Words That Burn
Famous Americans and Why They Were Wrong by Kaveh Akbar- Poetry Reading and Analysis

Words That Burn

Welcome back to Words That Burn, the poetry podcast taking a closer look at poetry. In this episode, host Benjamin Collopy offers a close reading of Kaveh Akbar's "Famous Americans and Why They Were Wrong", from his 2021 collection Pilgrim Bell. The poem runs to seven couplets and moves from a ribbon tied around an oak tree to a wish that somebody forgets you today. Benjamin situates Akbar as a poet formed by prayer and by place, tracing the poet's biography from a boy reciting Arabic he could not translate to a writer preoccupied with what empire does to language. In This Episode, I Explore:The Ribbon and the Hostage Crisis: Why the opening image reads so strangely to a non American audience, and how the yellow ribbon curdled from a welcome into a warning after 1979. We follow the poem discussion through the oak's roots sinking into the dirt and the heart that sinks alongside them, and ask what exactly is seeping into whom.Akbar's Ghazal: A look at the form, its couplets, its refrains, and the strict rules Akbar declines to follow. The ghazal is famous for what Agha Shahid Ali called its formal disunity, and that disunity turns out to be the literary technique doing the heaviest lifting here. We break down how enjambment carries meaning across couplets that seem unrelated on the page, one of several literary devices worth slowing down for.Data at the Centre of a Heart: The sinking library, the architect who forgot the weight of the books, and Akbar's argument that empire uses abstraction to cudgel us into idleness. We look at what the word "data" is doing in a poem that also treats untranslated prayer as a kind of data, and why only one of those is sacred. The Mercy of Being Forgotten: Why a poem about erasure ends by wishing for it. Visibility inside an empire is rarely a gift, and Akbar's closing hope is offered in the grammar of prayer, which is to say with no guarantee anyone is listening.Accessible enough for poetry for beginners and no prior reading required. As always, this poetry interpretation belongs to Benjamin and is very much up for debate. She's hanging out with Quinn who is really into her. Grace is really excited to be in charge of decorating the town Christmas tree. Her main goal? Getting the contract to decorate the entire town! We then meet Ryan. He's a big city finance boy who is trying to figure out what to do with his grandmother's historic St. Nicholas House. He's planning on listing it but gets a call from the mayor. The mayor calls him to see if he'd be interested in reviving the beloved Ribbons and Bows charity fundraiser. He's not so sure about this. So he heads back to his hometown and is pumped to bump into Grace. The sparks are flying. The mayor comes by Grace's office to see if she'd be willing to talk to Ryan and convince him to do the fundraiser. If she does this for her, she'll move to the top of the list of potential decorators to decorate the town next year. Grace's bff Melanie is pumped about this because they're both single and ready to mingle. Quinn goes to the St. Nicholas House to talk to Ryan to try to find out about what his plans are for the house since Quinn is a real estate agent and he has a very interested buyer. Ryan says if he decides to sell, he'll call him first. As Quinn goes to leave, Grace shows up. Ryan asks Grace if there's something going on with her and Quinn. She's like oh it's nothing, we just hang out sometimes. She convinces him to move forward with the fundraiser and that she'll do all the heavy lifting! Maggie starts hanging up mistletoe around town to help make sure that Ryan and Grace get together. They start hanging out a ton. She even tells Quinn that it's just not going to work out between them. Everything is working out great aside from not being able to find a 14 foot Christmas tree. But he surprises her by finding one! But Quinn ruins everything by telling Grace about his plans to buy the St. Nicholas House. He decides ultimately he's not going to sell. The party happens. I couldn't remember some of the high schools associated with the mascots shown on the ribbons and didn't remember playing some of the schools. Poth Pirates and Karnes City Badgers were easy, but I had to look up the Aggies of Poteet and the Matadors of Seguin. I can't come up with a school for the Longhorns. In her signature style, Laura layers secrets and sinister situations into one impossible-to-put-down novel. Romantic suspense rises to the next level as Leo and Harriet wrestle not only with the strange events taking their lives hostage but also the possible death of a marriage neither is ready to give up on. Or are they? Stock up on snacks and drinks before you sit down to read, because once you pick up this book, you'll be the next hostage--to the next page! Ribbons of Guilt by Laura Thomas A marriage in crisis. A betrayer in the wings. A life at stake. Harriet Duval has it all—a handsome French husband, a delightful young daughter, a successful career as a professional ballerina behind her, and a beautiful future in a charming village in the English countryside. Even her beloved sisters can't see the painful truth she hides beneath her perfect mask… Successful businessman Leo Duval is at a breaking point physically, emotionally, and spiritually as he is forced to harbor secrets in Paris while his marriage in England dissolves before his very eyes. The magnetic pull of Harriet's old dancing life and the shocking murder of a Swan Lake ballerina causes her to question everything: faith, future, family. CALI KULA prepared an amazing journey featuring some unreleased songs created with Deep Space vibe in mind and also classic tracks carefully selected. In his words:“I started from a simple question: what kind of music would I produce if I were making something specifically for the podcast? The unreleased tracks were created with the Deep Space vibe very much in mind. I took the time to build a whole universe around the mix, almost as if we were listening to Deep House from outer space.” Cali Kula has woven a few classics into the journey, creating a perfect balance between discovery and familiar moments. And there’s another reason why this mix feels especially close to home: he included one of his all-time favorite Brazilian songs in the selection from Clara Nunes! The night sky can sometimes look like a tie-dyed T-shirt flapping on a clothesline. Ribbons and swirls of bright color ripple through the sky. They can change appearance in seconds – blown by the solar wind. The colorful display is an aurora – the northern and southern lights. An aurora flares to life as charged particles from the Sun run into Earth at high speed. Earth’s magnetic field funnels the particles toward the magnetic poles. When particles hit atoms and molecules high above the surface, they knock atoms out of their usual configuration. When they return to normal, the atoms emit light. The color of an aurora depends on what the charged particles hit, and where they hit it. Most auroras are green. They switch on when particles hit oxygen molecules at altitudes of about 60 to 200 miles. Red auroras are fed by oxygen that’s even higher. The lower fringes of a display can appear pink or dark red – the result of collisions with nitrogen at lower altitudes. Collisions with hydrogen and oxygen create blue and purple auroras. But they’re not very common, and they’re hard for the eye to take in. They’re easier to see in photographs. Most of the time, the northern lights stay close to the magnetic pole. When the Sun spews out more particles, though, they can spread outward, shining in regions where they’re seldom seen. And the colors can get more intense – dramatically “tie-dying” the night sky. This episode is about what happens when outcomes and process contradict each other, why the people around you can only see the scoreboard, and how to hold both stories at the same time without letting one cancel the other.

Episode #538: The fifth episode in our five-part series features conversations recorded at the 16th International Burma Studies Conference at Northern Illinois University, where scholars, students, researchers, and practitioners gathered under the theme Dealing with Legacies in Burma. Held in the midst of political upheaval and humanitarian crisis, the conference offered a rare space for open exchange, collective reflection, and connection. Insight Myanmar was welcomed into this setting to record dialogues with a diverse range of attendees, produced in collaboration with NIU's Center for Southeast Asian Studies. With these episodes, we hope to bring listeners into the atmosphere of the gathering and into conversation with the people who continue to shape the field today. Khaing Wai Wai Zaw taught English in Myanmar for eight years, and went to Northern Illinois University for a higher degree in her field. But she also became a research assistant there cataloging artifacts, in particular 228 rare, scared sasi jo ribbons. While having no qualifications in this area, she relied on her Buddhist literacy and background to interpret inscriptions, andensure they have a safe home at the NIU library, at least until her country regains its stability. She also reflects on the political crisis in Myanmar and wrestles with the role monks should play, balancing her own reluctance to criticize with her belief in social responsibility. “I'm a totally different person when I get on stage.” With this feeling, Karen dancer and community leader Hsa Win reflects on how dance preserves his identity. He grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand after his family fled Burma, and later moved to the U.S. Wanting to educate others about his Karen heritage, he began performing traditional dances at community events. Hedescribes competitions, bamboo dances, and the spiritual dances of the thirty-seven nat spirits. Onstage, he feels confident and transformed, adopting the personalities of the spirits he portrays, and American audiences are enthusiastic. He now lives in Ohio, where he teaches dance to Karen youth to help them “embrace their identity” and keep their culture alive. Researcher and artist Ni Ni Win describes how Burmese marionettes have become a powerful link to her identity now that she lives in America. She explains that puppetry developed to portray particularly sacred Jataka Tales that humans were not permitted to depict. Under royal patronage, puppet shows became very popular; the marionettes conveyed religious teachings, history, and even political concerns, since civilians sometimes asked puppeteers to voice criticisms through the puppets. This art form declined when the monarchy was dismantled by the British, and then as other forms of entertainment became increasingly popular. Amy also draws inspiration from pagoda engravings, known as gnot patterns, which are used on traditional Burmese textiles as well. Living abroad has increased her appreciation for these traditions, which help her stay connected to her homeland.

There goes that man, back in the headlines. Lane Kiffin typically basks in the spotlight and attention he generates, but is he ready for the level of scrutiny and pressure that'll center on him during his first season at LSU? Already, Kiffin is stirring the pot with his recent comments in a Vanity Fair profile that rekindled Mississippi fans' ire for him, after he left the Rebels on the doorstep of the playoff. Kiffin spent more than a decade rebuilding his personal and professional image after he got fired at Southern Cal. Then, he burned it all down for the LSU job. Worth it? On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams discuss Kiffin's comments to Vanity Fair and debate how he'll handle a level of expectation he's not faced in more than a decade. Also in this episode, Toppmeyer reveals some details of his recent trip to Baton Rouge, where he interviewed Kiffin and LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry. Adams weighs in on Kiffin's comment comparing the blowback he's dealing with now, compared to what he experienced after leaving Tennessee. Toppmeyer explains why Kiffin's first season will be particularly important, and the hosts predict whether LSU will make the playoff. Later, Toppmeyer and Adams react to the AFCA coming out in favor of a 24-team playoff, as coaches lean into participation ribbons. Can anyone stop a 24-team playoff now?

Someone may be counting on you. Here are some things I didn't know… Living donors can provide a kidney or part of their liver as well as bone marrow. It is our favorite time of year: the 2026 Trend Report is here! Caroline, Taryn, and Liz are joined by the Ballard Designs Product Design Team—Hillary Park, and Will Turner—to break down exactly what is coming next in the world of interiors. The team reveals the surprising colors predicted to dominate (including "Green Glow" aka Slime and "Fresh Purple"), why "Builder Khaki" is making a nostalgic comeback, and the specific design aesthetic that bridges the gap between Gen Z and Boomers. They also discuss the move away from gray, the evolution of bouclé, and why your next gallery wall should feature "weird" personal art. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Brown is the New Black: Move over, cool grays. The team confirms that brown—from "Cocoa Powder" to "Builder Khaki"—is the dominant neutral for 2026. It pairs perfectly with the trending warm metals (like nickel) and "dirty" pastels. Embrace "Grandma Crafts": High-tech is out; analog is in. The trend of "Grandma Crafts" is huge, with needlepoint, embroidery, and paint-by-numbers becoming the ultimate way to unwind and decorate. Hunting for Raccoons and Ribbons with Border Terriers [caption id="attachment_14799" align="alignleft" width="376"] Karen Fitzpatrick with one of her Meadowlake Border Terriers.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Karen Fitzpatrick from Meadowlake Border  Terriers to talk about hunting raccoons and ribbons. “My background honestly was straight hunting,” Fitzpatrick said. “I hunted long before I ever bought a Border. I started here in the US and then started hunting in the UK, met people there. I just love the hunting aspect of Border Terriers. “Border Terriers are still very high on the list for hunting instinct and actually are still made to do the job they were bred to do. “In the middle of winter, we did a lot of barn hunting, and that was just literally clearing out haylofts of raccoons. In this deep, deep snow like today, you would hit a big barn, cut a few terriers loose in a loft and woo, come on. It was crazy. “We did a lot of in ground hunting during the spring and fall, but we tried to not do too much in the spring, mostly because of a lot of groundhogs having babies. Fall is the better time because they're big and fat and getting ready to hibernate and the holes are bigger.” Fitzpatrick has produced 170 champions and 12 best in show winning Border Terriers, including the top winning bitch in the breed. She was named AKC's Sport Breeder of the Year in 2014 and Terrier Breeder of the Year in 2018, one of a handful of breeders honored in both conformation and performance. “They have to be able to function and do their job and my belief, back then as it is today, they can be beautiful and still do their job and that is what I have absolutely brought through and I will continue it.”

In this episode you will reflect through storytelling as you journey with three young girls who learn to earn their "ribbons" — tokens of love, safety, and worth — through perfectionism, people-pleasing, control, and self-sacrifice. Each ribbon becomes a mask, a medal, a memory… until they begin to question what they've really won.    If you've ever felt exhausted from doing, proving, and performing your way into love — this story is for your younger self.

This week's episode blends reflection, rhythm, and real talk as the crew honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month while diving deep into what's shaping music, culture, and conversation right now. The show opens with a nod to survivors and advocates fighting breast cancer, followed by a spooky season spin—breaking down songs that sound innocent but have eerie undertones. From there, the team unpacks Rolling Stone's Top 250 Songs of the 21st Century, debating who was snubbed and who earned their spot. In music talk, they explore the growing EDM–Hip Hop crossover, the rise of Florida's rap scene, and a hot “what-if”: Would DJ Khaled still be a superstar if he only worked with local Florida artists? The conversation keeps flowing with dream Verzuz battles between Cash Money and No Limit, Shannon Sharpe's pivot to hip-hop interviews, and Mona's appearance on the Joe Budden Podcast. They also celebrate A'Ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces on their WNBA championship win and question whether artists' back-to-back touring schedules signal a recession-era hustle. Culturally, the hosts weigh in on whether Black Americans should attend Caribbean Carnival, the growing trend of creative directors overtaking actual designers, and the heartbreaking disappearance of Kada Scott, a 23-year-old woman from Philadelphia. Finally, the crew revisits the decline of mystery in fame, Ayesha Curry's viral podcast comments, and favorite homecoming moments from the past weekend — rounding out an episode that's equal parts awareness, analysis, and entertainment.

Send us a textThe sweetest victories sometimes come when we least expect them and have nothing to do with winning ribbons. After months of heartbreak watching my mare struggle with a mysterious lameness and facing my own impending surgery, I found myself  feeling defeated. But an unexpected act of kindness changed my mind set.For a competitive rider like myself who typically spends weeks meticulously preparing for shows—perfecting patterns, glitzing show clothes, and mentally rehearsing every transition— I was suddenly given an opportunity that  challenged everything about my approach. Could I simply show up, swing into the saddle after months without riding, and enjoy the experience without my usual intensity? This mental pivot proved more challenging than expected as my "tiger stripes" of competitiveness initially refused to fade. But something magical happened when I finally mounted Mercedes after not riding her for two and a half years. The moment my boots settled into the stirrups, competition fell away ,replaced by gratitude. Despite an antsy horse in a hectic arena and even completely botching a pattern in my second class, I experienced perhaps my happiest show ever. This unexpected day delivered a powerful reminder about why we fall in love with horses in the first place—the connection, the partnership, and the simple joy of being together. In our quest for ribbons and perfection, we sometimes forget to enjoy the ride itself, both in horsemanship and in life. When was the last time you reconnected with the pure joy that drew you to your passion? Subscribe to The Horse Fix for more insights about horses, horsemanship, and the lessons they teach us about ourselves.Support the showMay all your blues be ribbons

Pro Tips for Hot and Dog Shows and When Safety Overrules Ribbons Host Laura Reeves brings you Pure Dog Talk's LIVE@5 discussion of the hot summer dog shows and when safety is more important than ribbons. "Let's talk about what hot means. And everybody has their own understanding of it, right? So what is hot to someone like myself from the Northwest might be no big deal if you're from Phoenix. Understand that if you're hot, your dogs have similar acclimation and so it's really important to understand what your dog can tolerate. "I was doing my handling class for folks last night and I was talking about this topic and I had a pug dog back in the day, Pug Special, and the day he went best in show in Wisconsin, the thermometer said it was 105 and it was 85% humidity. Yeah, it was really gross. If you look at the photo of me from that day, I look like I've been dipped in olive oil. It is just disgusting. "The judge was Norman Patton. I remember it all very clearly and he flat told me that the reason my dog went best in show that day, not just was he a nice pug dog or what have you, but on that horrible gross awful day, my dog went around the entire best in show ring without panting. "And so a lot of that has to do with what the dog is acclimated to. That particular pug dog lived in Nebraska at the time. He was accustomed to gross humidity. And my dogs were not pampered pets. They went outside in the gross humidity. I was careful with them, but they were acclimated to the heat and the humidity, which other dogs If I had brought him straight from the West Coast to that environment, he'd have died. But because he was acclimated after a couple of years in Nebraska, it was more manageable for him. "And the other thing that I did was manage his situation. So at a hot dog show, you have an ice chest full of ice and water. More water than ice, but it is ice cold water. You do not give that to your dog to drink. You put your cool coat or your shammy or your towel or your whatever you're going to use in that water and then you ring it out as much as you need to for your dog's coat and you put it on the ground and you have the dog stand on it. "You do not put it over the dog's back because that's not going to get them cool. Dogs release heat from their pads, they release heat from their ear flaps, they release heat in their groin, anus, all of the places that have unfurred space. And so if we're going to keep our dogs cool, the way to keep them cool is to have the coldness underneath them. "And then I had a good Ryobi fan. I had a spray bottle with water in it, and I had another shammy and I had trained him. So this is the other part. He was trained. That's an important part of this conversation. He was trained. He could lie down on his side in the ring and I would cover his eyes, his whole head up with another cold chamois. And so he was iced, literally, he was chill. "And this particular ring was outdoors, kind of in semi shade. I spent the vast majority of that time in the best in show ring with the dog lying down and my back to the judge, to the ring, to everything else so that I could put him in the shade. I used my body to shade him because there wasn't as much shade as I would like there to be. "So you can manage the heat if the dog is accustomed to it, if the dog is fit and if it is acclimated to the basic conditions and then you can keep them cool enough for the amount of time that you have. So that's number one. "Number two, remember. There's no law that you have to go to the dog show that you entered if it's 100°. Another special, another time, another place. There was a big candy ass. I can't say it another way. God love him. I loved that dog, but he was not heat tolerant and he had won a big specialty in California. And I had a huge falling out with his co-owner over it because I refused to show him the group, because it's gonna be 105 and it was out in more sun and he was going to be...
