In this episode, Dr. Kate O'Brien, Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals at the World Health Organization (WHO) shares her perspective on the state of global immunization programs halfway through Immunization Agenda 2030; the challenges associated with current measles outbreaks in the United States and around the world; why people who have never seen children die from preventable diseases may seem complacent about vaccines; steps that can be taken to strengthen vaccine confidence while ensuring equitable access to immunization programs; and what's at risk as the United States and other funders cut support for biomedical research and development at a moment when there are numerous promising products to prevent infectious diseases in the research and development pipeline.

Should you really trust the vaccine schedule? In this episode of the Awake & Winning Podcast, Kaylor sits down with Dr. Taylor Bean—a licensed naturopathic doctor, vaccine educator, and founder of VaccineOptimization.com—who's known for her nuanced, evidence-based approach to vaccine education and immune system support. With over a decade of clinical experience, Dr. Bean is on a mission to help parents make informed, empowered decisions about their health and their children's. From a Love Island dating story to a masterclass on infant immunity, this episode unpacks the real mechanisms behind vaccines, the role of aluminum, and why the current vaccine schedule doesn't align with infant physiology. If you've ever questioned mainstream medicine or felt gaslit in a doctor's office, this conversation is your permission to ask better questions and explore better answers. Episode Highlights: vaccines, aluminum in vaccines, informed consent, infant immunity, pharmaceutical risk, root cause medicine, public health, naturopathic medicine, immune development, medical coercion, childhood illness, alternative vaccine schedules Takeaways: Why aluminum is more concerning than mercury in vaccines The truth about infant immunity and TH2 dominance Why breastfeeding plays a vital role in immunity development The flaws in the vaccine schedule tied to maternal work policies How to support the immune system pre and post-vaccine Why functional medicine offers better viral care than conventional The importance of informed consent over fear-based compliance If you enjoyed the episode, please be sure to take a screenshot and share it out on Instagram and tag @thekaylorbetts. In the twelfth episode of The CommonHealth Live! which falls during World Immunization Week, Katherine E. Bliss talks with Dr. Adam Ratner, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases and author of Booster Shots: The Urgent Lessons of Measles and the Uncertain Future of Children's Health, and Dr. Ephrem T. Lemango, Associate Director of Immunization at UNICEF, about measles outbreaks in the United States and abroad; how to bolster measles vaccination coverage in a period of reduced financing for domestic and global programs; and why routine immunization programs are critical to global health security.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs has released a Vaccination Awareness Programme Trailer, Shielded for Life: The Power of Immunization, a key element of its ongoing campaign to promote immunization and strengthen public health across Saint Lucia. The trailer delivers a clear and compelling message: Vaccines are safe, effective, and life-saving, shielding our children, families, and communities from dangerous diseases. Through vivid imagery and powerful storytelling, the trailers aim to inspire confidence in vaccines and reinforce the importance of timely immunization in preventing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable illnesses. The Ministry encourages all citizens to view, share, and engage with the vaccine trailers, which are available across social media platforms and broadcast channels. These trailers form part of a broader strategy to ensure that accurate information about vaccines is accessible to everyone, countering misinformation and promoting a culture of health resilience.

In a resounding demonstration of international cooperation and a shared commitment to public health, the Government of Saint Lucia has received a substantial donation of 10,000 oral doses of the Polio vaccine from the Federative Republic of Brazil. The official handover ceremony was held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, and brought together diplomatic and health sector officials in a moment of unity and progress. The event was presided over by His Excellency Colbert Soares Pinto Junior, Resident Ambassador of Brazil to Saint Lucia; Honourable Moses Jn Baptiste, Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs; and His Excellency Peter Lansiquot, Saint Lucia's Ambassador to Mexico, Venezuela, ALBA, TCP, and CELAC. The donation forms part of the country's broader commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), launched in 1988 to eliminate polio worldwide. The Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation and Diaspora Affairs played an integral role in facilitating this collaboration, utilizing its diplomatic relationships to advance Saint Lucia's health and development agenda. This significant handover reflects Saint Lucia's continued alignment with global health targets and its dedication to achieving Universal Health Coverage, ensuring no one is left behind in the fight against preventable diseases. Recent measles outbreaks across the US have reignited the need for clinicians and the public to understand this highly contagious virus. Although measles was declared eliminated in 2020, declining vaccination rates have led to a resurgence of cases. In this episode, Dottie Borton, an experienced RN consultant and infection preventionist, provides vital information on how nurses can recognize, prevent, and manage measles. The discussion covers the virus's symptoms, transmission, and contagiousness; populations vulnerable to disease; and vaccination and postexposure prophylaxis. Immunization is paramount, and this episode offers advice for healthcare providers on how to handle potential cases and protect themselves and their communities. For more information, read the related article in the December 2024 issue of Nursing, “Measles: More than just a rash.”

In 2000, the United States declared that measles had been eliminated. But just 15 years later, the disease made a comeback—and it hasn't gone away since. In this episode, Dr. Adam Ratner, director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at NYU and author of Booster Shots: The Urgent Lessons of Measles and the Uncertain Future of Children's Health, explains why measles outbreaks are occurring again—as vaccine hesitancy and the antivax movement is on the rise—and what this means for the future of children's health.Ratner describes why measles is the most contagious disease we know of, and why it can be particularly harmful to children. As vaccination rates for children and adults continue to decrease in the U.S., are we at risk of undoing decades of medical progress? And what can we do to stop it?

Featured Guests Brigid Groves, PharmD, MS Mitch Rothholz, RPh, MBA, FAPhA Lucas Berenbrok, PharmD, MS, BCACP, FAPhA Key Takeaway Tools and techniques pharmacists can use to foster trust with patients regarding vaccines. CDC's "Vaccinate with Confidence" Initiative Protect Communities CDC is supporting partners to find and protect communities at risk through new investments and partnerships. Leverage CDC's Immunization and Vaccines for Children cooperative agreement to support efforts to identify and respond to areas with low vaccine coverage. Public trust in pharmacists and pharmacy teams helps reinforce vaccine messages. Collaboration with community leaders and influencers is crucial—messages must be evidence-based and credible. Best Practices for Pharmacists "Walk the talk"—if you or a family member received concomitant vaccines, share your experience. Example: "I received three vaccines at one visit (flu, COVID, and RSV), and I am here to talk about it (and I do)." Engage with patients by listening rather than lecturing. Acknowledge patient concerns and provide them with information to consider. Vaccine hesitancy is not the same as being anti-vaccine—many patients are "vaccine contemplators." Vaccine Effectiveness COVID-19 Vaccines Effectiveness Against Severe Outcomes Updated vaccines (September 2023 – January 2024) have been effective against XBB lineage and the new JN.1 variant. Waning Protection Booster doses are recommended as vaccine effectiveness declines over time. Population Variability Effectiveness varies based on age, underlying health conditions, and other factors (e.g., immunocompromised individuals may experience different levels of protection). General Vaccine Effectiveness Real-World Conditions Effectiveness is measured under real-world conditions, factoring in vaccine type, dosage, and timing. Monitoring & Updates The CDC continuously tracks vaccine effectiveness to adjust recommendations as needed. Impact of Vaccination Measles: Cases reduced from hundreds of thousands annually to only 49 in 2021. Polio: The U.S. has been polio-free since 1979. Hepatitis B: Routine vaccination significantly reduces liver cancer risk. Childhood Vaccinations: 100% reduction in cases of diphtheria, Hib, measles, mumps, polio, and rubella. Influenza incidence reduced by 17%. Overall Impact: Childhood immunizations have averted over 24 million cases of vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S. Between 1994-2013, vaccinations prevented: 322 million cases of disease 21 million hospitalizations 732,000 deaths Public Health Strategies Use immunization data to identify areas of low vaccine coverage. Engage with local health departments to monitor vaccine-preventable disease trends. Strengthen immunization programs to enhance outbreak response. Encourage collaboration among healthcare providers—it shouldn't matter who vaccinates, the goal is increasing immunization rates. Empowering Families CDC is partnering with key organizations to strengthen vaccine conversations between providers and parents. Strategies Start vaccine conversations early, targeting parents of infants and pregnant women. Reduce hesitancy and improve access in community health centers. Develop provider toolkits to address parental concerns during outbreaks. Combating Misinformation CDC is working with local messengers and partners to stop vaccine myths. Challenges & Key Messages New administration statements have increased vaccine doubts, making conversations harder. There is no link between vaccines and autism, diabetes, or other diseases. Investments in Public Trust: Work with social media companies to promote trustworthy vaccine information. Provide accessible, accurate vaccine data to policymakers. Engage state and local health officials to counter misinformation effectively. Priorities for 2020 and Beyond CDC aims to ensure that every community is protected through: Data-driven strategies to identify vulnerable populations. Expanding local resources to strengthen vaccination efforts. Building a culture of immunization in healthcare settings. Improving public communication on vaccines. Enhancing partnerships to promote immunization initiatives. Ten Key Messages for Pharmacists Engaging with Vaccine-Hesitant Individuals Vaccines Save Lives – They prevent serious diseases and save millions of lives each year. Rigorous Testing – Vaccines undergo extensive trials and continuous monitoring to ensure safety and effectiveness. Community Immunity – Vaccination protects those who cannot be vaccinated, such as infants and immunocompromised individuals. Combating Misinformation – Rely on credible sources for vaccine facts. Misinformation fuels fear and hesitation. Mild Side Effects – Most side effects (e.g., sore arm, mild fever) are temporary. Severe side effects are extremely rare. Consult Healthcare Providers – Encourage patients to ask healthcare professionals for reassurance. Vaccines and Fertility – There is no evidence that vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, affect fertility. Herd Immunity – High vaccination rates protect entire communities. Rapid Vaccine Development Explained – COVID-19 vaccines were developed quickly due to unprecedented funding and collaboration—without compromising safety. Long-Term Benefits – Vaccination prevents future outbreaks and contributes to long-term public health. Pharmacists' Role in Addressing Hesitancy Provide accurate, evidence-based information. Listen actively to patients' concerns. Engage with community health workers to strengthen local vaccination efforts.
www.commsolutionsmn.com- It's that time where one party's nominations go in front of the Senate, and the other party grandstands without any honesty or self-reflection. The Dems have decided that they are going to obstruct and filibuster every single nominee that comes through committee. There are open spots, and in some cases, they create a national security risk. Instead, the head Democrat stands there with an avocado and makes us confused. John Augustine of the Legislative Evaluation Assembly returns to the podcast to tell us all about the last legislative session. It was as terrible as terrible can be, but John goes through all of the carnage with us. There were multiple issues in the last session: The Dems rolled right over the Republicans, sometimes not even allowing them to debate a bill (with only a one vote majority). They also (and Republicans do this too) shove as much legislation as they can into one, bloated bill. This is in violation of the MN constitution, but they do it anyway. Governor Walz has been in office for six years and has vetoed one bill. There have been some awful bills passed. Look at the MN Voters' Rights BIll that gave protected classes the right to seek legal remedies if they feel that election outcomes are disproportionate. They can even go as far as to throw out redistricting changes. The Educational Supplemental bill pushed anti-bullying (which means it's ok to bully perceived the oppressor class), didn't allow for conscientious objectors of vaccines, and the awful, new, woke Social Studies standards. They tried to keep religious exemptions out of the Human Rights Act. There were also some clear constitutional violations, but the MN Supreme Court seemed to take up sides with the Dems as we watched the DFL run a candidate that didn't live in his district and poll workers threw out 20 ballots in another Senate District. What's going on in this state. This podcast is Exhibit A as to why we need to turn over the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches here in Minnesota.

The first human vaccines against viruses were based using weaker or attenuated viruses to generate immunity. The smallpox vaccine used cowpox, a poxvirus that was similar enough to smallpox to protect against it but usually didn't cause serious illness. Rabies was the first virus attenuated in a lab to create a vaccine for humans. Vaccines are made using several different processes. They may contain live viruses that have been attenuated (weakened or altered so as not to cause illness); inactivated or killed organisms or viruses; inactivated toxins (for bacterial diseases where toxins generated by the bacteria, and not the bacteria themselves, cause illness); or merely segments of the pathogen (this includes both subunit and conjugate vaccines).

Listeners will no doubt remember the devastating Ebola outbreak of 2014–2016. More than 28,600 people were infected, and 11,325 people died across several countries in West Africa. One of the hardest-hit places was Sierra Leone, where nearly 4,000 people lost their lives. In the years since, scientists and civil society advocates have raced to develop and implement a vaccine to protect against future outbreaks. That vaccine works—and works well. It was tested during outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is now being deployed proactively to protect at-risk populations, including frontline health workers. This includes Sierra Leone, where the vaccine is being rolled out to 20,000 frontline workers so they can protect their communities and the world from the next outbreak. My guest today, Allyson Russell, is at the forefront of these efforts. She is the Senior Programme Manager for Outbreaks & Global Health Security, Vaccine Programs at GAVI—the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization—which is supporting the rollout of this vaccine in Sierra Leone. We begin by discussing the toll the 2014 outbreak inflicted on the region before diving into how this new Ebola vaccine will help prevent the next outbreak from spreading.
