Low vaccination coverage in many countries of the Caribbean must be urgently addressed to stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect the most vulnerable, warned PAHO Director, Carissa F. Etienne, with health care workers and the elderly remaining particularly at risk.Out of the 13 countries and territories in the Americas that have not yet reached WHO's 2021 goal of 40% vaccination coverage, 10 are in the Caribbean, she said at a media briefing today. Vaccine hesitancy, a lack of vaccination centers in remote areas, insufficient staff numbers, and limited cold-chain infrastructure remain huge barriers to vaccination in many islands, but we now have the tools “to turn the tide on vaccinations in the Caribbean.”With 700 million people now vaccinated in Latin America and the Caribbean, there are “real-word data to show that vaccines are safe and effective against COVID-19,” the PAHO Director said. But interventions must now be tailored to the needs of those that remain vulnerable in each country.

Washington D.C., 16 February 2022 (PAHO) – Complacency around mask wearing, travel, and indoor gatherings created a perfect opportunity for the new Omicron variant to spread rapidly throughout the region and increase deaths, alerted PAHO Director, Carissa F. Etienne, with many places remaining “just as they were before.”“Reduced public health measures were insufficient to reduce the scale of this wave. And now we're dealing with the consequence: a rise in infections is driving a surge in deaths,” she said at a media briefing today. While still very high, COVID-19 infections declined by 31% this week, and deaths continued to rise by 5.6%.“Undoubtedly, Omicron overtook us,” the Director said. “Every time infections surge, there is a heavy toll for our families and communities,” with peaks in cases followed by peaks in deaths three weeks later.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting. They face questions on travel measures to prevent the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, calls for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, and a report from the parliamentary budget officer on clean drinking water for First Nations communities. (December 1, 2021)In a consensus decision aimed at protecting the world from future infectious diseases crises, the World Health Assembly today agreed to kickstart a global process to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the Constitution of the World Health Organization to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said the decision by the World Health Assembly was historic in nature, vital in its mission, and represented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen the global health architecture to protect and promote the well-being of all people. While experts work to better understand the new WHO-designated “variant of concern,” Omicron, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director Carissa F. Etienne, called for increased vaccination and public health measures to ensure the best possible protection against the virus. Urging against panic, the PAHO Director highlighted that there are still many unknowns and studies will take some time to complete. Until then, “it is not clear whether Omicron is more transmissible than other variants, or if it causes more severe disease,” she said in a media briefing today.

Washington, DC, December 10, 2021 (PAHO) – With countries in the Americas reporting severe disruptions in essential primary health care services, urgent investment is key to improving health systems continuously weakened by the pandemic, said Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director Carissa F. Etienne. “Chronic underinvestment has made the Americas vulnerable to COVID-19,” Dr. Etienne said today in a media briefing on COVID-19. With cases rising in some parts of the region following a two-month decline, it is vital that countries remain vigilant and prioritize public spending in heath so that no one is left behind.“Few countries invest as much public spending in their health services as they should, leaving them prone to shortages in health personnel and essential supplies.”
