On Friday, a one-year pilot, which gives victims of serious sexual assault access to transcripts of judge's sentencing remarks, will end. The Ministry of Justice has said the scheme will be made permanent, although it will stay under review as more victims access the service. Anita Rani is joined by BBC London home affairs correspondent Sonja Jessup, along with forensic psychologist Kerry Daynes, to discuss the success of the pilot and how the experience of being a victim-witness might psychologically impact victims. With housing costs rising and social care stretched, more families are choosing - or needing - to live under one roof. Anita speaks to two women navigating the ups and downs of multigenerational life: Alison Taylor, who moved her parents in with her children, and Katie Fforde, who welcomed her grown-up children and grandchildren back home. A new report conducted in collaboration with the dating app, FEELD, has suggested that in reaction to the loneliness felt during and after the pandemic, more people have looked at exploring the different types of romantic relationships available – such as consensual non-monogamy and polyamory. How do those engaging in new relationship hierarchies navigate "relationship anarchy"? Anita talks to Ana Kirova, CEO of FEELD, Ana Kirova and to author, Chloe Seager, about her experiences with non-monogamy.And Anita talks to Catherine Whitaker about the primetime night session slot on Court Philippe Chatrier at the French Open where, according to reports, a women's singles match has not taken place since 2023.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Laura Northedge

Grace is joined by broadcasting legend Vanessa Feltz. From BBC breakfast to BBC London to LBC, she has graced our airwaves – and our TV screens – since the late 80s. Grace and Vanessa take a trip down memory lane to discuss her granny's secret Jewish recipes she'll never pass on, her mother's ‘bombe surprise' pudding, and how being in the public eye has shaped her. If you liked this episode then have a listen to Grace's conversations with Graham Norton, James May and Krishnan Guru-Murthy
My guest today is the broadcaster Vanessa Feltz. Ever since the mid-90s, Vanessa has been a fixture on British TV and radio - and also, for better or worse, our front pages. She became known as the “British Oprah” and that applied not just to her consummate skills as a broadcaster and talent for saying the unsayable, but also what she describes as her “pernicious public cycle of yoyo dieting.” She cut her teeth on This Morning, interviewed stars on the Big Breakfast Bed and hosted her own hit show Vanessa, the first British US-style talk show. She's also presented BBC Radio 2's Early Breakfast Show and BBC London's Breakfast show and now hosts a Saturday show on LBC. But like many women in the public eye, her professional achievements have often played second fiddle to media scrutiny of her private life. Vanessa joined me to talk about finally baring it all in the frank, funny, fearless autobiography she said she'd never write, Vanessa Bares All. We also discussed growing up with a chorus of critics and dealing with the toxic media attention paid to her weight. Plus divorce, being back in the dating game at 62, why she wishes she'd been able to take Ozempic, finally losing her inhibitions and why she'd really like a great big love. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Vanessa Bares All by Vanessa Feltz and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Theatre critic Mark Shenton discovered his sexuality via a porn mag in Soho aged 16, that quickly turned into an addiction alongside sex addiction which escalated to him hiring porn stars by the hour. Now 12 years into his recovery, Mark found a way out of a living hell that ended in a deep, dark depression and a stark feeling of hopelessness. Mark Shenton is a very well known theatre critic but today he shows us his deeply personal and human side in, perhaps, my most raw and astoundingly honest interview yet. I cannot thank you enough for being so deeply candid to help people. Legend ❤️ More on Mark - Mark Shenton has been a full-blown theatre addict since the age of 14. He later found a way to monetise it — and get free tickets as well — by becoming a full-time professional theatre critic and commentator. Born and raised in South Africa, he emigrated with his parents to England when he was 16, and attended Cambridge University where he read law (but spent most of his time reviewing and producing student theatre). He later became editor of arts and entertainment at the Press Association and spent a year working in the offices of producer Cameron Mackintosh. In 2002 he went freelance and became a full-time writer, separately (and sometimes simultaneously) acting as theatre critic for WhatsOnStage, The Stage (where he was also an associate editor), the Sunday Express and londontheatre.co.uk for the next two decades. He also regularly broadcast on BBC London (radio and TV), as well as contributing to other outlets including LBC, Times Radio and Talk Radio. In 2022 he moved to West Sussex with his husband, and now writes a regular theatre newsletter which is published on his own website, ShentonStage.com. In this episode we discuss how Thomas broke into the journalism industry and the barriers he had to overcome, the stress that comes from covering the crime stories he does and the documentary about Tamara Ecclestone's diamond heist. For Thomas's mental health, we talk about the isolation and loneliness that living in London can bring about in people, therapy he has accessed in the past because of issues he's had in previous relationships and how he's now recovered and in a great place with a supportive partner and wider support network. An elite group of military intelligence insiders—including the former head of the Pentagon's secret UFO program, Luis Elizondo—have stepped forward to advocate for greater transparency around this baffling phenomenon. In May of 2022, Congress held the first hearings on the topic in over 50 years. So what the heck is going on? Could this possibly be true? The UFO Rabbit Hole is a structured, rational, science-based deep dive into these puzzling developments in an attempt to answer that very question. Grounded enough for skeptics, accessible enough for newbs, and meticulously researched enough for the most battle-hardened ufologists, this book is an essential guide for anyone who wants to understand more about most the most baffling and compelling news story of our times.BioKelly is the host of the The UFO Rabbit Hole podcast. In episode 153 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Sarah Lee. Sarah is a journalist, writer and sub-editor who currently works for BBC London. Sarah wrote an article for the BBC News website about her experience of having stage three malignant melanoma in January 2022, which is the most serious form of skin cancer. Sarah had developed a pea-sized black mole on the top of her scalp and after five months and three different doctors failing to recognise its risk, Sarah was finally diagnosed by a second dermatologist who urgently ordered the surgical removal of the moles. It was then a race against time to begin treatment and underwent surgery to remove 24 lymph nodes. In this episode we discuss her journey into journalism, social class and competition in the industry and why shouting about her work on social media doesn't come naturally to her. For Sarah's mental health, we discuss that scary period of her life having melanoma and her relief at finally getting diagnosed, her treatment journey, the mental toll that surgery had on her and how she feels now she's come out of that period. We also discuss a hugely traumatic event which happened to one of her family members when they were sexually abused after a night out. Sarah had to sit through 2 weeks of court proceedings and she consequently found attending court as a court reporter in her professional life extremely triggering after that trial concluded. As always, #itsokaytovent You can read Sarah's article on the BBC News website in full here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-62044136 You can follow Sarah on social media below: Twitter: https://twitter.com/sarahkatelee_ Support Us: Patreon: www.patreon.com/venthelpuk GoFundMe: www.gofundme.com/f/help-vent-supp…ir-mental-health Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk

Katinka Blackford Newman is an award-winning documentary film director, journalist, and author. While going through a divorce, Katinka took an antidepressant. Not unusual – except that things didn't turn out quite as she expected. She went into a four-day toxic psychosis with violent hallucinations, imagining she had killed her children, and in fact attacking herself with a knife. Caught up in a real-life nightmare when doctors didn't realize she was suffering side effects of more pills, she went into a year-long decline. Soon she was wandering around in an old dressing gown, unable to care for herself, and dribbling. She nearly lost everything, but luck stepped in; treated at another hospital, she was taken off all the medication and made a miraculous recovery within weeks. Since then, Katinka has researched the side effects of antidepressants and interviewed some of the world's leading experts. Her best-selling book The Pill that Steals Lives has been featured on Radio 5 Live, BBC London, Good Morning Britain, the Victoria Derbyshire Show, and in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Daily Mail, and The British Journal of Psychiatry. In 2017 her research was made into a BBC Panorama program A Prescription for Murder which investigated whether an antidepressant could be the cause of one of the worst mass killings of this century. She is also the co-founder of a not-for-profit organization called Antidepressant Risks. Today we chat about... How Katinka lost a year of her life after taking Lexapro Katinka lacerating her arm with a knife The different medications Katinka was put on to try and treat the adverse effects of Lexapro How antidepressants are no more effective than a placebo The role drug companies play in the chemical imbalance theory How Katinka lost the ability to love, feel, care for herself, and show up for her children What mental health looks like in the UK The importance of recognizing red flags to adverse effects to medications What shocked Katinka most when doing her research How Katinka lost the will to live and her constant thought of “I want to kill myself” The realization Katinka had when she reflected on her father's suicide Why for-profit mental health services can be a dangerous situation ____________________________ >>> Click here if you're tired of living with anxiety and want a FREEBIE to help you heal it
Anil Sebastian is a multifaceted artist, producer and vocalist producing some of the most unique and otherworldly music to emerge from the UK in recent years. As well as their solo identity, Anil Sebastian is also in Icelandic band Hrím, with singer Ösp and producer Cherif Hashizume. Sebastian is also the creative director of pioneering sonic branding agency DLMDD. Already a familiar face to many in the industry as co-founder and director of the legendary London Contemporary Voices Choir, Anil's work has seen them regularly working on arrangements for and appearing alongside the likes of Alt-J, Manu Delago, Imogen Heap, Elena Tonra (Daughter), Kelly Lee Owens, Eivor, Eska, Nitin Sawhney, Laura Mvula, Sam Smith and U2. The choir has performed at several Burberry fashion shows, The British Fashion Awards, the 2020 Tommy Hilfiger show, two BBC Proms and also features on the Harry Potter Play soundtrack. Anil's choral version of Amber Run's ‘I Found' (which LCV performed with the band for Mahogany) has had over 4 million streams. Having released their debut album “Mesonoxian”, co-produced by Ingmar Kamalagharan and Cherif Hashizume (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne) in late 2017, collecting support on the way from i-D, Stereogum, Clash and Line of Best Fit online as well as radio support across Radio 2, 3, 6Music, BBC London and the Asian Network, the album campaign culminated in a sold out show at London's legendary ICA. “A gorgeous listen from start to finish...brave at every turn” Album Review, Line of Best Fit Since then Anil has immersed themself once again in the creative process, contributing co-writes/features the debut album of legendary producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Imogen Heap, Robyn), Björk percussionist Manu Delago's Silver Kobalt album as well as taking on several bespoke commissions for sync, contributing choral arrangements to queer artist and activist Nakhane's debut album, and co-writing tracks for The Cinematic Orchestra side-project Hunrosa. In October 2020 Anil Sebastian's immersive short film Daffodil was released on NOWNESS. Daffodil has been created with support from Momentum Funding by PRS Foundation, Arts Council and National Lottery Directed by Thiing Studios and written by Anil Sebastian, Daffodil explores the future of artificial intelligence and looks at what it means to be human and how we define identity. Combining animation by Thomas Rawle with slick live action footage and archival footage from Sebastian's childhood, Daffodil is a surreal examination of the moral implications of artificial intelligence through Sebastian's imagination. Set in the near future, Daffodil tells the story of a scientist (played by Anil Sebastian themself) gone rogue and we see them attempting to bring back the conscious mind of a child in the form of an AI. In a parallel, otherworldly meta-verse this playful creature is being created through animation. Paired effortlessly with the film and archival footage, Sebastian's exquisite avant-garde art pop soundtrack provides the perfect backdrop for this mesmerising cinematic experience. The film was shown at Normal? Festival of the Brain as well as at a private screening underground at The Brunel Shaft in London. For Sebastian's cinematic debut, they have collaborated with an impressive list of some of the most forward thinking musicians, artists and thinkers in the UK. Sebastian holds a degree in Physics and Philosophy and they are one of the most unique voices and producers in the UK scene having worked with some of the most iconic global stars such as Imogen Heap, U2 and Bjork producer Guy Sigsworth. Daffodil also sees a contribution by Anil's brother Ingmar Kamalagharan as the co-producer of the film and live drummer on the soundtrack. Kamalagharan has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and works at the UK Space Agency and he is a long-time collaborator of the producer and innovator Cherif Hashizume (David Byrne, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno) in machine learning, interactive music installations and innovative software. Daffodil is a Descartesian meditation on existence and consciousness. As technology continues to infiltrate our public and private life, how can we reach an authentic form of being? Can an artificial intelligence gain consciousness and can it truly exist? Would you bring back someone you lost and if so, would they really be them? By combining science fiction elements with intimate, personal storytelling through encapsulating visuals and soundtrack, Daffodil is a film not to miss. http://www.anilsebastian.com https://www.instagram.com/anil.sebastian

She is on a global movement to impact 100 million + women and their children by helping them reclaim their lives from this insidious abuse, and helping them believe that they deserve to be treated with kindness—because this is the foundation for their empowerment. She is on a mission to create kinder intimate relationships, kinder families, kinder communities and therefore, a kinder world. It's a win-win-win. To help with that mission she created National Love is Kind Day, observed on July 27th to celebrate that real love is kind. It's not cruel, it's caring. It's not terrorizing, it's tender, it's not threatening, it's uplifting. Rosie and her daughter Sunny are sharing their powerful story of escape, healing and freedom in their joint upcoming memoir entitled: 11 Hours to Freedom. Rosie is a frequent guest on live stages, podcasts and radio shows, including BBC London. She holds certifications in Neurolinguistics Programming (NLP), Life Coaching, Executive Coaching, and Timeline Dynamics, Intercultural Communications as well as holding an MBA in finance. She enjoys biking, dancing, cooking, baking Christmas cookies and building gingerbread creations for Christmas. She got her first wetsuit at 65 and now loves to boogie board. And, she loves hugs! This useful article, Super Bowl 2021: brands play it safe but creativity shines through by John Harrington - PR Week https://bit.ly/2Zp4aXc by John Harrington at PR Week, summarised some of the main ones to watch. We talk about a newcomer to the sponsorship pool for the Six Nations. The return of Rugby has also meant the return of online abuse and abuse of women media personalities covering the sport. Maggie Alphonsi and Danielle "Nolli" Waterman received a barrage of sexist abuse on social media and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Bath Prop, Beno Obano on his England debut was targeted by trolls on Instagram. This episode is a little longer than our usual episode because we're exploring an issue we feel needs to have more discussion - online abuse and trolling. In this episode we speak with journalist and producer Florence Lloyd-Hughes about her experiences within sport and specifically when she has reported on men's sport. This led to her not only having to report online abuse to the police but also to make her profiles private in order to control her experiences online in a way that helped her get on with her work as well as feel safe. Florence's work includes working for Women in Sport, Season Zine, Metro, Guardian and BBC London among others.
