Usually, in the Jewish calendar and in the Jewish canon, redemption comes top down. In the Exodus story, God brings about redemption with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, with ten plagues and signs and wonders. In the creation of the State of Israel that we marked with Yom Haatzmaut this week, the Israel Defense Forces brings about the creation and the continued existence of the Jewish state. Tomorrow morning we are going to examine an odd redemption story. Redemption comes not from God, kings, prophets, leaders, or armies, but from four lepers whose names we do not even know. The story, from 2 Kings 7, takes place during war. The Northern Kingdom of Israel was attacked by Aram, that had laid siege to it. There was no food. People were starving. It was as grim as grim could be. In that dark time, four lepers, who are outside the gates of the city, who are not welcome in the city, who have no prospects, bring salvation to Israel. We will do a close textual read of an odd redemption story for what it teaches us about us now.

The Gemara cites Vayikra 27:11 to teach that blemished animals are called impure. Although the verse refers to "impure animals," there is a different verse (Vayikra 27:27) that explains that impure animals be redeemed; therefore, the first verse must refer specifically to blemished animals.  Shmuel maintains that items consecrated for their value can be redeemed even if they are unblemished. Two difficulties are raised against Shmuel - one by Rav Huna bar Manoach from our Mishna and another by Rav Papa from a braita. Both are resolved by distinguishing between common items and rare items suitable for Temple use; the Sages prohibited the redemption of rare items to avoid a shortage in the Temple. Several rabbis disagree with Shmuel, holding that items dedicated for their value cannot be redeemed if they are pure. There are two versions of Rabbi Oshaya's position regarding whether he agreed with Shmuel. A difficulty is raised against the version that he permitted their redemption, but it is ultimately resolved.

Today is Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers. Israel commemorates its fallen with an intensity that is difficult to fully grasp from the outside - a national experience of grief, gratitude, and memory that touches every life. Few works capture this more powerfully than “The Silver Platter” by Natan Alterman. Each time I read it, I am moved to tears of gratitude and awe for the young men and women who gave - and continue to give - their lives so that the State of Israel can not only endure, but flourish. Without their sacrifice, Israel would not exist. The transition from Yom HaZikaron immediately into Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, is not incidental. It is designed to allow us to experience and appreciate the loss and the joy, the dark and the light, the pain and the beauty which coexist for Israel at every moment. Today asks something of us: to feel both. To carry the weight of what has been lost, and at the same time, to recognize the miracle that continues because of it. Yom HaAtzmaut | Psalm 126: BeShuv Hashem et Shivat Tzion, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Why are we described as "like dreamers" upon the return to ציון?  Since those miraculous days of 1948, there have been several proposals to amend the National Anthem with the recitation of Psalm 126 - בשוב ה' את שיבת ציון; famously, Menachem Begin read the entire Psalm in the Rose Garden before signing the Camp David Accords in 1979. The sense of seeing ancient prophecies fulfilled in our day and before our eyes is a powerful one, and this psalm uniquely captures that feeling of הגדיל ה' לעשות עמנו. We examine the psalm, first discussing the issue of authorship and period of the composition of Tehillim and then the method used to study Biblical poetry, specifically Tehillim. ¿Un Kabalat Shabbat multitudinario en el puerto de Tel Aviv? ¿Una Havdalá entre Yom HaZikaron y Yom HaAtzmaut? ¿Poemas israelíes contemporáneos como parte de la liturgia? En este fascinante episodio conversamos con el rabino Esteban Gottfried sobre su particular comunidad en Israel. Nacido en Argentina y criado en el judaísmo conservador e innovador de Bet El, hizo Aliá hace más de 40 años, pero sintió que algo le faltaba en el panorama religioso israelí. No encontraba una comunidad que se asemejara a la que había conocido en su infancia. Ni el mundo secular ni el ortodoxo le hablaban, y las comunidades reformistas y conservadoras en Israel tampoco lo convocaban. Por ello, hace 20 años fundó Beit Tefila Israeli, un "laboratorio", como él lo llama, para combinar el judaísmo y la liturgia tradicional con melodías y textos que resuenan con el israelí secular.
