They are very targeted and easily digestible so that the tips you hear today and in the previous and coming episodes, you can implement right in your next lesson. We have identified 3 very simple, yet extremely effective accommodations that any teacher can include in any lesson, so that the lesson becomes more accessible to our English learners. Last week, we talked about why using visuals as well as what types of visuals can be included. Today, I want to talk about the second accommodation, simplifying your language for ELs. What does it mean, simpler language? Won't it impede the students' language development? What about higher order thinking that we require our students to engage in daily? I will answer all these questions, as well as provide 6 ways that you can simplify your language in a way that is effective not only for content, but also for language learning. Show Notes:Episode 129 - Why Simplifying Your Language for ELs Leads to Effective Higher Order ThinkingToday's episode:Digital Masterclass Library “Light the Way to EL Teaching SuccessFree resources - sign up and keep in touch:Accommodate and Modify Your Lessons for ELs with Less than 1 Hour of Planning a Week - classroom teacher and admin checklist Free Audio Training - 3 Mindset Shifts for Instilling and Living Out a Belief that All Teachers are Teachers of Language.ESL Newcomer Teaching ChecklistSave time and build confidence in your EL teaching with these resources:EMBARK™ Newcomer CurriculumThe ESL Teaching Roadmap – EL curriculum and coaching membership for middle and high school ESL/ELL teachers.Book a $0 Consult Call - Lead ELs to Progress without OverwhelmEssential Lesson Plan BundleMy TpT storeRecord a comment for us - click HERE. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Sandra McMahon, an experienced speech pathologist with specific expertise in multiple birth children, about the unique challenges and considerations in language development for twins, triplets or more.Sandra discusses the importance of early intervention in speech pathology, emphasizing that while some children might naturally outgrow certain communication difficulties, early support is crucial for better long-term outcomes. She highlights how addressing feeding issues early on can impact speech and language development, given the coordination required for both tasks. She highlights three key areas for parents and educators to be mindful of when thinking about the language development of multiple birth children and offers practical advice for parents concerned about their children's communication skills. Sandra also clarifies the popular view that multiple birth children have their own secret language and explains what is happening when multiple birth children seem to speak their own language. This is a must-listen episode for anyone raising multiples who wants to learn more about how to support their children's language development. How to connect with Dr McMahon:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SpeechNetSpeechPathologyWebsite: www.speechnet.com.auThanks for listening! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Higher-Order Forecasts, published by Ozzie Gooen on May 25, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Higher-order forecasting could be a useful concept for prediction markets and forecasting systems more broadly. The core idea is straightforward: Nth-order forecasts are forecasts about (N-1)th order forecasts. Examples Here are some examples: 0-Order Forecasting (i.e., the ground truth) Biden won the 2020 U.S. presidential election The US GDP in 2023 was $27 trillion 1st-Order Forecasting (i.e., regular forecasting) What is the chance that Trump will win the 2024 U.S. presidential election? What will be the GDP of the US in 2024? 2nd-Order Forecasting How much will the forecasts for US GDP in 2024 and 2025 be correlated over the next year? How many forecasts will the question "What will be the GDP of the US in 2024?" receive in total? If the question "What is the chance that a Republican will win the 2028 Presidential Election?" was posted to Manifold, with a subsidy of 100k Mana, what would the prediction be, after 1 month?" 3rd-Order Forecasting How much will the forecasts, [How much will the forecasts for US GDP in 2024 and 2025 be correlated over the next year?] and [How many forecasts will the question "What will be the GDP of the US in 2024?" receive in total?], be correlated, from now until 2024? How valuable were all the forecasts for the question, ['How many forecasts will the question "What will be the GDP of the US in 2024?" receive in total?'] As forecasting systems mature, higher-order forecasts could play a role analogous to financial derivatives in markets. Derivatives allow for more efficient pricing, risk transfer, and information aggregation by letting market participants express views on the relationships between assets. Similarly, higher-order forecasts could allow forecasters to express views on the relationships between predictions, leading to a more efficient and informative overall forecasting ecosystem. Benefits Some potential benefits of higher-order forecasting include: 1. Identify Overconfidence Improve the accuracy of forecasts by having participants directly predict and get rewarded for estimating overconfidence or poor calibration in other forecasts. "How overconfident is [forecast/forecaster] X" 2. Prioritize Questions Prioritize the most important and decision-relevant questions by forecasting the value of information from different predictions. "How valuable is the information from forecasting question X?" 3. Surface Relationships Surface key drivers and correlations between events by letting forecasters predict how different questions relate to each other. "How correlated will the forecasts for questions X and Y be over [time period]?" 4. Faster Information Aggregation Enable faster aggregation of information by allowing forecasts on future forecast values, which may update more frequently than the underlying events. "What will the forecast for question X be on [future date], conditional on [other forecasts or events]?" 5. Leverage Existing Infrastructure Leverage the existing infrastructure and resolution processes of prediction platforms, which are already designed to handle large numbers of forecasting questions. We've already seen some early examples of higher-order forecasts on platforms like Manifold Markets. For example, with the recent questions: Will there be a Manifold bot that makes profitable bets on random 1-month markets by December 2024? (Ṁ3,000 subsidy!) Manifold Top Traders Leaderboard Ranking Prediction (2024) If Manifold begins allowing real-money withdrawals, will its accuracy improve? Is Manifold's P(Doom) by 2050 currently between 10% and 90%? [Resolves to Poll] Will Manifold be more accurate than real-money markets in forecasting the 2024 election? Challenges Of course, there are also challenges and risks to cons...

Higher order operators are a special form of operators in torch.ops which have relaxed input argument requirements: in particular, they can accept any form of argument, including Python callables. Their name is based off of their most common use case, which is to represent higher order functions like control flow operators. However, they are also used to implement other variants of basic operators and can also be used to smuggle in Python data that is quite unusual. They are implemented using a Python dispatcher.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Simple versus Short: Higher-order degeneracy and error-correction, published by Daniel Murfet on March 11, 2024 on LessWrong. TLDR: The simplicity bias in Bayesian statistics is not just a bias towards short description length. The folklore relating the simplicity bias in Bayesian statistics to description length is incomplete: while it is true that the fewer parameters you use the better, the true complexity measure which appears in the mathematical theory of Bayesian statistics (that is, singular learning theory) is more exotic. The content of this complexity measure remains quite mysterious, but in this note we point out that in a particular setting it includes a bias towards runtime error-correction. This suggests caution when reasoning about the role of inductive biases in neural network training. Acknowledgements. Thanks to Jesse Hoogland, Liam Carroll, Rumi Salazar and Simon Pepin Lehalleur for comments. 1. Background 1.1 Relevance to Deep Learning Consider the problem of solving an ordinary differential equation. A constructive proof involves actually writing down a solution, or an algorithm that in finite time will produce a solution. The Picard-Lindelöf theorem proves that a solution to a broad class of initial value problems exists, but the proof is not constructive: it sets up a contraction mapping on a complete metric space and appeals to the Banach fixed point theorem. While the Picard-Lindelöf theorem uniquely characterises the solution as the fixed point of a contraction mapping, and gives an iterative process for approximating the solution, it does not construct the solution. However a construction is not necessary for many of the applications of Picard-Lindelöf (in differential geometry, topology and many parts of analysis). This mode of reasoning about mathematical objects, where it suffices to have characterised[1] them by (universal) properties, is pervasive in modern mathematics (in the above example, the characterising property is the differential equation, or its associated contraction mapping). However this may seem quite alien to a computer scientist or programmer, who for historical reasons tend to think that there is only one mode of reasoning about mathematical objects, and that is centred on the study of a construction. In an era where programs are increasingly the product of gradient descent rather than human construction, this attitude is untenable. We may have to accept a mode of reasoning about learned programs, based on understanding the nature of the problems to which they are a solution and the iterative processes that produce them. To understand the implicit algorithms learned by neural networks, it may be necessary from this perspective to understand the computational structures latent in the data distribution, and the inductive biases of neural network training. We do not currently have a good understanding of these matters. If we understood these inductive biases better, it could conceivably help us in the context of AI alignment to answer questions like "how likely is deceptive alignment", "how likely is consequentialism", and "what goals are instrumentally convergent"? This note is about the inductive biases of the Bayesian learning process (conditioned on more samples, the posterior increasingly localises around true parameters). Since Bayesian statistics is both fundamental and theoretically tractable, this seems potentially useful for understanding the inductive biases of neural network training. However it is worth noting that the relation between these is not understood at present. 1.2 Singular Learning Theory The asymptotic expansion of the Bayesian free energy, or "free energy formula'', proven by Watanabe in Singular Learning Theory (SLT) introduces the learning coefficient λ as a measure of complexity that balances ...

Abstract: The thalamus is primarily known as a relay for sensory information; however, it also critically contributes to higher-order cortical processing and coordination. Thalamocortical hyperconnectivity is associated with hallucinatory phenomena that occur in various psychopathologies (e.g., psychosis, migraine aura) and altered states of consciousness (ASC, e.g., induced by psychedelic drugs). However, the exact functional contribution of thalamocortical hyperconnectivity in forming hallucinatory experiences is unclear. Flicker light stimulation (FLS) can be used as an experimental tool to induce transient visual hallucinatory phenomena in healthy participants. Here, we use FLS in combination with fMRI to test how FLS modulates thalamocortical connectivity between specific thalamic nuclei and visual areas. We show that FLS induces thalamocortical hyperconnectivity between LGN, early visual areas and proximal upstream areas of ventral and dorsal visual streams (e.g., hV4, VO1, V3a). Further, an exploratory analysis indicates specific higher-order thalamic nuclei, such as anterior and mediodorsal nuclei, to be strongly affected by FLS. Here, the connectivity changes to upstream cortical visual areas directly reflect a frequency-dependent increase in experienced visual phenomena. Together these findings contribute to the identification of specific thalamocortical interactions in the emergence of visual hallucinations. Copy rights belong to original authors. Let's chat about an easy way to push students' observations, analyses, and questioning to a higher level. Using a strategy known as "Think Like A Disciplinarian," students are challenged to take on the perspective of an expert in a field or topic. Students ask questions, make observations, and draw relevant conclusions that a specific disciplinarian would note about our topic of study.  Why is this helpful for teaching higher order thinking skills? Taking on a specific perspective allows students to openly ask questions and analyze a topic in a more complex way, vs just making our own observations as 5th graders Social pressure of being viewed as "wrong" or not knowing something everyone else knows is virtually eliminated when we shoulder the questions onto an imaginary disciplinarian. Inspires complex questioning that helps students reach a deeper understanding of the content
