Pointe shoe fittings can feel like a mystery—but Riley Weber, a well-known pointe shoe fitter for Nikolay, is here to break it all down! In this episode, we talk about what to expect at a fitting, how to tell if a fitter knows what they're doing, and why dancers shouldn't just settle for “fine.” Riley addresses common fitting issues (like sinking!), the truth about toe pads, and why some shoes are impossible to get in stock. Plus, we get into listener questions on hypermobility, online fittings, crazy pointe shoe hacks, and more. If you're a dancer, parent, or just pointe shoe curious, this episode is packed with insights (and some wild fitting stories). Tune in! Ever seen an artist create a global smash hit from the moment of inception through each and every moment of rehearsal and refinement to recording, live premier, and continued real time performances 60 years later? With "Get Back," now you have. Pulling this out of the ether during the 1969 Twickenham sessions, this seedling turns into a fantastic performance by the lads, brought to its' full potential with assistance from Billy Preston. As it says in the ad for the single, it's "music to rollercoast to" and who are we to argue? Joining us this week are Robert Rodriguez and Jerry Hammack. You may know Robert from his brilliant and long running podcast, Something About the Beatles and his books, and Jerry's the author of the Beatles Recording Reference Manuals, a fab 5 volume series documenting how each and every musical sausage was made by the band. They've joined forces now for Ribbons of Rust: The Beatles Recording History in Context. It's a fascinating deep dive into the recordings and the world, musical and otherwise, that informed them. Volume 1 is out now, covering 1954-1963, so there's A LOT more to look forward to! Grab a copy at RibbonsofRust.net! What do you think about "Get Back" at #75? Too high? Too low? Best-selling and award-winning authors Robert Rodriguez and Jerry Hammack are on the podcast to talk about Ribbons Of Rust: The Beatles' Recording History In Context: Volume 1 - July 1954 Through January 1963.The Beatles' story has been told many times, but often with little focus on their personal experiences during their era. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and producer George Martin were influenced by the sounds around them. Ribbons of Rust presents their journey by immersing readers in the music and times they lived in. The first volume, richly illustrated with period artifacts, takes you with The Beatles from their early inspirations to their initial compositions and covers. Rodriguez and Hammack explore how The Beatles developed their sound in Liverpool and Hamburg, drawing on American rock 'n' roll and deeper cultural traditions, ultimately securing a recording contract with EMI. Spanning July 1954 to January 1963, the book details the post-war British music scene and the influences that shaped The Beatles, bringing readers into the studio with them, from early Liverpool recordings to Hamburg sessions. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for September 24th Publish Date:  September 24th    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Tuesday, September 24th and Happy heavenly Birthday to Jim Henson. ***09.24.24 – BIRTHDAY – JIM HENSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Marietta to Consider Lifting Pit Bull, Rottweiler Ban Red Cross says Blood Donors Needed Now to Help Combat Critical Need GHC to Add bachelor's in digital media in Fall 2025 All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA (06.26.24 CU OF GA FREE CHECKING_REV_FINAL) STORY 1:  Marietta to Consider Lifting Pit Bull, Rottweiler Ban The Marietta City Council is considering lifting the ban on pit bulls and Rottweilers in off-leash dog parks. Currently, these breeds are prohibited, unlike in nearby areas where restrictions focus on aggressive behavior rather than specific breeds. Councilmember Cheryl Richardson, a Rottweiler owner, advocates for this change, arguing that aggression is not breed-specific. Some residents, like Corinne Shanahan, agree, noting that issues often arise from owner behavior rather than breed. However, concerns remain about enforcement and safety, with some council members, including Chairman Johnny Walker, opposing the change due to safety concerns. The council will vote on the proposal in an upcoming meeting. STORY 2:     Red Cross: Blood Donors Needed Now to Help Combat Critical Need The American Red Cross is urging blood and platelet donations to stabilize the critical blood supply, especially from type O donors and first-time donors. Only 3% of Americans donate, yet donations are vital for patients needing transfusions. Donors by September 30 receive a $15 e-gift card, and those donating in October can get a $10 Amazon gift card and a chance to win a $5,000 gift card. Numerous local blood drives are scheduled, including at the Cobb Blood Donation Center and various community locations. Visit RedCrossBlood.org for more details and to make an appointment. STORY 3:  GHC to Add Bachelor's in Digital Media in Fall 2025 Georgia Highlands College will introduce a Bachelor of Science in Digital Media and Communication in fall 2025, marking its 10th baccalaureate degree. This program, part of the School of Humanities, is designed to prepare students for careers in the digital media and communication fields, focusing on skills like production, market research, branding, and social media analytics. Graduates can pursue roles in media, public relations, event planning, and more, with opportunities for entrepreneurship. The program offers flexible learning options, including online and hybrid courses, and students can start classes as early as this spring. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Cobb County) STORY 4:  Cobb Schools to Fund 150 More Graduate Degrees for Educators The Cobb County School District will expand its Georgia's BEST Program by adding 150 more educators next year, funding their graduate degrees at no cost. Launched in February 2023, the program has already invested over $1.15 million and accepted 750 staff members. In partnership with the University of West Georgia, it is open to full-time, certified district employees. The program aims to enhance educator retention, improve educational quality, and offer higher salary opportunities. The new cohort will begin in January 2025. For more details, visit CobbK12.org. STORY 5:  Cobb Eyes New Roadkill Pickup Program Commissioner Keli Gambrill proposes a new roadkill pickup incentive program for Cobb's Animal Services, allocating $100,000 from her contingency fund. The program would pay animal services employees bonuses for pickups outside regular hours, saving costs compared to contractors. Employees would earn $20 per non-deer and $25 per deer pickup. This initiative aims to improve response times and reduce reliance on less reliable contractors. The program addresses increasing roadkill reports, especially in rural areas like west Cobb. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will discuss this proposal in their upcoming meeting. We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 9 (Ingles Markets (What To Add To Diets) 9 STORY 6:  14-Year-Old in Custody After South Cobb High Shooting A 14-year-old is in custody for a shooting at South Cobb High School during a community event on Saturday night. The suspect faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury and is expected to recover. The incident occurred during a football game, though it was not a district-sponsored event. Cobb County School Board member Leroy Tre' Hutchins advocates for enhanced safety measures at all school events. The firearm has been recovered, but details on how the suspect obtained it remain undisclosed. The investigation is ongoing. STORY 7:    Flower Show at North Georgia State Fair The North Georgia State Fair has kicked off with its first annual flower show, featuring over 386 horticultural displays in Building B, alongside Arts & Crafts and Baked Goods competitions. Ribbons for the largest pumpkin and other categories were awarded on September 18. The shows are organized by the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Marietta Garden Council, judged by National Garden Club judges. Holly Walquist and Dorothy Dowell lead the event, supported by volunteers. Today's guest brings me back to a simpler time. Welcome Natalie Ribbons of Tele Novella. I learned about her family connection to radio and her parents' decision that she should be a concert pianist after they inherited a piano. While Natalie may have disagreed, it IS what got her singing and steered her to a performing arts high school (after getting kicked out of her previous school). That's where she took secret guitar lessons. She formed the band Agent Ribbons where everything was first time DIY. So they may have overdone a few things, maybe took a wrong turn or two. For example, after building up a following in California, moving to Texas because of two Weimaraners. And Natalie tells the story of the event that spelled the end of Agent Ribbons but how it simultaneously spawned Tele Novella. And it's STILL a rollercoaster ride. They weren't happy with the way things were going and Natalie left music for about three years. But leave it to good ol' PBR to bring ya back in. (That's beer for those who don't know). But the Pabst connection actually helped shape the sound of the band. Tele Novella has a new album out called Poet's Tooth. The music is reminiscent of the great western sounds I (and my dad) grew up on, like Marty Robbins. Listening to makes me feel like I'm right there with the band in Lockhart, TX. It's on Kill Rock Stars, so grab it, download it, or stream it. Follow tele_novella_tx on IG and TikTok, Tele Novella on FB. We are @PerformanceAnx on socials. Get our merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. There's a new design up there you might like. Coffee can be shared at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. One of the most remarkable sights in the night sky is M42, the Orion Nebula. It looks like a hazy patch of light in Orion's Sword, which is to the right of his three-star belt in early evening. The nebula is one of the most-distant objects that's visible to the eye alone – more than 1300 light-years away. It's also one of the biggest – a couple of dozen light-years across. What's really remarkable, though, is the nebula's identity. It's a nursery that's given birth to thousands of stars, with thousands more being born today. And all of that activity has taken place over just a few million years. M42 contains huge clouds of gas and dust. Clumps of this material collapse to form stars. The most massive stars form a cluster known as the Trapezium. These stars are much bigger, brighter, and heavier than the Sun. They produce a lot of ultraviolet energy. It zaps the gas around them, making it glow. If you could travel inside M42, you'd see hundreds or thousands of stars. Some would be too bright to look at directly, while others would look like dull embers. Ribbons and curtains of gas would surround you, glowing pink, green, or blue-white. Dark lanes and blobs would run through the background – dense clouds of dust where more stars are taking shape. You'd also see some objects that look a bit like tadpoles – proplyds – the possible birthplaces of planets. We'll have more about that tomorrow.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
