One minute, you're smitten. The next, you're watching someone pronounce “salmon” with the L and wondering how fast you can escape. This week, Bryde teaches Jeremie all about “the ick”—that sudden, irrational wave of disgust that can turn attraction into repulsion in an instant. Where does it come from? Is it evolutionary self-protection or just our brains being dramatic? From Love Island to TikTok trends, we explore how the ick has evolved, its connection to cringe, and why it might be keeping modern daters single. Plus, a rapid-fire game of “Ick or Red Flag?” that will have you questioning everything. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

EP 212 The Art of Attraction and Repulsion: Crafting Your Retreat Website

Happy Hour Podcast with Dee and Shannon

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2025 13:53

Welcome to today's episode where we explore the pivotal role your retreat website plays in attracting the right guests and repelling those who aren't a fit. It's about more than just filling spaces—it's about creating an environment where every participant is precisely where they need to be. Why Repulsion Is as Important as Attraction In the retreat business, it's crucial to understand that not every interested person should become a guest. Tailoring your website's message helps ensure that only those aligned with the retreat's goals feel compelled to attend, while those looking for something different know to look elsewhere. This focus prevents future dissatisfaction and creates a harmonious group dynamic that enhances the retreat experience for everyone. Segment 1: Targeted Messaging for Ideal Guests Your website should communicate directly to your desired attendees. For instance, if your retreat is aimed at women seeking spiritual growth, your message should clearly invite those who are looking for deep spiritual work and subtly discourage those in search of a light vacation. This targeted approach helps in attracting a like-minded audience, ensuring that every participant is engaged and invested in the retreat's offerings. Segment 2: Defining Who Your Retreat Is Not For Being explicit about who should not attend can be just as important as detailing who should. Clearly stating who the retreat isn't for can prevent potential misalignment and ensure that your guests are harmoniously matched with what you offer, enhancing satisfaction for both you and them. Segment 3: Tone and Imagery The tone and imagery of your website should reflect the nature of your retreat. Whether it's bold and energetic or calm and soothing, make sure your language and visuals resonate with the energy of the experience you're offering. This coherence between what you portray and what you deliver is key to meeting and exceeding expectations. Segment 4: Clear Calls to Action Make it easy for the right people to take the next step. Whether it's applying, booking a spot, or joining a waitlist, clear calls to action reduce hurdles in the conversion process, making it seamless for guests to commit. Conclusion: Clarity in Marketing Ultimately, the most effective retreat websites are those that dare to be clear and specific. They understand their audience and speak directly to them, setting the stage for retreats filled with guests who are exactly right for what you offer. Tune in as we dive deeper into each of these aspects, providing you with actionable insights to enhance your retreat website and ensure it works effectively as the first filter in creating transformative retreat experiences.   The Retreat Leaders Podcast Resources and Links: Learn to Host Retreats Join our Retreat Leader Membership Join our private Facebook Group Top 5 Marketing Tools Free Guide   Thanks for tuning into the Retreat Leaders Podcast. Kenny Hickey joins the Talk Toomey podcast to discuss *Sun Don't Shine* and their latest single, "The Promise Song." He shares the story of Johnny Kelly's unexpected allergic reaction to a bee sting, which landed him in urgent care. Kenny talks about the band's songwriting process, recording challenges, and the decision to change their name from *Eye Am* due to trademark issues. He also reflects on the difficulties of being a frontman and the importance of maintaining a raw, natural sound in their music. The discussion covers the evolution of the name "Type O Negative", which went through multiple changes, including "New Minority" and "Repulsion," before settling on "Type O Negative," inspired by tattoos and blood type. They reminisce about the early hardcore scene and how the band's imagery was influenced by negative symbolism. The conversation shifts to the band's upcoming plans, revealing that they are focusing on writing and recording a full-length album instead of an EP. They reflect on the longevity of their peers, like Biohazard and Life of Agony, and the realities of aging as musicians. The chat ends with thoughts on nostalgia, band reunions, and the impact of legacy acts like Pantera. Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Support Toomey on Patreon www.patreon.com/talktoomey Shop Talk Toomey Depop www.depop.com/talktoomey Subscribe to Talk Toomey on YouTube for in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. #talktoomey #typeonegative #sundontshine #kennyhickey

Synopsis A woman called Darling is hired to house sit at a fancy, old, big haunted house in the middle of New York City. As she spends her days alone, she figures out the house's ghostly past and slowly succumbs to the madness of the house's, and her own, lore. Review I first watched this movie back in high school and thought it was the epitome of slow burn, creepy, woman-goes-insane horror films. As I have a lot more horror movie experience now (and film experience in general), I realize that this is basically a rip off of Repulsion (1965). This isn't to say it's a bad movie by any means; the many jump cuts and jump scares keep you on your toes (it could be argued that there are too many of these quick scenes), and there is an overall eerie feeling that is hard to shake once you finish. But, it's not the best movie of a woman going insane. There are plenty of those, horror or not, that execute the trope a lot better than this one did. The first act is boring as all hell but the second and third ramp up the action just a little bit, and the main actress Lauren Ashely Carter is a very good Kristen Stewart type. Contrary to how I sound, I do enjoy this film, just not as much as I did when I was 16. Score 6/10

Obviously, many of us film fans see movies in theaters througout the year, whether it be at a national chain or at an independent, arthouse theater - or both. Some of us are even hitting film festivals, special screenings, and for the truly unhinged cinephiles, film marathons. For these kind of events to happen though, there have to be some mad geniuses behind the scenes. Those people are film programmers, and they do so much for our the culture of our fandom; from tracking down film the best quality prints available, to figuring out who owns the rights, to actually making the screenings happen. A lot of times their success comes down to the sheer passion they have for these offbeat, awkward, or just downright strange and fucked up motion pictures that makes them want to pass that along to new viewers. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

It's time to go vintage with our theme of WOMEN IN CRISIS and today's movie discussion involves a certain director who should know a little something about that type of thing. Yes, we are definitely talking about Roman Polanski and his 1965 film, “REPULSION”, is his first English speaking film. It stars Catherine Deneuve as a young and beautiful French woman in London making her way while living with her sister. All the men are drawn to her. Many pine for her. They want to constantly be around her. The problem? She's disgusted by them. What seeks to keep and “protect” her also repulses her. She might be losing it a bit. That's one thing you will see a lot of this month. Women losing their mind. We're not even halfway though and it's been 90% that. The rest of the week will be no different. Poor Carol. Can't these men just leave her alone? Polanski is a creep but this movie is quite good and you can watch it for nothing here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7znfbq Subscribe to us on YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuJf3lkRI-BLUTsLI_ehOsg Contact us here: MOVIEHUMPERS@gmail.com Hear us on podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6o6PSNJFGXJeENgqtPY4h7 Our OG podcast “Documenteers”: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/documenteers-the-documentary-podcast/id1321652249 Soundcloud feed: https://soundcloud.com/documenteers Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/culturewrought

8 years ago this week our episode on Roman Polanski's Knife in the Water posted and we had a discussion about the director's misogyny. Two years ago this month, we talked about Roman Polanski's Repulsion and had a discussion about the director's misogyny. Now our third of his movies, Cul-de-sac (1966), offers us a chance to armchair psychoanalyze the man once again, as it becomes clear that his misogyny stems from his understanding all human relationships as power-struggles that someone must win. It is the most interesting to us Polanski movie we've seen so far, certainly, resting mostly on the atmosphere of it's setting and the fact that this crime thriller maybe started life as a backdoor adaptation of Waiting for Godot. But also, what malevolent coincidence have we encountered that we talk about Polanski films during the holidays.

Tom, Brittany and Tevin all battled the elements on their way into the studio for today's show, and you're going to hear about it. In the first hour, SKOR North's Judd Zulgad talks about the Timberwolves' disappointing start to the season and the fanbase's new found hope for the Vikings to turn their season around, and KSTP's Chris Egert on the mass shooting that happened in Maine on Wednesday night. Hour #2 sees the crew come to find out that Tom has never had a McFlurry or a Blizzard, and discuss a list of places women refuse to go on a first date. In hour #3, we find out what Minnesotans are afraid of. No, it's not missing fishing opener. Probably because there's no word for that. Kristyn Burtt's fear is that they'll keep making Marvel movies, and she's joined by the majority of Gen Z. On the Family, things aren't going so well in the world. People are shooting each other, different people are blowing each other up, and the weed you take to cope is just making things worse. So what do you do? Watch animals be funny, of course. There's a reason cat videos predate the 20th century. Ian and AC have had enough of controversial topics in film criticism, which is why this month's journey Beyond Hammerland centers on Roman Polanski's 1965 thriller, Repulsion!Catherine Deneuve stars as Carol, a young Belgian woman living in London with her older sister, Helen (Yvonne Furneaux). Carol's days are filled with leering men, awkward exchanges with women, and a general sense that her world is literally splitting apart. This masterful voyage into obsession, perception, and madness is sure to be a Rorschach test for viewers, and the ensuing conversation may prove equally divisive. In this spoilerific installment, the guys discuss their anxiety (or lack thereof) over reconciling Polanski's influential and Oscar-nominated prowess as a mood-setter and visual storyteller--versus the heinous 1977 criminal conviction that compelled him to flee the United States to avoid sentencing. Ian and AC also talk about the film's point of view regarding the battle of the sexes, and how it resonates as an odd companion piece to Greta Gerwig's Barbie nearly 60 years later!Plus AC teases "Scare-a-Thon 2023", which kicks off today (October 1st)!(This episode was supposed to come out earlier, but Ian's iffy Internet necessitated a lot more editing than usual.)Show Links:Watch the Repulsion trailer.Listen to Ian and AC discuss Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman (referenced in the show).Check out AC's trailer for the 2023 "Scare-a-Thon".Learn more about "Scare-a-Thon 2023" at Horror 101 w/ Dr. AC.And donate directly to the Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Project via AC's "Scare-a-Thon" link!Subscribe to AC's YouTube channel, which is positively dripping with fiendishly fresh content!

Today on Bloodhaus, it's Josh's favorite movie of all time: Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. From wiki: “Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel of the same name. The film stars Mia Farrow as a young (soon pregnant) wife living in Manhattan who comes to suspect that her elderly neighbors are members of a Satanic cult and are grooming her in order to use her baby for their rituals. The film's supporting cast includes John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Patsy Kelly, Angela Dorian, and, in his feature film debut, Charles Grodin. “ But first: which animal is the most punk? Also, Drusilla saw Asteroid City and they discuss Wes Anderson, who created the millennial aesthetic. (The infamous pickle cut comes up, too.) Plus! We are so, so excited about Vidiots! (https://vidiotsfoundation.org/) Josh was at Portland Horror Fest and it won an award! He also saw a feature called T Blockers by a trans teen girl and was blown away. He also watched 1981's Dark Night of the Scarecrow and it really scared him. On Rosemary's Baby, they also discuss the following: also, The Tenant, Cul De Sac, Chinatown, Repulsion, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Bonnie & Clyde, Robert Evans, William Castle, The Kid Stays in the Picture, Documentary Now!, Mia Farrow's taste in men, Ruth Gordon, gaslighting, Buñuel, Straw Dogs, rape revenge fantasies, A Clockwork Orange, folk horror, Every Which Way But Loose, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Mikey & Nicky, Cruising, and more! NEXT WEEK: The Lodge (2019) Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkelJoshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel
