Oh, was the sound crappy last week? Well, we've fixed that. New mic! Holy smokes! You're really going to like this. It's so much better. And now that we're done with Newburyport Literary Festival and Independent Bookstore Day, it's all systems go heading into summer, and we've got lots of books to talk about, including:  -  "The Lion Women of Tehran," by Marjan Kamali, who was the star at Newburyport, and who really captured the audience. - "Endling," by Maria Reva, a meta sort of novel set in Ukraine and grappling with the Russian invasion and how to make sense of it.  - "Heartwood," by Amity Gaige, which Hannah started and stopped and ended up finishing, but isn't convinced is really a "thriller." Also, Amity's understanding of Maine seems ... limited. - "The River Has Roots," by Amal El-Mohtar, which is more of a novella, but is really pretty, and a lovely addition to the faerie canon. And it really gets the musical portion of the plot right.  - "The Doorman," by Chris Pavone, which is a little different, not an international spy thriller, and shares some qualities with "Only Murders in the Building," but isn't, like, funny at all. Some twists and turns, though.  Next time, Sam reads some blockbusters and Hannah gets literary. Maybe.

Lord of the World was written in 1907 and is considered one of the classics of dystopian literature. The author, Fr. Robert Hugh Benson, was a Catholic convert from Anglicanism who wanted to write a book about the Antichrist. Lord of the World is that book. Malrubius (Chris), from The Sun Eater discord, joins the show to discuss Lord of the World, why it was important to Pope Francis, and how it impacted other science fiction literature. *************************************************************************************************************Follow me on Twitter @AaronIrberSubscribe to my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@imightbelieveinfaeries7563Subscribe to my Substack - for updates on the show, essays, and more!Donate to my Patreon - I Might Believe in Faeries https://www.patreon.com/imightbelieveinfaeriesLike my Facebook page - I Might Believe in FaeriesBattle Of The Creek by Alexander Nakarada | https://www.serpentsoundstudios.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comAttribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Logo Art by Linnea Kisby************************************************************************************************************* Get full access to I Might Believe in Faeries at aaronirber.substack.com/subscribe

Back to normal! No guests this week, just a bunch of books to talk about, including some big names. Is Sam's mic kind of wonky early? Yes. Just get by that. It doesn't last long. And you really want to hear about: -  "Great Big Beautiful Life," by Emily Henry, which is just enough different from her previous beach reads to make a great beach read. It's a ridiculous biography contest set in Georgia.  - "The Name of this Band is R.E.M.," by Peter Ames Carlin, which Sam found a little boring, but it's hard to tell if that's just because R.E.M. is a boring band.  - "Raising Hare," by Chloe Dalton, which really is about raising a bunny, but not a bunny, a hare, which is a different mysterious kind of animal. Better than that sounds, though.  - "Everything is Tuberculosis," by John Green, which has a terrible name, but is very readable because John Green can write like crazy. This leads to talk about Reddit forums detailing woo-woo mom forum posting, for reasons, and discussion of the term "vlogger."  - "Whyte Python World Tour," by Travis Kennedy, an absolutely absurd and often funny tale of a hair-metal band secretly working for the CIA to bring down the Wall in the late 1980s. Sam doesn't know what to make of it.  - "Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries," by Heather Fawcett, which is delightful, about an academic cataloging faeries in Norway. It's cozy and quite charming.  Also, no, we didn't get this posted in time for Bookstore Day or the Literary Festival, but just try to look past that. It's already happened and you missed it. But there will be other stuff that's awesome in the future, we promise.

How the heck do I describe this book? In 1969, R. A. Lafferty wrote a novel. In it, he combined the spirituality of St. Theresa of Avila, conspiracy theories, immortal frog-men, psychic brain powers based on the ideas of the French paleontologist priest, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, badgers, modernist painters, and much, much more. Reading a Lafferty story is like listening to an excitable drunk tell you an impossible, rambling shaggy dog story. You don't believe it when you're drunk, but you do when you sober up. This week, we discuss Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. Emily Wilde, professor of dryadology, journeys to a quiet village in the north to complete the research for her book by studying the Hidden Ones, or the fae, of Ljosland. Things start rough between Emily and the townfolk, but the appearance of academic rival, Wendell Bambleby, serves to create chaos while also endearing her to the people of Hrafnsvik. Emily and Wendell form a partnership that serves to further her data collection, while also driving her into greater danger.

Director, writer, and producer Ryan Grulich and producer Joshua Cutchin have unearthed the strange case of Hallie Illingworth. The Lady of the Lake follows investigator Amanda Paulson and her team as they delve into the chilling case of Hallie Illingworth, a local woman who disappeared in 1937 and was found three years later in Lake Crescent under disturbing circumstances. As Paulson's team digs deeper, they uncover unsettling truths about Hallie's tragic fate, revealing a history of violence and long-buried secrets. Prior to meeting these literary giants, Williams published The Place of the Lion and a few other stories.  In this episode, we discuss The Place of the Lion, the characters, and the “angelic/platonic” beings Williams uses. VYS0044 | For Fear of Little Men - Vayse to Face with Jo Hickey-Hall - Show notes They've talked of night-time scaries, they've talked of shadow men, but they daren't talk of fairies, for fear of meeting them... Bravely, valiantly, courageously, boldly confronting a topic that they have avoided delving into for the past two years, Hine and Buckley take a trip into the terrifying world of fairies with their guide, researcher podcaster and author, Jo Hickey-Hall, creator and host of the hugely successful Modern Fairy Sightings Podcast. Jo talks beautifully on the subject and the conversation flits magically around the topic on gossamer wings and a cloud of enchanted dust: what exactly are fairies? Where did the common "Tinkerbell" trope come from? Do fairy sightings herald a transitional period in the life of the observer? Are some humans part fae? Can anyone see fairies? Just how frightened should we be of the fae?... and what do Pukwudgies, puppets, pork-pie hats and the Monster Munch monsters have in common? This was a really great episode! Richard Rohlin, Deacon Nicholas Kotar, and Christopher Ruocchio join the show to discuss magic in fantasy fiction. What is magic? What are magic systems? How has the portrayal of magic changed in the last several decades? How do different authors approach magic in their books? What do liturgy and poetry have to do with magic? Why do we all have a problem with modern depictions of magic? We address all of these questions and more. Hot takes abound! The Ancient Greeks believed they existed before the dawn of time, yet they're a mystery to most, so, for this week's Bonus Episode we're exploring the long and complex history of Nymphs!Part of the "Three Ravens Bestiary" series, we start off discussing the roles Nymphs played in the Greco-Roman pantheon, including how they were classified and eventually used, in Imperial projects, to present local and regional gods of pagan cultures, such as the Celts and Britons, as less powerful than the Olympians. This then sees us look at examples of some ancient genius loci from across England, including those found in shrines at Hadrian's Wall, where some local deities defied the odds and survived well into Christianization, later becoming recognised as Saints. From there we head in two directions - firstly, forward, via Chaucer, Marvell and Shakespeare, into a place where Nymphs and Faeries got a little bit muddled up in the British mindset. After that, we journey back to the start, exploring how writers like Hesiod, Homer, and many others, developed and contributed to the collective idea of 'Nymph Lore' - the roles Nymphs played in city foundation, how they were worshiped, and what 'Nympholepsy' - Nymph Madness - was, and why some people sought it out! Via discussions of the 18th century invention of the idea of 'Nymphomania' - in contrast with other misogynistic (and anti-British) ideas such as Tacitus' characterisation of the Roman Witch Empress Messalina, the vengeful Iceni Queen Boudica, and figures like Britannicus, we wash up in the present day - a time when being called a "nymph" seems to have nothing to do with nature spirits, and much more to do with systems of power and control...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Ovid was a Roman poet who wrote a 15-book catalogue that came to be known as The Metamorphosis. The stories are all based on Greek and Roman mythology and most consist in some sort of grotesque physical transformation as a result of the antics of the pagan gods. Ovid became so popular in Christian culture that there developed an entire mythographic tradition of interpretation. The culmination of this tradition is The Medieval French Ovide moralisé written by an unknown author in Medieval France. For the first time, this gigantic poem has been translated into another language (English) and I am joined by one of the translators, Sarah-Jane (SJ) Murray, to discuss Ovid, the Ovide moralisé, myth and much more. In 2023, SJ Murray started a non-profit film company, The Greats Story Lab, and are currently involved in making a film on the philosopher, Boethius. Rose Auroras is a sorceress and seer, specialising in Faery & Elf-related issues and spiritual needs. She is part of a spiritual lineage of Celtic origin, but also trained in other spiritual traditions including Trolldom and Hoodoo/Conjure. Many people encounter issues or have spiritual needs related to the Good People (faeries) or the Alfar (Elves). Some may experience Faery-related activity, whether positive or negative, without understanding the reasons behind it, yet they wish to know why. Additionally, there are those courageous individuals who seek to establish a working relationship with the Fair Folk or the Alfar but are uncertain about how to do so safely. Addressing any of these Faery-related needs, and more, is Rose's area of expertise. In the Plus show we get into hybridism, how these entities can manifest. Rose tells us about her fascinating experiences with scrying and what she has seen surrounding people who have availed of her services, including Dark Man spirits.
