“I like to think about ESG not only as a risk management tool, but also as an opportunity. I think the, the flip side of risk is opportunity. So if we think that a diverse team is what will bring more innovation, more ideas, more, let's say different ways of looking at needs and products, then this is an opportunity….What about if we think about the way that people consume, what is the carbon footprint that we have?.... And how do you reduce it? Or maybe build technology that helps reduce your impact on the planet, or helps you reduce the amount of AI or cloud usage that you use? So I, I think that looking at ESG as a risk and, and as an opportunity tool is actually very good.” Cecile Blilious on Electric Ladies Podcast In 2025 so far, 2.3% of venture capital funding went to companies founded by women, 2.3%. So that means 97.7% of the funding went to men. The percents have been in the same range for decades. Seriously. Think of all the innovations that are not getting funded due to this ridiculous bias. What can we do about it? Listen to Cecile Blilious of Venture ESG and European Women in VC explain new financing models that could work to fund more innovative businesses, especially those founded by women – in this enlightening conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: ● What venture capital really is and how it works. How male and female VCs differ. ● Insights into ESG investing that address both the risks and the opportunities – reframing both ● New financing models we need and that they might look like. ● Plus, career advice, such as: “I think being clear about your values is very important. Where would you work and where wouldn't you?... Let's focus on one or two that are the most important things that are like showstoppers... Then in mid-career, what I see happen many times with women is that women don't apply to jobs…but if you don't apply, you're not even considered. So my advice would be, look at the next job that you'd like to have in your career path, and if you think that you're 50% qualified for it, apply because you are grow into the role” Cecile Blilious on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. Listen in as Nick is joined by Darren Clifford, the Founder of Adapt [us] Capital, a new venture capital fund and venture builder focused on investing and building companies at the intersection of climate adaptation and scalable, profitable businesses. In this episode, Nick and Darren discuss how the climate change, climate investment, and climate mitigation “moment” in 2025 requires new conversations, narratives, and solutions, including more focus on and concerted capital allocation to promoting adaptation-focused efforts alongside other mitigation strategies and innovation. Nick and Darren also explore: Demand Adaptation vs. Resilience Adaptation: Drawing distinctions between "demand adaptation" (businesses and technologies that profitably fulfill emerging needs in a warming world, like air conditioning, cold supply chains, and climate-resilient vacation options) and "resilience adaptation" (efforts to avert loss, price risk, and enhance society's coping mechanisms).Getting creative on narrative reframes: Darren and Nick reframe prevailing climate narratives, such as "net zero," advocating instead for optimizing humanity's overall quality of life and letting go of concepts and targets that no longer serve. They also discuss the need to balance environmental priorities with social connectivity, economic opportunity, resilient infrastructure, and many other components that ladder up to well-being, recognizing that trade-offs between maximum sustainability and human quality of life are often unavoidable, if not necessary.Venture capital's role in scaling adaptation: Nick prompts Darren to answer the “why venture” question, particularly with respect to how venture capital can support a more focused approach to, resource allocation for, and successful scaling of adaptation-focused businesses. This conversation also explores business model innovation, anticipated market sizes for climate adaptation solutions, and the evolving nature of deal flow in the digital and AI-powered world.… and much more.Timestamps:00:01:37 - Introductions00:05:41 – Distinguishing between demand adaptation and resilience adaptation00:09:25 – Reframing outdated climate narratives like net zero00:15:02 - Sustainability and human quality of life: intersections and trade offs00:26:03 - Fund launch and investment strategy00:28:12 - Market opportunities in demand-driven adaptation00:36:05 - The future of demand-driven adaptationLearn more about Darren's work and keep up to date with Adapt [us] Capital on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adapt-us-capital/+ https://www.linkedin.com/in/djclif/If you love listening to The Keep Cool Show, please leave a 5-star review on Rate My Podcast: https://ratethispodcast.com/keepcoolThank you so much.Plus, you can stay up-to-date on all things Keep Cool here: https://subscribe.keepcool.co/ and follow Nick on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholasvanosdol/

Remote work is driving a significant startup boom, reshaping the IT services market. A recent study indicates that companies with higher levels of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic have seen a notable increase in employee startups, with an estimated 11.6% of new business formations attributed to this trend. Despite major corporations reinstating return-to-office mandates, remote work adoption in the U.S. has risen from 19.9% in late 2022 to 23.6% in early 2025, highlighting a growing demand for tools and services that support distributed teams. This shift presents both opportunities and challenges for employers, as they risk losing key talent to new ventures while also facing higher employee attrition rates. The insurance industry is beginning to address the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) by offering new products to cover potential losses from AI-related errors. Lloyds of London has introduced a policy that protects businesses from legal claims arising from malfunctioning AI systems, reflecting a growing recognition of AI as an operational risk. This development raises important questions about accountability and liability when AI systems fail, as seen in recent incidents involving customer service chatbots. As insurers start to underwrite AI risks, companies must adapt their service level agreements and governance structures to meet new requirements. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has announced a significant change in how it shares information, focusing on urgent alerts related to emerging threats while reducing routine updates. This shift, coupled with budget cuts that could reduce CISA's funding by 17%, raises concerns about the agency's capacity to respond to increasing cyber threats. IT services firms and cybersecurity vendors must adapt to this new landscape, as the responsibility for threat detection and response shifts more towards the private sector. Organizations that previously relied on CISA for support may find themselves facing increased operational risks due to reduced visibility and slower response times. In a related development, Microsoft has extended support for its Office applications on Windows 10 until October 2028, allowing users more time to transition to Windows 11. This decision reflects a broader trend in the technology sector, where companies are adapting their support strategies to meet user needs. By decoupling the upgrade cycles for Windows and Office, Microsoft acknowledges the resistance to forced upgrades and the importance of maintaining enterprise customer relationships. This extension provides IT service providers with additional time for operational planning while emphasizing the ongoing need for modernization in the long term.
