In this week's episode we go back in time. First we go back to a time when the first Celtic peoples arrived in Ireland - we then go back even further to look at the period when the Celts appeared on the continent of Europe for the first time. Much of this "history" is relayed to us through old Irish annals and texts - all written in the ancient Irish language. As a result, the language of Irish provides us with a window into a Celtic past that does not exist in any other literature in Europe. The music, very appropriately, all feature songs and tunes with Irish titles. We do hope you enjoy.Music featured in this episode:"Caoineadh Cú Chulainn" performed by Davy Spillane."Deora Ar Mo Chroí" performed by Enya."Ebudae" performed by Enya.Support the Letter from Ireland Show:Thank you for listening to the Letter from Ireland show. It's fitting that we celebrate St. Patrick's Day in March, when we can either be enduring the final insults of winter, or enjoying the gentle rains, green leaves and pink blossoms of spring. Whatever the weather, Celtic music can rise to the occasion. Of all the world's folk musics, the Celtic tradition is one of the most extensive in range and varied in emotional expression. From heroic marches to joyous dances, from melancholy dirges to heart-rending ballads — Celtic music reflects the panorama of human feeling. The Celtic revival of the 1980s and 90s brought new attention to the genre, and motivated native Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Breton musicians to new heights, while many other nationalities of Celtic descent were inspired to extend the boundaries of the genre, leading to a kind of golden era for Celtic music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, it's another excursion in the Celtic soundscape, on a program called THE ENCHANTED HARP. Music is by AINE MINOGUE, ADRIAN VON ZIEGLER, JEFF JOHNSON & BRIAN DUNNING, WILLIAM COULTER & MARY McLAUGHLIN, DAVY SPILLANE, SKYEDANCE, AOIFE NI FHEARAIGH, TRINE OPSAHL, SARAH COPUS, and MÉAV, [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

This week, dear listeners, we come once again to our yearly celebration of all things Celtic. Though the time has passed when Celtic music was trending, it's a tradition that continues to evolve. Ireland has boomed and bust, and through it all the beauty and spirit of Celtic music has continued to charm audiences around the world, with its brilliant dances and heartfelt airs and ballads. In the poetic imagination of the Celtic bards and troubadours, travel metaphors are as common as thoughts of home. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we take another journey across those green and rocky lands, on a program called THE CELTIC ROAD. Music is by DAVY SPILLANE, MOYA BRENNAN, LISA LYNN & ARYEH FRANKFURTER, LOREENA McKENNITT, AINE MINOGUE, DAVID ARKENSTONE, BRAGH ADAIR, and JAMES GALWAY & PHIL COULTER. Composer Guy Jackson is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. The Sea of Solitude composer shares details about challenges he faced translating the heavy emotional themes from the video game as well as discusses the exciting experience of arranging tone poems for each character. Sea of Solitude takes you on a personal journey of a young woman's loneliness.  As the gameplay unfolds, set sail across a beautiful and evolving world, where nothing is quite what it seems. Meet fantastical creatures and monsters, learn their stories, and solve challenges.  Explore a flooded city, either by boat, on foot, or by swimming through the water itself. Dare to look what lies beneath the surface, in a haunting struggle of darkness and light, and discover what it truly means to be human. Based in North London, Guy Jackson specializes in highly crafted layered musical compositions, amalgamating acoustic and electronic sounds while encompassing both classical and ambient genres. His work is perfectly suited to the silver screen, enhancing and supporting the mood and tone of a broad variety of visual content. Guy is the resident composer and sound designer for Berlin-based online game creators, Jo-Mei Games. He scored and produced the sound effects for titles such as Koyotl, Who Let the Pets Out? and Monkey Bay. Another of the titles that benefited from the Guy Jackson treatment, Brave Little Beasties (published 2013), was rated 10/10 for sound by Browsergame-magazin.de  ─ proof, if ever there was any doubt, that a Guy Jackson score will enhance your visual creative. In association with his long-term collaborator, pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole, Guy produced two CDs with the critically acclaimed Transparent Music project, which features musicians such as the legendary Davy Spillane, trumpeter Arve Henriksen, bassist Mo Foster and slide guitarist Michael Messer. Phantom Faerie FuneralsDid you know… it is bad luck to meet a funeral procession head on?But don’t despair, there are things you can do to keep on the right side of good fortune. If you see a funeral procession approaching, turn yourself around, and walk at least three steps in line with the funeral march.Or, if there’s no safe space or time enough to turn around, hold on to a button, or the pin of your collar, until the funeral procession passes by.That’s all good and well, but what if it’s your own funeral you’re observing? This week Kitty takes a look at Phantom Faerie Funerals and asks:How do the Good People know when a Human is soon to die?Do the Good People mimic the sound of building a coffin while a Human lay dying nearby? Why do the Good People do a ‘practice run’ of a funeral which takes place only moments later?and is it a kindness or a cruelty to show a Human their own imminent funeral?*The Good People are a curious lot. They are known to seek a Human to bear witness to one of their own sombre processions, but what are we witnessing really? Is it all a big misunderstanding? As always, Kitty encourages keeping an open mind and reminds you it’s okay to believe in the Good People.Read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter or perhaps one handed down through your family at encounterswiththegoodpeople.com and contact Kitty at www.glassonionstories@gmail.comSee what Kitty’s been getting up to at www.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeople and www.instagram.com/encounterswiththegoodpeople*Credits:Theme Music: ‘Irish Coffee’ by Giorgio Di Campo.Additional Music: ‘Dreaming of the Bones’ sung by Sinead O’Connor from the Davy Spillane album ‘The Sea of Dreams’, 1998.‘Ghost Processional’ by Kevin MacLeod.Welsh tales read by Simon.Irish tale read by Simon.

Episode 23 – Spirit of PlaceKitty has a bee in her bonnet! The time has come to clear the air and take a look at one of the foundations of believing and understanding Faerie Folklore: Spirit of Place.*Traditional Irish and Celtic Folklore doesn’t bark or harangue us.It seeps, quietly, into the corners of our mind and memories. It speaks to each of us without prejudice. In this episode, Kitty ponders the experience of being an Irish, or Celtic, descendant and asks:Is it wrong, or offensive, for someone outside of Ireland to discuss Irish Folklore? Why do millions of Americans, Canadians and Australians feel such a powerful connection to the homeland of their Ancestors. What is Spirit of Place anyway, and what’s it got to do with Ancestral Memory?*As always, Kitty explains why it’s okay to feel passionately about the homeland of your Ancestors and encourages everyone to relax and keep an open mind.Read stories of encounters with the Good People, and share your own story of an encounter or perhaps one handed down through your family at www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.com . Bloody May: Will o’Wisp, Red Cap and Sluagh.Faerie of traditional Celtic Faerie Folklore are old and clever, and sometimes bloodthirsty. It is long known the Good People are more active in the month of May. Until they tell us themselves, we can only speculate why this is so but… we are wise to be wary, for not all Faerie wish to act as Guardian, or Muse, or kindly foretell a death at any time. And in the month of May, there are those who would gladly steal your blood or even your life.We look at 2 tales of encounters with Faerie in the month of May which show us how easily they are tempted by a lovely lady and how swift, and final, is their reckoning when a promise is broken. The line twixt life and death is fine indeed… This episode features 3 particularly dangerous Faerie: the Will o’Wisp, Red Cap and Sluagh. These are three fellas you do not want to bump into at any time, but in the month of May, that bump would surely turn deadly. But fear not, we have some tips on how you might save yourself from their wicked whimsies.Kitty reminds you not to be tempted to go Faerie Spotting in the month of May and as always, explains why it’s okay to believe in Faeries. To read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter, perhaps one handed down through your family, or just an unusual experience visit:www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comglassonionstories@gmail.comwww.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleCredits:Theme Music: ‘Irish Coffee’ by Giorgio Di CampoAdditional Music: ‘Caoineadh Cu Chulainn’ written by Bill Whelan from the album ‘Riverdance’, 1997. 30 years ago, Irish-native, Bob Geldof, and Scottman, Midge Ure, transfixed the world with the dual-venue concert, Live Aid, held on July 13, 1985 to raise funds for relief of the ongoing Ethiopian famine. Billed as the "global jukebox", the event was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, England and John F. Kenney Stadium in Philidelphia. It was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time with an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations. Tonight, Mike and Tim remember Live-Aid featuring music by Luka Bloom, Bob Geldof, The Police, and Elvis Costello as well as music from Mundy, Natalie Mcmaster, Bryan Ferry, Tupelo, Rig the Jig, We Banjo 3, and Horslips with a special tribute to birthday boy, Michael Flatley featuring music from Davy Spillane and Eileen Ivers.
