This evening we discuss how a minor Rabbinic ruling on Bentching (saying Birkat HaMazon or grace after meals) gives us a new and much better way of looking at the world, earning us a special measure of God's grace. We cite the prophecy of Isaiah (Yishayahu HaNavi) that God will rebuild the ruined places of Israel, and describe how this has come true in our day at the magnificent Hurva Synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem. I share my unforgettable experience being there on Yom HaAtzmaut, and praying the words of Hallel with two meanings to each line. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. We take great pleasure in welcoming everyone with a warm smile, while sharing inspiration through prayer, study, and friendship. We discuss the ruling of the Rama who holds that ideally the requirement to bentch is only fully fulfilled when a person has drunken during a meal (if they were thirsty). We then turn to the proper way to respond to a zimun if you have not eaten anything.
We start our discussion of the zimun said before the mitzvah of birchat hamazon and its correct text.
The who, what, where, when, and why of birkat hamazon / bentching.
We discuss the importance of mentioning certain phrases in birchat hamazon and also the requirement to answer amen after the 3rd bracha - the rebuilding of Jerusalem. This bracha concludes the 3rd of the biblically ordained brachot.
Being Yotzei Someone Else In Bentching [Zimun 2 - Siman 193 Sif 1a]
We discuss how long after one has eaten must one still bentch and also the amount of bread required to be eaten to obligate birchat hamazon.
We discuss the requirement to be seated during birchat hamazon and some say for al hamichya and to do so with the same level of reverence one shows during the shemona esrei.
We examine the once prevalent custom for a single person to lead birchat hamozon and for others to listen carefully and answer amen. This has been replaced in our time with each person bentching by themselves.
We discuss the correct holding of the wine cup for bentching and also whether a hat a jacket need to be worn during bentching.
The who, what, where, when, and why of birkat hamazon / bentching.
