Stāsta muzikoloģe, Rakstniecības un Mūzikas muzeja mākslas eksperte Inese Žune. Vai zini, ka pēdējos mūža gados vijoļmeistars Nikolajs Dreika (1904-1998) savas vijoles vairs nav numurējis, bet devis tām pazīstamu sieviešu vārdus? Nikolajs Dreika ir viens no ievērojamākajiem 20. gadsimta latviešu vijoļbūves meistariem. Skaņu pasaule viņam bijusi tuva jau no bērnības, kad viņš apguvis cītaras un vijoles spēli un visai veikli muzicējis ballēs, kāzās un citās svinībās. Sapnis par koncertējoša vijolnieka karjeru gan nav piepildījies, jo reiz slēpojot viņš nelaimīgi kritis un salauzis kreiso roku. Tomēr vijolei Nikolajs Dreika palicis uzticīgs visu mūžu. 26 gadu vecumā, strādājot par mācekli pie vijoļmeistara Jāņa Barabančika, jauneklis atklājis šī amata vilinājumu un jau pēc četriem gadiem patstāvīgi uzbūvējis savu pirmo vijoli. Drīz vien Nikolajs Dreika atvēris savu vijoļdarbnīcu Aleksandra Čaka ielā, bet padomju laikā tā nacionalizēta. No 1946. līdz 1964. gadam viņš bijis vijoļmeistars Latvijas Valsts Filharmonijā, bet pēc aiziešanas pensijā strādājis savā dzīvoklī Ģertrūdes ielā, kur izveidojis nelielu darbnīcu. Meistars daudz nodarbojies gan ar instrumentu un lociņu remontu, gan restaurāciju, un savā raženajā mūžā uzbūvējis vairāk nekā 150 vijoles. Katra no tām ir īpaša un atšķiras gan ar skanējuma nokrāsu, gan koksnes ornamentu un lakojumu. Dreika daudz pētījis vāku izliekuma ietekmi uz skanējumu un eksperimentējis ar to skaņošanu. Neatlaidīgā darbā viņš izstrādājis savu vijoles modeli, kas tuvāks vācu vijoļbūves skolas tradīcijām. Meistars teicis, ka "vijole jāizauklē siltās rokās kā bērns, tad koka dvēsele sāk dziedāt". Vijole bijusi visa viņa dzīve, katru reizi no jauna viņš pārdzīvojis tās tapšanas vai atjaunošanās brīnumu. Meistaram bijusi ļoti romantiska dvēsele, viņš mīlējis ceļot, aizrāvies ar fotografēšanu un dzeju un arī pats sacerējis kuplejas. Mūža otrajā pusē N. Dreika savas vijoles vairs nav numurējis, bet devis to būtībai un raksturam atbilstošus vārdus: "Vija", "Venēra" , "Glorija". Dažreiz nosaukumu priekšā pateikusi jau pati vijole, kā piemēram, vijole "Sirsniņa" ar sidrabainu skaņu. Tās koka šķiedras zīmējums uz apakšējā vāka veidojis sirds formu. Meitai Astrīdai Tabūnei meistars veltījis vijoli "Astrīda". Grāmatā "Bet vijole skanēs mūžam" viņa rakstījusi: "Jutu tēva dvēseli, to lielo mīlestību, ar kādu viņš aplūko katru savu vijoli, savu gara bērnu, kuru veidojis, izjūtot radīšanas prieku." Par viņas vārdā nosaukto vijoli Astrīda Tabūne teikusi, ka tā bijusi tembrāli bagāta un skanējusi kā ērģeles. Vijole "Marita" savukārt tapusi kā skanoša kāzu dāvana mazmeitai. To viņas lielajā dienā pirmo reizi ieskandinājis vijolnieks Eduards Bulavinovs (Vaholders) un visi klātesošie apbrīnojuši tās gaišo un dzidro skaņu. Sava tēva brāļa mazmazmeitai, dzejniecei un rakstniecei Dagnijai Dreikai meistars veltījis savu pēdējo, 1986. gadā būvēto vijoli "Dagnija". Tā nonākusi Rakstniecības un mūzikas muzeja mūzikas instrumentu kolekcijā Pārējās Nikolaja Dreikas būvētās vijoles ir aizgājušas tautās un turpina savu skanīgo dzīvi ne tikai Latvijā, bet arī ārpus dzimtenes robežām līdz pat Japānai.

C., Leskovec, J., Losonczy, A., Deisseroth, K., Soltesz, I. Abstract: Sixty-five million people suffer from epilepsy and associated cognitive decline worldwide. Therefore, there is urgent need to identify novel mechanisms involved in epileptic network instability. Densely connected 'hub' neurons have been implicated as key controllers of developmental as well as epileptic circuits. While such hub cells are traditionally defined by connection count, how these connections contribute to interictal dynamics is not understood. We performed whole-brain single-cell calcium imaging of the larval zebrafish brain in an acute seizure model. Biologically constrained modeling of cell-cell effective interactions successfully reproduced experimental calcium dynamics and enabled hub identification. Simulated perturbation of single hub neurons in the preseizure state confirmed that such traditional hub cells can exert major influence over global dynamics. Novel higher-order graph analytics revealed that the sensitivity to perturbation is not simply linked to outgoing degrees but rather to overexpression of feedforward motifs surrounding the hub cells that enhance downstream excitation. Model- and species similarity of the key findings was supported by similar results from the hippocampus of chronically epileptic mice. Collectively, these data identify a specific class of high-order hub neuron that is richly involved in feedforward motifs as an attractive new target for seizure control. Abstract: The translin/trax microRNA-degrading enzyme mediates activity-induced changes in translation that underlie several long-lasting forms of cellular plasticity. As translin and trax are expressed in dopaminergic and striatal neurons, we investigated whether deletion of Tsn blocks amphetamine sensitization, a long-lasting, translation-dependent form of behavioral plasticity. Although we had hypothesized that constitutive Tsn deletion would impair amphetamine sensitization, we found, instead, that it enhances the hyperlocomotion produced by the initial dose of amphetamine. Since these mice display elevated adiposity, which alters pharmacokinetics of many drugs, we measured brain levels of amphetamine in Tsn knockout mice and found that these are elevated. As conditional Tsn deletion in adulthood does not impact adiposity, we monitored the locomotor response to amphetamine following this manipulation. Acute and sensitized responses to amphetamine are not altered in these mice, indicating that the enhanced amphetamine response displayed by constitutive Tsn knockout mice is due to Tsn absence during development. Abstract: Activity-dependent local protein synthesis is critical for synapse-specific, persistent plasticity. Abnormalities in local protein synthesis have been implicated in psychiatric disorders. We have recently identified the translin/trax microRNA-degrading enzyme as a novel mediator of protein synthesis at activated synapses. Additionally, mice lacking translin/trax exhibit some of the behavioral abnormalities found in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome. Therefore, identifying signaling pathways interacting with translin/trax to support persistent synaptic plasticity is a translationally relevant goal. Here, as a first step to achieve this goal, we have assessed the requirement of translin/trax for multiple hippocampal synaptic plasticity paradigms that rely on distinct molecular mechanisms. We found that mice lacking translin/trax exhibited selective impairment in a form of persistent hippocampal plasticity, which requires postsynaptic PKA activity. In contrast, enduring forms of plasticity that are dependent on presynaptic PKA were unaffected. Furthermore, these mice did not display exaggerated metabotropic glutamate receptor-mediated long-term synaptic depression, a hallmark of the mouse model of fragile X syndrome. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that translin/trax mediates long-term synaptic plasticity that is dependent on postsynaptic PKA signaling. Copy rights belong to original authors.
