There has been uncertainty over the years as to whether food items which have passed their best-before date can be safely donated, even though they are still safe to consume. Many manufacturers and retailers have avoided possible liability by simply destroying or discarding their products and erring on the side of caution. A new national standard for food donation and redistribution has now been published by the South African Bureau of Standards and the period for public comment has just closed (16 June 2026), and it will now be finalised and made available to relevant industries and sectors.
