The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Comedy legend Milton Berle's SNL hosting gig has gone down as one of the most infamous - and disastrous - events in late-night television history. In this episode of Saturday Night Live - widely considered one of the worst of all time (not just of the original era) - “Mr. Television” brings his 1950s showmanship, sensibility, and bravado to the comedy landscape of the late 1970s. And the results are… A-mazing!From the opening monologue (cringeworthy in any era), Berle's constant adlibbing, camera-mugging, and pre-planned "spontaneous" moments derail the show, creating palpable tension that resonates through every painful bit. Behind the scenes, Berle's legendary ego only amplified the problems. Luckily, there are a few sketches that do NOT include the host, and they work quite well (for the most part). And, although only given one number, Ornette Coleman delivers as musical guest. As with all “train wrecks” from this era, we bring in The SNL in Review's Andy Hoglund to pontificate on all that went wrong with this outing, what few bright spots there might be, and to help get to the bottom of who is to blame for this fiasco. Is this one really as bad as history (and Lorne Michaels) would have us believe?---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com
The True Blue Podcast is honoured to share Scam Prevention information with some help from Cst. Berle Zwaan of the Saanich Police. In today's complicated world protecting yourself from those trying to prey on you is vitally important. Berle is now in her 30th year of policing, she has experience in Patrol, Traffic, Mountain Bike Squad, Child Abuse Investigations, Financial Crimes and Community Engagement. It was during her time in the Financial Crimes Unit that she began to see the impact fraud artists can have on the public. In her current job she spends time passing on that knowledge to her community and helping them understand ways to “Beat the Fraudster”. Recently Berle has created a company to do presentations outside of the Saanich jurisdiction. It's called the Outsmart The Scammer Fraud Prevention Society. Feel free to reach out to Berle if you have questions or are looking for her to make a presentation and learn how to protect yourself.Berle ZwaanBerle@OutsmartTheScammer.comhttps://www.OutsmartTheScammer.comhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573233827122https://www.linkedin.com/in/berle-zwaan-bsc-86104732/Sound editing done by Todd Mason.More about the Victoria City Police Union (VCPU): - Tweet us at https://twitter.com/VicPD_Union - Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/vicpd_union/ - Find us on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/truebluevictoria/ - Visit our website for information at https://truebluevic.ca/ - Email us at media@vcpu.ca for any media inquiries or requests to be on the True Blue Podcast

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick looks back, analyzes, tells some secret stories, and plays back a good portion of one of the most notorious episodes in the history of "Saturday Night Live." It's the night that "Mr. Television Himself" (as he insisted on being introduced that evening) Milton Berle hosted the show, and the results were altogether insane. While SNL, at that point, was firing on all cylinders (t was the spring of 1979 and the show had reached legendary status by then) and the episode had some great segments (which you will hear), Berle's antics during the show (and especially during writing week, rehearsals, and Dress) eventually got him banned for life from Studio 8H. You will learn why he was asked to host in the first place (NOT Lorne's idea), what happened behind-the-scenes (including Uncle Miltie happily showing everyone the "anaconda" in his pants), how he paid audience members to give him a standing ovation during his closing number, and, in general, how an old-school, vaudevillian ham/joke stealer, got away with some of the most inappropriate, awkward, out-of-touch, and racist material ever performed on SNL. While many of the jokes are wildly offensive, there is a certain nostalgic charm to Berle's appearance, and it's a shocking example of how times completely changed in a 20-year time span. [Ep71]
Gostou do podcast? Então apoie a gente em apoia.se/podcastvfsm

Mit Eva spreche ich darüber, wie sie zur Fotografie gekommen ist, über die Bedeutung von Bildern und wie Bilder gelesen werden können. Milton Berle was the first major American television star and known to millions as “Uncle Milty.” Berle was referred to as Mr. Television in the golden age of TV. As a child he was Buster Brown for Buster Brown Shoes. He had parts in several films, appeared on many TV shows including hosting Saturday Night Live and the Muppet Show. He did some stand-up comedy and had a comedy variety radio show. Maybe you remember the Milton Berle Show with Arnold Stang and deep voiced announcer Frank Gallop. Uncle Milty was probably best known for hosting the “Texaco Star Theatre” where he dominated the Nielsen ratings with a 97 percent share of the viewing audience. He won Emmys for the show and even caused an increase in the sales of televisions.

As the host of NBC's Texaco Star Theater (1948-55), he was the first major American television star and was known to millions of viewers as “Uncle Miltie” and “Mr. Television.” From 1934-36, Berle appeared regularly on Rudy Vallee's radio show. In 1939, he became host of Stop Me If You've Heard This One with panelists spontaneously finishing jokes sent in by listeners. In the late 1940s, he cancelled high-paying nightclub appearances to expand his radio career. His Philip Morris-sponsored show aired on NBC in 1947 and 1948. Scripted by Hal Block and Martin Ragaway, The Milton Berle Show brought Berle together with Arnold Stang. Others in the cast were Pert Kelton, Mary Shipp, Jack Albertson, Arthur Q. Bryan and Ed Begley. It served as a springboard for Berle's emergence as television's first major star.

On November 10th, 1970, comedy legend Milton Berle was a guest of Chuck Schaden's radio program (full interview here - www.speakingofradio.com/interviews/be…milton-actor/)... Early in the conversation recorded in the Green Room at the Mill Run Theatre in suburban Chicago, Berle recalled his first showbiz gig.
This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 98: Christmas Week 1947 with Radio's Biggest Stars ———————————— For the four major radio networks, 1947 was a year or record business: ABC saw a 7.25% gross billings increase. NBC sold out its entire primetime programming block. CBS had seventeen shows with ratings higher than fifteen. And Mutual Broadcasting had the most affiliates in the country. Total radio revenue was over five-hundred million dollars. There were now more than thirty-six million radio homes, and urban centers accounted for 60% of the US population. It was in this season that Milton Berle finally established himself on radio. The Milton Berle Show was one of a half-dozen titles showcasing Berle in his star-crossed radio career. Until 1946 he was considered radio's best-known ratings failure. But NBC saw potential in Berle where CBS had failed. In March of 1947 they gave him his own variety show, sponsored by Philip Morris. It featured some of radio's top comedic talent, like Arnold Stang, Pert Kelton, Arthur Q. Bryan, Jack Albertson, Ed Begley and Frank Gallop. In its second season on NBC Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m, the show's audience jumped 40% and Berle finally cracked radio's Top 50. In December his rating was 17.5 against Big Town on CBS.

Let's get loud, ladies. Erst recht in der Krise!
A Pumpkin Patch, a Typewriter, and Richard Nixon: The Hiss-Chambers Espionage Case
Whittaker Chambers tries to have a peaceful life, working a farm and becoming a high-paid and powerful editor at Time Magazine. But his past in the Soviet underground won't go away. Stalin's pact with Hitler impels him to inform the government about the underground. Worse, from time to time government investigators ask him for more and more information. Chambers tries to expose the conspiracy without ruining his own career or the friends who shared his treason. How long can he continue threading the needle? If you were Chambers, how would you walk the tightrope, trying to alert the government about the Soviet underground without exposing your own role in its crimes and incriminating your best friend in those years, with whom you committed those crimes? If Alger Hiss and Whittaker Chambers both witnessed an event and gave different accounts of it, which one would you be more inclined to believe? Hiss, the public man, has the resume to die for and all The Top People vouching for him. Chambers, the creature of the underground, has been a professional liar for years and loves to tell melodramatic tales. But is there something too good to be true about Hiss? Do you wonder who is the real man behind the resume? And while no one would say that Chambers is the embodiment of moderation, he is painfully honest in many ways and he does not hide all his past sins. Even if your first inclination would be to believe Hiss, what would make you change to put more faith in Chambers? Further Research: Episode 3: Professor Weinstein's book and Chambers' memoir, referenced above, contain much about what Chambers called “the tranquil years.” Re Chambers' emergence from the Communist underground, interesting memoirs are “The Autobiography of Mark Van Doren” by Mark Van Doren at 218-19 (Harcourt Brace & Co, 1958), “Navigating the Rapids 1918-1971: From the Papers of Adolf A. Berle” edited by Beatrice B. Berle & Travis B. Jacobs at 249-50 (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1973), and “Eyewitness to History: Memoirs and Reflections of a Foreign Correspondent for Half a Century” by Isaac Don Levine at 179-200 (Hawthorn Books 1973). Levine was the journalist who accompanied Chambers to see Berle the day World War II began. The best books about Chambers' career at Time are “Harry & Teddy: The Turbulent Friendship of Press Lord Henry Luce and His Favorite Reporter, Theodore H. White” by Thomas Griffith (Random House 1995) and “One Man's America: A Journalist's Search for the Heart of His Country” by Henry Grunwald (Doubleday 1997). Look in each book's index for references to Whittaker Chambers. Concerning the disillusionment with Communism by intellectuals who had been bedazzled by it, see “The God That Failed,” edited by Richard Crossman (Columbia Univ. Press 2001, first published in London in 1950), “Up From Communism: Conservative Odysseys in American Intellectual History” by John P. Diggins (Harper & Row 1975), and “A Better World: The Great Schism: Stalinism and the American Intellectuals” by William L. O'Neill (Simon & Schuster 1982) 259-368 passim. Chambers' admirer in Columbia and later a great Comparative Literature Professor there, Lionel Trilling, wrote a novel about leftist disillusionment with radical leftism. Originally published just before the Hiss-Chambers scandal broke, it was reissued in 1975 (around the time of President Nixon's disgrace). “The Middle of the Journey” by Lionel Trilling (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1975). A major character in the novel, Gifford Maxim, is based on Chambers and the 1975 reissue contains an introduction by Trilling that describes his long relationship with Chambers.

Hello friends, we are back! And yes, we are still here to talk about art. Yet again, we have a great guest on the program today, the very thoughtful Christoph Ruckhäberle. He is of course the renown German painter out of the Leipzig school, if you follow such things, and he was here in town for the opening of his solo show at Gallery Nicolai Wallner. There is a lot of great stuff in this talk, but some of the best things were him talking about using techniques as tools for creating contrast and using sources from art history as tools for applying these techniques. Please enjoy. www.undergang.net
