The novel follows wilderness survival expert Therese Palmer and Texas Ranger Blaine as they search for a kidnapped Russian girl and uncover far more than they expected. DiAnn explains how extensive firsthand research—including visiting the remote Dog Canyon area and studying wilderness survival—helps her create believable settings and characters. For DiAnn, storytelling is more than entertainment. She views writing as a form of ministry and intentionally brings a Christian worldview into her stories, showing characters confronting danger, uncertainty, and difficult choices while recognizing the sovereignty of God.DiAnn also shares the story behind her writing career. After years of wanting to become a writer, her husband challenged her in 1996 to pursue writing full time and get something published within a year. She accepted the challenge, sold her first book, and never returned to her previous career. At the time of this interview, she says she is working on book 105.She discusses the discipline required to become a professional writer: researching characters, studying successful books, learning the craft, setting daily word-count goals, staying aware of changes in publishing, praying, and continuing to grow.DiAnn closes with a powerful challenge:Whatever your age or stage of life, do not ignore the dream that refuses to let you go. Romans 1:18–32 reveals that humanity's deepest problem is rejecting what we know about God. Creation points to His power and truth, yet people suppress that truth and exchange the Creator for created things. This idolatry turns good things into ultimate things, producing desires that never satisfy and leading to greater sin. God's wrath is seen in His “giving them over,” allowing people to pursue what they have chosen and experience the destructive consequences. Paul's list of sins is meant to be a mirror for everyone, exposing the universal tendency to replace God with something else. The answer is not better arguments, culture, or human effort, but repentance and Christ. When we turn back to God, the Holy Spirit begins replacing the fruit of selfishness and sin with love, joy, peace, and self-control. Romans 1 shows the downward path of sin: reject God → replace God → distorted desires → distorted thinking → destructive living. The Gospel reverses that path by bringing us back to the Creator, restoring our hearts and transforming how we live.

1 Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. 2 A good man shall obtain favor from Yahweh, but he will condemn a man of wicked devices. 3 A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. 4 A worthy woman is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones. 5 The thoughts of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful. 6The words of the wicked are about lying in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them. 7 The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand. 8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom, but he who has a warped mind shall be despised. 9 Better is he who is lightly esteemed, and has a servant, than he who honors himself, and lacks bread. 10 A righteous man respects the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. 11 He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who chases fantasies is void of understanding. 12 The wicked desires the plunder of evil men, but the root of the righteous flourishes. 13 An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the righteous shall come out of trouble. 14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth. The work of a man's hands shall be rewarded to him. 15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who is wise listens to counsel. 16 A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent. 17 He who is truthful testifies honestly, but a false witness lies. 18 There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals. 19 Truth's lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only momentary. 20 Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil, but joy comes to the promoters of peace. 21 No mischief shall happen to the righteous, but the wicked shall be filled with evil. 22 Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight. 23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge, but the hearts of fools proclaim foolishness. 24 The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, but laziness ends in slave labor. 25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad. 26 A righteous person is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. 27 The slothful man doesn't roast his game, but the possessions of diligent men are prized. 28 In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death. The sermon contrasts the rampant wickedness and total depravity of a post-Christian culture with the absolute goodness, steadfast love, and righteousness of God. Drawing from Psalm 36, it argues that believers must not be despondent over societal decay but should recognize this as the consistent state of humanity apart from grace. The preacher emphasizes that God's character provides a secure refuge and true justice, offering an antidote to the world's shifting moral standards. Believers are called to boldly proclaim the gospel and Christ's lordship in their spheres of influence rather than retreating into nostalgia or silence. Ultimately, the message encourages finding present joy and hope in God's covenant faithfulness despite living in dark times.

He points to a fix that would raise the bar for federal grand-jury indictments, and explains why he believes that Donald Trump's disputed I.R.S. settlement may not survive legal scrutiny. He also makes the case, drawn from his new book, “Liar's Kingdom: How to Stop Trump's Deceit and Save America,” for treating political lying itself as a problem that the law can address. “We have to be thinking about big, bold ideas,” Weissmann says. Most Enneagram teaching is very good at describing what's wrong with you. This episode is about what's right. Every Enneagram type has a Passion — the chief emotional distortion the ego runs when it's disconnected from its truest self. Anger for the One. Pride for the Two. Deceit for the Three. Each of the nine types has one, and most of us have spent a lot of energy trying to manage ours without quite knowing what it is. But every type also has a Virtue. Not a moral achievement you add on top — a quality that naturally arises in the heart when the Passion loosens its grip. Serenity. Humility. Authenticity. Equanimity. Non-Attachment. Courage. Sobriety. Innocence. Right Action. These aren't things you build. They're things that emerge when you stop being in the way of yourself. In this final episode of the Enneagram Essentials series, Anthony and I walk through all nine Passions and their corresponding Virtues. I share what Equanimity feels like in my own life as a Four — when I manage to access it — and we close with two honest answers to the question of how any of this actually becomes real: contemplative practice, and a particular kind of willingness to stop running from pain. This is a hopeful episode. Everything in the series has been building toward this. The Enneagram has always been pointing here.   This is Episode 5 of 5 in the Enneagram Essentials series. Today on the show, Joe breaks down Dr. Anthony Fauci's explosive appearance on Capitol Hill, where visible nerves and shaking hands told the real story before he even uttered a word. From Senator Josh Hawley calling out systemic obstruction to Senator Rand Paul delivering a searing indictment on how arrogance, secrecy, and censorship destroyed public trust, we expose the deep state's crumbling defense. Plus, we dig into the bizarre paper trail surrounding Fauci's federal pardon—specifically why it traces back to 2014, the exact same year the NIH approved grant funding for bat coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. As questions mount, we ask the hard question: a federal pardon might shield him from Washington, but are state prosecutors ready to step up?Former FBI agent, whistleblower, and podcaster Kyle Seraphin joins Joe in the studio to pull back the curtain on bureaucratic warfare and institutional decay. Seraphin reacts to Fauci's testimony, dissects the lingering skepticism surrounding Senator Mitch McConnell's staged "proof of life" photo ops, and dives into shocking CIA whistleblower allegations revealing illegal surveillance against current leaders like Tulsi Gabbard. Furthermore, Kyle brings his tactical background to the table to analyze the Charlie Kirk assassination attempt, questioning official narratives and breaking down the physical real-world capabilities required for such an operation.Joe confronts the glaring double standards reshaping American life. While everyday families struggle to get basic life-saving medications approved by insurance, taxpayer dollars across dozens of states are quietly funding 100% free gender-affirming surgeries through Medicaid. Meanwhile in New York, socialist policy takes center stage as Mayor Zohran Mamdani pushes government-run grocery stores—threatening small business survival while imposing selective, government-controlled product restrictions. Finally, as TPS expires for Haitian migrants and ICE agents face daily hostility on the ground, Joe takes a hard look at the reality of federal deportations and where the country heads next.

Lou, not a romance fan, says the book didn't change his view of romance novels and critiques passive characters, trope-heavy misunderstandings, and underdeveloped worldbuilding, especially the vague setting and limited exploration of the warring gods Dakra and Enva. Jesse enjoys the premise of a WWI-like magical war, likes the characters and love story, and praises elements like the magic typewriters, Roman's conflict with his family, and supportive elders. The group debates the typewriters as a plot device, the gods' role in the war, and the twist involving Iris's brother Forest, then speculates about where the sequel Ruthless Vows will take the story. 00:00 Intro and Pick 01:15 Lou Romance Skeptic 02:22 Jesse Loves Premise 05:26 Lou Worldbuilding Critique 08:04 Why This Book 12:15 Comfort Food Debate 19:10 Magic Typewriters 24:43 Deceit and Tropes 29:05 Genre Tropes Talk 31:11 Flanagan Does Carrie 31:51 Gods And War Lore 35:04 Worldbuilding Complaints 38:53 Forest Twist Reveal 43:47 Romance Tropes Debate 48:29 Dakra Cold Or Hot 49:18 Predictions Next Book 51:28 Wrap Up And Thanks 56:37 Where To Find Us Learn more about your ad choices. Join MS NOW legal analyst Andrew Weissmann — a lead prosecutor in Robert Mueller's Special Counsel's Office and FBI General Counsel — with MS NOW anchor Lawrence O'Donnell for a conversation about the political culture of deceit that threatens to undermine our democracy. These are the subject of Weissmann's new book, Liar's Kingdom: How to Stop Trump's Deceit and Save America. Political lies, Andrew Weissmann writes, are foundational to Donald Trump's policies: they fuel his administration's weaponization of law enforcement and unlawful deportation of immigrants, among other things. Other politicians, inspired by Trump's success, have flooded the public square with their own falsehoods. And as political lies grow and are widely accepted, Weissmann discusses how they threaten the very foundation of our democracy. But as dire as this crisis is, we are not helpless — Weissmann describes tools to vindicate the public's right to the truth, using examples from around the globe as models we can emulate. In a conversation with MS NOW's Lawrence O'Donnell, hear Weissmann discuss his revelatory new book — a legal guide and citizen's playbook for how to prevent liars from holding office in the future. Don't miss this urgent conversation about how to save democracy from the demagogues.

One of the challenges of modern legal journalism is recalling that case law, doctrine, and Supreme Court decisions aren't a complete picture, without including the lived realities of the people whose lives and communities are often turned upside down by changes in the law.On Tuesday night, the Supreme Court's far-right flank vastly expanded its holding in Louisiana v. Callais to make it harder, if not impossible, to challenge racist voting maps designed to suppress Black votes. The shadow-docket decision misrepresented its own holding in Callais and discarded a case it had already decided. With the conservative supermajority tossing a lower-court panel's finding in Allen v. Milligan and further erasing voting rights for Black Americans across the country, Amicus revisits our 2022 conversation with Evan Milligan, the named plaintiff, at the time the case first came to the high court. Milligan explained what's at stake for the very real people living in gerrymandered districts in Alabama's Black Belt region; a gerrymander blessed this week that was forbidden just three years ago.Later, Dahlia Lithwick talks with Andrew Weissmann, an MS NOW legal analyst, NYU law professor, and veteran federal prosecutor who served as lead prosecutor under special counsel Robert S. Mueller and as chief of the DOJ's Fraud Section. Even with Opinionpalooza heating up at the high court, Weissmann pauses to analyze a busy week in democratic dismantling at the Justice Department and on Capitol Hill. (3) Finally, the pair shifts to Persian diplomacy and the "dispensation for deception." Germanicus explains how Iranuses strategic deceit to survive existential threats, specifically aiming to separate United States interests from Israel. They speculate that modern leaders may settle conflicts through informal "backdoor handshakes" or social media posts rather than traditional documents. Drawing on Byzantine history, they suggest appeasement and payoffs can be more effective than direct combat. The dialogue ends with the Spartan legend of a boy who allowed a hidden fox to disembowel him to avoid public shame.1716

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 28, 2026 is: ingratiate • in-GRAY-shee-ayt • verb To ingratiate yourself with others is to gain their favor or approval by deliberately doing or saying things they will like. Ingratiate is usually used with with, and is often (though not always) used disapprovingly. // Scam artists often have an uncanny ability to ingratiate themselves with their victims using subtle flattery that only seems obvious in retrospect. // Although she was nervous to be the new girl in school, Emma quickly ingratiated herself with her classmates through her effortless charm and kind demeanor. See the entry > Examples: “In ever greater numbers, Elizabeth's subjects flocked north to ingratiate themselves with the Queen's likely successor.” — Tracy Borman, The Stolen Crown: Treachery, Deceit, and the Death of the Tudor Dynasty, 2025 Did you know? When you ingratiate yourself, you put yourself in someone's good graces in order to gain their approval or favor. While the word ingratiate does not necessarily imply that your behavior is obsequious or otherwise improper, the word may be used disapprovingly by those who distrust your motives. The word entered English in the early 1600s from the combining of the Latin noun gratia, meaning “grace” or “favor,” with the English prefix in-. Gratia comes from the adjective gratus, meaning “pleasing, grateful.” Gratus has, over the centuries, ingratiated itself well with the English language as the ancestor of a whole host of words including gratuitous, congratulate, and grace.
