AI can already book your hotel and order your food. Now it's coming for your ride. In China, platforms are turning ride-hailing into a single sentence. You say what you need, like a smooth trip, a stop along the way, or a car that fits a child or a pet, and AI handles the rest. On the show: Steve, Yushun & Yushan.

Portland city councilors are discussing a proposal that would raise take-home pay for Uber and Lyft drivers by limiting how much money the companies can take from each trip. Councilors are considering a limit of 20% for the portion that Uber and Lyft can take from a driver. Currently, the amount isn’t fixed, and can sometimes be over40%. Uber and Lyft have threatened to leave Portland over the proposal. Uber claims it would force the company to raise its rates or operate at a loss for most rides. The Portland Metro Chamber and the “We Play for Portland” Coalition, which includes the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oregon Symphony, Portland Art Museum and other Portland sports and arts organizations are opposed to the city council's draft proposal. The groups warned city council in a letter they released that if rideshare companies decrease their services or leave Portland, it could greatly affect audience turnout at Portland events. We hear from Councilor Elana Pirtle-Guinea, as well as Jon Isaacs, the Executive Vice President of Public Affairs for the Portland Metro Chamber of Commerce, about the draft proposal and what it could mean for the future of rideshare services in Portland.
Uber Technologies has expressed a commitment to dialogue after a three-day strike by app-based drivers disrupted ride-hailing services in Lagos and parts of Ogun State between March 16 and March 18, 2026.Organized by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), the industrial action saw thousands of drivers log off platforms like Uber, Bolt, inDrive, and Lagride to protest unsustainable earnings and harsh working conditions. The union cited a disconnect between stagnant ride fares and the rapidly rising cost of living in Nigeria. They want Immediate adjustment of fares to reflect skyrocketing fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, and high inflation. The union demand for Reducition of the platform commission from the current 20% to 10% to ensure sustainable driver income. They also ask for improved rider verification, functional emergency panic buttons, and comprehensive insurance coverage for health, accidents, and life. A regulated minimum base fare and better policies regarding arbitrary driver account deactivations. While the strike significantly reduced ride availability and caused surge pricing for commuters, the companies have responded by emphasizing the need for balance:Commitment to Talks: Uber reaffirmed its readiness to hold roundtable discussions with drivers, stating they are the "heart of the business".Economic Claims: Uber noted that drivers earn an estimated N6.1 billion annually via its platform, but acknowledged that maintaining a marketplace that works for both riders and drivers is a "fundamental principle".Market Pressure: Operators have expressed concerns that drastically raising fares may reduce rider demand, further impacting overall driver earnings. The union has indicated it will review the companies' and government's responses following the three-day shutdown to determine if further industrial action is necessary.

Ride-hailing was once seen as the convenient — and sometimes cheaper — alternative to taxis. But many commuters in Singapore start to feel that a private-hire ride is more expensive lately. Several ride-hailing platforms have raised their platform fees, and depending on the time of day, the difference between apps can be quite significant. Cruise's trouble-ridden robotaxis are joining Uber's ride-hailing service next year as part of a multiyear partnership bringing together two companies that were once poised to compete for passengers. The alliance is the latest change in direction for Cruise since its California license to provide driverless rides was suspended in October 2023 after one of its robotaxis dragged a jaywalking pedestrian who had been struck by a human-driven vehicle across a darkened San Francisco street. The incident spurred regulatory inquiries into Cruise and prompted its corporate parent, automaker General Motors (GM), to tamp down its once audacious ambitions in autonomous driving. GM had envisioned Cruise generating $1 billion in annual revenue by 2025 as its robotaxis steadily expanded beyond San Francisco and into other cities to offer a driverless alternative to the ride-hailing services operated by Uber and Lyft. But now GM and Cruise are looking to make money by mixing the robotaxis with Uber's human-driven cars, giving passengers the option to ask for an autonomous ride if they want. The financial details of the partnership weren't disclosed, nor were the cities in which Uber intends to offer Cruise's robotaxis next year. Unless something changes, California won't be in the mix of options because Cruise's license remains suspended in the state. Meanwhile, a robotaxi fleet operated by Google spinoff Waymo is expanding beyond San Francisco into cities around the Bay Area and Southern California. Waymo announced its robotaxis are completing more than 100,000 paid rides per week—a number that includes its operations in Phoenix, where it has been operating for several years. Cruise is currently operating Chevy Bolts autonomously in Phoenix and Dallas, with humans sitting behind the wheel ready to take over if something goes wrong. The Uber deal underscores Cruise's determination to get back to the point where its robotaxis navigate the roads entirely on their own. “Cruise is on a mission to leverage driverless technology to create safer streets and redefine urban life,” said Cruise CEO Marc Whitten, who is filling a void created after Cruise founder Kyle Vogt stepped down in the fallout from the California license suspension. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
