If you're an aspiring writer or simply a fan of a good story, you don't want to miss this week's #LetsTalkUNLV episode. Featuring special guest Colette LaBouff, the Executive Director of Black Mountain Institute, Let's Talk's latest episode focuses on the gift of story and how writers at UNLV can get support from BMI to pursue their passion. Listen to hear from Colette LaBouff about what it takes to become a writer, the important work the BMI does, and how students can get involved! About Black Mountain Institute: Black Mountain Institute at UNLV champions writers and storytellers through programs, fellowships and community engagement. We make space for meaningful collaborations and conversations; we understand service as vital. We ask questions about access, the environment, and labor. We find our home in Las Vegas–a place of hospitality in the middle of a desert. Between the manufactured and natural, urban and wide expanse, built and rebuilt, bounty and scarcity, we live within narratives of destruction and preservation. From the brightest spot on the planet, Black Mountain Institute amplifies writing and artistic expression to connect us to each other in the Las Vegas Valley, the Southwest, and beyond.

In the second of The Eastern Front's two-part series on Black Sea security, Giselle, Dalibor, and Iulia speak with Admiral James Foggo (ret.), dean for the Center for Maritime Strategy, about strategies for enhancing freedom of navigation in the Black Sea. Are we currently experiencing a Russian blockade of the Black Sea? How should the US respond to Russian actions in order to deter future altercations, particularly against commercial ships? What should a NATO presence in the Black Sea look like? And what can NATO member states who are feeling the brunt of Russian attacks, such as Bulgaria and Romania, do to transition from small drone warfare to a fully-fledged maritime security deterrence posture? Show notes: Sign up for The Eastern Front's bi-weekly newsletter here and follow us on Twitter here.
Russia is facing global criticism for its recent attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube river and the decision to pull out of a July 2022 UN-brokered deal that enabled Ukrainian grain to be exported through the Black Sea. Immediately following the pullout, Russian authorities warned they would not be able to guarantee the security of vessels in the Black Sea. On this episode of The Eastern Front, Giselle, Dalibor, and Iulia speak with Thea Dunlevie, senior analyst at the Center for Maritime Strategy, to discuss why we must continue paying attention to Black Sea security. Should we expect to see more Russian attacks on Ukrainian and ally maritime infrastructure? Does NATO have a deterrence strategy? What might be the global implications of failing to properly secure the Black Sea? Show notes: Sign up for The Eastern Front's bi-weekly newsletter here and follow us on Twitter here. I promised you a part 2 and here it is! This episode continues the discussion of Anthem: Social Movements and the Sound of Solidarity in the African Diaspora with Professor Shana Redmond. The anthems this time around are: 01:25 - “We Shall Overcome” Before it was an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement, Black women used the song to fuel the Charleston tobacco strike. Their efforts brought the song into the Civil Rights Movement. 15:44 - “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” is an anthem signaling the change from nonviolence to Black power both for Nina Simone and for Black People. 33:14 - "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" a song that spans the long history of South African apartheid. The African National Congress spread the song and its call for a liberated Africa around the world.
