This dedication mix is long overdue. In 1996, my friend Dave played me Journey to Satchidanada and I was blown away. A year or two later, I recovered a weathered copy of the record from a book and record store on East 7th Street in Manhattan while digging around with the same friend and it became a prized possession. Over the coming years I educated myself on more of her music, digging up copies here and there, and feel a bit lucky to have grabbed most of her records before the "craze" hit sometime in the late 2000s. It's truly unique and beautiful music - I admit that I can't totally stomach some of the more free-leaning cuts she recorded, in the same way I can't get into the late work of her also-legendary husband, but when I put these albums on the turntable it truly is a bit of an "inter-dimensional" experience, like the cover art of her World Galaxy album. Belated happy birthday to Alice Coltrane! Besides the first track, which is a clip from a seminal session she did with Marian McPartland for NPR's "Piano Jazz" series, these are all from my personal copies of her albums.

The John Coltrane Quartet. 1. We'll Be Together Again 2. Satin Doll 3. Blue Monk 4. My guest for Episode 12 is trumpet player and long-time advocate for women in jazz, Ellen Seeling. A Milwaukee native, Ellen was the first woman to earn a degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University. In 1975 she moved to New York City, where she worked with the likes of The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Machito, the Slide Hampton Big Band, Luther Vandross, Laura Nyro, The Temptations, Isis and Martha Reeves, among countless others. In 1980, Ellen and her now-wife, saxophonist and composer Jean Fineberg, formed the jazz fusion band DEUCE, recording two albums, and touring all over the United States. In 1989 the two relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where they continued to play with DEUCE and several other ensembles, and in 1998 Ellen founded the Montclair Women’s Big Band, in an effort to provide greater visibility for the Bay Area community of women jazz artists. Ellen also spent many years teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Jazzschool in Berkeley, California, and has held teaching positions at a number of other universities and events including Indiana University, Pennsylvania State University and the Kansas City Women’s Jazz Festival. In 2009 Ellen founded and co-directed the United States’ first summer jazz camp for girls, the Girls’ Jazz & Blues Camp, featuring a women’s faculty from the Montclair Women’s Big Band. Then, in 2015, Ellen co-founded Jazzwomen and Girls Advocates, in an effort to address the systemic and historic gender discrimination in jazz. Thus far, the organisation has consulted with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, playing a role in their adoption of new hiring processes, and also helped to encourage the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 500% increase in women instrumentalists programmed for its 2018 edition.Ellen and I caught up via Zoom in early April to discuss her experience coming up as a young female trumpet player in the late 1960s and early ‘70s; being invited to play professionally with the all-women jazz-rock band Isis and the legendary Laura Nyro while she was still in college; her experience living and working in New York for almost 15 years, often playing with otherwise all-male bands and orchestras; her work with Jazzwomen and Girls Advocates, in particular their lobbying of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Monterey Jazz Festival; and some of the music that has inspired her over her career.https://www.montclairwomensbigband.com/ (Ellen’s profile: https://www.montclairwomensbigband.com/about-us/ellen-seeling-bio)https://jazzwomenadvocates.org/Ellen on Marian McPartland’s ‘Piano Jazz’: https://www.npr.org/2013/12/06/249318939/ellen-seeling-on-piano-jazz Jean’s website, which features work by both Ellen and Jean: https://deuceband.com/https://soundcloud.com/montclairwomensbigband And my Q&A with Melbourne International Jazz Festival: https://www.melbournejazz.com/news/womeninjazzpodcast-qna/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/womeninjazz)

“The Lady Plays,” is Robin's tribute to the Piano Queen, Marian McPartland. Robin taped a one-hour segment on Marian's program, NPR's Piano Jazz, twelve years ago, when her first book, Piano Girl, was published. “Marian's joy rubs off on me. Look at her go—here's a ninety-year-old woman playing piano the way she wants to. She has grown into her music and stayed young because of it. She listens, she responds, she encourages the rest of us to keep going. Marian doesn't need magic, luck, or soothing words to keep her plane in the sky, because she's the pilot. If there's a better role model for a musician, I don't know who it is." Sometimes poignant and often hilarious, Robin Meloy Goldsby, host of The Piano Girl Podcast ,reveals the comedies, tragedies, and mundane miracles witnessed from the business side of the Steinway. A pianist in lounges and lobbies around the world, Goldsby tells her stories by connecting people she has met with places she has played. Along the way she discovers the human side, for better or worse, of her audiences—mobsters and moguls, the down-and-out and downright scary, and ordinary people dealing with life in extraordinary ways. Her stories deliver insights into the art and craft of piano playing—and inspiring lessons in life—as she pursues her dreams on her own terms. Robin Meloy Goldsby is the author of Piano Girl; Waltz of the Asparagus People; Rhythm; and Manhattan Road Trip.  She has appeared on National Public Radio's All Things Consideredand NPR's Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland. Robin is a Grammy-nominated lyricist. She is a Steinway Artist and cultural ambassador with artistic ties to both Europe and the USA; her newest solo piano album, Home and Away, launched at Buckingham Palace in November, 2017, at a gala hosted by HRH, the Prince of Wales, in honor of In Kind Direct, an organization that encourages corporate giving for social good. Robin currently performs plays about 150 live piano gigs a year at Excelsior Hotel Ernst in Cologne, Germany, and tours internationally with her popular concert/reading program.  "Goldsby has a wicked sense of humor and a keen eye for the absurd. Bighearted, funny, truly eye-opening memoir." Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Piano Girl Robin Meloy Goldsby's definition of an Accidental Insult: a comment that causes the recipient to say thank you and cringe at the same time. Most of the musicians she knows have developed thick skins underneath their little black dresses and tuxedos. Like it's not hard enough to smile and remember 3,000 tunes while playing for a chiropractor convention—they must also suffer the slings and arrows, the digs and dings, of well-meaning, slightly-idiotic customers.  In Part Two of "The Accidental Insult," Goldsby describes an indirect meeting with Madonna and how the two of them have more in common than one might expect. Blond ambition, indeed.  Robin Meloy Goldsby, host of The Piano Girl Podcast, reveals the comedies, tragedies, and mundane miracles witnessed from the business side of the Steinway. Piano Girl Robin Meloy Goldsby and her partner Joe get an exciting songwriting commission. The subject? World peace and brotherhood. It takes five songwriting sessions, a plate of cold gnocchi, three slices of stale pizza, a few bottles of wine and half a chicken, but eventually they come up with a suitable composition. They show up at a synagogue in Princeton, New Jersey, to present the song to the congregation at a special ceremony. And that's where things take a left turn. Goldsby, host of The Piano Girl Podcast, reveals the comedies, tragedies, and mundane miracles witnessed from the business side of the Steinway. Note: All music heard in this episode is from Noah's album Ripples. At the end of this podcast is the full track (10:21) entitled 'Ripples (for Margie).' Jazz pianist and composer Noah Baerman's tenacity and his cutting edge yet soulful music have made him an inspiring figure to a growing legion of admirers. Ten years after nearly walking away from the piano due to his struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), an incurable connective tissue disorder with which he was born, Noah is playing and composing with more authority than ever. These challenges and his experiences as a foster parent have deepened his already fierce commitment to "message music." Noah earned his B.Mus. and M.M. from Rutgers University in the 1990s under the mentorship of Kenny Barron. Since then he has participated in and composed for numerous recordings, including eight CDs as a bandleader. His 2003 release Patch Kit features jazz legends Ron Carter and Ben Riley and revolves around his struggles with EDS ("Much more than just a commendable exercise in education and humanitarianism, this is a wonderful and inspiring musical journey that's a testament to the power of jazz, humor and positive energy to turn a challenging situation into one of joy and hope." - Joel Roberts, All About Jazz - New York). Patch Kit raised awareness and funds for EDS and led to an invitation from Marian McPartland to be a guest on her long-running NPR program Piano Jazz in 2005. Two compositions premiered on that show then appeared on his album Soul Force, a tribute to the life and message of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Soul Force featured Noah's writing for large ensemble, here featuring trombonist Robin Eubanks, percussionist Warren Smith and saxophonists Steve Wilson, Jimmy Greene, Wayne Escoffery and Claire Daly. In 2008 he was awarded a "New Works" grant from Chamber Music America/Doris Duke Foundation. The resulting Know Thyself, an emotionally sweeping 65 minute suite for septet, was premiered at Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts and at the Jazz Gallery in New York and recorded for a 2010 release. Baerman lives in Connecticut, and has been gaining a strong reputation as an educator. He teaches at several institutions including Wesleyan University, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches graduate courses in music. His teaching concepts have been codified through nine well-regarded instructional books published by the Alfred Publishing Company. His blog, NB Pontificates, covers topics ranging from frank discussions of his experiences as a survivor of disability and child sexual abuse to his popular musical Top 10 lists and his own vegetarian recipes. In 2012 he was named Artistic Director of Resonant Motion, Inc., an organization that seeks to explore and deepen connections between music and social causes, as well as forming the Jazz Samaritan Alliance, a collective of accomplished artists working to compose and perform socially conscious music. Other projects in the works include a multi-media collaboration with photographer Carla Ten Eyck depicting survivors of cancer and other life-shaking challenges, a foster care-themed set of compositions titled "There But for the Grace," and a series of largely improvised collaborations with his wife, visual and performance artist Kate Ten Eyck. "It is an amazing gift to have a bright future in spite of adversity. I hope to create things of sufficient beauty that I can give that gift back many times over." - Noah Baerman The music on this podcast is from Noah's latest album "Ripples."
