Since the early 2000s, Festival Director and musical curator Cem Zafir has been presenting diverse, exploratory, and engaging concerts via his non-profit organization, Zula Presents. After moving to Hamilton, Ontario in 2012, Cem seized on the opportunity to create an early summer music festival. The Something Else! Festival began in 2014. Now in its 12th year, it brings to Hamilton some of the finest talents in creative, global, and improvised music. In this fun and compact catch up with Jane, Cem previews some of the highlights of the upcoming festival. From solo piano with Guggenheim Fellow and Alpert Award-winning pianist/educator Myra Melford, to the deep electronic vibes of Farida Amadou; from the "weird beauty" of The Cluttertones, to a nature walk with Pulitzer Prize recipient, percussionist and composer Susie Ibarra, the lineup is guaranteed to blow your mind, and open your ears. Today, the Spotlight was meant to shine On drummer, percussionist, and composer Ches Smith, whose album Laugh Ash was released earlier this year on Pyroclastic Records. As we arranged to get together, Ches suggested we include Shara Lunon, the transdisciplinary poet, vocalist, composer, and improviser featured on the album.Laugh Ash is one of the most intriguing records I have encountered in quite some time, with its mix of form and improvisation, acoustic and synthetic, quiet and explosiveness. In addition to Ches and Shara, the album includes an all-star cast from today's creative music scene: flutist Anna Webber, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, trumpeter Nate Wooley, violinist Jennifer Choi, violist Kyle Armbrust, cellist Michael Nicolas, and bassist/keyboardist Shahzad Ismaily. It is an exciting work and we had a great conversation.
Anna Webber has worked hard to establish herself as an elevating force in the rarefied world at the intersection of creative jazz and new music. An accomplished composer whose first mission was to develop her potential as an instrumentalist, she's stopping by our fair city while on the road with her evocatively named Shimmer Wince Quintet.

Nick Dunston is a Brooklyn-based composer, improviser, and instrumentalist. An “indispensable player on the New York avant-garde" (New York Times), his performances have also spanned a variety of venues and festivals across North America and Europe. He's performed, toured, and recorded professionally with bands led by artists such as Vijay Iyer, Marc Ribot, Ches Smith, Imani Uzuri, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Anna Webber, Amirtha Kidambi, Amir ElSaffar, Allison Miller, and Darius Jones. In 2019 he was awarded the Van Lier Fellowship by Roulette Intermedium, which supported the world premieres of The Floor is Lava! (upright bass quintet), and La Operación (double saxophone trio + soprano voice), referred to as “a work so dramatic and large that is both a response to socio-historical truth as well as a reflection on his own identity…” (I Care If You Listen). In 2019 he released his debut album, Atlantic Extraction, which “features the unusual instrumentation of double bass, drums, electric guitar, flute, [and violin]- and his compositions put that configuration to imaginative use.” (The Wire Magazine). As a writer, he's made monthly contributions to Hot House Jazz Magazine from 2016-2019.Albums: Atlantic Extraction, Carrboro ImprovisationsOther media: http://www.nickdunston.org/https://soundcloud.com/nick-e-dunston
