In a rare surfacing in the contemporary world, JF and Phil discuss a film that has just been released. Bryn Chainey's Rabbit Trap is psychological horror in the tradition of Repulsion, Jacob's Ladder, and Angel Heart. But it is more: a metaphysical film exploring the mystery of sound and the Otherworld of Faerie—an excursion into that weird country, so deftly explored by Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood, where wonder and terror perform their eldritch duets. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari did more than inspire a whole kind of cinema-it also became the great-grandparent of a genre. The mind-bending dive into the psyche genre that saw three of its greatest examples all influence each other: Ingmar Bergman's 1966 Persona which begat in many ways Robert Altman's 1977 3 Women. And all those movies consciously or unconsciously begat David Lynch's 2001 masterpiece Mulholland Drive. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill takes a look at the journey of inspiration of all these movies as well as side trips to other great examples of the genre like David Fincher's Fight Club, Roman Polanski's Repulsion, and Darren Aronovsky's Black Swan.
In this episode, we review our 8th-ranked film for 1965, a psychological thriller directed by Roman Polanski and starring Catherine Deneuve as a psychotic manicurist. Support this project on Patreon!
If Radical Research exists to dissect the most esoteric and weird and unique recordings in the spheres of rock and metal, then we are sorely overdue to feature the singular debut by Type O Negative. 'Slow, Deep and Hard' began life as Repulsion's one and only demo, 'None More Negative,' recorded in late 1989 and early 1990. After a name change and a contract with Roadrunner Records, the album was re-mastered, the song order re-configured, and the 7-minute "Glass Walls of Limbo (Dance Mix)" added, 'Slow, Deep and Hard' was born. Join us as we plunge into all the blood, fire and death of this completely unique album in the Type O Negative discography. Note I: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Better grab something to write with before you hit play on this one. In this extra-long episode, we dive into a variety of horror sub-genres and each pick a title that we think defines that category. Not necessarily the best film, but one that captures the essence of the sub-genre in a meaningful way. To help us take on this ridiculously huge (but fun) challenge, we've brought back Aaron Christensen—aka Dr. AC—to join the conversation. If you're new to the genre, this one's especially for you. If you've been around a few years (or decades) we think the conversation is still worth your time, and we hope that you consider giving a few of these a revisit. Time to start that new watchlist! All set? Notes ready? Coffee or energy drink in hand? Then hit play! This year, Japanese black metal legends Sigh celebrate 35 years of existence. With a career that has seen the release of 12 studio albums, countless worldwide shows, and a relentless dedication to pushing musical boundaries, they have firmly cemented their status as one of the most revered and influential cult acts in extreme metal. To celebrate, Sigh have revisited their 2007 opus, Hangman's Hymn. A compositional powerhouse in its own right, Hangman's Hymn was notably Sigh's first concept album, blending fast 80s thrash metal influences from bands like Wehrmacht, Sarcofago, and Repulsion with classical music—particularly German symphonies. However, Hangman's Hymn was often seen as not fully meeting the band's own standards in terms of execution and production. As a result, frontman Mirai Kawashima took it upon himself to do justice to this at times overlooked masterpiece of intricate songwriting by re-recording it with the current Sigh sound and delivery, under the title I Saw the World's End – Hangman's Hymn MMXXV. It was released via Peaceville on 13th June. Doing the impossible, turning an already iconic album into something even better, Sigh's decision to re-record this beloved record has proven to be a genius move. Not only because its unique style and structure has been made richer and bolder thanks to modern technology, but because a whole new set of listeners are going to experience this album's brilliance for the first time, and it is brilliant. Interview by Kris PetersMuch has changed in the Sinsaenum camp since the release of Repulsion for Humanity in 2018, with the loss of drummer Joey Jordison central to the personal tragedy, which was compounded by the loss of guitarist and founding member Frédéric Leclercq's father as well.It has been a tumultuous period for the band, who rightfully took their time with their third album, but the results have seen the extreme metal supergroup of sorts produce what is arguably their finest body of work to date with In Devastation, which will be unleashed on August 8.Joining Leclercq on this latest chapter are returning members Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Sean Zatorsky (Dååth), Stéphane Buriez (Loudblast), and Heimoth (Seth). Stepping in behind the kit is Andre Joyzi, formerly Jordison's drum tech and a trusted member of the band's touring family - chosen not only for his skills, but for the emotional connection he brings to continuing Jordison's legacy.HEAVY spoke with Leclercq earlier today to find out more about the new album and the personal nature of the music."We've been working on the album for quite a while," he began. "The previous one, Repulsion for Humanity, came out in 2018, and a lot happened in the meantime, so it's been a while, but we released a single a few weeks ago, and it's good to see that the reaction has been good. Throughout the years like it seems like people didn't forget about us, so it's good."We asked Leclercq to dive deeper into In Devastation musically."I think the first album was a lot closer to death metal, like paying tribute to the genre," he measured. "The second album was angry and incorporated more elements of Pantera; a bit more groove and whatnot, and for this one I started writing a good portion of the music in 2019 and there was no there was no agenda in the sense that I just wanted to write music without saying it has to be like this or be like that. There was no limitations. The base would be death metal, but then add whatever I wanted to. Because, why not?"In the full interview, Frédéric highlighted In Devastation's emotional depth and some new sonic elements, including clean vocals and instruments such as sitar and cello, while maintaining its death metal roots. We discussed the emotional feelings of playing such personal songs live and the impactful nature of the music, why the album title track was released as the first single, new drummer Andre Joyzi and what he brings to Sinsaenum, the importance of welcoming someone that has had past experience and connection with the band, with Joyzi having been Joey Jordison's personal drum tech, touring plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome to today's episode where we explore the pivotal role your retreat website plays in attracting the right guests and repelling those who aren't a fit. It's about more than just filling spaces—it's about creating an environment where every participant is precisely where they need to be. Why Repulsion Is as Important as Attraction In the retreat business, it's crucial to understand that not every interested person should become a guest. Tailoring your website's message helps ensure that only those aligned with the retreat's goals feel compelled to attend, while those looking for something different know to look elsewhere. This focus prevents future dissatisfaction and creates a harmonious group dynamic that enhances the retreat experience for everyone. Segment 1: Targeted Messaging for Ideal Guests Your website should communicate directly to your desired attendees. For instance, if your retreat is aimed at women seeking spiritual growth, your message should clearly invite those who are looking for deep spiritual work and subtly discourage those in search of a light vacation. This targeted approach helps in attracting a like-minded audience, ensuring that every participant is engaged and invested in the retreat's offerings. Segment 2: Defining Who Your Retreat Is Not For Being explicit about who should not attend can be just as important as detailing who should. Clearly stating who the retreat isn't for can prevent potential misalignment and ensure that your guests are harmoniously matched with what you offer, enhancing satisfaction for both you and them. Segment 3: Tone and Imagery The tone and imagery of your website should reflect the nature of your retreat. Whether it's bold and energetic or calm and soothing, make sure your language and visuals resonate with the energy of the experience you're offering. This coherence between what you portray and what you deliver is key to meeting and exceeding expectations. Segment 4: Clear Calls to Action Make it easy for the right people to take the next step. Whether it's applying, booking a spot, or joining a waitlist, clear calls to action reduce hurdles in the conversion process, making it seamless for guests to commit. Conclusion: Clarity in Marketing Ultimately, the most effective retreat websites are those that dare to be clear and specific. They understand their audience and speak directly to them, setting the stage for retreats filled with guests who are exactly right for what you offer. Tune in as we dive deeper into each of these aspects, providing you with actionable insights to enhance your retreat website and ensure it works effectively as the first filter in creating transformative retreat experiences. Kenny Hickey joins the Talk Toomey podcast to discuss *Sun Don't Shine* and their latest single, "The Promise Song." He shares the story of Johnny Kelly's unexpected allergic reaction to a bee sting, which landed him in urgent care. Kenny talks about the band's songwriting process, recording challenges, and the decision to change their name from *Eye Am* due to trademark issues. He also reflects on the difficulties of being a frontman and the importance of maintaining a raw, natural sound in their music. The discussion covers the evolution of the name "Type O Negative", which went through multiple changes, including "New Minority" and "Repulsion," before settling on "Type O Negative," inspired by tattoos and blood type. They reminisce about the early hardcore scene and how the band's imagery was influenced by negative symbolism. The conversation shifts to the band's upcoming plans, revealing that they are focusing on writing and recording a full-length album instead of an EP. They reflect on the longevity of their peers, like Biohazard and Life of Agony, and the realities of aging as musicians. The chat ends with thoughts on nostalgia, band reunions, and the impact of legacy acts like Pantera. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. Debuting in competition at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival was British thriller Symptoms from Catalan director José Ramón Larraz, a difficult-to-synopsize terror tone poem featuring Angela Pleasence being threatened by psychosexual hallucinations and a peeping odd-job man. Joining us to rake the leaves of this moody manor are Dan Pullen and Bradley J. Kornish of the Movies from Hell website and podcast who give their opinions on Spanish genre directors of the decade, the film's place among hysterical women movies like Repulsion and how horror movies were beginning to evolve in 1974. It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1965 was a low rent year for horror movies on the whole but some younger hot shot directors were beginning to change things. A modern flavour was evident in a few of the picks. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1965? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several shots of whisky and a 4+ hour running time split over 3 episodes. This is 1965, A Year In Horror. Synopsis A woman called Darling is hired to house sit at a fancy, old, big haunted house in the middle of New York City. As she spends her days alone, she figures out the house's ghostly past and slowly succumbs to the madness of the house's, and her own, lore. Review I first watched this movie back in high school and thought it was the epitome of slow burn, creepy, woman-goes-insane horror films. As I have a lot more horror movie experience now (and film experience in general), I realize that this is basically a rip off of Repulsion (1965). This isn't to say it's a bad movie by any means; the many jump cuts and jump scares keep you on your toes (it could be argued that there are too many of these quick scenes), and there is an overall eerie feeling that is hard to shake once you finish. But, it's not the best movie of a woman going insane. There are plenty of those, horror or not, that execute the trope a lot better than this one did. The first act is boring as all hell but the second and third ramp up the action just a little bit, and the main actress Lauren Ashely Carter is a very good Kristen Stewart type. Contrary to how I sound, I do enjoy this film, just not as much as I did when I was 16. Score 6/10

Michael A talks to one of the pioneers of Grindcore, metal legend Scott Carlson, bassist and singer of the influential band that almost wasn't, Flint's own Repulsion. They talk about meeting in the 80s and bonding over Redd Kross, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone, Scott spins tales of metal madness, failure and surprise delayed success, and they're left with more questions than answers about Faygo Rock 'n' Rye. Will Repulsion make another album? Scott has an answer. Flint is one of the most unique cities in the world, with a vibe and a heart like no other. Any musician who plays here is somehow transformed by it. This podcast explores the experiences of those musicians, visitors or native Flintoids, both onstage and off. We'll check out some of their music, look at their history in my hometown of Flint, and have a few laughs along the way. We call it The Flint Connection. It's time to go vintage with our theme of WOMEN IN CRISIS and today's movie discussion involves a certain director who should know a little something about that type of thing. Yes, we are definitely talking about Roman Polanski and his 1965 film, “REPULSION”, is his first English speaking film. It stars Catherine Deneuve as a young and beautiful French woman in London making her way while living with her sister. All the men are drawn to her. Many pine for her. They want to constantly be around her. The problem? She's disgusted by them. What seeks to keep and “protect” her also repulses her. She might be losing it a bit. That's one thing you will see a lot of this month. Women losing their mind. We're not even halfway though and it's been 90% that. The rest of the week will be no different. Poor Carol. Can't these men just leave her alone? Polanski is a creep but this movie is quite good and you can watch it for nothing here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7znfbq Subscribe to us on YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuJf3lkRI-BLUTsLI_ehOsg Contact us here: MOVIEHUMPERS@gmail.com Hear us on podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6o6PSNJFGXJeENgqtPY4h7 Our OG podcast “Documenteers”: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/documenteers-the-documentary-podcast/id1321652249 Soundcloud feed: https://soundcloud.com/documenteers Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/culturewrought

Adam works with a client to introduce the emotions of disgust and repulsion into thoughts that facilitate the desire to move away from a toxic relationship rather than move toward it. Adam harnesses disgusting smells, visual anchors and sounds to create an "away from" motivation strategy and to feel worthy to not need love or connection from unworthy sources.
