Chatting with Morgan Tarpley Smith is always a lot of fun, but chatting with her about Christmas books took it to a whole new level. I'd just gotten home from Scotland when we chatted and she was on her way there! So we had all kinds of things to talk about, but most important... Christmas in Louisiana! Snow in Louisiana! Listen in to why I am most eager to read about feisty grannies! Note: this episode was supposed to be today's "official" episode but I accidentally scheduled the wrong one, so we're doing two today and taking Tuesday off. Sorry! Also, don't forget Morgan's M.L. Tarpley name with the Maylie series. I think we talked about those (and split-time fiction) HERE. Why Would Anyone Want to Read Christmas Today? This!!! I'd forgotten how much fun I had chatting about Louisiana, about these characters, and frankly, yes. About Granny! I mean, come on. I don't know who is with me, but guys. Buy the book, hound the publisher, storm the literary citadel and demand Granny's story. PLEASE (I am begging you!) Morgan chats about how the book idea came about (This is why you spend time at Avid Readers of Christian Fiction, folks!) and about the process the ladies went through in creating this town and these characters. I love that this is an interconnected series of novellas in one book. #BecauseYES! Don't forget about her A Split in Time Facebook Group, too! You'll want to be in there when she announces a split-time book about Granny, right? A Louisiana Christmas to Remember by Becky St. Amant, Lenora Worth, and Morgan Tarpley Smith A Rare Snowfall Leads to a Christmas to Remember Three heartwarming, interconnected stories of faith, love, and restoration, brought to you by three Louisiana-native authors. Will a rare snowy Louisiana Christmas bring restoration and hope to the hometown and hearts of three women from the town's founding family? In A Louisiana Snow by Morgan Tarpley Smith, meet Mattie: A passionate visionary who learns to forgive and finds love in unexpected places… In Restoring Christmas by Betsy St. Amant, meet Jolene: An artist and prodigal daughter who discovers love exists in the very place she once called home… In A Christmas Reunion by Lenora Worth, meet Adale: A beautiful widow who finally dares to love again… And don't forget Granny, whose feisty spirit, blunt dialogue, and quirky ways play an important and endearing role. Barbie has smashed through the glass ceiling. Greta Gerwig's new movie based on the popular Mattel doll is the big summer film of 2023. It's made more than $1 billion –the first time that box office benchmark has been reached by a film directed by a woman. This popular success is all the more notable because the movie deals explicitly with feminist critiques of patriarchy. Barbie has generated an enormous public debate, but not everybody wholeheartedly loves the movie. I think the best piece of writing on the film was written by Tarpley Hitt for The Nation. Hitt, a writer and editor for The Drift who is working on a book about the Barbie doll, described the movie's feminism as “muddled.” I sat down and talked to Tarpley for an enlightening discussion about this year's buzziest blockbuster.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode of Conversations from Here I am honored and privileged to speak with John L. Tarpley, MD. He is Professor of Surgery, Emeritus at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the former Program Director for General Surgery Residents there. He has also been the Associate Chief of General Surgery at the VA Hospital and is currently the Academic Dean of the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons. He is a passionate advocate for patients and doctors alike. He has spent a huge portion of his professional life in Africa-- specifically Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Botswana, training young surgeons and ministering to those most in need. "Tarp"-- as anyone in the hallowed halls of Vanderbilt will attest-- is a legendary character who is as humble as he is funny and as knowledgeable as he is wise. We talk about his life and work, discuss some of the challenges with getting medical care in places far from urban centers, his personal love story and an early obsession with college sports. It's a fascinating talk, indeed. Enjoy! On the 138th episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith interviews Ry Tarpley. Steve feels strongly that Ry's story is inspirational and should be heard by older players who need to make technical changes in their games. Ry had already weathered through the competitive trenches of junior, college, and pro tennis before he completed an assessment with Steve. Upon reviewing the inefficient aspects of Ry's technical foundation, Steve asked Ry if he would like to be ranked number one in the US in the 35s.Ry was in his late twenties and, at the time, was discouraged to finally hear the rationale that brought clarity to his on-court troubles. Ry has a great passion for tennis and continues to work on his game. He was too busy with his new profession to play national 35's but he did earn the #1 ranking in the national 40s; proving it is never too late to go back to the drawing board and work on basics.

Our guest on today's episode is Lauren Tarpley. At the time of this recording, Lauren was about a third of the way through her chemotherapy treatment. For the breasties out there, Lauren is BRCA-, HER2+ and hormone receport negative. She's a wife with a toddler and because of her cancer diagnosis, she also has “three little boys in the freezer” - her description not mine. Lauren and I talk about her diagnosis path and what it means (for both of us) to be in a statistically unlikely situation. You'll hear us talk a lot about AYA cancers - an acronym for adolescent and young adult, which is a cancer experience Lauren elevates on her platform. We also talk about decision-making for her family planning - specifically navigating this as a young adult. Just a heads up - we have a mic switch just a few minutes in. We are trying to make this podcast during a pandemic, so thanks so much for understanding! Here's my conversation with Lauren. Kawhi Leonard, point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, is my Baller of the Week! He is one of my favorite players to watch because he is an excellent facilitator and leader, relentless on defense, and plays with his heart. Game 6 against the Dallas Mavericks really gave me more insight into who he is as a player. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ballinwithkeisha/support
