Mallary is the author of Slip: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery, and her work reframes recovery not as a clean, finished destination, but as a messy, ongoing “middle place” where progress and setbacks coexist. In this episode, we talk about how grief, control, and perfectionism shaped her eating disorder after losing her mother at a young age, what treatment actually looks like behind the scenes, the concept of normative discontent (the cultural reality that most of us struggle with our bodies), how slips can become opportunities for growth instead of shame spirals, and how she talks to her kids about food, bodies, and emotions in a way that breaks generational cycles. Plus, we dive into the complexities of pregnancy and postpartum recovery with an eating disorder history. In this episode, Pauline sits down with Tarpley Hitt, author of Barbie Land: The Unauthorized History, to unpack the cultural staying power of America's most famous doll. What begins as a conversation about Barbie's origins leads into a broader discussion about aesthetics, archetypes, and why certain icons endure long after their commercial peak. Together, Pauline and Tarpley explore how Barbie became more than a toy: it's a symbol of commodified femininity, and the enduring power (and contradiction) of myth-making in a consumer-driven world.Tarpley shares the surprising backstory behind Barbie's creation, including the doll's roots in a German predecessor and the outsized role of Mattel's ambitious and controversial leadership. The conversation traces Barbie's evolution from a highly stylized adult doll into a sprawling lifestyle brand, revealing how much of her success came not from the doll itself, but from the endless world of accessories, identities, and aspirations built around her. The episode also examines how Barbie reflects broader social currents - from feminism and body image to consumer culture and global manufacturing - and they consider why and how she has survived cultural backlash, shifting norms, and changing retail landscapes in a way few other brands have.By the end, the discussion becomes a larger meditation on dolls, projection, aspiration, and identity - why humans have always made miniature versions of themselves, and what those figures reveal about the societies that create them.

Cohesive Sediment Properties and Processes with David Perkey, Jarrell Smith and Danielle Tarpley

RSM River Mechanics Podcast

So far on this podcast we've generally used the noun "sediment" to describe sand, gravel, and maybe cobbles and boulders. But the same word also gets used for silts, clays, and muds - materials that behave so differently that lumping them together as "sediment" can blur important distinctions.  This podcast was overdue for a conversation about fine sediment, and I knew exactly who I wanted to talk to.In the notebook where I track episode ideas, I labeled this one the “ERDC Cohesive Brain Trust.” I wanted to sit down with the team for the Corps of Engineers that I call when I have questions about "very small sediment", and the team I point engineers toward when they need cohesive measurements or insight for a project or model. That team is Dr. Dave Perkey, Dr. Jarrell Smith, and Dr. Danielle Tarpley, all based at the USACE Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) at the Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg. A lot of the Corps' sediment expertise lives there. We've had several guests from ERDC over the years, and I've spent a lot of my own career collaborating with sediment specialists there. But Dave, Jarrell, and Danielle work on a part of the sediment world that is very different from the sand-and-gravel problems that dominate a lot of my work.Their focus is sediment that is finer - often much finer - than about 60 to 70 microns, roughly the diameter of a human hair. In the first half of this conversation, they lay out the basic properties and processes of cohesive sediment. Then we move into the research they've done to push that science forward. So whether mud is new territory for you or already part of your world, I think there's a lot here that you will find useful.Dave Perkey has spent nearly two decades at ERDC studying cohesive sediment properties and processes, especially erosion, transport, and geochemical composition. He also manages the Regional Sediment Management program - the RSM behind the title of this podcast - and it is not much of a stretch to say this season would not exist without him.Jarrell Smith has been a research engineer at ERDC since 1994, working on sediment transport, hydrodynamics, cohesive and mixed beds, and sediment-vegetation-turbulence interactions. We also talk about one of the tools he's especially known for, the Particle Imaging Camera System, or PICS, which I recently recommended on one of our own reservoir projects.Danielle Tarpley is a research oceanographer whose work spans sediment transport and hydrodynamics in inland and coastal settings. She works across field data collection, analysis, and modeling, and brings a great project-grounded perspective to the conversation.Dave, Jarrell, and Danielle took different paths through the Carolinas for their master's work, but all earned PhDs through VIMS at William & Mary. And watch the HEC sediment YouTube channel for some videos illustrating the fine-sediment measurement techniques they describe. This series was funded by the Regional Sediment Management (RSM) program.Mike Loretto edited the first three seasons and created the theme music.Tessa Hall is editing most of Season 4.Stanford Gibson (HEC Sediment Specialist) hosts.Video shorts and other bonus content are available at the podcast website:https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/confluence/rasdocs/rastraining/latest/the-rsm-river-mechanics-podcast...but most of the supplementary videos are available on the HEC Sediment YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/stanfordgibsonIf you have guest recommendations or feedback you can reach out to me on LinkedIn or ResearchGate or fill out this recommendation and feedback form: https://forms.gle/wWJLVSEYe7S8Cd248

“Slips” in Eating Disorder Recovery in 2026: Why Setbacks Are Part of Progress, Not Failure (With Mallary Tenore Tarpley, MFA)

What if eating disorder recovery was not defined by a clean, linear arc, but by honesty, self-compassion, and forward movement even when setbacks happen? In this January 2026 conversation, Dr. Marianne Miller welcomes back journalist, author, and professor Mallary Tenore Tarpley, MFA, to reflect on how readers have responded to her book SLIP: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery, and how the language of “slips” is quietly reshaping how people understand recovery. Mallary shares what has surprised her most since the book's release, including the volume of messages from readers who finally feel seen in what she calls the “middle place,” the gray space between acute illness and full recovery. Many readers describe relief in having language for a recovery that is still in progress, one that allows for growth without demanding perfection. Throughout the conversation, Mallary and Dr. Marianne explore why slips are not evidence of failure, but often signs that someone is actively engaging in recovery. They unpack how shame around setbacks can cause slips to turn into longer slides, and how naming them openly can interrupt that cycle. This reframing is especially important in 2026, as diet culture and resolution-driven thinking continue to dominate January narratives around control, discipline, and self-improvement. Mallary also discusses how the “middle place” framework has resonated far beyond eating disorder communities. Readers have applied it to grief, addiction, chronic illness, and other long-term healing processes where vulnerability remains even as life becomes fuller. She reflects on the power of shared language in helping loved ones understand ongoing recovery, including parents and partners who may struggle to grasp why symptoms can persist for years. The episode also touches on under-discussed risks during life transitions, including pregnancy and postpartum experiences, where socially reinforced behaviors can quietly reawaken eating disorder patterns. Mallary explains why speaking openly about these realities helps both individuals and clinicians respond with more nuance and care. As the conversation turns toward the new year, Mallary offers a gentler way forward. Instead of setting rigid, all-or-nothing goals, she encourages curiosity, small steps, and values-based intentions that support recovery over time. Slips, she reminds us, can coexist with progress, and often do. This episode is for anyone who feels caught between wanting change and fearing it, for those exhausted by perfectionism, and for anyone who needs permission to keep moving forward without pretending to be “all better.” Follow Mallary on Instagram: @mallarytenoretarpley Learn more about her book: SLIP: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery Check out another episode with Mallary on Apple or Spotify.

What if "full recovery" from an eating disorder is an unrealistic ideal? In this powerful episode of Every Soul Has a Story, host Dara Levan has an unfiltered conversation with Mallary Tenore Tarpley, author of the reported memoir "Slip." Mallory bravely shares her journey from the traumatic loss of her mother at age 11 to a decades-long struggle with anorexia, binge-restrict cycles, and the often-overlooked "middle place" of recovery. Discover three key takeaways: why we need to redefine recovery as "better, not all better," how grief and perfectionism can manifest as disordered eating, and the surprising warning signs of eating disorders in both women and men. This episode is a must-listen for anyone touched by eating disorders, body image issues, grief, or the quest for self-acceptance.TIMESTAMPS:0:00 - Intro0:25 - Welcoming Mallary Tenore Tarpley2:02 - Disordered Eating vs. Eating Disorder3:09 - Mallory's Mother's Cancer Battle4:12 - Writing Her Mother's Eulogy4:33 - The Harmful Health Class7:18 - The Pressure of Perfect Recovery8:22 - Defining the "Middle Place"11:31 - Involving Her Father in the Memoir16:00 - Realistic Expectations for Recovery25:12 - Postpartum OCD and Pumping27:04 - Eating Disorders in Men32:51 - How to Approach a Loved One39:11 - Parenting and Body Image44:26 - OutroRESOURCES:Mallary's Book: Slip by Mallary Tenore Tarpley (Available wherever books are sold)Mallary's Newsletter: Mallary's SubstackMallary's Instagram: @mallarytenoretarpleyHost Dara Levan's Website: daralevan.comHost Dara Levan's Instagram: @daralevan

When we talk about eating disorder recovery, we tend to imagine two extremes: acutely ill or completely healed. You're either in crisis or you're “all better.”But what about the space in between? The messy, unglamorous, everyday middle place. That's where journalist and author Mallary Tenore Tarpley found herself — and it's what her new book is about. She writes about living in that liminal space: no longer in “danger” the way she once was, but not walking around with a tidy “fully recovered” bow tied on top either. We talk about:- Why the “middle place” matters, and why so many people feel shame about being there.- How grief and trauma can play into disordered eating.- The role of perfectionism and control in shaping recovery.- Navigating the challenges of motherhood while protecting her kids from body shame and diet culture.- Why self-compassion and vulnerability are essential on this journey (and what the hell that actually means). This episode challenges the binary of sick vs. recovered and makes space for a more honest, human version of recovery — one that allows for complexity, setbacks, and resilience."Ask Abbie" at abbieattwoodwellness.substack.com/subscribe Apply for Abbie's Group Membership:Already been at this anti-diet culture thing for a while, but want community and continued learning? "For many of us, myself included, it's easy to want to be on the New York Times bestseller list, or the USA Today bestseller list, and to try to get an amazing number of week-one sales, but it's important to remember that those lists are really hard to get on, and there can be this nice long tail in terms of the impact of a book where maybe it doesn't necessarily get a ton of sales in that first week or that first month. But over time, it continues to sell, right? And then you get these bumps, and you realize that, oh, this book has staying power," says Mallary Tenore Tarpley.Mallary is here today for a double-feature Friday. She's the author of Slip: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery (Simon & Schuster/Simon Element). It's pretty heavy shit, man. What if recovery isn't about a finish line but about finding meaning in the messy middle? In this episode of Dr. Marianne-Land: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, Dr. Marianne Miller welcomes journalist, professor, and author Mallary Tenore Tarpley to talk about her groundbreaking new book, Slip: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery. Mallary shares her powerful story of developing anorexia at age 12 after her mother's death, navigating years of treatment, and later facing a decade-long cycle of bingeing and restricting. She describes how she reframed her experience through the concept of “The Middle Place,” which is a space between acute illness and full recovery where slips are not failures but opportunities for growth. Through her lens as a journalist and storyteller, Mallary highlights the importance of expanding the language of recovery. Instead of labeling experiences as “quasi-recovery” or “pseudo-recovery,” she offers a more compassionate and nuanced perspective...one that validates ongoing struggles while still holding space for progress and hope.

Most people have experienced what Mallary Tenore Tarpley calls “the middle place,” even if they never had a name for it. In this episode, Sharlee Dixon talks with Mallary, author of “SLIP: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery”. In her deeply personal and powerfully researched debut, Mallary blends her own story of anorexia and grief, beginning with the loss of her mother, with interviews from experts and survivors. Together, these narratives reveal the often-overlooked realities of recovery. Her concept of the middle place reframes recovery as a living, evolving journey rather than a fixed destination. In addition to her work as an author, Mallary is a journalism and writing professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other major publications. We often experience or hear about eating disorders. We talk about them--often behind closed doors--as if they're something to be ashamed of and ignored. Yet eating disorders--like all mental issues--are complex, highly challenging, and often resistant to change. They deserve our attention. And for anyone who's been mired in an eating disorder or has had a friend or family member struggle with this issue you know how devastating they can be. And in every case I've seen, the road to recovery is not a straight trajectory--it's a wobbly path filled with hurdles, small steps forward, and plenty of slips along the way. Yet, with perseverance and support, people may ultimately recover from--or at least get a good handle on--this serious issue that significantly impacts both mental and physical health. Dr. Carla Manly is joined by author, journalist, and assistant professor Mallary Tenore Tarpley, who offers a groundbreaking paradigm to help those living with--and recovering from--eating disorders. Send us a textThis episode invites my special guest, Mallary Tenore Tarpley, who is a Journalism Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and Author of the memoir Slip: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery.Mallary became anorexic after the death of her mother when she was twelve shortly after her mother passed away from breast cancer.  She didn't know how to deal with her mother's passing.  She showed a strong front facade, however inside she felt her whole life was crumbling the longer she went on the further away she felt from her mom.  Somehow she felt that if she stayed the same size as when her mother left her she would be closer to her mother and small and safe. This is a very interesting view of exactly what Mallary speaks to - Life in the middle of Eating Disorder Recovery.  I love how she speaks about changing a slip from a slide and building where there is a place where slips will follow, however recovery is possible but does not have to be perfect. It is through treatment and her writing that Mallary found the origin of her eating disorder, what it served, and what to "recognize everything it could take away".Mallary said it is really important to talk about recovery, even if not fully recovered.  She writes about what the middle place is like.  She explains that it is not a place of stagnancy, it is about recognizing the slips, and to move towards that recovery with being honest.  She speaks about immediacy, rather than delaying to remain as a slip instead of going into a slide. Mallory does have her husband and other people who she can rely on.  This is so important. We also spoke to even after recovery, are there still signs that remain?  Do we still restrict even after recovery?  A lingering imprint, is what Mallary said, and I personally do not pay attention to it in general, however, I will say at odd times I do.The book is out today on Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.  You can also reach Mallary at www.mallarytenoretarpley.com or on Amazon.comThank you, Mallary, for your insight.Support the show

Please welcome to our show, #MallaryTenoreTarpley, mom, journalism professor at UT Austin, and author of SLIP, Life in the Middle of Eating-Disorder Recovery. Mallary wrote this book to help others struggling with what she calls "the middle," a gray space between sickness and recovery. Her story is a raw one. Having lost her mother at age eleven, she went deep with an eating disorder, being treated for anorexia and spending years in and out of treatment at Boston Children's Hospital and other centers. She said in her book that she felt recovery was not within reach for her, but she works at it every day. There's hope. There's a way to heal, even if you relapse and find yourself in the middle. That's okay. Mallary says she discovered through therapy that she mentally wanted her body to stay at the age she was when she lost her mother. Her father tried everything, fearing he would lose his daughter and eventually had her treated in hospital. But it didn't end there. She talks about the disorder, triggers, treatment, relapse, and brings it to present day, being married with two children. Please join me in welcoming Mallary on all video and audio podcast platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE, and invite your friends and family to this important conversation. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here.

Together, Nadine and Mallary unpack their personal struggles with body dysmorphia, disordered eating, drunkorexia, and the pressure to appear “recovered.”

It's almost Christmas, and that means it's time to read Christmas books. Today I've got three delightful authors on Book Talk to talk about their novella collection A Louisiana Christmas to Remember. In these three, interconnected Christmas novellas, you experience three wonderful stories of love and hope. In A Louisiana Snow by Morgan Tarpley Smith, meet Mattie: A passionate visionary who learns to forgive and finds love in unexpected places… In Restoring Christmas by Betsy St. Amant, meet Jolene: An artist and prodigal daughter who discovers love exists in the very place she once called home… In A Christmas Reunion by Lenora Worth, meet Adale: A beautiful widow who finally dares to love again… What I love about this Book Talk is we have three authors at different stages of their careers. Lenora Worth has written over 100 novels, Betsy St. Amant has written over 25, and this is Morgan Tarpley Smith's debut. They are at such different places but all love writing and story. Each of them showed signs of being a storyteller at a young age and fell in love with words as children. And that love of words and story carries them forward in writing today. They all have great advice for writers today as well. I really think you'll love meeting these three and learning more about A Louisiana Christmas to Remember.
