A meditation preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai at Lyncroft Centre in Toronto on March 1, 2025.The ancient hymn that I have heard you sing so beautifully right here is the Anima Christi, the soul of Christ.O bone Jesu, exaudi me. Intra tua vulnera absconde me. Ne permittas me separari a te.O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds conceal me. Do not permit me to be parted from you.The wounds of Christ, a sign of the intensity of His love for us. They would not heal if he had not risen. What do they mean for us today?Music: Original music by Michael Lee of Toronto.Thumbnail: Caravaggio, The Incredulity of Saint Thomas 1601, Sanssouci Picture Gallery, Potsdam.
When people hear the word prayer, they think about the various prayers that we say—the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Anima Christi. That's one sense of the word prayer. We're called to not only say acts of prayer, but to live the life of prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives this definition: the life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice holy God and in communion with him. Fr. James Brent, O.P., begins to unpack what the life of prayer looks like in this episode.Follow us on: Instagram: @contemplatapodcast Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/DominicanFriarsMedia Support: If you want to support this podcast, please visit dominicanfriars.org/contemplata
Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds hide me. Separated from Thee let me never be. From the malignant enemy, defend me. At the hour of death, call me. And close to Thee bid me. That with Thy saints I may be Praising Thee, forever and ever. Amen.

In the Church's great treasury of prayers are two most often used in the context of the Eucharist: the Divine Praises and the Anima Christi. But what are these prayers, and why should we consider making them a part of our own prayer vocabulary? That's what Dr. Chris and Renae talk about in this episode. Enjoy!

Gesprek met Zr Maria de Anima Cristi over Jezus liefhebben. Zij haalt daarvoor o.a.

Join us in praying the Anima Christi. The prayer's exact origins are not clear, but it is well known for appearing at the beginning of Saint Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises. "Anima Christi," meaning "soul of Christ," is the first phrase in the Latin prayer. The Anima Christi: Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O Good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds, hide me. Separated from Thee, let me never be. From the malignant enemy, defend me. At the hour of death, call me. And close to Thee bid me, that with Thy saints I may be praising Thee, forever and ever. Amen.
24 January 2020 | St. Timothy | Menlo Park, Calif. No two extremes perhaps seem more foreign to one another than kingship and martyrdom, the height of worldly power and the depth of ignoble destitution. Yet Christ unites the two on the cross in His own body, becoming in his self-sacrificing victory our great Martyr-King. What does it take to make a man a king? More than a crown. What does it take to make a man a martyr? More than a sword. Today we dive deep into the life of St. Timothy, apostle and spiritual son of the great St. Paul, who gave his life for Christ at Ephesus. We also look at the character of King Henry VI in Shakespeare’s triad of plays of the same name. Both by their lives propose answers to the question: what is it to live for Christ? This well known Catholic prayer dates to the early fourteenth century and was possibly written by Pope John XXII, but its authorship remains uncertain. The prayer takes its name from its Latin incipit, meaning "Soul of Christ". The Anima Christi was popularly believed to have been composed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, as he puts it at the beginning of his Spiritual Exercises and often refers to it. However, it has been found in a number of prayer books printed during Ignatius' youth and is in manuscripts which were written a hundred years before his birth. In the library of Avignon there is preserved a prayer book of Cardinal Peter De Luxembourg, who died in 1387, which contains Anima Christi in practically the same form as we have it today. This prayer was so well known and so popular at the time of Ignatius, that in the first edition of his Spiritual Exercises he merely mentions it, evidently supposing that the reader would know it. In later editions, it was printed in full. It was by assuming that everything in the book was written by St. Ignatius that it came to be looked upon as his composition. Anima Christi, sanctifica me. Corpus Christi, salva me. Sanguis Christi, inebria me. Aqua lateris Christi, lava me. Passio Christi, conforta me. O bone Jesu, exaudi me. Intra tua vulnera absconde me. Ne permittas me separari a te. Ab hoste maligno defende me. In hora mortis meae voca me. Et jube me venire ad te, Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te, In saecula saeculorum. What does the Anima Christi prayer tell us about TOB? Should I be using NFP to avoid pregnancy? How do I talk to my daughter about transgenderism? Ask Christopher West is a weekly podcast in which Theology of the Body Institute Director Christopher West and his beloved wife Wendy share their humor and wisdom, answering questions about marriage, relationships, life, and the Catholic faith, all in light of John Paul II’s beautiful teachings on the Theology of the Body. This week’s questions: Q1: What light does the Anima Christi prayer shed on the TOB? Q2: I am 41 years old and my husband and I have been married for 8 years. We have been trying to get pregnant for the last seven years, we have had two miscarriages. I still feel that I would like to become a mother but I am concerned that I will be too old if it happens. I told my husband that there is part of me that wants not to have children anymore and perhaps use NFP to avoid getting pregnant from now on. He said that this would go against the teaching of the church and will be a sin. I would like your opinion on this. Q3: I need some help with lovingly discussing transgenderism with my 14 year old daughter. This has sadly become quite a popular thing in school and it seems to be viewed as "cool". My daughter has a female friend who says she identifies as a male and has gone so far to have her friends call her by a boy's name. How can I most lovingly admonish this friend's behavior without seeming judgemental or unkind? Whenever I try to steer her away from thinking that this isn't okay she becomes very defensive and says she "just doesn't see anything wrong with it". Ode to Wine from Sirach 31 _Let not wine be the proof of your strength For wine has been the ruin of many As the furnace tests the work of the smith So does wine test the heart. Wine is very life to anyone if taken in moderation. Does anyone really live who lacks the wine that from the beginning, God created for our Joy? Joy of heart, good cheer, and delight Is wine enough drunk at the proper time, But headache, bitterness, and disgrace Is wine drunk amid anger and strife. Wine in excess is a snare for the fool But do not wrangle with your neighbor when wine is served Nor despise him while he’s having a good time.
