Meet our friend Deanna Witkowski. Known for her adventurous, engaging music that heals the soul, Witkowski moves with remarkable ease between Brazilian, jazz, classical, and sacred music. Witkowski's performances combine virtuosity and heart, telling stories that reveal her innate curiosity of the human condition. Her first book, Mary Lou Williams: Music For The Soul (Liturgical Press), published in September 2021, is the winner of the 2022 ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award and the 2022 Jazz Journalists Association Award for Biography of the Year. Her seventh recording, Force of Nature (MCG Jazz), released in January 2022, reached number five on the JazzWeek nationwide radio chart and remained in the top 10 most played albums on jazz radio for more than 10 weeks. A frequent winner of composition competitions for her concert and sacred choral pieces, Witkowski has received funding for new work from the New York State Council on the Arts (for her Afro-Brazilian project, the Nossa Senhora Suite) and the Choral Arts Initiative PREMIERE Project Festival. We thank Deanna for permission to include clips of two of her original tunes: “Wide Open Window” from Wide Open Window. © Tilapia Tunes, used by permission. “Force of Nature” from Force of Nature. © Tilapia Tunes, used by permission.Theme music: "All Thumbs" from Faith in a New Key, Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quartet Music used by permission from Presbybop Music (BMI) Announcer: Chris Norton (c) Presbybop MusicSupport the Show.

Jazz is more than a style. It's a tradition, filled with imagination, interpretation, and improvisation. We explore the curious practice of creating music as it proceeds. How does that work? We learn by listening, so we offer a tune from a Presbybop Quartet album.Along the way, Jeff Kellam refers to a luminous biography of Mary Lou Williams by Deanna Witkowski, the equally luminous jazz pianist. We will talk to Deanna in a future episode. In the meantime, we highly recommend Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul. Order it here. A great big heapin' helping of a certain blind pianist's work provides the anchor for this time's outing, as we look at one disc from six of a new box set and then fan out to look at a little known second-hand disciple of the great man along with two other stylists further removed. Pop matters further reveals Mike's ongoing obsession with all things Buckley. Lennie Tristano - PERSONAL RECORDINGS, Disc three; Billy Lester - FROM SCRATCH ; Deanna Witkowski – FORCE OF NATURE; Roberto Occhipinti – THE NEXT STEP .

1) Deanna Witkowski– the musician and author of “Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul” discusses the jazz legend's road to musical success and her conversion to the Catholic faith. 2) Kelly Starling Lyons and Torrey Maldonado, Part 2 – the Christopher Award-winning authors discuss the ways they approach prayer and struggle in their lives.
Deanna Witkowski was first drawn to the pianist Mary Lou Williams in 2000 when she was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center for the Mary Lou Williams Festival. Of course she said yes, but she also realized that she was unfamiliar with Mary Lou's music. That initial listening dive sparked a 20-year exploration of Mary Lou Williams' life and music, now showcased in a book, Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul, and an album, Force of Nature. Force of Nature is the perfect phrase to describe Mary Lou Williams. She was not only an amazing composer and pianist in her own right — musicians like Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie learned harmony and composition from her caring mentorship. The names of her students get thrown around in history classes more often than we hear of Mary Lou. But perhaps she deserves a bit more credit than what's given — especially when we hear startlingly similar harmonies in the compositions of her pupils. The bridge of Monk's "Well You Needn't" is practically interchangeable with the bridge of Mary Lou's tune “Gjon Mili Jam,” written years earlier. Additionally, Mary Lou described herself as an experimentalist, someone who was always doing something new. While critics sometimes decried her exploratory styles, Mary Lou took it as a badge of honor. When critics said, “The problem with Mary Lou is that we can't pin her down into one category,” she just said, “That's the point.” Deanna Witkowski shares more about Mary Lou's life and music in this interview with Bite-Size Jazz. Deanna talks about her connection with Mary Lou as a fellow adult convert to Catholicism, their jazz masses, and digs into Mary Lou's “Zodiac Suite.” Resources: Learn more about Mary Lou Williams in Deanna Witkowski's book, Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul. You can find Deanna's album Force of Nature anywhere you stream music, it's also available for purchase from Deanna's website. Loving the podcast? Mary Lou Williams: one of the outstanding jazz pianists of all time, composer, Catholic convert, visionary, performer of works of mercy. Because Williams's career lasted and her style adapted through many changes in jazz from the swing era to the early 1970s, and because she mentored two of jazz's most influential figures (Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk), this episode is an opportunity not only to dive into her life and music, but to learn a little about jazz history more generally. Deanna Witkowski, herself a jazz pianist and Catholic convert, has written a new biography of Williams, Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul, and performs Williams's compositions on her forthcoming album, Force of Nature. Jazz composer and pianist Deanna Witkowski shows how hymn arrangements can enrich our interactions with familiar texts. And she discusses how we can better welcome guest musicians into our congregations. Deanna Witkowski has a wide range of musical experience, including as a church musician and as a guest artist in churches. Many of her compositions are sacred works, including a song my choir often sings as an introit—"We Walk in Love." In 2017, her hymn "We Belong to God" won the Annual Hymn Search of The Hymn Society in the U.S. and Canada. Among Deanna's many accolades, she has won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition.
