Has always engaged with the public with doing seminars and tried to demystify the financial planning, estate planning experience. He had an epiphany why do seminars in front of 15 locally when he can do youtube videos in front of potentially thousands and now gets a lot of clients directly from doing his youtube channel. Josh says the top three things the people, couples make is not understanding the tax code. He says that investment management is not financial planning. If married filing jointly just don't plan for today but think about the tax bomb in your retirement plan. He says you will not always be married filing jointly. You must think about Medicare premiums tax on social security vs did I beat the market? Not having a durable power of attorney it survives incapacity so a big qualified plan your individual plan and spouse no right to it so if your spouse needs access court order vs durability of power of attorney. Don't focus so much on active investment management use Jack Bogle Vanguard philosophy. Josh recommends a financial planning tool called Maximize My Social Security founder Laurence Kotlikoff Professor of Economics, Boston University and President of Economic Security Planning, Inc. This resource only costs individuals or families $40 bucks per year. Trump's executive order on Required Minimum Distributions for all retirement assets. Increase tables for RMD's at 70 1/2 you are forced to take out an amount divided by 27.4. Maybe what should be done is a redo of these tables so instead push them back to 75 as people are living longer and maybe increase what you divide. Deferring taxes is not eliminating taxes so at some point someone is going to pay it merely kicking the can down the road. Josh has written several books that you should check out:

Josh Bauerle, an Ohio CPA that serves many clients including podcaster John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur On Fire, joined us for this week's episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. “CPA on Fire” Josh started his career by trying several different roles – cost accounting, financial advising, and public accounting – before deciding that developing his own practice was the ideal fit for him. He came from an entrepreneurial family, so although he and his wife had just become the parents of twin boys (!), the risk didn't thwart his determination. He talks a little about the early years, but it was when he started working with John Dumas of Entrepreneur On Fire that his technology clientele seems to have started to grow exponentially. As of the timing of this interview, almost all of his clients have some type of online business – with many being in the e-commerce sales industry. All Remote! One of the more interesting parts of this interview is when Josh gets to talking about the make-up of his current clientele. Due to the nature of how his practice has grown, he doesn't actually serve any local clients. All of his clients live in other cities. Therefore, the majority of their interaction is online via portals or Skype. In fact, even his contracted help is all remote. He has three team members that assist him with servicing his clients, all three of which work remotely. Positioning & branding One of the leading reasons we wanted to interview Josh was for his leading edge view of positioning and branding. Josh has built a unique practice focused on serving clients in a specific industry, and in a specific way. It can be difficult for many entrepreneurial CPAs to differentiate themselves in the market, so I think you will find this discussion with Josh very enlightening. Make sure you listen closely – you may even want to take notes. Although Josh says he isn't particularly tech-savvy, he does list a few tools he uses as well as processes that work well for him in this remote-based practice. I hope you enjoy! See you next week. Although Josh is an admitted fan-boy of Harrison Ford (who is more well known that Baldwin for playing Jack Ryan), he found Baldwin's performance perfect for the character. Dean and Josh both get into the fantastic cast and wonderful editing in this (we are calling it) military thriller. In this episode we gather our liquid strength and courage to work our way through two chapters of Origin of Species, Chapter XII - Geographical Distribution and Chapter XIII - Geographical Distribution continued.  Although Sarah predicted the podcast would last 3 hours we luckily were able to restrain ourselves to 1 hour and 28 minutes. We do have two corrections to make-#1  Although Josh declared that Noah's Ark came to rest on the top of Mt. Sinai the general view is that it actually settled on Mt. Ararat.#2 James mentioned the relationship between flightless birds (ratites) and the breakup of paleocontinent of Pangea when he should have said Gondwanaland instead.Chapter XII-XII These two chapters have been present in OoS since the first edition and it is in these chapters that Darwin defends his model against the prevailing view of the time - special creation. To make his argument Darwin uses modern distribution patterns of plants and animals on continents and islands, the success of introduced species to new habitats, experiments he conducted at Down House and data he collected from citizen scientists. Geographical Distribution  There is hardly a climate or condition in the Old World which cannot be paralleled in the New—at least as closely as the same species generally require....Notwithstanding this general parallelism in the conditions of the Old and New Worlds, how widely different are their living productions!Sarah discussed the idea of the monkeys from Africa (Old World Monkeys) are quite different from the monkeys found in South America (New World). In Madagascar are found the prosimians "almost monkeys" like lemurs, aye-aye, and sifakas.By Joseph Meyer - MKL online at Retro Bibliothek, work 149, 2009, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2598452On the continent of Africa are a large diversity of primates that range from leaf-eating species like the colobus monkeys to the generalist species like the vervet monkeys and baboons.  In addition gorillas and chimps which are tail-less apes are also in Africa (we realize that these are not monkeys but they needed to be mentioned none-the-less).www.discovery.comThe New World monkeys are quite different in form, long limbed with many species having a prehensile tail which they can use as a 5th limb.http://www.wildernessclassroom.com/students/archives/2005/03/spider-monkey.htmlJosh talked about the rich diversity of marsupial mammals found in Australia, the most striking is(was) the Tasmanian Wolf, a marsupial carnivore that looks like a dog but it is more closely related to a kangeroo! Here is a haunting silent 1936 film of the last known living Tasmanian wolf filmed in captivity. James discussed Darwin's interest in the flightless birds like the ostrich, cassowary, rhea, emu, tinamou and kiwi and Josh reminded us of the extinct Moa. This picture shows the relative sizes of the kiwi, ostrich and moa with the eggs. Notice how large the egg of the Kiwi is relative to its body size. It is the largest egg per body size while the ostrich egg is one of the smallest relative to the body size!Until recently the prevailing view of flightless bird evolution was that the early flightless bird evolved before the continent of Gondwana broke up into the separate continents and then each lineage of flightless bird evolved on their prospective continents - Rheas in South America, ostrich in Africa, Emu in Australia and Kiwi and Cassowary in New Zealand. Recent molecular evidence has challenged that view and actually argues that "flightlessness" evolved independently three times. We discussed the various experiments Darwin conducted with seed dispersal in salt water or in the guts of birds and fish as well as insects and seeds being dispersed on the feet of duck, swans and other semi-aquatic birds. James was reminded of a childhood story in a Dr. Dolittle book, Doctor Dolittle's Garden in which a beetle recounts being brought to England on the foot of a duck.http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0603431h.html#d5_THE_WATER_BEETLESarah brought up the idea of endemics, and how unique species with limited geographic distributions are often found on islands or high elevation habitats which supports Darwin's model of isolation and speciation. Sarah used the Silversword as an example, a beautiful plant that is found only on the high elevations of Halaekala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. James exposed the beauty and elegance of the plant so here is a picture he took last May 2015.Flowering silversword - photo by James WagnerThe opening and closing theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C.
