Nine years ago, Union County voters overwhelmingly voted to pass Measure 31-89, which limited county commissioners to two terms, or eight years, in office. A whopping 68% of voters supported the change, which came from Union County Citizens for Good Government. Now, more than eight years after the measure took effect, Union County Commissioners will no longer be limited by term limits. In January, the county commissioners unanimously voted to have the measure brought to the courtroom, requesting the circuit court to examine the constitutionality of the measure. Earlier this month, County Clerk Lisa Feik shared that the court ruled in favor of the commissioners, ending term limits. Union County Commissioner Paul Anderes joins us to share why he and his fellow commissioners voted to bring this measure to the courts. We’ll also hear from Jim Mollerstrom, the former organizer for Union County Citizens for Good Government, to share why he was pushing for this initially and his thoughts on the change.

Tune in here to this Friday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen kicks off the show by talking about Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board member Melissa Easley's comments about the political assassination of Charlie Kirk. Jensen references a Facebook post from Easley in which she states in part, "don't expect me to feel sorry, pitty, (sic) or mournful” for the killing of Charlie Kirk. Jensen notes that this is a bad look for Easley, and how she doesn’t comprehend her faults... Jensen is also joined by Monroe Mayor Robert Burns, who acknowledges the tragic passing of Charlie Kirk, as well as exposing social media posts by the former chair of the Union County Democratic Party. He mentions that the Republican Party does not stand for any political violence, as well as taking up arms with people they disagree with. He goes on to mention that the former chairman of the Democratic Party in Union County is against everything associated with the white race. Mayor Burns remarks that his post on social media implied that "the cost of Charlie Kirk's death is the result of fascism". Burns explains the he and his Party exposed him for his post in order to bring bigger political issues to light, and that authorities have been notified of this person's actions. What happens when a community bank thinks beyond deposits and loans? Chad Hoffman, President of Richwood Bank, reveals the unexpected journey from traditional banking to becoming a true community cornerstone and industry disruptor.Growing up a farm boy who scraped hog barns in northern Union County, Chad never imagined leading a financial institution. Yet when tragedy struck his family in 1993, he found himself stepping into banking, eventually transforming a modest $68 million bank with 24 employees into a thriving $1.2 billion institution employing 210 people across nine locations.Chad explains how Richwood Bank pioneered an innovative in-branch coffee shop concept. Unable to sell products due to banking regulations, they created a donation model that benefits local nonprofits while attracting community members who might never otherwise enter a bank. This creative solution has generated nearly $1 million for community organizations while completely reimagining what a bank lobby can be.But the innovation didn't stop with coffee. Recognizing the varying needs of their small business clients, Richwood expanded into marketing services, payroll processing, and business consulting – all stemming from their deep commitment to helping local entrepreneurs succeed. As Chad puts it, "Stronger community businesses make stronger community banks."Throughout the conversation, Chad shares profound leadership insights gained over his 31-year banking career. From the importance of finding mentors to the transformative power of team recognition, he explains how his leadership philosophy evolved from numbers-focused to people-centered. His recommended reading list includes Patrick Lencioni, Simon Sinek, and Jocko Willink – authors who have shaped his understanding of purpose-driven leadership.Whether you're a small business owner, an aspiring leader, or simply someone who cares about community development, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how innovative thinking can revitalize traditional institutions.
