This week's episode is a full-circle moment. We began our podcast five years ago, discussing the romantic entanglements between Scott Summers and Jean Grey as depicted in The Dark Phoenix Saga. Now, we're honored, and in a bit of disbelief, to welcome writer Chris Claremont onto the show. His contributions to the medium have been some of the most significant to our collective imagination, and they directly inspired the personal journey the two of us have been on these last handful of years. Today's conversation directly results from our new partnership with The Harvey Awards, one of the comic industry's oldest and most prestigious ceremonies. As we announced a few days ago via various social media channels, we will host The Harveys this year at the New York Comic Con on October 18th. As individuals who see themselves as champions of comics and those who make them, we're thrilled to accept the responsibility and honor this institution's great work of recognizing outstanding achievement in our most beloved art form. After we got the assignment, The Harveys asked if we wanted to speak with last year's Hall of Fame inductee, Chris Claremont. Never have we answered "Yes!" so quickly. Claremont's time is precious. We caught him in the middle of some serious travel plans and even more serious comic deadlines, but he was gracious enough to find a few minutes to squeeze us into his schedule: seventeen minutes and forty-three seconds, to be precise. With time limited, we set forth on a mission to discuss his thought bubble philosophy. The conversation, however, steers almost immediately into a creator's unique relationship with their creation. We discuss Chris Claremont's evolution as a writer, how he sees the reality of the job, and what he ultimately wants to accomplish with his words. You can stay updated with all things Chris Claremont by following him on Instagram and through his website. Join Frank and Squeaks as they dive into an engaging conversation with Aaron from Fandom Portals, discussing the latest addition to the Geek Freaks Network. They explore the passionate world of fandoms, from Batman's gadgets to the vibrant Star Wars community. The episode also touches on the emotional farewell to the Xbox 360 Marketplace and its legendary games. Lastly, they delve into the new D&D rules, reminiscing about the impact of Game Informer magazine. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 - Introduction and Guest Introduction 00:15 - Aaron's New Podcast: Fandom Portals 01:45 - Most Vocal Fandoms on Social Media 03:25 - First Comic Books that Hooked Us 06:00 - Iconic Comics Shared by Listeners 07:07 - Superman Filming Insights 09:35 - DC's Future and Fan Expectations 13:45 - Deadpool and Wolverine Music Moments 16:00 - Star Wars Skeleton Crew: Goonies Vibes 20:10 - Introducing Kids to Star Wars 25:08 - Xbox 360 Marketplace Closure and Favorite Games 30:10 - The Legacy of Game Informer Magazine 35:15 - New D&D Rules and Their Impact Key Takeaways: Aaron from Fandom Portals emphasizes the importance of community-driven content and positive social media interaction. The Star Wars fandom is highly vocal, with polarizing views that can be navigated respectfully. Iconic comics like X-Men's Dark Phoenix Saga and Savage Dragon have deeply impacted fans. Superman's new film is bringing practical effects back, evoking nostalgia for fans. Deadpool and Wolverine's use of iconic 90s music brings a unique charm to the movie. Star Wars Skeleton Crew aims to capture the adventurous spirit of the Goonies, appealing to both kids and adults. The closure of the Xbox 360 Marketplace marks the end of an era, prompting fond memories of games like Gears of War and Oblivion. Game Informer's legacy as a pioneer in video game journalism remains influential despite its closure. New D&D rules are being introduced with a focus on community feedback and adaptability. Memorable Quotes: Aaron: "The biggest thing about Fandom Portals is just the fact that it's really connected to social media and making social media social again." Squeaks: "I would say arguably PS2 was better than 360. I'm saying it." Frank: "The Xbox 360 was probably the best system ever, and they are closing down the marketplace for that." Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest bombs in film history. In this week's episode, we discuss one of the biggest cinematic flops for 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment, 2019's Dark Phoenix. This is the fourth installment of the prequel films and the 12th installment in the X-Men film series. Dark Phoenix had all the trademarks of a bomb such as numerous re-shoots based on test screenings, studio mergers, uninterested actors, a first-time director, shifting management, and poor marketing. Do all these factors make Dark Phoenix a bomb? Were audiences, critics, and comic book fans too harsh on this version of “The Dark Phoenix Saga?” Download the episode and hear our thoughts!Special thanks to our good friend Jose from Watch / Skip+ for stopping by and helping out with the discussion!Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica ChastainMake sure to check out Jose on Watch/Skip+ and make sure to drop them a review! Also, James, friend of the show, lost his beloved dog - Penny a little bit ago. 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix was supposed to be the movie that finally did justice to one of the comic's most celebrated storylines, the Dark Phoenix Saga by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. It had already been done, to disastrous effect, in 2006's X-Men 3: The Last Stand. Writer-director Simon Kinberg made his directorial debut with this, taking over for Bryan Singer, whose career imploded in the years following X-Men: Apocalypse. While there's no doubt everyone went in with the right intentions, Dark Phoenix went down with a thud when it opened in the summer of 2019. The box office was disastrous, only grossing $65 million domestically, which is a nightmarish haul for a movie that cost at least $200 million.Notably, the fan reaction was terrible, with many saying this take on the Dark Phoenix storyline was only marginally better than the one in The Last Stand. Initially set to kick off a new trilogy, that plan had already been scuttled by the time Dark Phoenix hit theatres. In the time since the movie was filmed and got released, Fox had been sold to Disney, meaning that if the X-Men returned, they would be part of the MCU. When this came out, everyone involved seemed to realize this was the last hurrah for this iconic version of the X-Men, but the reaction from fans was that this heavily re-shot and re-cut movie sent the franchise out with a whimper rather than a bang. So what went wrong? Plenty, as you'll find out in WTF Happened to X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which is written by Gaius Bolling, edited by Cesar Gabriel, and narrated by Mathew Plale. Is X-Men: Dark Phoenix as bad as they say? Let us know in the comments!

The awesome age of apocalypse? The heartbreaking fatal attractions?? Or maybe it's the insane Inferno?? Well those are all amazing of course but what if I told you that there was one storyline that came years before them all and is STILL as impactful today as it was in 1980?? That's right true believers, that's the year Stan “the Man” Lee blessed us with The Dark Phoenix Saga, a nine issue comic masterpiece from the epic creative team of Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Join James, Joe and myself (Arco) as we take the deepest dive into the origins of the fieriest of redheads, The Phoenix! But wait!! There's more!! You can also use Comixology, or buy the trades from your local comic book shop (the preferred method, if we're being honest). Be sure to check with your local library to see if they have them there! You can find one using this site (https://www.comicshoplocator.com/) Gary is on Twitter (https://twitter.com/garybuh), and Jeremy is too (https://twitter.com/jggreer). Duckfeed is on Patreon (https://patreon.com/duckfeedtv), which is a great place to support the show.
