A mapped-out shake-up of television and screen production legislation is garnering overwhelming support. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage has laid out five proposals to combat declining viewership and ad revenue in light of the global shift to streaming. Merging the Film Commission with NZ on Air and requiring offshore platforms to invest in more local content are among the suggestions. South Pacific Pictures Managing Director Andrew Szusterman told Mike Hosking the recommendations are on the money. The Media and Communications Minister says cutting funding for NZ on Air and the Film Commission isn't on the table. The Government is asking for feedback on five proposals, aiming to help local media go up against international competitors. One includes merging the Commission and NZ on Air. Paul Goldsmith says the two categories are becoming far less distinct - and a merger could even give both more funds. "Rather than having two organisations doling it out - if you had one, that could be a more efficient way of doing it. The Screen Producers guild —SPADA— says overall, it's pleased with proposed changes for media. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage has released a discussion document with five proposals. They include the possibility of requiring platforms to invest more in local content and a suggestion New Zealand on Air and the Film Commission could be merged. SPADA President Irene Gardiner told Francesca Rudkin the document's considered and detailed. She says it shows the Ministry's listened to what they're saying and has taken it on board. The bodies of Pastor Weere Mukisa, his 25-year-old wife, Annet Namugaya, and their two daughters, 7-year-old Judith and 4-year-old Sylvia, were found consumed in a fire set in the early morning hours of October 13th. The pastor had been threatened by local Muslims for evangelizing among the local Muslim population. The pastor's brother said, “When the three young Muslims converted to Christ, my brother started receiving threatening messages that he should stop any contact with the three converts, and that the act committed is against the teaching of Islam to not join the religion of infidels.” Canadian government persecuting 74 Amish In other news, the Canadian government is persecuting 74 members of the Amish community in Ontario for their failure to download a Covid-19 app despite the fact they have no access to smart phones. The government has also placed liens on the Amish farms for those incapable of paying the fines.  Russia has gained control of Donetsk, Ukraine The Russian army has gained control of 478 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in the ongoing war, mostly in the Donetsk region in the month of October. A recent survey produced by Harris X poll found that 68% of Americans over 65 years of age are bothered by the public use of profanity, and only 26% of 18- to 35-year-olds are bothered by it. An Amazon MGM Studios production is coming to Aotearoa, with Auckland announced as the primary shooting location for the star-studded project.  The Wrecking Crew will be directed by award-winning film-maker Ángel Manuel Soto and feature an impressive cast including Aquaman's Jason Momoa, Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista, and New Zealand's own Temuera Morrison and Frankie Adams.  Philippa Mossman, Head of International Attraction and Marketing for the NZ Film Commission, told Mike Hosking the Commission does everything they can to incentivise filming in New Zealand.  She said the productions offer significant benefits in the short periods of time they film, including the huge injection of foreign money into the country, region, or community, that's spent on workers or businesses.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Break 1: KIA MOG   STORY 1: Man accused of killing pregnant ex-girlfriend released on bond Jesus Monroy, a 20-year-old Snellville man, was released on $56,000 bond after being charged with the murder of his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, Mia Campos, and her unborn child. Superior Court Judge Karen Beyers set the bond, which led to Monroy's release early Thursday. He faces charges including malice murder, feticide, and aggravated assault related to Campos' death on July 14. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed disappointment with the bond decision, citing the severity of the crime and the loss of both mother and child. Monroy's defense argued for bond, citing his lack of prior convictions and offering conditions like house arrest and GPS monitoring. STORY 2:  Gwinnett Sheriff Makes 47 Arrests in Surenos Gang Investigation The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office announced 47 arrests connected to the Surenos gang after a nine-month investigation. The probe, which involved surveillance, undercover operations, and collaboration with various agencies, revealed the gang's ties to Mexican drug cartels and their activities in firearm and narcotics trafficking. Authorities seized over $300,000 in cash, 14 firearms, nearly 200 kilos of methamphetamine, 37 kilos of cocaine, and 300 fentanyl pills. Charges include narcotics trafficking, illegal firearm possession, and racketeering. The investigation involved numerous partner agencies and underscores the ongoing effort to combat violent drug trafficking in the community. STORY 3:  Lawrenceville Teen Earns Girl Scout Gold Award By Helping Pediatric Patients Sarah Gruber, a Lawrenceville Girl Scout, used her Girl Scout Gold Award project to aid hospitalized children by donating 17 handmade IV lily pads to Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children's Hospital in Memphis. These lily pads, which she designed and crafted over 500 hours, help pediatric patients move more easily with their IVs. Gruber also created 525 coloring kits for the children. Her project not only supports the hospital but also teaches other teens to replicate the effort in their communities. The Gold Award honors Scouts who create impactful, sustainable projects, and Gruber's work will enhance the hospital experience for young patients. Robert F.
