Quotes: "I became really convinced that the way that we allocate capital defines our future. Like minded." - Vanessa Barboni Hallik "If we had a choice, we would all choose another tomorrow than the one we're on course for. We would make different decisions and those different decisions would be available to us." - Vanessa Barboni Hallik "I deeply believe that for us to succeed in our mission of really modeling the future of fashion, we need to be incredibly commercially successful. And otherwise, everything that we're doing is just like cute, that's cute, that's nice. Small niche brands can do that, but these are not things that are applicable to the wider industry." - Vanessa Barboni Hallik This episode is sponsored by Medjet. Join Lori and her guest, Vanessa Barboni Hallik, as they discuss how entrepreneurs can incorporate philanthropy with sustainability in their businesses. Vanessa is the founder and CEO of Another Tomorrow, a B Corp Certified end-to-end sustainable design company. She talks about how her quest for her life's purpose led her to the world of fashion, where she uses sustainable and holistic practices as the foundation of her business. Stay tuned! Here are the things to expect in this episode: How Vanessa found her way into the fashion industry Another Tomorrow's sustainable and holistic approach to fashion Different ways of informing consumers about your philanthropic causes And much more! Another Another Tomorrow: I started Another Tomorrow in January 2018, while on a sabbatical from my former career in emerging markets finance. The original purpose of this break was to take a pause and reorient my career toward sustainable finance. However, as I began to dig deeper into the root problems of many of our global challenges, I was surprised and devastated by what I found in the apparel industry and its enormous impact on people, the environment, and animals. Clear information was difficult to come by, and the more I educated myself, finding clothing I felt good about became even harder. Realizing I couldn't just ‘unknow' what I now knew, I felt a responsibility and a purpose I couldn't ignore. My mission is to create a truly sustainable and compassionate company with a three-pronged approach of providing a foundational wardrobe of ethically and responsibly made clothing, education, and a platform for activism to amplify our collective voices. Another Tomorrow is the result of an incredible collaborative effort across our team and suppliers around the world. I'm so grateful for each of them and look forward to introducing you to everyone who has helped bring this vision to life. Connect with Vanessa!
Another Tomorrow (www.anothertomorrow.co) is a startup that blends luxury with sustainability. It is interesting because it has digital 'baked into' the DNA - from traceability and sourcing through selling and a second life for products. The founder, Vanessa Barboni Hallik, bring a mixture of passion, flair and analytical insight to the fashion industry and has positioned Another Tomorrow at the intersection of design, sustainability and technology. Vanessa was kind enough to meet with me in her Bleeker Street store in New York, and brought the brand, its story and direction of travel to life. We recorded at 7am but the film crew and leaf-blowers were out in force as they prepared for the day's filming of the Sex and the City series reboot. It was all happening, but nothing interrupted our conversation and the team at Spiritland cleaned the audio wonderfully! This interview is full of important insights on sourcing, culture, traceability, how to grow while maintaining focus, and remaining a 'point of discovery' for your customers. What does it take to walk away from a successful career in Investment banking? Today I'm speaking with Vanessa Barboni Hallik, founder and CEO of Another Tomorrow, a woman's sustainable fashion startup and what New York Times described as a ‘Brand as Ethically Minded as It Is Refined'. When Vanessa suddenly became aware of the reality on the ground in the clothing industry, there was no turning back. She needed to challenge the system. So, she created a clothing brand committed from the outset to sourcing responsibly grown, ethically manufactured materials, blending classic design with technology-enabled transparency, while building a platform for education, and advocacy and contributing to the circular economy. In this episode, we talk about her early life and how it shaped where she's at now. We talk about the significant impact that the clothing industry has on the environment, on humans and on animals. And then we talk about what Vanessa has done to respond to all of this. So sit back. Relax. And grab that favourite beverage. Or throw on those running shoes. And enjoy this episode. This week I have the incredible Vanessa Barboni Hallik on the show. If you're a long-time listener, then you know that I was a public defender. I was on a crusade to save the world. And I had bought into the paradigm that business was filled with greed and evil and that capitalism was ruining the world. While there is some truth to that in certain instances, Vanessa's story shows what is possible if we re-imagine how we run businesses. Her voice, and her brand, are exactly what we need to begin steering the ship towards more conscious consumerism. Vanessa served as managing director at Morgan Stanley for 15 years. She held several leadership roles in the emerging markets and institutional securities business. During her tenure, she tried to leave three separate times but was held back by the same fear and doubt that holds so many of us back. When she finally left, she pursued her interest in environmentalism, which lead her to discover the horrors happening within the fashion industry. That's when she decided to take matters into her own hands. Despite not having any experience in fashion, Vanessa saw the huge need for luxury apparel at a reasonable price that was made with sustainability in mind. She founded Another Tomorrow, an end-to-end sustainable apparel company, and is redefining how luxury fashion brands approach business by focusing on social and environmental good. Her story is inspiring for so many reasons! Listen to it and then check out the beautiful pieces at Another Tomorrow

Fashion is a notoriously damaging industry for the environment. "It was clear to me that the industry was a solid 7-10 years behind a number of other major consumer industries like food and CPG -- in owning up to the problems, putting in place solutions and educating the consumer," Another Tomorrow CEO Vanessa Barboni Hallik said on the Glossy Podcast. Another Tomorrow is a certified B corp, making it for-profit, but with a clear set of social responsibilities. Its industry peers in that regard include Patagonia and Allbirds. Each of the company's garments include a QR code that can be scanned for "the customer to see the entire provenance journey," Barboni Hallik said, adding that most customers use the function.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.04.282830v1?rss=1 Authors: Evangelisti, S., La Morgia, C., Testa, C., Manners, D. N., Brizi, L., Bianchini, C., Carbonelli, M., Barboni, P., Sadun, A. A., Tonon, C., Carelli, V., Vandewalle, G., Lodi, R. Abstract: Melanopsin retinal ganglion cells (mRGCs) are intrinsically photosensitive photoreceptors contributing to visual and non-image-forming functions of the eye. Isolating mRGC roles in humans is challenging, therefore mRGCs functions remains to be fully characterized. We explored mRGCs contribution to light-driven visual and cognitive brain responses in Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), given mRGC relative sparing in LHON. Twelve patients and twelve matched healthy controls (HC) participated in an fMRI protocol including visual and visual cognitive paradigms under blue (480nm) and red light (620nm). Higher occipital activation was found in response to sustained blue vs. red stimulation in LHON vs. HC. Similarly, brain responses to the executive task were larger under blue vs. red light in LHON over lateral prefrontal cortex. These findings are in line with LHON mRGCs relative sparing and support mRGCs contribution to non-visual and visual functions in humans, with potential implication for visual rehabilitation in optic neuropathy patients. The catalyst for change often arises when you recognize that your days don’t feel complete. For Vanessa Barboni Hallik, this realization was two-fold. When the former finance executive turned fashion founder made the entrepreneurial leap, she refocused her ambitions to not only reshape her individual career but to recalibrate the future of an industry that is overdue for change on a global scale. Enter her fashion brand, Another Tomorrow, which is the embodiment of Vanessa’s enduring commitment to fostering both environmental and social sustainability. While the road to sustainability is not always clear, Vanessa contends that leading with thoughtful storytelling and tapping into technology to create more transparency are critical details in building resonance with a new generation of interconnected consumers. And as we collectively work together to build a new and more inclusive world, Another Tomorrow has arrived just in time. In this interview, Vanessa shared more about her leap from finance to fashion, how she defines slow content, and why she believes bringing nuance back to storytelling is essential to making progress. This episode also opens with a story contributed by Liz Breuer of New Normal Bureau.

In this episode of Women Giving a Bleep, Tanyella Evans has a socially-distanced virtual conversation with Vanessa Barboni- Hallik, the founder and CEO of a ground-breaking sustainable fashion brand and activism platform, Another Tomorrow. After 15 years in finance, Vanessa took a step back to consider her next career steps, and what she learned about the detrimental impact of the fashion industry and lack of effective solutions led to her watershed moment for change. Highlighting the difference between social entrepreneurship and systems entrepreneurship, Vanessa’s solution is to build a completely new kind of fashion company that takes into account the entire ecosystem of quality, transparency, education and activism. Because each piece has its own digital identity, when it is returned to us for resale, we can scan the QR code and verify exactly which piece it was.The Circular Economy Model: for Another Tomorrow, the circular economy model means facilitating multiple lives for our products through resale. This has long been used by car companies (e.g. BMW Certified vehicles etc) and adopted by some of the market leaders (see Patagonia’s Worn Wear, a role model for us). Another Tomorrows platform is one of the first we know of where a luxury company is taking ownership of its own resale model. They have signaled this on this page of their site and will formally launch resale in early 2021. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Another Tomorrow launched in January, and already they've built an impressive criteria of sustainability standards to keep their supply chain ethical for human, animals, and the planet. Those are the three pillars of their business.Vanessa Barboni Hallik didn't start in fashion. She started in finance, but as she was researching more sustainable finance, she uncovered the huge disparities in the supply chain ethics of fashion fashion brands and luxury sustainable brands. The gap felt unsurmountable, but Another Tomorrow is taking on the challenge, backed by science, data, and an incredible eye for fashion design. In this episode, Vanessa shares how are patterns of apparel consumption can shift and she takes us into the depths of a carefully considered, ethical apparel supply chain.Go to the Lumi blog for links and images.
