With warmer weather bringing more cyclists and runners onto Western Cape roads, serious incidents are unfortunately becoming more common. Just on Friday, John Maytham spoke to listener Nicette Millar, who shared her harrowing story of surviving two crashes caused by reckless drivers. Her story is not an isolated one. The Pedal Power Association receives regular reports of near misses and collisions, with some cyclists even capturing evidence on onboard cameras, yet often being turned away when trying to report it to police. Over the weekend, they shared an update on one of these cases which they called “justice for cyclists,” after Stellenbosch resident Eugene van Tonder, who suffered a vicious knife assault while cycling in January 2024, saw his attacker sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment.
