On this very special episode of Battles & Banter, Avery is joined by Codie and regular recurring guest Julia Wall to pay tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who passed away on August 28, 2020. Boseman was most famously known for portraying T'challa aka Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also portrayed famously historic Black American figures such as Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown. Avery, Julia & Codie highlight Boseman's career and then dive into the MCU headfirst to take on the climax of 'Black Panther': the clash between T'Challa and Erik Killmonger, as well as their forces, at the top of Mount Bashenga aka the Great Mound. It's a more somber episode, but a great one at that! Chadwick, this one is for you.
Jarvis Simmons joins Ryan for a discussion on representation in film. Specifically, they take a look back at Marvel's "Black Panther" and why that was such a pivotal moment for pop culture. Other topics include different racial interpretations of established characters, new stories featuring characters not seen as the norm, and the debate of our time: Iron Man VS Batman.
This week Day 1 Radio catches up with media veteran and current Editor-In-Chief of VIBE Datwon Thomas to talk about the role of Black members of the media in days like this and the overall experience of being a Black journalist and editor in a field where things change on a daily basis. Listen as Datwon paints a picture of this journey through stories and forward-thinking ideas as only an OG like himself could. 4:30- The Vibe EIC talks about what he feels is his primary responsibility is right now as a leading creator in Black media. Among them are continuing to tell Black stories and support the younger voices and activist who are drawing attention to important issues right now. 7:30 - Datwon talks about how even the best in Black media are still being placed the lowest on the totem pole when it comes to getting access to Black superstars. He shares a couple stories from his experience talking to the cast of Marvel's "Black Panther" that shows how this happens often. 15:45 - Datwon talks about his current role as the Editor-In-Chief of VIBE and the challenges that come with it. He talks about how the brand has stayed alive due to a number of different editors refusing to let it die. He talks about the challenges he's facing and why it's important to keep and protect legacy brands like this. 20:00 - The conversation shifts to the future of journalism, especially with the immediate changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Datwon compares the need for physical newsrooms to the magic that happens when recording artists still work together in the studio. But he also stresses that it's important to use all of the new technology at our disposal. 24:25 - We discuss the cycle of people who create the culture, not owning the culture and how this moment in time may lead to a break in that cycle. 29:00 - Here we talk about entering the space where OG music writers have to decide what music they should offer their thoughts on and how to find younger writers to talk about that music instead. 34:00 - Datwon talks about the role that Black media should be playing in times like these and how we need different kinds of writers to tell different kinds of stories. 41:00 - Here we talk about the idea and realities of members of the Black media pooling their resources together to create their own mega media outlets. 44:30 - Branden asks Datwon and Maurice about their experiences working with young journalists and if they have the same vigor to cover Black issues as earlier generations. On this edition of Parallax Views, Eddie Murphy has made a much anticipated and critically-acclaimed comeback in the form of Dolemite is My Name, a Netflix-produced biopic of the legendary black comic Rudy Ray Moore. Known as "The King of the Party Records" and "The Godfather of Rap", Rudy Ray Moore, through his kung fu fighting, rappin' and tappin, anti-establishment alter ego Dolemite and various other characters, overcame all odds in the often fickle world of showbiz to entertain audiences with his bawdy, risque-brand of humor. From his comedy albums like Eat Out More Often to his cult classic movies like Dolemite, The Human Tornado, and Petey Wheatstraw, Rudy Ray Moore, despite unfortunately passing away in 2008, lives on in the pantheon of pop culture. His films have been name-checked by such respected and directors as Quentin Tarantino and John Landis. And rappers, specifically and most notably Snoop Dogg, have cited him as a major influence. His diverse fanbase even extends to such figures as Miriam Linna, a founding member of the psychobilly punk band The Cramps, and the notorious juggalo hip hop duo The Insane Clown Posse, who featured Moore, reprising his famous role of Dolemite, in their movie Big Money Hustlas. In other words, Rudy Ray Moore has earned his keep as an iconic figure and Dolemite is My Name serves long-overdue, fitting tribute to the man, the myth, and the legend. Rudy Ray Moore as "Dolemite" Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite is My Name Joining us on this edition of Parallax Views to discuss Dolemite is My Name, Rudy Ray Moore, and black cinema are returning guest Brian Shaughnessy and Casey Gane-McCalla, also known as the rapper "The Mighty Casey" and the author of Inside the CIA's Secret War in Jamaica. Among the topics discussed are our initial thoughts on Dolemite is My Name. We chat about Eddie Murphy's comeback and the ensemble cast that supports him in the movie including Keegan Michael-Peele, Craig Robinson, Chris Rock, and Wesley Snipes. Additionally, we delve into the world of blaxploitation movies from which Rudy Ray Moore, as his alter ego Dolemite, became a star. In particular we reference such films as the Wayans Brothers parody of the genre I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, the films of Mario and Melvin Van Peebles, and, of course, Dolemite. And, in the final portion of our conversation, we discuss the current state of black cinema with the popularity of hit movies like Marvel's Black Panther and Jordan Peele's Get Out. James Stinson And Gerald Donald - Afrofuturist Detroit Electro Special A 1h special from December 2018 on Gerald Donald and James Stinson, the creators of Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, Transllusion, Der Zyklus, Arpanet, Japanese Telecom, and many more cool projects. James Stinson died of heart problems in 2002, but this mix includes Jack People's Laptop Café, which was posthumously released last year on clone's aqualung series sublabel. The mix also includes very good 2015 remasters of Drexciyan classics Wavejumper and Black Sea. Another reason to make the special was the mainstream attention that afrofuturism and black science fiction gathered in 2018 with the release of Marvel's Black Panther. To accentuate the afrofuturist content I originally planned to play (but managed to mess it up) Shifted Phases' Crossing the Sun-Ra Nebula, an homage to space jazz artist Sun Ra, an innovator of afrofuturism through his cult movie Space Is The Place. [School of Movies 2018] Since the original Rocky in 1976 (which is still fantastic more than 40 years on) this saga has been Sylvester Stallone's baby. He directed four of the previous six movies, and wrote and starred in all of them. Then the director of a little-known indie picture called Fruitvale Station which screened at Sundance, comes along with his idea for a story that breathes new life into the series whilst paying respectful homage to the history and characters. That man was Ryan Coogler, and would go on to helm Marvel's Black Panther, but not before he made the best Rocky film so far. One so rich and relevant and fresh it makes Rocky IV somehow better than the collection of montages it was the day before Creed released. Next Week: Colossal Brendan Agnew of Cinapse
The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS The midterm elections produced as much sizzle and racial theater as a Marvel's Black Panther and Shonda Rhimes's Scandal marathon. As Gus T. predicted, Ron DeSantis was declared the victor in the Florida governor's race. While Andrew Gillum hoped to be the black first in Florida, Georgia's Stacey Abrams also lost a closely contested gubernatorial race to a White man. Both contests appear to be headed towards a mandatory recount; none of which suggests these black hopefuls will be taking office. While some Whites chose the ballot, others continue to use the bullet as there was a mass shooting in California that left a dozen dead. When CNN's Don Lemon commented on the threat of White terrorism, a White firefighter branded the journalist a nigger. President Donald J. Trump neutralized a perceived internal threat by requesting the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Session, the former U.S. Senator and Suspected Racist stepped down and was temporarily replaced by Matthew Whitaker. #RacismIsTerrorism INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943#

In this episode of Pic.Think: Film, Sy and George review Marvel's Black Panther. In the first part of this episode, we start off by playing with the idea of totems of our own, as inspired by the totem animals - Bast & Hanuman - of the Wakandan people. In the second part, we then proceed to the review where we compare our impressions of the film both inside and outside of the hype surrounding the film's release. In the third part, we then conclude the review by drawing a similarity between the Wakandan people's access to the natural resource of vibranium and the ecologist Garrett Hardin's "Lifeboat Earth" thought experiment.
