In this episode of The Best Dam Podcast, Jill sits down with Olaf Stanton, the founder of Characters Unlimited, to discuss his 40-year journey as the creative force behind some of the world's most iconic animatronic figures. From his early days selling life-sized characters out of a van to trademarking the world-famous Zoltar, Olaf shares how his passion for making "dummies" evolved into an international business that turns local storefronts into major attractions.Olaf explores the evolution of his craft, from traditional wood-carved looks to complex talking and moving figures that have become staples in restaurants, museums, and casinos worldwide. With deep roots in Boulder City and a business that survived a devastating fire, this episode highlights the resilience of a family-run enterprise and the whimsical spirit required to bring characters like pirates, cowboys, and fortune tellers to life.DISCUSSIONThe"House That Dummies Built": Olaf reflects on his 1986 start in a duplex garage, where he and his wife Krishun built their first characters and traveled for weeks at a time to sell them across the country. The Zoltar Legacy: The story of how Olaf trademarked the "Zoltar" name in 2006—nearly 20 years after the movie Big made the character famous—securing his place as the official home of the legendary fortune teller.Attraction-Based Marketing: Olaf explains why life-sized, animated characters are a vital investment for small businesses, serving as memory makers and "crowd-pullers" for locations ranging from the Southwest Diner to international gift shops. The Casino Connection: A look into the expansion of the brand into the gaming world, including Zoltar-themed slot machines and scratch-off lottery tickets that bring the character's "whimsical future" to the casino floor.High-Stakes Deliveries: Olaf recounts hilarious and stressful moments on the road, including being pulled over by the Border Patrol under suspicion of hauling illegal aliens and a helicopter chase involving a "hostage situation" that was actually just a bubble-wrapped mannequin.Resilience After the Fire: A discussion on the 2022 shop fire that forced a total remodel and a "cleansing process" for the business, which Olaf credits as a reset that allowed his children to help take the company to the next level.Immortalized in Detail: A fascinating look at the craftsmanship behind the figures, including the fact that every talking character features a mold of Olaf's own upper teeth.LEARN MORECharacters Unlimited: https://www.charactersunlimited.com/ The official home of Zoltar and a premier creator of life-sized animatronic characters for over three decades. The Home of Zoltar: Located in Boulder City, Nevada, the shop features a "swag room" with hats, t-shirts, and even Zoltar-branded wine, where the label peels off to reveal a fortune.Products & Customization: Specialized in custom likenesses (including deceased relatives), talking fortune tellers, love testers, and classic Western and pirate-themed animatronics.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZoltarOfficial/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charactersunlimited/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/charactersunlimited1KEYWORDSOlaf Stanton, Zoltar, Characters Unlimited, Animatronics, The Best Dam Podcast, Boulder City Chamber of Commerce#OlafStanton #Zoltar #CharactersUnlimited #Animatronics #TheBestDamPodcast #BoulderCityChamberofCommerce

Ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!!! This week we head into the Eye Of The Storm as we review and rank Immortalized, the riotous sixth studio album from Disturbed! After an indefinite hiatus in the early 2010s the band roared back onto the scene with this surprise record in 2015, featuring iconic moments like The Vengeful One, the ballad-adjacent The Light, and an unforgettable cover of The Sound Of Silence. Sucker punch hooks and powerful vocals keep the album moving, but did the band play it too safe by sticking to their tried-and-true formula?Connor first recommended Disturbed's Evolution to James half a decade ago. It was a solid record, but scored low on his ranking list. In the Year Of Redemption, Connor's hoping a more lively record can Fire It Up and recalibrate James' opinions. We'll talk about the band's rise to greatness, David Draiman's decision to walk from a six-figure salary, and learn about the secret reunion that led to Immortalized! The Mixtaper is brewing up facts about a wrestling wife, defenestration, and a four-year follicular fakeout. On this week's episode hosts Brittany Spanos and Rob Sheffield break down Jeff Buckley's "Grace" as well as his much-too-short career due to his tragic passing at age 30. The pair are joined by Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne, who penned the 2001 biography about Jeff and his father Tim Buckley titled Dream Brother: The Life and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley. Browne had been an early fan of the younger Buckley, having been one of the singer's first interviews. In the early Aughts, Buckley's heartbreaking cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" became a radio staple and minor hit for the singer. Upon the release of his debut album however, Grace performed poorly and received mixed reviews, with Buckley's emotional intensity being a turn-off to some critics and listeners. When Buckley died it felt like a young singer-songwriter's promising, burgeoning career was cut much too short. At the time of his death, Buckley's place in music was still unclear. No one could have anticipated that three decades on, Buckley would more famous than ever. Thanks to the internet, millennial and now Gen Z fans have emerged as a massive audience for Buckley's music. His sweeping romanticism mixed with the lore surrounding his passing has made him a tragic hero of sorts, on par with Kurt Cobain, Elliott Smith and River Phoenix. Buckley not only showed incredible promise as a songwriter but also as an interpreter of great music, and there was so much more he was working to showcase on his sophomore album, which ended up being released posthumously.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Víctor's music reflects many things…a love for humanity, his own life experiences and the lives of regular people, the poor, the farmers, the laborers and artists that are often overlooked and forgotten. The people who make the country run, the people most exploited and forgotten among us. Víctor immortalized not only the archetype of the farmer, the laborer, the peasant but he also immortalized many individuals. Roberto Ahumada, Miguel Ángel Aguilera, Angelita Huenuman, the people senselessly killed in Puerto Montt in 1968 simply murdered for occupying the land of a rich family in southern Chile or Herminda, the baby killed where a Santiago poblacion named after her was built. These names would sadly be lost to time if it were not for Víctor's songs which encourage us to discover who the real people were behind his lyrics. Immortalized in Tom Wolfe's famous book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, the Merry Pranksters were a pivotal link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and both the Grateful Dead and the hippie generation that emerged later in the 1960s. Mountain Girl was romantically involved, and had children, with both the Pranksters' leader, Ken Kesey (author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), and the Grateful Dead's, Jerry Garcia. She thus was both witness to and participant in many of the central events of the 1960s counterculture, including the famed Acid Tests. MG and I talked about the incredible cast of characters she got to know, the role of LSD and other drugs, and the challenges of raising young children in the midst of it all. On this very special episode of “CREATURES OF THE NIGHT”, The Boulet Brothers are recording from the road, as they travel through the UK on the “Boulet Brother's Dragula” Season 4 World Tour. Come along for the ride and get updates about the Tour,  advice for anyone planning to attend a show, plus tales of memories and nightmares from tours past. For this episode's Creature Feature movie review, the ghouls discuss why the 1953 mystery-horror classic “House of Wax” is still both very hot and very “Boulet Brothers' Dragula”.
