This week on the Glossy Podcast, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska break down the latest in luxury earnings, pricing shifts and political pushback. Later in the episode, Zwieglinska speaks with Vanessa Barboni Hallik, founder and CEO of sustainable luxury fashion brand Another Tomorrow, about the brand's physical retail expansion and its approach to digital product passports. Barboni Hallik also discussed brand opportunities to scale circularity, during a conversation about Earth Week. In this week's news segment, Parisi and Zwieglinska discuss Kering's first-quarter earnings, which painted a concerning picture, with overall revenue down 14% and Gucci plunging 25%. They talk about the vulnerability of conglomerates overly reliant on a single label and the way macroeconomic tension between the U.S. and China is complicating luxury's recovery. In other news, Louis Vuitton quietly raised its U.S. prices by nearly 5%, a move likely linked to tariffs and growing production costs. And, amid the U.S. administration's ongoing efforts to dismantle DEI initiatives, major corporations and fashion brands are responding in different ways. While Target rolled back its diversity programs and saw 11 weeks of consecutive declines in foot traffic, companies like Levi's and Costco have stood firm on their initiatives — and in some cases, benefited from doing so. “50% of clothing that gets created ends up in a landfill in the first year. When we're using way too much resource in the first place, the fact that half of that is going directly to landfill in the first year is insane. And then, what actually makes it into our closets, we wear about 20% of on a trailing 12 month basis. So if you think about just the actual amount of utility that we get out of this massive system is insane. And that's just the waste part of it.” – Vanessa Barboni Hallik Vanessa Barboni Hallik is the founder and CEO of Another Tomorrow, a luxury brand that is doing fashion better. Much much better. They're a B Corp Certified end-to-end sustainable design company with a mission to model a new future for fashion with a fully digitized product eco-system delivering technology-enabled transparency and authenticated recommerce. Enjoy this video podcast on Spotify and Youtube! According to Vanessa Barboni Hallik, the visionary behind sustainable luxury fashion brand Another Tomorrow, it was all a "beautiful accident." After taking a sabbatical from her finance career in 2018, Vanessa found herself turning inward, which she now describes as a homecoming journey back to herself and her late mother. Finding no truly sustainable fashion pieces, Vanessa embarked on a journey to start a luxury brand rooted in transparency and care for animal, environmental, and human welfare. Through a farm-to-closet supply chain, Vanessa has developed a new model for sustainable fashion that enables the consumer to connect with the piece's origin story. As she works towards her vision of a better tomorrow, Vanessa looks for patterns of resilience in running a sustainable fashion brand. Thanks for listening! Debunking the sustainability vs. profitability myth. Tune in for insights on overcoming obstacles and fostering growth. Quotes: "I became really convinced that the way that we allocate capital defines our future. Like minded." - Vanessa Barboni Hallik "If we had a choice, we would all choose another tomorrow than the one we're on course for. We would make different decisions and those different decisions would be available to us." - Vanessa Barboni Hallik "I deeply believe that for us to succeed in our mission of really modeling the future of fashion, we need to be incredibly commercially successful. And otherwise, everything that we're doing is just like cute, that's cute, that's nice. Small niche brands can do that, but these are not things that are applicable to the wider industry." - Vanessa Barboni Hallik This episode is sponsored by Medjet. Hello, beautiful listeners and travelers of the cosmic tapestry. We've have had some relaxing times while wandering around the peaceful forests of aural canyons. We've dipped our toes into a calm, yet vibrant, stream of brilliantly blissful moments. There comes a time when the spacecraft must align the controls for yet another destination in search of the vivid beauty from echoing dreams. While it's blissfully effortless to lay in the pasture of calm, pillowy thoughts and star gaze while recalling worlds unique to ourselves, we have to slowly and softly uproot ourselves in effort to keep on truckin'. This minor disruption is but a very momentary displacement into yet another realm of as-of-yet unseen and unfelt bliss. Our goal is to seek the optimal oasis. All that I ask of you, dear listener, is to ensure that your belt buckle is firmly fastened for another journey into the unknown. Taking mental snapshots of comet tails and celestial dust is highly recommended as we drift sweetly into our new destination. Save these snapshots within your scrapbook of dreams. Each new endeavor we seek to undertake requires effort, and each effort requires resources and creative fuel. Sure, you could apply minimal effort and coast on closing your eyes tightly and shaking your head for 10 seconds to bring yourself out of a slump. But that sort of solution is not a problem solver at all. Rather, it is but a mere distraction like shaking a jar of wasps and expecting them to behave. Nay, dear listener, your reset and expulsion into the realm of rejuvenation requires a recoating of your grey matter with the sweet nectar of sound and color. This journey is designed to do just that. Feel the tingling sensation of new synapses awakening, old neurons developing fresh pathways, and a soulful re-awakening. Here, you will come to realize that there are indeed more peaceful pastures to explore and camp at. Spaceman's Transmissions is devoted to ensuring that your flight there is brewed with equal parts beauty, intensity, comfort, and solace. You have our guarantee or your money back. So, drift into the spacecraft with your boy Tonepoet at the helm, and slowly (snail's pace) buckle yourself into your dream pod for an expedition through the cosmos. Together, we'll all make the journey to another tomorrow and seek to optimize ourselves by letting go of the troubled baggage and stocking up on positive atmospheric transmissions. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane. Today, we interview Vanessa Barboni Hallik, Founder & CEO of Another Tomorrow. Another Tomorrow launched in January 2020 and are an end-to-end sustainable luxury ready-to-wear collection and platform. They have a transparency initiative that will ensure each of its products, particularly its articles of clothing, come with a tag equipped with a QR code. This QR code links customers to a product ID page that offers transparency on the history of the product. This includes the manufacturing location, shipping process, material composition, and more. Another Tomorrow believes that transparency is key in the fashion industry, and that this partnership is an excellent way to both gain trust with customers and inform them of its business practices. Another Tomorrow also launched a resale program, aimed at, in part, at reducing production of new clothes, which from their point of view, is the only way that resale can help fashion to reduce its overall environmental footprint. We discussed: * What she's grateful for * Her transition from Financier to Fashion * Why fashion was ripe for transformation * Fashion's problems the sustainability * Values that guide the brand: Animal, Human, & Environmental Welfare * Transparency and their Providence Journey * Treating Clothing as an Asset * Embracing Re-commerce as a way to produce less * A breakdown of materials used * Their Fashion * And the future of Another Tomororw Join Ramon Vela and Vanessa Barboni Hallik as we break down the inside story of Another Tomorrow on The Story of a Brand. In this episode of the RETHINK Retail Podcast, guest host and Top Retail Influencer Liza Amlani sits down with Vanessa Barboni Hallik, CEO of Another Tomorrow. Vanessa is the founder and CEO of Another Tomorrow, a sustainable luxury fashion brand that provides complete tech-enabled supply chain transparency and embedded resale. Prior to founding Another Tomorrow, Vanessa served as a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. For Vanessa, founding Another Tomorrow is kind of a homecoming. Growing up in the Midwest, she was really inspired by this idea of problem solving at the intersection of disciplines. After her time pursuing a degree in energy and environmental policy, Vanessa started putting her time and energy in a direction that was going to be relevant for the future that the world needed to take—never expecting to land in the fashion world. Once spotting the white space in the industry, Another Tomorrow was built on the principles of accessible luxury. Listen in as we dive into Another Tomorrow's brand mission and how they value transparency and sustainability while making luxury retail accessible. - - - - - - Host: Top Retail Influencer Liza Amlani Produced by Gabriella Bock
My guest today is Amber Valletta, supermodel, actress, and climate activist. Amber works with several NGOs, serves as British Vogue's Contributing Sustainability Editor, and does eco-consulting for brands such as Karl Lagerfeld. This spring, the third Karl Lagerfeld Amber Valletta collection will drop in stores around the world, and includes stylish, environmentally conscious ready-to-wear, such as biker jackets, little black dresses, and suits, as well as accessories. And she takes her activism seriously, participating in Jane Fonda's Fire Drill Friday protests in Washington and Los Angeles, and even getting arrested for the cause. This activism is deeply embedded in Amber—her mother successfully protested against the construction of a nuclear power plant near their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when Amber was a child. Amber watched and learned.I like how Amber is trying to push fashion towards more sustainable practices from the inside—as her friend Stella McCartney says, “Infiltrating from within.” As the Fall/Winter 23-24 fashion shows unfurl in Paris this week—with Amber walking in several of them, including such eco-conscious brands as Stella McCartney and Chloé—I thought it seemed like the perfect time to have her on the podcast. Join Lori and her guest, Vanessa Barboni Hallik, as they discuss how entrepreneurs can incorporate philanthropy with sustainability in their businesses. Vanessa is the founder and CEO of Another Tomorrow, a B Corp Certified end-to-end sustainable design company. She talks about how her quest for her life's purpose led her to the world of fashion, where she uses sustainable and holistic practices as the foundation of her business. Stay tuned! Here are the things to expect in this episode: How Vanessa found her way into the fashion industry Another Tomorrow's sustainable and holistic approach to fashion Different ways of informing consumers about your philanthropic causes And much more! Another Another Tomorrow: I started Another Tomorrow in January 2018, while on a sabbatical from my former career in emerging markets finance. The original purpose of this break was to take a pause and reorient my career toward sustainable finance. However, as I began to dig deeper into the root problems of many of our global challenges, I was surprised and devastated by what I found in the apparel industry and its enormous impact on people, the environment, and animals. Clear information was difficult to come by, and the more I educated myself, finding clothing I felt good about became even harder. Realizing I couldn't just ‘unknow' what I now knew, I felt a responsibility and a purpose I couldn't ignore. My mission is to create a truly sustainable and compassionate company with a three-pronged approach of providing a foundational wardrobe of ethically and responsibly made clothing, education, and a platform for activism to amplify our collective voices. Another Tomorrow is the result of an incredible collaborative effort across our team and suppliers around the world. My guest today on the Green Dream is Lily Cole, British model-turned-environmentalist and author of https://www.lilycole.com/who-cares-wins-the-book (Who Cares Wins: How to Protect the Planet You Love), an eye-opening book about climate change. Lily began modeling twenty years ago and has been named “Model of the Year” and one of the top 30 models of the 2000s. When Lily was 17, she modeled for a jewelry company that was later accused of exploiting local Bushmen with its diamond mining practices. Lily traveled to Botswana to understand the situation, and she was so moved by what she saw, she helped the Bushmen export their own jewelry and keep the profits. This was her first campaign to help the planet and humanity, and it put her on the path toward activism. Since then, she has woven together her modeling and climate awareness work. Following the publication of her book, Lily launched a podcast of her own, also called https://www.lilycole.com/podcast (Who Cares Wins). On it, she discusses climate solutions with guests such as Chelsea Clinton, David Attenborough, and Elon Musk. I heard Lily speak at the TED Countdown Summit in Edinburgh last year, during a dinner she hosted at the botanical gardens for conference attendees, and was truly moved by her passion for climate reforms. Today I'm in conversation with an old friend, King of Vintage Couture Cameron Silver, the founder and owner of https://decadesinc.com (Decades), a top vintage couture boutique in West Hollywood, California. Born and raised in Beverly Hills, Cameron has great flair, and seems to know everyone who's anyone. As he writes in https://www.amazon.com/Decades-Century-Fashion-Cameron-Silver/dp/159691663X (Decades: A Century in Fashion), his gorgeous coffee table book published in 2012 by Bloomsbury, he embarked “on a career as a purveyor of only the finest pre-worn clothing.” In 1997, he opened Decades in a 1926 Art Deco building on Melrose Avenue. “I had no experience managing a business, and no real education in fashion, other than as a consumer,” Cameron wrote in his book. “But I knew that I wanted to introduce a new world of customers to vintage. Before purchasing any single piece, I would always ask myself, ‘Is it modern?'” If you go in his store, or take a look on his e-tailing site DecadesInc.com, you'll see the answer is always yes. Vanessa Barboni Halik gave up a successful career on Wall Street to pursue a new calling -- pioneering sustainability in the fashion industry through her womenswear collection, Another Tomorrow. In this episode, Vanessa's testimony on life and loss shed light on her personal strength, plus her keen insights into what we should be asking about the products we consume showcase her powerful purpose.
A large portion of a garment's environmental footprint is determined at the raw material level, so for many designers and brands, the easiest first step on their sustainability journey is to begin by replacing existing materials with sustainable alternatives. However, sustainable material sourcing is no easy task. Whether plant-based, animal-based or synthetic manmade fiber, every material choice comes with trade-offs. The extraction, processing, and manufacturing of materials is inherently accompanied by challenges that can have short-term and long-term implications on people and the planet. Whether a fiber is better or worse depends on the numerous factors influencing the life cycle of fabric – from the cultivation of the crop through to processing, assembly, transportation, use, and the subsequent disposal of the garment by the consumer. Adding another layer of complexity, just like "sustainability" can mean many different things depending on personal ethos, the same can be said for determining sustainable materials. A sustainable material could refer to it containing no animal byproducts, or it can mean no plastic (not even recycled). It could be defined as less water use, fewer carbon emissions, or fewer chemicals. How should brands approach material sustainability with so many contradicting and differing perspectives? What makes a sustainable material? What questions should brands ask when determining what materials to use? How should data be used to compare and contrast materials? What is the role of third-party ranking systems and certifications? During the 2022 Sustainable Fashion Forum, Dr. Amanda Parkes, Chief Innovation Officer at PANGAIA, Diana Rosenberg, Sr. Manager, Product Sustainability at GAP Inc, Adam Taubenfligel, Creative Director at Triarchy Denim, and Tara St James, Founder of Re:Source(d) and Vice President of Supply Chain and Sustainability at Another Tomorrow, hit the SFF digital mainstage for an industry roundtable moderated by Jasmin Malik Chua, Sourcing Journal's Sourcing and Labor Editor, exploring the nuances layers of material sustainability.

Today I am extremely excited to have on a woman who is pushing the boundaries of what sustainable fashion can look like, having left a career in finance behind to start a company she believed needed to be the future of fashion. That would be Vanessa Borboni Hallik of the ethical luxury brand, Another Tomorrow. We talk with Vanessa about her incredible journey starting Another Tomorrow in January 2018, while she was on a sabbatical from her former career in emerging markets finance. Taking time to learn about global issues she was both surprised and devastated by what she found in the apparel industry and its enormous impact on people, the environment, and animals. She made it a mission to start a fashion line doing things right and pushing boundaries on what would be possible within sustainability, and today I am thrilled to take you all on that journey with her. Now over to my conversation with the amazing Vanessa. We also want to say a big thank you to Seela Activewear who has made today's episode possible and who's incredible plant based, luxury sportswear aligns very well with Vanessa's conversation today that technology can truly be used for good and progress when it comes to the fashion industry. Launched in 2020 by Ida Skarp in Zürich, Seela Studio encourages women to strengthen their bodies and minds with clean, plant based activewear products.Combining modern science with refined design, Seela develops thoughtful essentials for longevity that are at one with nature using an innovative, all plant based fabric. Instead of using synthetic fibres which are produced from petroleum or gas, all Seela garments are made from castor oil, which is a multi-purpose vegetable oil that people have used for thousands of years for its natural health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory, bacteria-fighting and moisturising properties. What drives Seela is to create activewear that supports – rather than damages – the natural functions of your body and cares for the world in which we all enjoy our workouts. From limiting any chemical use to recycling water in their production process to choosing biodegradable materials, it's all about what's best for you and the planet. On top of being one of the first plant based activewear companies, Seela are working with solar-powered factories, reusing water during the washing process, using a dyeing process with low water and energy consumption and sourcing and producing all materials – packaging included – from within Europe. My guest today is Hannah Elliott, the automobile writer for Bloomberg Businessweek, based in America's ultimate driving city, Los Angeles. These days, Hannah finds herself mostly writing about Electric Vehicles, or EVs as they say in the automobile industry. So we talk about that—particularly why they are all so ugly. We also look at what's going to happen to the vintage car market once cities ban gas-powered automobiles. Tata and Henry Harper founded Tata Harper Skincare on their 1,200 acre organic farm in the Champlain Valley of Vermont in 2010. Both born in Baranquilla, Colombia, Tata and Henry met at Tata's high school reunion. After stints in Miami and NYC they relocated to Vermont to raise their children and have a peaceful escape from the busy city life. Shortly after the move, Tata's stepfather was diagnosed with cancer. Tata and Henry worked together to help him change his lifestyle following his diagnosis. In doing so, they learned that many toxic and harmful ingredients were lurking in their everyday products – even those that were luxury and claimed to be all natural. They recognized the ultimate irony in this –after all, isn't health the ultimate luxury? The two struck out on a journey to solve this problem and spent 5 years to research and develop what would become the very first Tata Harper product, one that delivered efficacious results and a luxury experience without having to compromise your health. Since inception, Tata and Henry have never wavered from their mission, to create a brand that epitomized beauty made without compromise. From their unique approach to formulation, grounded in the philosophy that complexity equals efficacy and more ingredients equal more results, to the completely vertical integration with zero shortcuts or outsourcing that now defines the farm-to-face movement, the two have pioneered what truly is the next generation of beauty. One that is not just natural and non-toxic, but one that delivers exponentially more results than ever before. Cora and Tata discuss the issues within conventional skincare, how her love of farming has evolved, and why sustainability in every aspect of our lives is more important than ever before! Another Tomorrow (www.anothertomorrow.co) is a startup that blends luxury with sustainability. It is interesting because it has digital 'baked into' the DNA - from traceability and sourcing through selling and a second life for products. The founder, Vanessa Barboni Hallik, bring a mixture of passion, flair and analytical insight to the fashion industry and has positioned Another Tomorrow at the intersection of design, sustainability and technology. Vanessa was kind enough to meet with me in her Bleeker Street store in New York, and brought the brand, its story and direction of travel to life. We recorded at 7am but the film crew and leaf-blowers were out in force as they prepared for the day's filming of the Sex and the City series reboot. It was all happening, but nothing interrupted our conversation and the team at Spiritland cleaned the audio wonderfully! This interview is full of important insights on sourcing, culture, traceability, how to grow while maintaining focus, and remaining a 'point of discovery' for your customers. What if superior clothing retained re-sale value enough to justify a reach purchase, knowing you'd be able to recoup a hefty sum when you were ready to move on? We think that way about cars, why not suits? Why not indeed. Vanessa, CEO and founder of Another Tomorrow joins us to discuss how we can shift our thinking about clothes from a disposable commodity to a durable asset class. Another Tomorrow is built on the premise that the best products are crafted with care, intention and integrity. Their garments are sourced back to the farm, with providence clearly - and proudly- delineated through their store. In order to reveal this inherent value to the customer they've embedded trackable QR codes into select garments affording consumers the ability to look beyond the physical product into the story about who made it, how the fibers were sourced and what that means for understanding the overall environmental impact of their purchase. That QR code serves another purpose: it tags the garment as authentic, so at re-sale the buyer knows that their purchase is the real deal. This isn't a new concept- auction houses have long dealt in the nebulous arena of provenance with everything from first growth vintage wine to antique furniture. Vanessa and her team at Another Tomorrow have applied this philosophy to clothes, because we should care about the things we buy, where they came from, what they stand for, and how our decisions in purchasing them will impact the future. Nothing is too small; saving the planet can start with socks, it all counts.

What does it take to walk away from a successful career in Investment banking? Today I'm speaking with Vanessa Barboni Hallik, founder and CEO of Another Tomorrow, a woman's sustainable fashion startup and what New York Times described as a ‘Brand as Ethically Minded as It Is Refined'. So, she created a clothing brand committed from the outset to sourcing responsibly grown, ethically manufactured materials, blending classic design with technology-enabled transparency, while building a platform for education, and advocacy and contributing to the circular economy. In this episode, we talk about her early life and how it shaped where she's at now. We talk about the significant impact that the clothing industry has on the environment, on humans and on animals. And then we talk about what Vanessa has done to respond to all of this. So sit back. Relax. And grab that favourite beverage. Or throw on those running shoes. And enjoy this episode. Fashion is a notoriously damaging industry for the environment. "It was clear to me that the industry was a solid 7-10 years behind a number of other major consumer industries like food and CPG -- in owning up to the problems, putting in place solutions and educating the consumer," Another Tomorrow CEO Vanessa Barboni Hallik said on the Glossy Podcast. Another Tomorrow is a certified B corp, making it for-profit, but with a clear set of social responsibilities. Its industry peers in that regard include Patagonia and Allbirds. Each of the company's garments include a QR code that can be scanned for "the customer to see the entire provenance journey," Barboni Hallik said, adding that most customers use the function.
Vanessa Barboni Hallik left a successful career in finance to launch her own brand of sustainable luxury garments, Another Tomorrow, with every decision guided by a value system based on three pillars: human, animal, and environmental welfare.
