It's well known that "American Pie" was written by Don McLean to commemorate the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper on Feb 3, 1959. But what's not as well known is that it's packed with cryptic references to other seminal events in history. Who were the "Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost"? Who was Miss American Pie? What did McLean mean by "Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry"? Well, a quintet from Prince Edward Island has put that song under the microscope and the result is both a fantastic and fascinating play called "Inside American Pie," which is playing at the CAA Theatre in downtown Toronto. Host Steve Paikin speaks with the show's co-creator Mike Ross, and cast member, Alicia Toner.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Patrisha McLean survived nearly three decades of abuse by her [unfortunately still] famous ex, Don McLean, singer of "American Pie." Once free, though Don tried his best to discredit her in the media (sound familiar?), she started her own nonprofit to help other survivors of violence, aptly named, Finding Our Voices. It's been working on taking down abusive a-holes ever since, and we love her for it. She joins us today on Toxic to tell us more about it. (Apologies in advance for the sound issues in this episode. Amanda was having issues with her microphone.) We want to hear from you. Do you have a story we need to discuss or a guest we should feature? Visit us at ToxicThePodcast.com and share your story. If you're experiencing abuse or domestic violence, please reach out to someone you trust. You can also connect with a trained advocate near you through DomesticShelters.org. Finally, help us keep this conversation going. Share an episode of Toxic with a friend, your dentist, or even the person next to you in line at the grocery store. Follow us on your favorite podcast platform or social media, and if you're willing, leave us a review. Your support helps us amplify these critical stories. Together, we can create change.
Welcome back to another exciting episode of Rick's Rambles! This week, we've got a jam-packed show filled with fascinating facts, inspiring stories, and a touch of nostalgia.
Scoot listens back on how Don McLean describes the way people should feel about his song "American Pie".
This hour, Scoot and Ian get a surprise sit down with WWL's Bobby Hebert who tells us about New Orleans past hosting Super Bowls, his past in going to them, his time playing against one of the wildest fan bases in the league in Philadelphia, how sometimes when you are playing, stuff get squeezed that you'd rather not, and more. Scoot also circle back to an interview he had with Don McLean and how his song "American Pie" can be about whatever you'd like for it to be and the guys close things out covering the Taylor Swift's quiet night at the Grammys, Scoot's new direction for his show, and a little bit more mayonnaise discussion cause why not?
Today is the "Day The Music Died", the day The Big Bopper, Richie Valens, and Buddy Holly all died in a plane crash after a show in Green Bay. Don McLean wrote and recorded the song "American Pie" as a tribute to the loss of lives on that day. Then Civic Media Meteorologist Brittney Merlot tells us what to expect this week. Snow is in the forecast, but it looks like we'll avoid really cold temperatures. We also find out that John has proclaimed it to be "The Month of Maino." We're not sure what that means and we may be a bit scared. Maino and the Mayor is a part of the Civic Media radio network and airs Monday through Friday from 6-9 am on WGBW in Green Bay and on WISS in Appleton/Oshkosh. Send us a textEver wondered if rap artists can rock a stage as dynamically as legendary bands like U2? With a blend of humor and thoughtful analysis, Jack Calabrese and I tackle this hot debate, sparked by Kendrick Lamar's much-anticipated Super Bowl halftime show. We swap stories about live performances, from the days of Prince's iconic shows to the cutting-edge use of AI and holograms in concerts today. Our chat meanders through musical landscapes, comparing the bombastic flair of rock with the rhythmic allure of rap—proving that while styles may differ, the passion for live music remains universal. As we journey through the music industry's ever-evolving scene, we reflect on how titans like Madonna and Neil Young have weathered the storm of digital disruption. Higher concert ticket prices, legal squabbles, and the authenticity of music biopics all feed into our lively conversation. Jack and I reminisce about the good old days of working in record stores and the nostalgia-laden playlists that filled our ears back then. With anecdotes about lost hits and one-hit wonders, we paint a picture of a musical era both cherished and complex. Our exploration of musical memories wouldn't be complete without a nod to family connections, as we share how introducing our kids to diverse genres created bonds that transcend generations. From the culinary delights of a Publix Italian sub to the sweltering heat of Live Aid, our conversation flows with the ease of old friends reminiscing about the past. Join us for a heartfelt and humorous journey, as we wrap up with an amusing tale involving Don McLean and leave you eagerly anticipating Jack's next appearance.

Interview with Arlen Roth 2024 Arlen Roth is a true guitar legend; part of the list of who he's recorded and toured with contains folks like Simon & Garfunkel (together and individually), John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Bob Dylan, Bee Gees, Don McLean, Levon Helm, Ry Cooder, Duane Eddy, Danny Gatton, Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, John Sebastian, Johnny Winter and countless more. He also appeared with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Patti Smith in the Martin Scorcese Rolling Thunder film, created the guitar parts and was consultant and teacher to Ralph Macchio for the legendary blues film, Crossroads. In 2016, he wrote and performed an acoustic guitar piece with Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom, Jr. of Hamilton for ESPN. Arlen was voted in the Top 100 most Influential guitarists of all time by Vintage Guitar Magazine and top 50 all-time acoustic guitarists by Gibson.com. Now, on Arlen Roth's 20th solo album and his fifth all-acoustic offering, he's bringing rootsy acoustic music to new heights on Playing Out the String, set for release September 27 and distributed by MVD. The new album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alex Salzman, who also contributes keyboards to the mix. Arlen's previous album, Super Soul Session, with bass legend Jerry Jemmott, sat atop the Blues and Soul charts for 22 straight weeks, and was in the Top 5 for 55 straight weeks this past year. Arlen has also been at the forefront of guitar and music education, with 10 best-selling books, and he was the first-ever to offer video instruction with the giants of the music industry through his “Hot Licks” company, which he started in 1979, and has had millions of students worldwide. His column for Guitar Player magazine was voted #1 by the largest margin of readers from 1982 to 1992, and was also turned into a best-selling book, Hot Guitar. On Playing Out the String, this all-acoustic, mostly solo album is very personal to Arlen and is really like getting an up-close "at home" concert in your living room. On it, he paints with broad strokes across several genres of music he loves. From "Old Timey" Norman Blake material to country blues from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Tampa Red; he even makes you feel at home with Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" and gives his 12-string guitar a workout on the archetypical, "Walk Right In." https://www.arlenroth.com
