Steve Cropper falleció ayer, 3 de diciembre, a los 84 años de edad. Miembro de los MG’s y guitarrista de sesión de la casa Stax Records, el estudio de Memphis desde el que ayudó a desarrollar el Soul sureño de los años 60. Instrumentista, productor y compositor; su guitarra o su firma aparecen en clásicos inmortales del género a cargo de Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd o Rufus Thomas. The Chefs se formaron en Brighton en 1979. Grupo liderado por los cantantes y compositores Carl Evans (guitarra) y Helen McCookerybook (bajo), y completado por el hermano de Helen, James McCallum (guitarra), y por Russell Greenwood (batería). La receta musical de estos creativos cocineros se basó en sencillas y pegadizas piezas de pop, con melodías alegres y letras divertidas sobre cosas cotidianas. Este 12 de noviembre Neil Young cumple 80 años de vida, de los que más de 60 ha dedicado en cuerpo y alma a la música. Nuestro disco favorito de hoy no es una novedad en el sentido estricto de la palabra, ya que vio la luz en agosto del pasado año. Se trata de “Smoke and Fiction”, la última entrega de los californianos X y el disco con el que los cuatro miembros fundadores en 1977 anuncian su despedida.
