In this week's episode, Reed sits down with the incredible Vija Williams to discuss a powerful truth: action is the quickest antidote to stress and fear.
In 2022, from the outside looking in you might think Vija Williams had it all. A successful real estate career that wasn't just growing but thriving. A beautiful family. Dreams that were coming true. But what wasn't true is that narrative. Vija's weight had skyrocketed to over 235 pounds. Her health wasn't what it use to be. It was like she didn't notice what was happening and maintained a skewed view of who she was and what she could accomplish. She signed up for not one, but two marathons that fall. When she brushed off her training, her coach told her she had an “Upper Limit problem”. This concept of an “Upper Limit Problem” comes from a book, Big Leap by Gae Hendrick. It's the idea that people set internal limits on how much success, happiness, and love they deserve. When you experience something great, like a promotion or a financial windfall, (or a blossoming real estate career) you subconsciously invite negative thoughts to bring yourself back down to a more comfortable level of happiness. At Vija's first marathon in Patagonia she made it just over half way before being pulled off the course. A few months later in New York City and only 100 yards from where her daughter stood cheering for her mom from the sidelines, Vija hid herself and walked off the course. Something had to change. Vija had to change. Subscribe to the 29029 Podcast for more inspiring content. Learn more about 29029 Events and our community HERE

Contrary to popular opinion, second-generation realtors tend to avoid the path their parents took, as Vija Williams, our guest for today's episode, did. As a political science + English major and a pre-law student, Vija was always on track with her attorney dream. She didn't want to be a realtor. And after landing a prized internship at the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office, this dream of hers solidified. Eventually, Vija began to LOVE the job role, but it only lasted until she realized her brain was not wired for stuff like this. During this period, she started to get into real estate – and the rest, as they say, is history. In today's episode of Real Estate Sessions, Vija talks about her fearless journey to real estate, getting over the inhibition of venturing into the industry, the biggest misconception around it, the pandemic's role in bringing massive changes in the industry, and how to succeed in it. Vija also talks about her personal story and interests, including her love for travel. She chased it despite the odds and her experience as the co-founder of Her Best Life. Listen in!Success clues:● Follow your gut. When Vija realized her brain wasn't wired for this, she decided to trust the feeling and dive into real estate instead.● Communication and failure are two things Vija feels necessary to talk about.● The advice and tips offered by experienced professionals are unparalleled.● Bouncing back to good business post-COVID is challenging but is possible with a solid mindset and grit.Meet The Guest!Vija Williams is the Head of Industry for PLACE, an all-in-one real estate platform that provides technology and business services.
Whether we know it or not - all human beings have an internal thermostat, a certain level of abundance, joy or success we're calibrated to. If we're not careful, that level can make us blow up our lives and self-sabotage when we get everything we've always wanted. Call it your comfort zone, your average or your upper limit problem, this internal temperature gauge runs our lives, and often runs us into the ground if we don't do something about it. Our comfort zones are wrapped up in our identity, and anytime we have to assume a new identity, our brains can fight us and ratchet us down to the standard they are used to. It's how we can lose all the weight and then start eating junk food, or how we can achieve a financial goal and then make a bad decision with money. Without fixing this problem, we're doomed to create unnecessary drama in our lives, constantly sabotage ourselves, taking 2 steps forward and 5 steps back. How do we become aware of our own upper limit and start to raise the temperature? Real estate leader, entrepreneur, coach, speaker and Head of Industry at PLACE, Vija Williams talks about how a season of intense personal growth helped her break through her upper limit problem and become 100 times lighter emotionally. Quotes Conquering some upper limit problems is the number 1 most important thing I've done. -Vija Williams 90% of getting past an upper limit problem is just awareness. Anytime you see yourself sabotaging, take some white space time and ask, “what am I not admitting to myself right now?” -Vija Williams I have learned to think in questions, not answers. -Vija Williams I'm a big fan of asking myself questions, that's my awareness tool. -Kevin Kauffman Key Points How to identify an upper limit problem A sure sign of having an upper limit problem is sabotaging yourself when you've succeeded at something or got what you want. You hit your weight loss target and immediately binge on junk food. You make money and then go and spend a ton of money unnecessarily. In real estate, it's having a really great listing appointment but procrastinating and failing to follow up. All these are signs that we're trying to ratchet our lives back down to an underlying identity. Crossover self-sabotage Upper limit problems don't always manifest in the same place. Instead of sabotaging your weight loss results by eating a bunch of junk food, you could lose weight and then go and needlessly spend a bunch of money. You can actually cross-sabotage ourselves without even knowing it by blowing your life up in a completely different area. Intense Clusters of Growth Personal growth can happen gradually over time, but sometimes we go through intense clusters of personal growth that concentrate the learning and also concentrate the results. Often we'll feel that we're gaining momentum, and no one sees it, and that's the hardest part of the journey. If you're still going through the process, and it seems like no one's seeing it, keep going. If you keep your eye on the prize, the change in you will become very obvious on the surface. The right question, not the right answer Asking ourselves questions is one of the most powerful awareness we have. When we're aware enough of what's going on in our lives, we can ask ourselves high quality questions that move the needle. In coaching, a session should end with the right focusing question, not the answer. Then someone sits down and unpeels the layers to get to the right thing for them. Sneaky ways your upper limit problem creeps up on us Another sneaky way an upper limit problem presents itself is avoiding taking risks to create or maintain stability. It's having all the money to buy an investment property and just not being able to pull the trigger. It might also manifest in an inability to celebrate big wins, or having an unquenchable, undisciplined pursuit of more. “Kolnasātys” gruomotplaukta rubrikā Laura Melne itūreiz pastuosteis par naseņ izdūtū dzejneicys Dagnejis kruojumu “Ups, kūki i mes”. Dagneja, eistajā vuordā Dagneja Dudarjonoka, īprīšk zynoma ari kai Dagneja Bramane latgalīšu literaturā nav skaitoma par debitanti, tok itei ir juos pyrmuo gruomota. Īprīšk Dagnejis dzejūli publicāti vairuokūs kūpkruojumūs i izlasēs. Nu tūs juoizceļ 2016. godā kūpā ar treis cytom latgalīšu dzejneicom Janu Skrivļu-Čeveri, Ligiju Purinašu i Guntu Nagli izdūtais kruojums “Linejis”. Tamā ir daudz dobys i lauku dzeivis realeju, tok natryukst ari piļsātu (Rēzeknis i Daugovpiļs), kuruos nazkod bejušys svareigys, tok niu pasauļs i dzeive puorsamejuse. I tod, dzeivojūt laukūs, īspiejams, juosoka pošai sev, ka ari rokstūt var pīkust vēļ vaira kai māslu tolkā. Kruojumu var uztvert ari kai ceļuojumu pa Latgolu – nu Upeitis i Baļtinovys zīmeļūs da Indrys dīnavydūs. Pa vydu ir Preili ar vyslobuokajim dzeļžu veikalim, Aglyunys Maizis muzeja Vija i Neicgaļa lelais akmiņs. Naiztrukst ari jau na vīna viņ latgalīšu literata dorbūs maneituo sacynuojuma, ka Latgola niu ir cytaižuoka kai nazkod, i tys ir tik normali. Dagneja daudz roksta par mīlesteibu, sīvītis i veirīša attīceibom. Tok Dagnejai tys saīt labi i vīgli – kai dabērt veiram captajam kotletam suoļa vītā cukru vīnā nu dzejūļu. I tod “vīns griudeņš īkryta kuldā/niule mes treis/kvīšu teirumā leiksnā”. Byut dzejneicai i moza bārna mamai nūzeimoj storp luoču iz pologim i ežu iz puorvalkim prasavuošonu izlikt atguodynuojumu kotru dīnu raudzeit pīraksteit pa dzejūļam. Bet cytureiz režims “Natraucēt” ir juoizlīk pošai sev, kab varātu vierzeitīs preteimā jaunam pavasaram, i juoluopej pošai sevi, na pasauli. Dagnejis dzejā cīši labi sadzeivoj realitate – precizūs vuordūs, bez lelu metaforu i epitetu mežgiņu apraksteita kasdīna – i hiperbolys aba puorspīlejumi, kas šaļtim pa vydu tai īsajauc pieški i nagaideitai. Sābris, kurs naktī dzeivūklī spielej boulingu, papeiru kopuošona klāva restoranam i diskotekys taiseišona kūkim. Natryukst ari vuordu spēļu, kas maņ kai kruojuma korektorei šaļtim lyka sev vaicuot – tai tī eistyn beja dūmuots? Pīmāram, “šmukuokuo aviokatastrofa viestulē”. Taipat atseviškūs dzejūļūs var atrast Dagnejis dzymtajai Vuorkovys izlūksnei rakstureigus vuordus. Te ir “kuo”, na “kai” i “kakis”, na “kačs”. Kruojuma nūsaukums ir “Ups, kūki i mes”. Ir Dubna, Daugova, Feimanka, ir upe, kurā naktī peilis klīdz i saguojuši zandarti i leini. Ir bārzs kai brats, plievspuorni, kas karinej kūkūs, i vaicuojums, voi kūki redz vaira kai mes. I ir daudzi “mes”, tok šaļtim ruodīs, ka grybātūs vaira laika ari “es”.

We've talked before about the value of doing hard things, and this episode is proof that we are true to our word. In the middle of everything else going on, Vija took on one of the hardest things a human can do: A marathon at the bottom of the world in Patagonia. Hear about how she learned from her experiences, the lessons she learned, and moving forward when failure is the only option. Listen in! Success clues: ● Follow your gut. When Vija realized her brain wasn't wired for this, she decided to trust the feeling and dive into real estate instead. ● Communication and failure are two things Vija feels necessary to talk about. ● The advice and tips offered by experienced professionals are unparalleled. ● Bouncing back to good business post-COVID is challenging but is possible with a solid mindset and grit. Meet The Guest! Vija Williams is the Head of Industry for PLACE, an all-in-one real estate platform that provides technology and business services. PLACE currently supports and partners with agents and teams from a variety of brokerage brands all across the US and Canada in over 100 unique markets. Valsts izcelsme nebija zināma un arī skaidra, bieži attiecībā uz to varēja izmantot frāzi “Vai tu vari man to parādīt kartē?” Mazo valstu liktenis.

Although Vija Williams was doing well financially running her own real estate team, she realized that she was miserable. She felt she had to do 17 different things to run a good team, but she wasn't good at any of them. And her profit margin wasn't high enough to support the number of staff she needed. So at 48 years old, despite having doubts about whether people would still hire her because of her age, the mom of three took a leap of faith and took on a role that she believes she'd be really good at, a leadership position in a corporate setting. In 2018, Vija Williams became the Director of Growth with Ben Kinney Companies. For the last three and a half years, she has helped walk them through two acquisitions and grow the company from 1200 to 1700 agents. Today, Vija is the Head of Industry for PLACE, a tech and business services platform for real estate agents. Goldman Sachs, along with 3L, recently invested 100 million dollars into PLACE at over a Billion dollar valuation. Brian Charlesworth joins Vija Williams as they talk about her journey from being a solo agent to being a successful leader, her insights on the value of leverage, what makes PLACE a very unique model, and why she thinks women from all industries become stronger when they come together. Top Takeaways: (07:14) Why Vija felt miserable despite having a successful team (08:48) How Vija decided to shift her career to running brokerages (11:18) Why does the real estate industry need more women in the leadership role? She graduated college, sold radio advertising, and worked for some builders and developers prior to becoming a real estate agent. She was 30 years and had her first child at that time, had her second child at 32, and her third at 39 years old. She was making good money juggling her role as a mother and a real estate agent. But when the market crashed, it fried her and her husband to the point where they almost lost their house. Luckily they still had assets to sell to survive. When the markets turned, she switched brokerages and went from being a solo agent to building a team. In 2012, Vija met Ben Kinney and he started coaching her. Her volume increased from 25 million to 70 million in just four years. Although she was extremely successful, Vijya felt unhappy. She wanted to try a leadership position in a corporate setting but she wasn't sure if anyone would accept her since she was already 48 years old. But with people supporting her, she was able to achieve her goal and became the Director of Growth for The Ben Kinney Companies. Today, Vija Williams is the Head of Industry for PLACE, President of the Brokerages Division at Ben Kinney Companies, Co-Founder of Her Best Life - a national women's group, and co-host of the Empire Building podcast.
Have you ever felt like you don't know what to do with your life? You know we have to solve just about 101 existential crises in our lifetime, and you want to pick a career that does some good for the world and helps us solve these problems, but at the same time, you have so many friends who have had a terrible time working at nonprofits and social impact orgs, either because they are poorly run or because they work on such complex issues that they have to celebrate for such incremental change or risk being depressed all the time. So you wonder if it is a better idea to sell out and donate your money so that you will have a better quality of life, but that doesn't feel very satisfying either. So you write a hail-mary application to grad school even though you're not entirely convinced that that will help you to do good either. In this episode we sit down with our friend Vija about how the hell you're supposed to figure out what to do with your life. Vija started out last summer after working in wilderness therapy thinking she was going to drive across the country with her dog (#vanlife) to end up in New Hampshire by the end of the summer, where she was going to embark on a year-long project making art and living rent-free at her friend's parent's house. Turns out, before she made it to New Hampshire, she met someone and decided to move in with them in Boulder, CO, where they lasted six weeks before breaking up and she moved back in with her parents in Chicago. Now she is applying to Master's programs in design. We talk about how to figure out what to prioritize in your career, how to choose your "hero's work" (this will all be explained in the episode), and whether it makes sense to "follow your passion" even though it's not entirely clear how to find your passion in the first place. Lai gan tautas deju kolektīvi klātienē var mēģināt un dejā rokās sadoties tikai kopš 20. augusta, daļa skolēnu deju kolektīvu no visas Latvijas pāris nedēļās sagatavojuši pirms pandēmijas apgūtās dejas. Tās aizvadītajās brīvdienās nofilmētas Latvijas skolu jaunatnes dziesmu un deju svētku deju lielkoncerta “Saule vija zelta rotu” ierakstam. VEF kultūras pilī lielkoncerta “Saule vija zelta rotu” filmēšanas pirmajā dienā pulcējas deju kolektīvi no dažādiem Latvijas reģioniem. Skatuves kulisēs vēl mirkli pirms iznāciena bērni grūstās un stājas pa pāriem, joko, smejas un vienlaikus mazliet satraucas, bet deju skolotājas nemitīgi atgādina par plašiem smaidiem un vēl steidz kādam no dejotājiem salikt kreklu biksēs vai piešūt pēkšņi atirušo brunču malu. Lielkoncerta filmēšanā deju “Balodītis” izdejo Balvu Kultūras un atpūtas centra deju kolektīvs “Balvu Vilciņš”. Katram kolektīvam iedalīta aptuveni pusstunda dejas un deju raksta nofilmēšanai, tad skatuve jānodod nākamajam kolektīvam. Balvu vilciņa vadītāja Zane Meiere ar audzēkņiem pēc filmēšanas stāsta, ka iepriekš apgūto deju pus otru gadu nebija iespējas atkārtot un nedēļas laikā ļoti intensīvos mēģinājumos bērni ar uzdevumu tikuši galā. “Sudmaliņas” izdejo 5.-9. klašu jaunieši no Dobeles Kultūras nama deju kolektīva “Drellīši”. Tie dejotāji, kuri pieredzējuši svētkus citos gados secina, ka viss, protams, šoreiz ir citādi. Sākot ar to, ka nav iespēju satikt citus kolektīvus.
Grāmatā "Bet vijole skanēs mūžam" viņa rakstījusi: "Jutu tēva dvēseli, to lielo mīlestību, ar kādu viņš aplūko katru savu vijoli, savu gara bērnu, kuru veidojis, izjūtot radīšanas prieku." Šobrīd Vija Laganovska dzīvo Rīgā, kad uzrunāju viņu intervijai, viņa sarunas laiku atļauj man izvēlēties diezgan brīvi. Bērni izauguši, sarunas beigās Vija Laganovska teiks, ka tagad viņai sākusies jauna dzīve – tāda, kādu vienmēr to ir gribējusi. Vija Laganovska neraksta latgaliski. Taču perifērijas, noslēgtas vides dzīves īstenība ir viņa stāstos. Arī viensētas plašums un vientulība. Jānis Klīdzējs savulaik, skaidrojot “Cilvēka bērna” tapšanu, rakstīja, ka latgalieša pasaules uzskata centrā ir viņa ticība Dievam, un tieši tas viņu atšķir no pārnovadniekiem. Šobrīd latviešu literatūrā ļoti spēcīgi sevi pieteikušas dzīvi pieredzējušas sievietes. Iepretim oficiālajai jeb vīriešvēsturei – his story, šobrīd arī Latvijā tiek sarakstīta tikpat spēcīga sieviešu vēsture – her story. Taču, ja Inga Ābele prot traģēdiju uzrakstīt tik skaisti, ka tā nemaz vairs neliekas traģiska, Laura Vinogradova koķetē ar pasakas laimīgajām beigām, Jana Egle rāda smalkās saiknes, kas sasaista likteņus, tad Vijas Laganovskas stāstos liekas, ka mierinājuma nav. Lai gan - es pamazām sāku saprast, ka vienkārši neesmu pratusi to ieraudzīt.
Activating the Four Types of Mentorship When Her Story of Success CEO Leah Glover Hayes was looking for mentorship to help her grow in her career and eventually start a company, she quickly realized that not all mentorship is created equally. And while experts tend to agree that mentorship makes a major difference in determining someone’s career success and fulfillment, few people are sharing specifics about how to find the right mentor and build a mutually beneficial relationship. Leah believes that there are four types of mentorship: Passive mentorship, peer mentorship, traditional mentorship and mentoring others. No matter where you are in your career journey, you can benefit from implementing one or all of these in your life. In part three of this four-part series, Leah is joined by Anna-Vija McClain to discuss the importance of peer mentorship. Her Story of Success… Anna-Vija McClain didn’t intend to start Piccolo Marketing, but when she needed a source of income after leaving the hospitality industry, she realized that many business owners could benefit from her digital marketing skills. Anna-Vija grew that early work into a successful company that helps small business owners create scalable businesses with great culture. Today, Piccolo Marketing includes Piccolo University, a series of online courses that teach business owners how to market, and Piccolo Marketing Mentor, a service that provides outsourced marketing professionals to business owners. Outside of Piccolo, Anna-Vija sits on boards for the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and Nashville Emerging Leaders. She’s also a mentor at SCORE Nashville and a founding mentor for Vanderbilt Women in Business. In 2019, Anna-Vija was a finalist for the Nashville Emerging Leader Chamber of Commerce Award. In This Episode: Leah and Anna-Vija discuss the ways that they’ve used peer mentorship to help expand their networks and learn from other business owners. Anna-Vija also explains how you can develop an abundance mindset and view your relationships through the lens of “cooper-tition.” Episode Highlights: Anna-Vija’s story of starting Piccolo Marketing Using referrals to focus on the work you do best The importance of developing an abundance mindset around peer mentorship How to get the most out of your mentoring relationships Sponsor: This podcast is sponsored in part by Piccolo Marketing, providing outsourced marketing professionals for business owners. How do you build a business that ties in healthily with your life? While you’re trying to bring in millions in revenue, are you there for your children, your spouse, your loved ones, or even yourself? If not, why are you building the business at all? This was a main topic of discussion for the hosts of the Empire Building Podcast, Wendy Papasan, Sarah Reynolds, Seychelle Van Poole, and Vija Williams.Wendy, Sarah, Seychelle, and Vija have all grown massive real estate empires throughout their own respective markets. Now, they teach others to do the same through their podcast and their live event, Amplify. We talk through some key topics like how all these successful women juggle their business/personal lives, when the right time to say “no” is, how to grow your business, how to hire successfully, and knowing your numbers. All agree that a big part of being successful is saying “no”. That doesn’t mean turning down everything, but it does mean saying no to things that will interrupt your time with family and friends. Sarah, specifically, talks about how she was unable to put her kids to bed most nights of the week, since she was coming home at 10PM from the office. What did she do? She made it a rule to leave by 5PM. This not only helped her be there for her daughter, but allowed her team to take bigger roles. These four women all personify what it means to be successful in business and in life. Not only that, they can help you too find the best way to build a “big life” not just a big business. In This Episode We CoverAnswering the classic “how do you do it all?” questionRunning 7-figure real estate empiresBeing super selective with what you say “yes” toDefining your personal mission and looking at it dailyLearning the power of hiring so your business can build sustainablyFiguring out the profit/loss ratio of your lifeAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowKeller WilliamsBKCO EscrowAMPLIFY EventBiggerPockets Business Podcast 06: How to Manage Your Time Like a Millionaire With Jay PapasanPapasan PropertiesKWKCCheck the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/bizshow98

The guest on this episode of BTL is one that I always seek out when I find out she is at a conference, and to think that she has exploded with tremendous growth just in the last few years. And to think, she mentioned that she thought she was late in the game of leadership. So for all of the listeners out there, have you ever thought to yourself that it's too late in your career to do something different and new? Maybe saying to yourself that, “you're not that young anymore” or “ I'll be dead by the time I could ever do that!” What about in your daily schedule, telling yourself “it's too late in the day to make a good dinner” or “it's too late in the day to get that workout in.” Well I'll be blunt about it. It is never too late. Whether you have these types of conversations with yourself or with others, YOU have to know that it is never too late! Behind the scenes of this self talk is a theme around communication. Learning about and mastering the skill of effective communication is your key. Communicating with yourself, your family, your partner, your peers, your bosses and managers, or your employees is THE special power that we all possess and have the ability to optimize. One of the top superheroes in the skill of communication is the guest of this episode, Vija Williams. One of Vija's many superpowers is communication which has aided in her progression of compounding success from being a solo entrepreneur, to becoming one of the most well known leaders in her industry. Not only is Vija a masterful leader due to her relentlessly persistent work ethic and communication skills, but she also discusses how this carries into her personal life within her family, as well as others that she surrounds herself with - all while running 12 massive entities that support nearly 1500 members. We all are born with the opportunity and responsibility to lead ourselves and furthermore, our option to carry that forward and lead others in our lives to make an impact in their lives. Un kopumā to apvieno viens vārds, ko mēs varam izteikt četros burtos - ZEME.”

Galu galā, šī dzēriena recepte it kā skaitoties viens no vispamatīgāk glabātajiem cilvēces noslēpumiem.

Vija Williams director of growth at Ben Kinney Companies and top 1% achiever talks about how a broker can build a successful real estate team.

Nancy Lim: During the mid and late 60s, she was especially interested in what she called ‘impossible images'. So for example: flames, explosions, clouds. Things that are impossible to fix and pin down. Vija Celmins: I actually had a friend who was doing houses in a very different kind of way. Tony Berlant: I remember when Vija made these little houses, which was sort of my trademark at the time. But Vija's had this specific quality. The drama of her very personal intense imagery. Vija Celmins: They're World War Two images from clippings that I had started collecting. Looking for images that were maybe a little more connected with myself. Tony Berlant: I very much remember Vija telling me the experience of running through the streets with buildings on fire all around her during a bombing raid. Vija Celmins: Kind of a going back over my childhood, and I think this, especially the houses, look a little bit like toys, which is kind of nice. Nancy Lim: One opens up and the other does not. The fur, it's real fox fur. And so you might look at it and immediately think this is so soft. How nice would it feel if I put my arm in there, but who knows what's at the bottom…
Vija Celmins: I used to walk my dog on Venice Beach. And I was hunting for images, you know, like I hunt for the image, and then I put it in another context. That's pretty much what I do. Tony Berlant: I remember the first time I saw a whole bunch of photographs sitting just inside her front window and saying you know, what, what are these? And she said, oh, those are just some photographs I took from the end of the pier. Vija Celmins: I wanted to kind of get down to a more specific spatial thing. So I picked up the pencil. I started drawing and I thought of it like a documentation of one surface onto another one. Gary Garrels: She did not allow herself to erase at any point. This is all just building up the image through a series of different strokes and letting parts of the paper become more apparent. So the lighter sections are where there's more of the paper showing through. And if she made mistakes, then the drawing was destroyed. In looking at them, they're rather like small miracles that anyone could have this amount of focus and attention and the kind of magic of transforming a very ordinary photograph into this extraordinary object. Tony Berlant: For decades, I lived with one of these pictures and it feels like the dream not quite remembered. It's almost like these pieces have a scent or a taste to them. Not just what you see visually but a kind of feeling state that's subtle—they're very much outside of category. And what's left is Vija.
Vija Celmins: I painted everything in my studio and I was starting to look for other images to use. This is a letter from 1968. And it's a letter from my mother. I used to have the letters drop in on the floor of the studio through the mail slot. I was starting to do some drawings. Giving painting a little break, and this is one of the early drawings, getting kind of used to using a pencil. Gary Garrels: She added what look like stamps, but are very tiny drawings of war scenes, and disasters, and bombings, which recall her memories of having grown up in Europe. Her family fled her native country, Latvia, in 1944, just as the Soviet troops were invading. They spent the next four years moving between refugee camps in Germany until they were resettled to Indianapolis, where Vija then grew up. She moved there at the age of 10, not speaking any English, and drawing was something that was incredibly important for her. So this drawing of the letter, I think is a reference back to the idea of being displaced. In moving to Los Angeles, she really didn't know anybody. She was alone. And I think, obviously, this letter from her mother had some special place in her life at the time.
Vija Celmins: You're looking at a painting called The Heater, a painting I did in 1964. I was in graduate school, UCLA, about 24 years old. I was floundering around in my painting. Doing mostly abstract expressionist painting, and I fell into this period where I was throwing away a lot of ideas. So I started painting these simple paintings of objects in my studio. Like the heater you see here, and my lamps. I painted my refrigerator, all the food. And the idea was that I wanted to kind of quiet down and just look and paint. Like eye to brain. Tony Berlant: The irony to me always with Vija is the understated small quietness is so dramatic and engulfing. Especially during a period when people were making big, gestural, abstract, muscular paintings. She always felt that the rules did not apply to her.
Vija Celmins: I think I just came upon this photograph of a web and I was thinking, “My God, this guy, the spider, was, you know, doing my drawings, reflecting a beautiful two-dimensional plane.” Nancy Lim: She found this image in the early 1990s. One of the things that she liked about it was that it felt a little bit lonely and she's always liked that quality in her source images. Tony Berlant: They're very seductive in making you want to look at them. It's understated, but it is that Vija thing of drawing you in. Vija Celmins: I found myself sort of remembering about lines. I'm not a line person. You know, I'm a mass person. I kind of organize masses. Nancy Lim: She realized there was something too exciting about the spider web. You know, its connotations of despair and of breaking down and of age. There was something that seemed so sensational, she wanted to leave all of that behind. Vija Celmins: I wanted the images to stay more bland so you would focus more on really how they were made or how were they were not made. So I stopped. Because I'm always stopping and starting and thinking about what painting might be.
Introduction Vija Celmins: Maybe what I would like is the viewer to have an experience that is a sort of a waking up experience like drawing in a breath and saying, “Oh!” Nancy Lim: Welcome to the audio guide for Vija Celmins: To Fix the Image in Memory. I'm Nancy Lim, assistant curator of painting and sculpture here at SFMOMA. Gary Garrels: I'm Gary Garrels, the Elise S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at SFMOMA. This is an exhibition I've been thinking about and planning and working on for almost 10 years and I hope you will find it as engaging as I have. Nancy Lim: We'll also be hearing from Celmins' longtime friend and fellow artist Tony Berlant. Tony Berlant: I think I first met Vija around 1962. She was just so technically accomplished. Vija Celmins: Most of my work and the images I work with come from my own ordinary life activities. I'm not a symbolic painter or political painter, I don't have any real big message in that way. It's a looking experience.

For the first 42 years of his life, Dallas was a guy who "wouldn't be caught dead" doing yoga, or anything like it.When he ruptured his L4 and L5 spinal discs during the height of his professional wrestling career, he was so desperate to keep his childhood dream alive, he was willing to try anything. So he tried yoga for the first time in his life.Because Dallas (DDP) had so much experience in many other areas of fitness, he quickly started mixing elements of yoga with his rehab and traditional calisthenics. For almost a decade, DDP has refined his program and has become a master at teaching it to others, as well as motivating individuals to believe that anything is possible with dedication and hard work.Along the way, Dallas learned that very deconditioned men and women could do DDP YOGA as well -- he was amazed to see stories of people doing DDP YOGA losing literally hundreds of pounds! As Dallas puts it, "weight loss just happens to be a really AWESOME side effect of DDP YOGA!"DDP Yoga combines the very best of yoga, old-school calisthenics, sports rehabilitation therapy and dynamic resistance to create one of the most effective fitness plans in existence today. It allows anyone to:Get a kick-ass cardio workoutIncrease flexibilityStrengthen core musclesExperience almost no joint impactWhat Makes DDPY Different Than Traditional Yoga and Other Fitness Programs? What separates DDP Yoga from all other kinds of yoga is not just that it is fronted by a celebrity, or that the program combines yoga positions and calisthenics with physical therapy principles, or even that it has an interactive app that lets its users do the workouts from anywhere, but that DDPY is something that anybody at any age or skill level can do. Unlike traditional yoga, DDP Yoga isn't just stretching, it's stretching and strengthening your muscles, ligaments, and tendons.DDP Yoga may have a strong celebrity following (e.g. Darius Rucker, Chris Jericho, A.J. Styles, Gabriel Iglesias), but the program is rooted in adaptability and “making it your own.” Finding the motivation to start doing DDPY is often the major hurdle for people, as it may entail trying things that were not originally part of their lifestyle. In addition to steadily completing the workouts, followers of DDPY are encouraged to reconsider their diets and overall attitude. When following all of these concepts, results are nearly guaranteed. The San Jose Museum of Art is pleased to offer this audio tour to compliment your visit to the exhibition De-Natured: Works from the Anderson Art Collection. In it you will hear commentary by curator Heather Green, interviews with several of the artists in the exhibition, and insight into the collection provided by Harry W. Anderson himself. You can download it to your iPod or other audio device for your next visit to the museum! In this episode Vija Celmins speaks about her two drawings in the exhibition De-Natured: Works from the Anderson Collection; on view at the San Jose Museum of Art October 13, 2007 - January 6, 2008. Broadly defined, to denature is to change the character or condition of something. In the milieu of contemporary painting, sculpture, and work on paper seen in this exhibition, it is the connection between artist and nature that has changed. Gone are the romantic vistas and picturesque scenes of traditional landscape painting. Instead we find images of pollution and alienation that mirror the post-war urban-industrial landscape, depictions in which artistic media have been pressed into embodiments of natural elements (and vice versa), and abstractions that highlight a distance between the world perceived and the world represented. Featuring works by artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Roy DeForest, David Hockney, Vija Celmins, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson, and Richard Diebenkorn, the art of De-Natured presents a sampling of the many ways that artists have engaged with their changing environs. At a time when we are increasingly “growing up denatured,” as one New York Times writer recently described the divide between urban and pastoral life, these artistic collisions with nature (or its absence) have much to tell us about our own relationships with the environment, both natural and urban. This exhibition was curated by Heather Pamela Green, a doctoral candidate in Art History at Stanford University, and features work drawn from the Collection of Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson, as well as the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's Anderson Graphic Arts Collection.
