E invece oggi siamo qui, in un mondo che brucia ed è nuovamente dominato da logiche imperiali. Che Russia e Cina si muovessero in questa direzione era chiaro da tempo: la vera novità, dirompente e inattesa, sono gli Stati Uniti di Trump, che hanno sconvolto dall'interno l'ordine liberale internazionale che per primi avevano contribuito a costruire. Se noi abbiamo potuto vivere la nostra durevole pace è anche perché c'erano loro a garantirla, ma ora il primo ministro canadese lo ha detto con parole nette: quella in atto “non è una transizione, è una rottura”. Attingendo alla potente metafora del “modello di Schweller” queste pagine ci raccontano come la superpotenza americana abbia abbandonato il ruolo del leone che veglia sulla foresta per tornare a vestire quello di lupo affamato in un mondo popolato di altri lupi e di sciacalli pronti a seguirli. In questo scenario, qual è il ruolo degli agnelli che ancora credono nella democrazia? Vittorio Emanuele Parsi ce lo spiega con lucidità e senza sconti, indicando con altrettanta chiarezza a quale conseguenza andremo incontro se non sapremo reagire: la servitù. Questo libro non vuole essere un requiem per le nostre democrazie. Piuttosto, Parsi ci indica cosa possiamo fare per difendere la libertà che abbiamo ereditato dai nostri genitori e dai nostri nonni. La strada esiste. Ma richiede coraggio, onestà, e la capacità di perseguire una via difficile: quella di essere pacifici, ma non imbelli.
