Day 1,642.Today, after a parade of robots marks Ukraine's Independence Day, we turn to New York, where the United States has refused to join NATO allies and other partners in calling for Russia to join Ukraine in an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Meanwhile Britain's Andy Burnham has said he will join European allies in pressuring Donald Trump to provide Patriot missiles to Ukraine – just as Zelensky says Kyiv has received “a few” but “we need more”. We report on the fantastic news for Wildberries and Ozon customers and owners of other large businesses in Russia, as long as you don't read Moscow's small print. And we talk to a former South Korean diplomat to get a better idea of just how significant – and dangerous – Kim Jong Un's support is for Vladimir Putin. Silicon Bites Ep389 | 2026-08-25 | The marketplace economy was Russia's one modern achievement. Ukraine is burning it down. But this is not recreational, for fun (as one British newspaper implied). It is intentional, targeted and strategic. This is wartime infrastructure, as much as it is civilian – with its revenue powering the war economy and its shelves stocking military equipment for the SVO. After Ukrainian units hit the fifteen largest logistics hubs of Wildberries — it is now Ozon's turn. These are the words of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, published on Saturday. Less a threat, more a schedule and statement of intent. Ukraine is no longer conducting individual strikes but executing on a strategic plan with consequences. It finished with the marketplace leader, Wildberries, and it has moved to number two. It is telling the Russian business class, in advance, in public, which door it is coming through next. And on Monday morning, the market answered. Ozon's shares dropped as much as twelve percent on the Moscow Exchange.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment. The symbolism and psychological impact of destroying the residence, as if it were a Wildberries warehouse would be immense.Last night Russia fired ballistic missiles at Kyiv for eleven hours. At least sixteen people are dead across the capital and the region. Eight of them died in Solomianskyi. The windows of a children's hospital were blown in and cars burned in the grounds. Ukraine intercepted almost none of the ballistics, because Ukraine does not have the interceptors. And roughly nine hundred kilometres south-east, on a cliff above the Black Sea, there is a 17,700-square-metre Italianate palace with a private church, a cinema, an underground bunker complex and an aqua disco — and, as of this month, a hole in the sky above it.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment. Anatol Lieven of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft analyzes the multi-faceted, global strains of the Russia-Ukraine war. He discusses how Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian-adjacent sites like Sochi and the Wildberries warehouse aim to demoralize Russia, though historically such strategic bombing campaigns fail. Meanwhile, Russia is betting on a war of attrition, weaponizing Black Sea grain blockades to squeeze Ukraine's economy and strain global food supplies. Additionally, Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries are triggering a worldwide energy crisis, while Western nations like the UK face economic paralyzation as they struggle to balance heavy defense commitments with severe domestic recessions. Silicon Bites Ep383 | 2026-08-17 | Koledino is gone, Russia's consumer economy is being dismantled warehouse by warehouse. This is not a stalemate, but a systematic elimination of the modern economy that has lulled Muscovites into thinking the war is far away and does not affect them. That illusion has been demolished. At half past eight on Saturday evening, the drones started coming. They were still coming at half past six on Sunday morning. Ten hours. Six hundred of them, by Sobyanin's own count, headed for the Moscow region. Two hundred and one shot down over the oblast – is the claim. Eight hundred and twenty-two claimed downed nationwide by the Russian Defence Ministry — a number Moscow publishes to sound strong, but which reveal the incredible mass of offensive drones that were in the air. This is a modern-day Blitz but conducted with pinpoint accuracy and aligned with clear strategic objectives. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment.

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2026 51:22

From municipal tap water in Tyumen that smells of sewage and cemetery runoff to the catastrophic logistics collapse after 20% of Wildberries' warehouse capacity went up in smoke, the math of vranyo is finally catching up with the Kremlin. We unpack Sberbank's open refusal to bail out the Ministry of Finance's 8.6 trillion ruble budget deficit, the Euro-2 fuel epidemic destroying Russia's fleet of modern Chinese imports, Maxim Kalashnikov's realization of the "Arrow of Ahriman," and the 9-million-ruble birthday party at Balzi Rossi that shattered the last illusions of frontline unity.Become our patron:https://www.patreon.com/theeasternborderMerch store + another option for memberships:https://theeasternborder-shop.fourthwall.com/Follow what's going on here in the very border of Eastern Europe:https://bsky.app/profile/theeasternborder.lvCar4Ukraine Eastern Border Summer Campaign!https://car4ukraine.com/campaigns/summer-sunshine-trucks-2026-eastern-borderSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/theeasternborder. Back in April, the white-paper dreamers in Washington told you the Russian state was a rational actor optimizing its war effort. We used the Ponyatiya analytics engine to predict an August logistical meltdown and a regional liquidity freeze. Tomorrow is August, and the Wildberries hubs, energy refineries, and regional budgets are burning on schedule.1. Domestic Energy Rationing & The Moscow Fuel Vacuum — 95% ProbabilityBy October 2026, the Kremlin will be forced to introduce formal, centralized fuel rationing across Western Russia and the Moscow region. Priority will be stripped from civilian transport and domestic logistics to feed the military apparatus, triggering localized black-market fuel rates exceeding $2.50 to $3.00 (200–240 RUB) per liter in provincial hubs.2. Complete Commercial Logistics Paralysis & Black-Market Dominance — 90% ProbabilityBy Q4 2026, major e-commerce platforms will officially abandon centralized regional fulfillment in high-risk zones (Volgograd, Tatarstan, Krasnodar, Ryazan). Civilian goods distribution will fracture into localized, cartel-run black markets where private security groups (MOGs) charge up to $7,500 (600,000 RUB) per run, completely outpricing state-subsidized retail.3. The September Mobilization Wave & Feudal Labor Battalions — 85% Probability Following the September Duma elections, Moscow will execute a mandatory mobilization wave of 300,000 to 500,000 men. To prevent urban panic, the state will simultaneously implement 17th-century feudal labor laws, converting underperforming agricultural, industrial, and municipal workers into forced "rear-support" penal units to keep the harvest and rail lines from completely collapsing.4. "Bratva 2.0" Cartel Warfare in Provincial Cities — 80% Probability By late Autumn 2026, returning combat veterans will merge with established organized crime syndicates to create Bratva 2.0. Armed clashes between veteran-led cartels, regional police, and migrant labor networks over protection rackets, drug distribution, and local food supplies will paralyze provincial cities across the Urals and Southern Russia.5. Peripheral Asset-Stripping & Regional Economic Stampede — 75% ProbabilityBy Winter 2026/2027, regional governors and local elites will stop waiting for Moscow's checks to clear. Following Wildberries' lead in buying up Kazakh logistics space, regional oligarchs will initiate covert asset-stripping, withholding local resource tax revenues and issuing localized barter instruments or promissory notes to keep their populations fed, effectively triggering the de facto economic fragmentation of the Russian Federation.Become our patron:https://www.patreon.com/theeasternborderMerch store + another option for memberships:https://theeasternborder-shop.fourthwall.com/Follow what's going on here in the very border of Eastern Europe:https://bsky.app/profile/theeasternborder.lvDownload all episodes for free on our website; pictures accompanying certain episodes can be found there as well!http://theeasternborder.lv/Car4Ukraine Eastern Border Summer Campaign!https://car4ukraine.com/campaigns/summer-sunshine-trucks-2026-eastern-borderSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/theeasternborder.
