In this episode, I present a conversation that I had with Jacob Winograd, host of the Biblical Anarchy podcast, about Biblical Inerrancy. This took place on his previous show, the Daniel 3 podcast. As I clarified my positions on Protestantism, the creeds, and inerrancy in the previous episode (146, available everywhere), I thought that this conversation would help highlight my position on Biblical inerrancy and further clarify my previous statements on the subject. Jacob and I both believe in the authority of scripture, and we discuss why he prefers to retain the language of ‘inerrancy' while I prefer the terms ‘authority' and ‘reliability'. Our perspectives on Biblical interpretation are remarkably similar, and I hope that this helps demonstrate how a conversation between two Christians that have similar views can lead to a fruitful and productive dialogue which sheds light on important theological issues. In this episode I revisit three of my most controversial episodes (5, 19, and 57) that discussed the creeds of the Christian church and Biblical inerrancy. Most of the negative feedback from my show has been generated by these two episodes, and I wanted to revisit them one more time to clear up any potential misunderstandings. First, I explain how the common denominator among all protestants is the belief in the authority of scripture and why that should shape our understanding of the creeds and Biblical inerrancy. I then explain how I agree with every statement of the Apostle's Creed and discuss the importance of creeds in general while showing that the creeds are incomplete because, understandably, there are many important aspects of the Biblical witness that can't be fit into a short summary statement of important beliefs. I discuss how creedalism can sometimes screen out the teachings of Jesus, Christian ethics, and discipleship generally because they address mostly doctrinal statements, and that we need to understand the creeds within the larger framework of scripture so we don't neglect other essential aspects of our faith. I then turn once again to Biblical inerrancy, showing how it has been misappropriated by fundamentalists, progressives, and skeptics and used in ways that undermine the authority of scripture and cause interpreters to unjustifiably impose modern ideas about science and history back into the text. I also explain how defenders of the Chicago Statement, such as R.C. Sproul, have a hermeneutical method that is nearly identical to my own, and why retaining the language of ‘inerrancy' can work if it is carefully defined. I then explain why I prefer the terms ‘authority' and ‘reliability' over ‘inerrancy' while acknowledging that many people I know who hold to ‘inerrancy' are in complete agreement with me on the way in which the Bible ought to be interpreted. I hope this episode helps clarify my position on these important issues! While some churches are averse to creedal statements, and still others copy/paste ancient creeds... what's the right balance? Is all we need the Apostle's Creed, or must we swear by only Christ alone? Let's talk about that.
The early church fought to defend the core doctrines of Christianity, and one of the ways they did this was through the creeds! These statements of faith have been handed down over centuries. Learn how these creeds impact us and what we can learn from the early church.
Growing up Catholic, I memorized the Christian Creed, AKA the Apostles or Nicene Creed. It was part of the Catechism. Later, at the Protestant Church, the Nicene Creed was recited as a statement of faith. This Creed was composed by men in 325 AD because Emperor Constantine wanted to have a specific doctrine stating what every Christian would believe in. That just brings up the fact that you can't become a Christian by edict or doctrine, but by a personal belief in Jesus Christ. Given that, where did they get the doctrine from? In reality, the earliest Christian Creeds predate Constantine's by almost 300 years! These early Christian Creeds are found in your Bible, in the New Testament. Let's dig in… Keep reading in my blog where there are links to dig deeper with other Bible studies, books, and videos… https://seekthegospeltruth.com/2022/09/03/the-truth-in-the-earliest-new-testament-christian-creeds-inspired-by-god/ If you want to reap all the benefits of salvation including the 1-way, non-stop ticket to Heaven then… Believe. Repent. Be Baptized. Receive the Holy Spirit. Pray this prayer humbly and wholeheartedly… “Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Please forgive me. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and my life to you. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. I surrender my whole life to you and I will follow you for the rest of my life. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me. Matt and Ken introduce the importance of historical Christian Creeds.
Matt and Ken introduce the importance of historical Christian Creeds.
In Jesus' name. This is Pastor Michael Lilienthal of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. Together, let us meditate on and wrestle with God's Word: Deuteronomy 6:4: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” From the ages, God's people have known he is exactly one God. In the ancient Christian Creeds, however, we confess faith in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As one of those creeds says, though, “And yet there are not three gods, but one God.” We agree with the ancient Christians. We're not going to try to come up with some new faith, but hold to the same faith which the church has held from the beginning and for which it will fight to the end. But it's not something I can explain, and I'm not going to try. Instead, it's something that has to be believed. To believe that God is the Father, uncreated and unbegotten, and the Son, uncreated and begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit, uncreated and unbegotten but proceeding from Father and Son, but all is also only one God, is an object of our faith. God has revealed this truth about himself, and we trust him. Not only do we believe in God's Triune existence, but we believe all things that he has said about himself: that he is the Maker of all things, that he is eternal, spirit, omnipotent, wise, and good. We do see that he is good. Our limited natures, our sins themselves, cannot shake him in his unassailable goodness. And in Jesus, the Son of God made flesh, he brings that goodness, forgiveness and eternal life, to us. Amen. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/oursaviorsels/support

Historian of Religion, Stephen Patterson, reconstructs one of the earliest Christian Creeds that Emphasized Radical Egalitarianism. One of the earliest creeds of the Jesus Movement may be embedded in one of the letters of Paul. It is an unusual creed in that it says nothing about the nature of God or salvation, but rather what it means to be human. Historian of religion, Stephen J. Patterson, returns to Progressive Spirit to talk about this creed and his book, The Forgotten Creed: Christianity’s Original Struggle Against Bigotry, Slavery, and Sexism. It was utilized and altered by Paul in Galatians 3:26-28, but Stephen Patterson reconstructs the original creed to be the following: For you are all children of God in the Spirit. There is no Jew or Greek, there is no slave or free, there is no male and female,For you are all one in the Spirit. Dr. Patterson argues that this ancient creed is timely for today as it challenges ethnic, class, and gender divisions. Stephen J. Patterson is the George H. Atkinson Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies at Willamette University. A historian of religion, Patterson specializes in the origins of Christianity, especially the hidden histories founding books that were not included in the Bible. He has authored and co-authored nine books and more than a hundred essays, articles, and reviews, including most recently, The Gospel of Thomas and Christian Origins (2013) and The Lost Way: How Two Forgotten Gospels are Rewriting the Story of Christian Origins (2014).
In this episode of Standing Firm, Pastor James Brown Jr discusses some erroneous doctrinal motto’s like “no creed but the Bible,” “Christianity is a relationship and not a religion,” and the idea that we need to focus on original intent to the avoidance of Scripture. Whether it is Andy Stanley’s unhitching of the Old Testament, Lauren Daigle’s “Losing My Religion,” or cultural activists focusing on a phony idea of original intent, this episode confronts the modern heretical slide into apostasy.

What were the major heresies which the Christian Creeds were meant to defend the faith against? How are they relevant today?
Deeds Not Creeds? 3 Reasons Why Christian Creeds Matter.
Ever since the period known as the Enlightenment, many groups that self-identify as Christian have abandoned the notion of doctrine, creeds, or specific beliefs altogether. In their place, they have elevated "deeds" and certain acts of piety. But can behavior really be separated from belief that easily? For the early church, creeds were central to worship, unity, public profession, and it shaped their life as a community. Evidence of early creeds are even present throughout the Bible itself.
