Steve Buzzard didn't want to work for Oklahoma State. In fact, when he moved to Stillwater from Talequah for the job he cried half the trip. That was in 1983. Forty years later, and Buzzard can't imagine living anywhere else. Buzzard spent the first half of his four-decade career working as a Sports Information Director. He was there for Cowboy Football's first 10-2 season. He knew Mike Gundy the quarterback before he was ever Mike Gundy the head coach. He watched from the sideline as Barry Sanders singlehandedly changed college football. Buzzard witnessed Eddie Sutton lead the Pokes to the Final Four. He remembers the life changing phone call from January 2001 and will always Remember the Ten. Buzzard's memories of Oklahoma State are endless. The talent he saw was incomparable. The friendships he made were priceless.
He is entering his eighth year as Assistant Baseball Coach at DeMatha Catholic High School near Washington, DC, having been the freshman head coach for two of his years there. He has also worked as Sports Information Director at Catholic University, which is also near our nation's capital. His career in sports has also included work as a journalist, covering NBA games in DC. More recently, he coached T-Ball for eight years, coached 10-and-under basketball, and along the way picked up a Coach of the Year honor. This all followed his having been a student-athlete back in his high school days. Listen for the physical challenge he overcame to play four different sports!

Dave Rebstock was Morningside's longtime Sports Information Director before he suddenly passed away in the summer of 2018. To make progress towards a common goal communication is key. Especially when it comes to trust in government. According to the Pew Research Center: Only two-in-ten Americans say they trust the government in Washington to do what is right “just about always” (2%) or “most of the time” (19%). Trust in the government has declined somewhat since last year, when 24% said they could trust the government at least most of the time. One person who is working extremely hard to change such a narrative is Derek Diesner. He currently serves as the Media Relations & Communications Coordinator with the city of Glendale Arizona. He says the key to public trust is communication and building positive and sustainable relationships. Prior to his current role, Diesner served as the Coordinator of Communications at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Avondale. He also worked at Mesa Community College as the Sports Information Specialist and with the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) as the Social Media Coordinator. Prior to joining Mesa Community College, Diesner worked at The Western Journal as their Community Manager. Prior to TWJ, Diesner served as the Parish Communications Coordinator at St. Helen Roman Catholic Parish in Glendale, Arizona. Before joining the Church, Diesner served as the Sports Information Director at OUAZ. He had previously served in the same capacity at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, after spending time as the SID at Arizona Christian University in Phoenix and at Arizona Western College in Yuma. Diesner graduated from Western Illinois University in May of 2010. Derek has worked in radio, minor league baseball, and college athletics in Arkansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas, South Carolina, and now Arizona. He joined me this week to have an in-depth conversation about building relationships and effective communication in government and beyond. Purposeful storytelling is the key ingredient to developing a sales strategy. You have a product or service that you want to sell to customers. People love a good story. So how do you craft what people want to hear that connects to you and your business? How was the company started? Who are some of the customers? What heartwarming and inspiring stories can you associate with the business? Purposeful storytelling can help you sell yourself. Learn more about Jim DeLorenzo's storytelling process in this episode of Sales Reinvented! Outline of This Episode [0:49] Why is storytelling an important skill to possess? [2:21] The key to becoming a great storyteller [4:07] Craft stories that stay “top of heart” [5:56] The attributes of a great storyteller [8:20] A unique way to improve storytelling [10:43] Top 3 storytelling dos and don'ts [13:43] Creativity is key to purposeful stories Can you become a gifted storyteller? Storytelling is something that must be practiced over and over. Jim works with numerous entrepreneurs in startup businesses. As an owner or operator, you are laser-focused on building your business. You work hard on a skillset to make sure your business reflects what you want it to. Jim helps entrepreneurs tell their stories. So how did he master purposeful storytelling? He reads as much as he can about an industry or subject to see different storytelling techniques. He watches newscasts and listens to podcasts to see and hear how stories are being told. Jim writes something every day. He practices his skills every day and brings them to his clients who do the same. Craft stories that stay “top of heart” Startups are often selling interesting and compelling products or services. How will it change someone's life for the better? How will it change an industry? How will it change an experience for the better? To tell those purposeful stories for startups, Jim investigates what the client is doing. He'll interview their customers and the people behind the scenes. Jim looks for a heartwarming story that will stay “top of heart.” Once you impact someone on the heart level, the head follows. So he advises salespeople to look for compelling, interesting, and heartwarming stories—stories with a purpose. A unique way to improve purposeful storytelling When Jim is conducting media or public speaking training, he has his clients watch interviews. How do people present themselves? How do they tell their stories? Find the people who tell stories well and emulate them—and learn from those who don't. You can see if people are comfortable and to the point. Jim also recommends reading stories, articles, and books to see how different people tell their stories. Jim drew inspiration from Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show. Carson was always comfortable on camera and people reacted positively to him. Jim incorporated that into his career. What are Jim's storytelling dos and don'ts? Listen to find out! Creativity is key to purposeful stories When Jim was the Sports Information Director at Villanova University, the football team was gearing up for a media day. Jim sent notices out to local media about the date. No one showed up. Jim couldn't figure out why. So Jim started calling different outlets to gather information. Sadly, he found out that the Eagles had scheduled a press conference at the same time. Naturally, everyone went there. But Jim still needed someone to run a story about the Villanova football team. So he spoke to the Sports Director at Channel 6 and asked what he could do to get him out to run a story. It hit Jim: What if he had the Sports Director run plays with the team as the quarterback? The Sports Director thought it was a spectacular idea and agreed to do it the following week. The Sports Director ran plays with the football team and aired the whole segment on all four of their newscasts. It garnered a lot of attention. The next day, the rest of the local media called Jim, clamoring to run a story. You have to be creative to tell a story with purpose. You have to question what you need to do to get someone to listen to your story. There have been only four sports information director's in the history of Iowa athletics, dating back to 1924. Eric Wilson was the first and spent 44 years in the main chair. Wilson was an Iowa track star as a student and qualified for the 1924 Olympic games. Wilson at one time held the world record in the 200 and 400 meters. In between he and Steve Roe were George Wine and Phil Haddy. Three of the four are in the CoSidsa Hall of fame with Roe to be inducted in June. Roe has assisted five student athletes in gaining national awards, he's promoted 16 All Americans, created the all century basketball team in 2002 and has worked over a hundred Big Ten and NCAA championship events. Steve Roe is our guest on this week's Fight for Iowa Podcast.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
