Episode 24. Animal Welfare Round Table: Mythbusters Edition On this episode, we're welcoming back previous guests Annie Pruitt, Kaitlyn Thomas and Liz Weiner. Between the 4 of us, we have nearly 30 years combined experience in animal sheltering and community pet support. Special thanks to Chuck Nunn, audio engineer for the Round Table - who also joins in the conversation when we put him on the spot. On this Round Table, we're confronting 4 myths that we see on social media and in our personal experience: Myth #1: Heartless people dump animals at shelters. Myth #2: If you can't afford a pet, you shouldn't have one. Myth #3: Dogs with scars and injuries were used as “bait dogs.” Myth #4: Pets end up at animal shelters because they were abused, have behavioral issues or are otherwise flawed in some way. Annie, Kaitlyn, Liz & I talk through each of these statements and share the truths we've learned through our volunteer, work and life experiences. Some of the topics we discuss: How we used to believe some of these but our experiences changed our minds – and we're thrilled that we used to be wrong; How negative and judgmental comments on social media can create a dangerous situation for pets; Why we need to change the conversation from focusing on our opinions about the problem to focusing on solutions; Challenges faced by pet owners living at or below poverty level; How we can't jump to conclusions or make assumptions about what goes on in a family; How imparting our own judgments on situations is the root cause of most conflicts and unhappiness; The power of making human connections; The importance of collaborating; Being responsible with social media consumption; and Compassion fatigue and burnout in the animal welfare community and the best way our panelists have found to reverse it. In this episode I have the pleasure of talking to the incredible Resmaa Menakem, a Healer, best-selling author, and trauma specialist. Resmaa helps people, communities, and organisations find strength in healing historical and racialised trauma – carried in the body and the soul – that is holistic and resilient. He is a cultural trauma navigator and helps people rise through the suffering's edge. He is a communal provocateur and coach, a Senior Fellow with The Meadows Institute and considers it his job in this moment to make the invisible visible. I have the pleasure of hearing more about Resmaa's journey from social work to healing historical and racialised trauma. We talk about the beautiful inspiration behind the name of his book, My Grandmother's Hands. We also talk about the concept of 'white body supremacy'. The immaturity of white body supremacy and the barrier it creates anti-racism and healing. An old saying in Marketing is “don’t talk about features, talk about benefits.” And while many of us nod our heads in agreement, the truth is that you need to understand both, and many business owners and marketers don’t know how to get started and put that advice into action to build a strong brand. Today on the Real Food Brands Marketing Podcast, host and Food & Bev Brand Strategist Katie Mleziva explains the difference between features and benefits and walks you through two exercises to use this concept to create a brand that will resonate with consumers. In This Episode: The difference between product features and consumer benefits. What questions to ask to help you differentiate between the two and why both are important to identify. Why emotional benefits are so important when trying to stand out and connect with consumers. How to make choosing your brand easy. The different types of benefits presented in the Bain Elements of Value Pyramid. How to use the Consumer Benefits Ladder to shape your brand messaging. For some time I have been wanting to talk about the pastor and his money. One of the stresses in ministry is the pastor’s need for security which can add to the tensions in his life. The Irish lad is no stranger to the music world with his impressive history with music bands, radio, and the industry in general. But of course because they are a great band and from Ireland he ended up picking a U2 song. The song "Beautiful Day" reminds him of his love that left this Earth too soon. Rather than feel sorry for himself, Pearse hears this song and reminisces about their time together and cherishes his memories of listening to this song on the way to their beach adventures! 6:48 "Music is medicine for modern living" -Pearse 8:05 "Beautiful Day": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co6WMzDOh1o Current Favorite is "One Last Cigarette": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkLAzVwn2wY(And "Daphne Blue" by the same band) 9:04 "Don't get Notions" -How the Irish warn you not to get too proud Pearse's Social: @PearseMcCarthy Insta: @4playmusicpodcast Twitter : @podcastfourplay Facebook: @4PlayMusicPodcast Pearse's Podcast Ep. 14: https://open.spotify.com/episode/29M9BWDyJg5anS5AtBiJVt?si=5kWP1G57R0CDu4gA3nBdqA Start Your Canva Design Here: https://www.canva.com/join/valuable-pastel-dolomite Leave A Message about any episode at www.virtuallyyouva.com Gonna stalk me on social? I’m going to admit. This was a hard topic for me. I try to spend so much of my time trying to help you shift your attitude and perspective around food, thinking in terms of abundance and what you can eat MORE of, rather than restricting yourself and trying to eat less. But the fact remains - there are certain foods that you really should be eating less. And when you do, everything changes and your body starts to feel amazing. Let’s navigate these tricky waters together and learn which foods should show up less and less on your plate. Here’s a hint: they have to do with carbs, fats and processing. If you’re already eating slowly, mindfully and have mastered the art of eating PRO’s yet you’re still struggling to see results, this episode will help!
