When English singer/songwriter Nick Drake released his ambitious second album - 'Bryter Layter' - in 1971, he all-but-squashed any chance of commercial success by failing to promote it. Three years later the troubled artist was gone. This week's guest, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Paul Chastain (Velvet Crush, The Small Square), helps us unpack this evocative collection of songs featuring musical backing by members of Fairport Convention, The Beach Boys and John Cale among others. Essential listening. Spend an hour listening to singer-songwriter Nick Drake. You'll be glad you did.
In today's podcast episode we discuss the “Death Penalty” both pros & cons. We list which states currently have the Death Penalty, those that don't & the three states that do but the Governor placed a moratorium on executions meaning a temporary suspension of those executions. I fully support the Death Penalty while my cohost Bryter Layter is a little less convinced.

This week we discuss the tragic and beautiful sounds of Nick Drake. During his lifetime, this guy made no money, sold no records, had no fans, yet still somehow managed to record 3 gorgeous albums through it all. Now, decades after his untimely death in 1974, his music is widely available and beloved. We tackle each album in extreme detail and generally blow the guy for over an hour.Closing track: “Things Behind the Sun” from Pink Moon (1972)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincMike’s Picks:Five Leaves Left (1969) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteBryter Layter (1970) — Worst AlbumAlex’s Picks:Pink Moon (1972) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteBryter Layter (1970) — Worst AlbumAlbums we discussed this episode…Five Leaves Left (1969)Bryter Layter (1970)Pink Moon (1972)Follow Mike on Instagram @popejesseventura for show updates and @pandermonkey for original music.Follow Alex on Instagram @motherpuncher

In this special episode of the Intentional Clinician Podcast, Paul Krauss MA LPC reports on the developments in the state of Michigan which almost led to the job loss of 10,000+ Counselors and almost resulted in 300,000+ patients losing access to mental health care (when the Licensing and Regulatory Authority (LARA) of Michigan overrode the wishes of the entire Michigan Board of Counseling (who was ironically appointed by LARA to be the experts on the field of Counseling) and declared that it was changing a 31 year old rule for 'clarification purposes' among other doublespeak--which would have rendered LPCs unable to practice in the State of Michigan--even though LARA denied that fact...). This caused a rush of advocacy led by the Michigan Mental Health Association and other Counselors to pass a bill to update the rules for LARA, so that the changes would be negated. The bill was HB4325, sponsored by Representative Aaron Miller. The bill had been around for years and was waiting for this moment. The good news is that the Michigan Legislature listened to the 5000+ counselors that formed a coalition with the Michigan Mental Health Counselors Association--with both the House and Senate passing HB4325 unanimously. The bill is to be signed by the Governor of Michigan on Oct 29, 2019. Paul Krauss MA LPC comments on the happenings in Michigan. NOTE: There is much more to be said on this subject than is in the episode. Paul then plays a series of recordings by Counselors involved in the fight to oppose LARA's arbitrary rule changes and to pass HB4325 in Michigan. Yeah, we know....it's been a hot minute. But we are back in the swing of things and decided to bring along one of our dearest friends for this one: singer-songwriter Larry Llodra, hailing from Austin TX, to talk with us about one of the most under-appreciated folk artists of the last half century, Nick Drake. In the span of just three years, Nick Drake gave us three incredibly beautiful folk-pop records that are nothing short of masterpieces, each one bringing us just a little bit closer to the man himself. Just two years after his extremely vulnerable, poetic & raw third studio album "Pink Moon" was released to the masses, he succumbed to his own overwhelmingly troubled & isolated mind, overdosing on prescription pain medication at the age of 26. Join us as we dive into his second studio album, "Bryter Layter".

Sometimes you find your favourite music. But in those rarer moments, that music seems to find you. That’s the experience Rob had with 1971’s Bryter Layter by singer-songwriter Nick Drake. The record was Drake’s second album, exploring English folk-rock textures with some chamber pop and jazz thrown in, and with some interesting lyrical content to ponder, too. The Deeper Cuts trio talks about that and the album that finds you: music that seemed as if had been waiting for us all our lives. They also discuss the surprises found in Bryter Layter even years later and the beauty that can be found in its details: hopefulness and melancholy living together in an enchanting way that enfolds the listener every time. Our Spotify playlist has all the songs from this album. Each week, we'll all the other albums we'll cover this season to it as well, so check it out!
After setting our guitars and world's on fire last week, The Album Club takes it down a gear for a leisurely country drive in this episode. To say that Nick Drake was underappreciated in his lifetime is as much of an understatement as it is criminal to underestimate the man's talent. We sift through the short, mysterious, difficult and ultimately tragic life of one of last century's unsung recluse folk heroes. It's not all doom and gloom though; as we wind our way through the album's beautiful rural paths, we find time to discuss unconfirmed Patterson/Gimlin-esque video sightings, and rip saxophone over-player Ray Warleigh to shreds.
Joe and Denisse listen to, and discuss Bryter Layter by Nick Drake. Play the album at home, and let us provide commentary!
