Ashif moved to Canada in 1987 and his parents instilled in him the idea that one can have anything they want in life, but to get there you must work and pay for it. Ashif has directly invested in over 100 companies globally, is invested in over 10 funds, and serves as a venture partner with Rising Tide, a VC firm in Silicon Valley. Ashif has built and exited several companies in the tech space. What Ashif has recognized in every country where he has interests is that the same problems of poverty, homelessness and addictions exist. His perception is that new solutions to the same problems need entrepreneurships and innovation, and this is the catalyst behind the formation of his starting the Scale Good Fund.  In our conversation, we discuss:  In the social impact fund, financial returns are expected, but the hope is for real social impact. Who is Ashif Mawji? Ashif is a serial entrepreneur who strives for efficiency in everything he is involved with. He's a venture partner with Rising Tide, a venture capital firm investing primarily in the information technology and healthcare life sciences markets. He sits on the boards of the Telus Friendly Future Foundation, Invest Alberta, the Edmonton Police Service Foundation, Hockey Canada Foundation, and the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, among many others. From a start selling watches in a Kenyan marketplace as a boy, to building and selling a wildly successful software company in North America, Ashif Mawji has experienced a lifetime of ups and downs in the business world.Ashif's entrepreneurial journey started early in life as he brokered a partnership with a local watch shop, allowing him to sell the timepieces on the weekend in a market in Kenya. After a move to Canada, Ashif discovered a love of software, tied with a talent for recognizing opportunity. Ashif Mawji is a wildly successful tech entrepreneur and graduate of NAIT’s Computer Systems Technology Program. Even though they didn’t have much, every Friday, his family would hand out Kenyan shillings to homeless people at the Mosque. Once, his best friend at school invited him for lunch. His friend’s mother took a bit of bread and after adding some water to the milk, shared her children’s food with Ashif so everyone could eat. This was a powerful experience for Ashif and is the living example of his motto, “No matter what your circumstances, you can always be generous.”Groups you were born into:Ashif grew up in a family with a strong sense of entrepreneurship. His parents told him “You can have anything you want, you just have to find a way to pay for it!” This taught him early on to find ways to make money. Groups you chose to belong to:The Henry Crown Fellowship taught Ashif to ask the question, “Just because you can, should you?” and focusing on values and being true to your word. Ashif used to race motorcycles as a team and learned to ‘take one for the team’ to help the other team members build their capacity. In business, he translates this to ‘leading from behind’. Temperament and personality influencesAshif has a ‘Type A’ personality. It helps him take action and make decisions, but he sometimes rushes with decisions and makes more mistakes as a result. He also describes himself as impatient. A time I became aware that my way of doing things was cultural and specific to my cultural experience One time, there was a homeless person who fell in the street, and without thinking, Ashif picked him up and helped him. He then realized that everyone else was just standing around wondering if they should do something.
