Chris Claremont came to Marvel as a young man, and was assigned a book that no one else wanted, a book on the brink of cancellation: X-Men. Over the next 17 years, his work on the title turned it into the biggest franchise in comic book history. Forty years later, his work has been adapted into 10 films, three TV series, countless video games and become a part of our cultural mythology.

Trish is attempting to survive with two girls home from school this week and a flu that won’t go away.Jeremy is working on a superhero romance for an anthology. He’s going to attempt writing in some steamy scenes even if it makes him blush. This month in Pop-Culture History1940 the radio show The Adventures of Superman first premiered1960 The Justice League first premiered in The Brave and the Bold #28, written by Gardner FoxWayne’s World premiered in theaters in 1992 and became the 8th highest-grossing film of the year, and is the highest-grossing film based off of a skit from SNL (Saturday Night Live)Geek Outs: The Book Club Edition!Trish's Geek Out!This month I read Dreadnought by April DanielsIt’s the story of a Trans girl who comes in contact with the hero Dreadnought in the moments of his death and she receives his powers. Her gender identity has been a secret until Dreadnought’s powers transform her into the ideal version of herself, and she suddenly has the body of a sixteen-year-old female. She is then faced with the responsibility of being a teenager with all the incredible powers of one of the worlds’ most famous heroes, along with the transmisogyny of her father, the unwanted advances of her best friend and discrimination from a terf in the city’s superhero team. This is an incredible coming of age superhero story with some of the usual tropes that don’t feel dusty or worn out. The scenes of discrimination and transmisogyny were hard to read at times because it was so real, you could tell that the author has been there. Ultimately, this is a story about living as your authentic self no matter what and finding fulfillment by doing so. And, it’s just a really good superhero story. I give it five out of five stars. Jeremy's Geek Out!This month I read X-Men: The End by Chris Claremont & Sean ChenThe End is Claremont’s farewell to the franchise and and characters he brought into the limelight. The X-Men have aged and we’re seeing their legacy play out. Bishop and Deathbird’s daughter liberates one of the most iconic characters, Jean Grey. The rise of the Phoenix (a story line originating in Claremont’s Phoenix Saga) forces the Shi’ar to unleash the War Skrulls, who attempt to exterminate the X-Men and nearly succeed. We watch beloved characters sacrifice themselves in moments of emotional heroism. Plot points from the Dark Phoenix Saga, Inferno, and the Mutant Massacre weave together beautifully to give us the closure Marvel denied its fans. It’s a brutal goodbye, while unfilled questions set up in the 80’s and 90’s are finally answered. Ultimately, if this were the final arc for the X-Men, it’d be tough, but I would say it couldn’t have unfolded any other way. I give it five out of five stars.Want to Join our Book & Comic Review for March:  Trish ReviewsBinti, by Nnedi Okorafor. It's Christmas time, that time of the year when we celebrate a jolly old man with a white beard...that's right, Chris Claremont! On this episode, we're taking a look at director Patrick Meaney's documentary "Chris Claremont's X-Men," now available on Amazon Prime. The doc takes an in-depth look at Claremont's long original run on the X-Men books, honoring his legacy and mourning a business model that evolved beyond him. We share our thoughts on the movie, as well as offer our own takes on Claremont and his undeniable place in X-Men history.  Plus, a look at the crazy roster of the newly announced "Hellions" book, and our usual, trademark, totally-on-topic talk of The Simpsons, Star Wars, and more. facebook.com/daysoffuturepodcast Twitter & Instagram: @dofpodcast

We didn't plan this but its May and our 75th Character Corner just happens to be the start of our Chris Claremont X-Men series and Claremont started his 17 year X-Men run in May 1975. It's like we were meant to do this. This is probably going to be the closest you get to us doing an X-Men comics podcast. We start at the beginning with Claremont's Phoenix saga which really covers 44 issues to truly understand Jean's evolution as the Phoenix. It fleshes out Jean, her relationship/friendship/sisterhood with Ororo (Storm) and her roommate Misty Knight (yeah...Jean was rooming with Misty Knight). We see that Charles Xavier is kinda an asshole, the first appearance of the Shi'ar, how the new X-Men come together as a family and so much more. Having reread this it makes what Fox has done with two attempts at the Dark Phoenix storyline infuriating. The Phoenix saga isn't about how Jean becomes so powerful she loses control. It's about how Jean Grey sacrifices herself to save her family. Twice. She dies and is reborn as the Phoenix out of love to save the X-Men. The path to her becoming the Dark Phoenix is a slow burn of betrayal. But even then, it ends with her gaining control thanks to her family's willingness to sacrifice everything for her and in the end she sacrifices her life again to save the X-Men. It's a masterful story that's been neutered in the movies. Issues: X-Men Giant Size #1 - Not Claremont but this introduces the new team/characters and sets the stage for Claremont's magic There are a couple of ways to read this run and Kriss & Dpalm used two different methods. Dpalm's Reading List (X-Men/Uncanny X-Men #94 - 138) Pre-Phoenix Saga Uncanny X-Men #94 - 100 - Claremont takes over as the writer of the X-Men and starts building towards Jean becoming the Phoenix Uncanny X-Men #94  - First appearance of the Shi'ar Uncanny X-Men #97 - First (official) appearance of Lilandra Phoenix Saga Uncanny X-Men 101 - 108 Proteus Saga Uncanny X-Men #125 - First Appearance of Proteus Uncanny X-Men #127 & #128 Dark Phoenix Saga Uncanny X-Men #129 - 138 129 - First appearances of Hellfire Club (Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost), Kitty Pryde 132 - First appearance of Harry Leland & Donald Pierce Kriss's Reading List (Classic X-Men 1 - 44) Classic X-Men 1 - 44 tell the same story but also have additional short stories after the main story in each book that are written by Claremont years later that flesh out the characters & story. Examples: Classic X-Men #2 - Jean & Storm's forming their friendship Classic X-Men #3 has the X-Men dealing with/mourning the loss of Thunderbird Classic X-Men #8 - This expands on what actually happened to Jean when she merges with the Phoenix force. It's a deeper explanation of her sacrifice and why the Phoenix bonded with her Classic X-Men #12 - Magneto's Holocaust origins, losing his daughter in a fire and moving the character into a more sympathetic light All of the stories are great and really dig into the characters and are must read Like what you hear?
